Guns of August : World War 1 1914-1918 Review

Guns of August : World War 1 1914-1918

If you're interested in a WWI strategic level PC game, your choice is simple, as there is only one: Guns of August.

Guns of August does not abuse it's monopoly. While it pays heed to the "slogfest" nature of trench warfare, it avoids static game play.Infantry, cavalry, and artillery units of 6-7 nations at a time lurch across a compact, axial map of Europe from the French Atlantic coast to western Russia. The game is either single or two player, as there is no multi-player option. Email play is possible. Each player directs their units in an order phase, and then movement and combat are resolved simultaneously.

The Entente and Central power players are responsible for all the countries in their respective coalitions. This means deciding research, diplomacy, builds, and naval planning for, at times, 5-6 countries. This has been one criticism directed against the game, but in reality, decision making for the smaller countries is relatively brief.

A unique aspect of the game is the use of headquarter units that carry a number of "activations".Activation points are required for offensive actions. They require resources to build, and the limitation on their numbers means you have to choose where you will carry out offensives carefully.Without enough headquarters or activation points, offensives will stall, like Ludendorff's offensive of 1918.

The result is you concentrate artillery, infantry, and cavalry for offensives, much as occurred in reality in WWI. But there will be large areas of the "front lines" that are relatively peaceful.Artillery units can be used without activation points, and they will continue to blast away all over the map, slowly eroding your front line units.

The Central Powers have the heavier burden to carry to victory. The enormous army of Russia is pressing from the east, and once America enters the war, the Western Front gives way faster and faster.

Complaints: Italy and Russia arguably have an "ahistorical", excessive influence on the game.Air and naval power are abstract, and if your hoping to see biplanes fly across the sky, you won't here. The manual doesn't explain game concepts well-you'll have to play 2-3 times to develop an understanding of game play.

A very reasonable, thoughtful presentation of WWI strategy that will appeal predominately to the strategy/history grognard.

WWII Fighters Review

Great game!My favorite is the P-51 Mustang!Realistic aircraft.Excellent graphics.Single mission option allows you to do flight training, i.e., landing, takeoff and navigation. In addition you can fly training missions in strafing, bombing and firing rockets at targets with on-screen instructions. When you get comfortable with these missions (if you're a new-comer) you can progress to actual missions on specific campaigns or build your own personal missions, if you like.I've tried MS Combat Flight Sim, Figher Aces and a couple of others.I've yet to see a WWII Fighter game that tops this one!You can't go wrong with it, especially at this price!

Rise of Flight: The First Great Air War - Iron Cross Review

Rise of Flight: The First Great Air War - Iron Cross

This is not a full review, just my impression of this simulator. I don't have the ICE edition, but the previous one. ICE is actually a repackage of the previous version, with more planes available by default (when planes appear, you buy them - if you want to fly them, otherwise they are in the game, but only for AI). So if you don't have the previous version, this one is the better deal. This model (pay/buy what planes you want) helps with making the new patches free.

It has the best flight models, graphics, plane models and a very detailed mission editor. A lot of work was put into it. You do need a good computer (try an i7 or a Phenom x6, this one is pretty cheap for the performance you get) and you have to be prepared to spend time configuring it - because it is a simulator, not a game. Nevertheless, it has a lot of options to help the new user (including guided shooting). It does run on 64 bit all right, unlike what a previous poster implied (i have it running on a win7 x64 with phenom II x6 at 3500GHz). While not 'theoretically' required, you really need at least a good joystick (pitch, roll) with twist option to also control the rudder, or in addition - pedals (much better). Multiplayer offers 'cooperative mode' missions (everybody starts at the same time, dead is dead), dogfight mode (everyone enters when he/she can, you can respawn when dead) and also a 'conquer the flag' mode. The mission editor is very powerful, with lot of triggers and 'logic' stuff. The sim also offers a quick mission builder for single player, a (dynamic) campaign mode and a 'career mode' (scripted campaigns). So you can fill the skies with planes, or fly under bridges, or get medals and promotions flying campaigns or multiplayer.

It is very addictive, if you are a serious simmer and/or aviation fan. Some people only play this sim.
