Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack Review

Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been anticipating this for awhile. There's not a lot to it so I'll jump right into the juicy bits - first, it's nice they put the auto-update in the package for those who don't have Live, as the gameplay tweaks have a pretty noticable impact. But it's the maps we're really interested in, right?

CONTAINMENT - This map essentially plays like Coagulation; the big differences are the larger bases and the series of tunnels and ditches. The opening and closing base doors breed interesting strategies, and you've gotta love a map that has the Scorpion tank as a default vehicle. The explosives on this map only serve as a hazard for the vehicles, as they are too spread apart to be used as a defensive weapon against intruders on foot. The bright white snow makes active camo VERY effective on this map. It's a great 2 flag CTF map and will probably work just fine for other large team objective games.

WARLOCK - an INTENSE slayer map and average lifespans tend to be on the short side because of the small space and lack of things to hide behind. This sucks if you're a camper but I like maps and scenarios that force me to get comfortable with new strategies. There are no "power" weapons save for four shotguns, if they count, forcing you to use strategy to gun down your opponent on a level playing field as opposed to blowing them away with a bazooka from a distance. Visually superior to the sterile scenery of the original it was built from (Wizard in Halo 1.)

TURF - I've only played Turf in 1 flag CTF but it was pretty fun. The tight spaces are great for sneaking up on the opposition's base, and equally handy for staging ambushes. My only reservation about objective games on this map is that it is so small - with such short distances to run with the flag or bomb, a single slip up on the part of the defensive team will most likely cost them the round... games like this will probably be pretty short. However, that same small size will make it a fantastic slayer map. Sadly, there is no sword - perhaps Bungie knew I'd "pwn" this map into the ground if they included it [/joke].

SANCTUARY - A circular arena, and a fairly large one at that. This is probably best suited for 4 on 4 team objective or slayer games, leaning more towards assault variants. A visually and atmospherically pleasing map, especially on blue team's side where there is flowing water and a humongous tree. There is a sword but wide open spaces limit its usefulness. Again, a map more situated for medium sized objective or team slayer games, although I wouldn't recommend it for free-for-all slayer.

ELONGATION - A remake of Halo 1 map Longest. It is asthetically far superior to its predecessor, being based on the space station level of Halo 2's campaign with dials and knobs and lights and various things I will never, ever understand. Great lighting effects on the steel plated walls and a brilliant window view of the Earth and its moon. Removing the ladders was a smart move on Bungie's part - not only does it make climbing to the second level much less risky and awkward (and more realistic looking,) but it offers another tight space for close encounter skirmishes. The crates can be an asset as well as a liability as they offer cover and serve as stepping stones, but also make it more difficult to retreat. Great small team 2 flag CTF/assault and small or medium sized slayer map.

BACKWASH - Fantastic atmospheric effects on this one, which is based on the 343 Guilty Spark level of Halo 1. The fog is a tremendously significant element to this map as it hides the location of weapons and breaks up the outline of your opponents (which can also work to your advantage.) The soundtrack is very "lush" sounding, complimented by the amusing if also distracting hum of 2401 Penitent Tangent as it occasionally passes overhead. It's set up with two bases for objective games but lends itself the most to slayer varients, with the hunt-or-be-hunted vibe created by the vision obscurring fog and many trees.

GEMINI - Visually one of my favorite new maps, designed after the High Charity level on Halo 2's campaign mode. All the futuristic sliding doors and random noises are there, and the view of High Charity's core from the "back porch" area is some of the best scenery in all of Halo 2's multiplayer maps. Due to the small nature of the map, it probably won't make a great map for assault or CTF variants, but it's perfectly fine for slayer variants as well as oddball, juggernaut, et cetera.

RELIC - sort of a "storming the beach" style map designed for single flag CTF and assault. Unlike Zanzibar, the water is actually a hazard as you will 'fall to your death' if you swim out too far (something to think about when screeching around haphazardly in your warthog.) This is a very unique map with a very specific setup - the defensive structure is extremely difficult to gain access to as you must travel all the way to the back of it, on the opposite side of the island, to find a ramp, with lots of open space and few obstacles to hide behind inbetween. Also, there is a two way teleporter that can be activated from inside the base (a double-edged sword, as you can imagine.)

TERMINAL - Probably the busiest/most complicated map in the pack, it can be very disorienting before you learn where everything is. It is based on a train terminal somewhere in New Mombasa and the bullet train itself is a very important aspect of this map. No attack can be launched on the defensive base without taking the train into consideration, which deals out sudden death indescriminately. Your vehicle will not save you. After getting your bearings straight, this is a pretty fun map and a flexible one at that. It's complexity lends itself to large slayer games (at least 8 people because of its size) and the bases are designed in a lopsided fashion that encourages single flag CTF in specific.

And now the bonus content - I would not recommend buying this pack based purely on the bonus content. First, the cinematic is novel, and relatively well done, but ultimately isn't about anything. And it's only about 2 or 3 minutes long. The documentary is a lot better and covers each map individually, but in the end it is still too short for comfort - I'm sure there is a lot more to tell us and most of this information is available in the booklet as well, if you're patient enough to read it. Overall, the incentive to buy it comes down to permanence of ownership, since now that you have the disc in your hands, you can reload the maps onto your Xbox no matter how many Xboxes you go through or if your Live service goes kaput. A second, morally questionable, incentive is that I'm pretty sure you can use this to load the maps and game upgrades onto friends' Xboxes if you're having a LAN party and discover that one of the rotten b*stards doesn't have any of the new maps you want to play on (I'm pretty sure Microsoft installed a sort of failsafe involving registration similar to Windows XP, so said rotten b*stard probably would not be able to take those maps online.)

Overall, great purchase, great maps - Bungie did a fantastic job with these fun, unique maps and asthetically they have outdone the old maps by a LOT. One can only hope we will be blessed with another string of great map add-ons some day in the future, but with the immenant release of the Xbox 360, I'm not holding my breath. Soak 'em in.

Descent 2 (Jewel Case) Review

Descent 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game really set a standard for head-to-head and group slugfests online, along with Quake. The graphics were top-notch and were greatly enhanced if you scored a co-processing graphics card (remember those?), and gameplay was something else.

Skipping the nostalgia for a moment, I'll outline the basic premise. You shoot stuff, and rescue hostages. That's about it, and it lacks subtelty in description because gameplay is equally blunt. The weapons are the main character here: bombs that will wipe you out, invisibility defenses that let you sneak up on enemies, mines that will follow targets around corners when triggered, and a gun that can only be described as a fully-automatic rail gun.

The levels are, without qualification, individual works of art.The designers (and the many free add-on levels you can download) are simply incredible, and depending on your particular strengths, you can always find a level to compete (although the level of competition can be extremely high).

If you play this game straight-through as one-player, you may tire of the big boss endings, and it does get ridiculously difficuly two-thirds of the way in.Still, if you manage it the game is a visual stunner and six degrees of freedom is something to behold.

If you have the nerve to fight a human opponent, you should still find plenty of takers for your challenge.Be warned, cheaters exist (albeit less in the broadband-for-all era) and if you suspect your game is rigged, you can always find another one.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Review

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Average Reviews:

Before the Nintendo 64 ever came out, "Turok: Dinosaur Hunter" was one of the games that I couldn't wait to play after seeing the previews of it in various magazines. When I finally got to play it, I was impressed with everything in the game, except for one problem. The game is one of the hardest corridor shooters I've ever played, and still is to this date. The graphics with the mystical backgrounds and cool-looking dinosaurs, couldn't have been much better. The control is just like it needs to be and the sound and music also go great with the game. The only bad thing about "Turok: Dinosaur Hunter" is that most of the levels are almost impossible to pass, and there could've been a multiplayer game to give the game some better replay value.
While you play Turok, you can use several weapons, and you'll have to make your way across some levels by doing such feats as going swimming and climbing tall vines to get to where you need to be."Turok: Dinosaur Hunter" is a great corridor shooter in just about every way and I recommend everybody to give it a shot.Just be prepared for a great challenge.

Bleach Heat the Soul 6 Review

Bleach Heat the Soul 6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First and foremost, this is an import title and you will need a guide to play it if you don't understand Japanese. If you have played any other games in this series then you should have no issues. All of the menus are in English as well so navigating through different modes is no problem, there is a good guide on gamefaqs that will help you learn the basics and unlock characters. The presentation and layout of this game is excellent, very polished and simple. Graphically I am completely amazed, all of the characters look like they were ripped straight out of the show, the backgrounds are all spot on as well. Plenty of music from the show is in here as well as voice acting by the cast of the anime. This is the largest roster in a Bleach fighting game to date, pretty much everyone you would expect is here. Several Vaizard are included as well as most of the Espada, some of the former Espada and a few other Arrancar thrown in for good measure. Aizen and company in their fancy new duds to boot...and Tessai from the Turn Back the Pendulum arc. As this game just came out in May, a few characters are not yet playable as their abilities had not yet been revealed in the manga or on the anime. Barragan and Starrk are out unfortunately, Hallibel is included though which is a nice touch. Ulquiorra in his second released form and Ichigo's released Hollow form aren't here either...but the next installment is sure to have them all...sweet. The animation is as fluid as I've seen on the PSP, not a trace of slowdown. Load times are minimal which is tragically rare on the PSP. Gameplay is very simple, easy to learn but it will take time to fully master. You can get away with button mashing for the most part if that's your style, you'll need to hone your skills to unlock everything though. There are tag battles if you wish, arcade mode, vs cpu mode, training mode etc etc. If the price you see here doesn't jive with you...which it shouldn't...you can get this from several different import sites or snatch it up on ebay for much less money. If you are a Bleach superfan, and you almost certainly are, BUY IT.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Review

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night harkens back to the early and great Castlevanias of the old NES, but with vastly updated graphics, gameplay, and even ambiance.Sure, it's still a 2-D scroller where you roam around and jump around on platforms and what not, but it's at the top of the heap. The game starts somewhat oddly with you as a vampire hunter facing off against Dracula in a fairly wacky fight that always reminds me of a pro wrestling match. You beat Dracula, at which point time warps ahead and you switch to Alucard, Dracula's remorseful son (spell Alucard backwards..yah, clever) who brings the fight to Dracula's vast and labyrinthe castle in an effort to do away with his evil sire for all time.At first I was put off by what I thought was a bizarre and inelegant introduction (the human vampire hunter is a character from one of the mediocre middle Castlevania games, and is very unwieldy) but it turns out the manner in which you use him to defeat Dracula "historically" in the plot affects Alucard's starting abilities.Meaning if you beat up on Drakula with magic, Alucard later favors magic.Ditto for melee combat.
Anyway, the game is lush and filled with endless amounts of loot.Any monster has a chance to drop rare goodies when slain (based on Alucard's Luck stat), fake walls crumble to reveal hidden platemail, accidentally-tripped switches open bookcases or trapdoors, and zillions of types of monsters appear from all over the place. The music is great and quite haunting, and the game's RPG and money system are quite well developed.Alucard has quick "combo" spells you can use while fighting, and many of the weapons, shields, and armors he finds have their own effects which have to be discovered in game play.I've located weapons that let Alucard teleport, summon the undead to fight for him, call lightning, ice, or fire, or even waves of holy light down on his foes.Everything from helms to circlets to rings to boots can be worn, and Alucard eventually even develops the ability to transform into traditional vampire modes.Dissipate into a swirling cloud of mist and waft through a ceiling vent to escape your enemies, turn into a wolf and charge through crowds of zombies, or transform into a bat and fly around breathing fire on everyone.Lastly Alucard collects various magical relics throughout the game, that do everything from let him breathe underwater to have permament familiars that float around with him on screen and help him out (the dancing runesword is not to be missed). As an example of the thought put into this game, your familiars themselves even gain experience and go up levels, growing both stronger and smarter over time. For example, the runesword familiar at first just kinda floats along behind you, lethargically swinging at things long after they took a bite out of you.But after a while it turns into a gleaming heat seeking weapon of vengeance, mercilessly smiting anything the second it shows up on screen. At one point I turned Alucard into mist and just drifted around while the sword familiar took out a boss for me.This game also has more items and secrets in it than your average Final Fantasy, and is more addictive. It is also one of the least frustrating games you can find; you can save as often as you want in save rooms you find on your map (in a coffin, natch), heal yourself easily, and as a vampire you're more than a match for the sluggish beasts you meet early on.The challenge of the game comes from an easy balance of combat and puzzle solving, rather than a heavy reliance on one or the other.
Lastly, and most entertainingly, the bosses in this game are amazing.Unlike earlier side scrollers where the game progressed through 'levels', in Symphony of the Night you simply roam around an enormous, maze-like castle. You never know when suddenly a steel grate will drop behind you and you'll find yourself trapped in a fight with, oh, a grotesque giant mummy suspended on steel hooks that takes up 6 screens worth of animation. That's just the sort of thing that's worth the price of admission.

Frequency Review

Frequency
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was my pleasure to participate in a couple of focus group tests of Frequency. Whenever a test was over, I would threaten to show up the next day at the developer's office uninvited, just to play some more. It's that good. To appreciate how great Frequency is, you really have to play it. Like SSX, Frequency adds innovative new play mechanics to a stale and stagnant genre, in this case, rhythm/music games, and creates an altogether transcendent experience. Unlike other music games, memorizing and repeating button presses is not the crux of the gameplay. Here, instead of mimicking a song, you actually create a song, using timing and reflexes to lay down beats, bass, and guitars, building each song from a metronome to an all-out jam. For example, if the player can successfully lay down a certain number of beats on the drum track, the drums are "locked in", and the player can then start working on the bass while the drum loop continues. "Lock in" the bass and you can move on to guitar, vocals, etc. However, as the song progresses, if a change in the drums or bass or whatever is required, the player must scroll back to that instrument and lay down the new beats. This is all achieved through a gorgeous 3-D graphic interface that looks like a trippy, hi-tech version of Tempest. The overall gameplay effect is a lot like a plate-spinning act. Power-ups and point multipliers spice up the fun, and a multiplayer mode is included where up to 4 players try to "capture" as many parts of the song as possible. And online play will be possible when Sony gets the network up and running. Also of note is the "remix" mode where you can take the awesome music in the game, and remix it freestyle, beat by beat. Although not as versatile as MTV Music Generator, it's a lot more intuitive, and a hell of a lot more fun. All the music included in the game by the likes of Chemical Brothers, Dub pistols, Paul Okenfield, No Doubt, and others is top-shelf stuff.

Bella Sara Review

Bella Sara

This is a great horse game for the DS whether you're into the Bella Sara website or not. I grew up during the pokemon card craze so having a game where you collect cards was a nice throw back to my younger days. It took me just under a week to complete all the challenges and find all the cards. The cards represent beautiful artwork. There are three different trails with different challenges for each and then there are three different jump courses that you can ride multiple times to collect all the cards. You get 6 different magical horses to ride, the 6th being a winged horse you get after completing all the challenges. Who wouldn't want to play a horse game where you get to ride a winged horse?
However there are cons. The graphics are sub par. The cards look great, but the actual horses you ride look like they're poorly molded from clay. Not much detail was paid to how the game horses look. Also the horse tires too fast in my opinion. After it gets tired, you have to go through the grooming, feeding, cleaning the stall, and petting routine all over again. This gets tiring and repetitive, especially when you have six horses. A third complaint is that you get the flying horse too late in the game to do much with it. The challenges are all complete. I used the horse to go through the jump courses again and collect cards and I suppose this is what you're supposed to do, but I would like to see some challenges designated just for that horse as some of the other challenges are.
Overall it is a very fun game and worth the purchase if you're into horse games.

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition Review

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is a great arcade racing game.Realism is not part of the game and that is fine I really didn't want that.I have seen a lot of people however comparing it to NFSU2 and saying that it blows it away.I somewhat disagree. The only things this game had an advantage on NFSU2 was the licensed vehicles and mods you were able to make. The one thing I however loved about NFSU2 was driving my car around with the engine and sound effects turned up.I loved hearing that engine and the great sound effects. It really improved the game. However Midnight Club Dub Ed seemed to take their sound effects straight from the Grand Theft Auto series. This works fine in GTA but in a cusomizing racing game it is really a let down.I mean the sounds aren't even remotely close to sounding real.I really emphasized on this because it bothered me the most.

The next thing is the graphics.Once again not as sharp as NFSU2 but still good enough to be enjoyable. The details throughout the cities are nice touches. They could have improved this a little but it is good enough where I wouldn't want it any better due to loading times.

Control of the vehicles is fine. The only thing that bothers me is when you press the accelerator button it is full throttle or none. This bothered me because I couldn't cruise around at normal speeds with the manual transmission on.Like for instance I would drive in NFSU2 down some streets at normal speeds in sixth gear like you would really drive the car in real life.In this game you either go full speed or are coasting. It just doesn't feel real.

The gameplay however I believe is where this game does shine. It is challenging and rewarding. There are some races that took me quite some time to complete.Sometimes you will just have to put the controller down and walk away before you start throwing things.I can not tell you how many times I would be a turn away from the finish line in the lead and low and behold here comes a car, bus, or something else out of nowhere and smack! You get passed race over. This game is well worth the money and despite some drawbacks I do reccomend it and hope they come out with a new one.
One more thing. This game dogs on some of the American cars again. For instance the Z06 Corvette has better real life handling and speed times than many of the other cars in the game but you wouldn't know that from the game.It controls like a classic car and doesn't have the speed it should.

My Sega CDX has one of the old 3-pin connector cables - that means if I moved the controller the wrong way or sneezed, I ran the risk of losing the picture or the sound whenever I hooked up this game system.

This cable worked right out of the box. It took about a minute to hook up, and the picture clarity has vastly improved. I know, it's a Sega CD, which has grainy video anyway...but it's clear grain!

I would highly recommend this cable for any retro gamers who own a Sega CDX, or any of the Sega Genesis 2 or 3 consoles.

Medal of Honor Collection Review

Medal of Honor Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The classic war games of this vein (MOH) are updated for your enjoyment on the PS2!It's a shooting game for those who like historical accuracy (with some artstic license, of course) mixed in with some pretty intense gameplay.

In the Medal of Honor Collection, you have 3 games to play: Medal of Honor: Frontline, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, and Medal of Honor: European Assault. The first of the 3 games deals with the major battles of WWII, including the water landing at Normandy in June, 1944. The second game is strictly set in the Pacific Theatre, and opens with your character attempting to escape a damaged destroyer before it is sunk by Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, in December, 1941. The final game in the collection is made with a whole new MOH format, which includes an adrenaline feature so you can go nuts on the enemy without taking damage, floating ammo/heath kit icons (instead of the standard items-on-the-ground format from the previous games.

MOH Frontline is my favorite game so far.The D-Day assault mission is VERY intense. It remainds me of the scene from Saving Private Ryan! There is a recoil on the weapons when firing, and also when a bomb drops, the entire screen shakes. It makes it very difficult to get a good accuracy rating.

MOH Rising Sun is a great game!I have never played a shooter so throughly steeped in the Pacific Theatre as is this MOH title.

MOH European Assault is a good game too, yet I haven't played that one trough very far yet!

One element that successfully ties all 3 games together is, your character actually works cooperatively with other computer controlled allies that help you during the missions. This is especially true in MOH Risisng Sun, and MOH European Assault.A great series of games awaits you in this Collection!

I have not played the console versions of GTA extensively, but from what I have played, this game accurately captures everything and ports it over successfully to the handheld format. I wouldn't call this the best game for the PSP, but it's definitely in the Top 25.

DragonBall Z Supersonic Warriors 2 Review

This game has lots of strong spots in it and some weak spots.
The game has over 30 characters all with good graphics. One of the weak spots is the part in story mode where you have to unlock Broly. It tookme an hour to even figure out how to unlock him. In the game there is a part called free battle where you get to pick out your characters. You can also have up to three characters. Out of all my games this is probably my favorite one.
