Fallout 1 / Fallout 2 Bundle (Jewel Case) Review

Fallout 1 / Fallout 2 Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just finished both games, and I highly recommend this bundle set to anyone who likes (1) RPG games, (2) Post-apocalyptic themed anythings, (3) games that don't make you do anything or (4) science fiction in general. The basic premise of both games, as recounted by numerous previous reviews, is that you have to make it in a world defined by the typical nuclear fallout (ahem) disaster. However, there are so many ways to make it, and they're all such fun, that these games should appeal to most people.Fallout 1 is a shorter game but in many ways is more elegant; if you play it conscientiously you'll have a feeling of satisfaction at the end for having seen and done most of it.Fallout 2 is much larger in scope and in time commitment, and unfortunately suffers a bit from it.. there are more bugs, more 'dead' items and quests that were intended to have some purpose in the game but never did, and so on.Some could argue this, in fact, merely adds to the gritty reality of a game where everything doesn't end up in a neat little package at the end, and there aren't answers to all the questions.Or maybe the programming staff was just overworked. In any event, the games are addictive and reward curiosity.High points:
1)Emphasis on character development.A karma counter keeps track of your overall good/badness, and as you progress you are offered various 'Perks' that enhance or define your character, such as Salesman or Demolition Expert or Kama Sutra Master.Others you earn through gameplay itself.Multiple avenues of play exist for any type of character..while your first character in both games is probably going to emphasize gunplay and high Agility, later on you can try a diplomatic or manipulative or pure thieving character as you see fit, and play what amounts to an almost completely different game.
2)So many explosions. These games have lots of fighting, on a turn-based system allowing for micromanagement of both yourself and your 'friendly' NPCs.Use burst fire to take out packs of charging wolves, aim your scoped hunting rifle at someone's leg to keep them from chasing you, send a rocket down a corridor into a pack of unsuspecting guards. It's all there..and the death animations are not for the faint of heart.
A few negatives:
1)As is typical in RPGs, making 'bad' or 'evil' decisions or dialogue choices tends to screw you.If you want, just pretend your evil character secretly enjoys the hypocrisy of agreeing to rescue someone's orphaned kitten with a boo-boo on its paw; it would be nice someday if RPGs rewarded evil characters for doing evil things.
2)Armor.Basically the goal of both games is to get your first suit of Power Armor. This transforms both games from a grueling, constantly-reloading ordeal of random accidental deaths and burst-fire horrors to a breeze. This, of course, makes perfect sense...once you're a walking tank, most things bounce off. However (although Fallout 2 handles this a bit better) there is very little middle ground..even with Combat Armor II (the next step down) you get mauled a lot.
3)Uncontrolled NPCs.Sure, by definition you shouldn't be able to control an NPC, but it can get truly annoying when one of your NPCs blasts something, and then moves 1 space directly in front of your other NPC for no reason, and then that second NPC, naturally, fires a machine gun directly into his head.It makes you wonder if 'friendly fire accidents' are really accidents.Depending on your party size, you can spend a lot of time watching your allies gun each other down like post apocalyptic three stooges.
Those aside, the games are very detailed and can be played as quickly or as slowly as one wishes, with numerous subplots branching off the main plot. The first game does have a timer for the completion of the main task, but that can be extended during the game, and in fact the game goes on (sans timer) once that task is completed.Fallout 2 does away with that completely, allowing you effectively all the time you want to explore. So if you always wondered if how Mad Max would have done if he'd had more ammo for his shotgun and access to the occasional flamethrower, pick them up.

Product Description:
The science-fiction role-playing games Fallout and Fallout 2 have been bundled together for the complete post-nuclear-war game experience. In Fallout you are dwelling in a self-sufficient fallout shelter called Vault-13, three generations removed from the apocalyptic war. When your shelter's water filter breaks down, you are sent out into the unknown wasteland to find a replacement filter or a new source of fresh water. The Fallout adventure unfolds as a gritty tale of discovery, paranoia, and survival. Mature gamers are in for a classic role-playing game that has earned a cult following just as loyal as the fans of the Mad Max movies that inspired it.
Fallout 2 takes place 80 years after the events in the original game. You are the Chosen One, a tribal ancestor of Fallout's vault dweller. Your tribe has built a modest settlement in an isolated corner of the futuristic Californian wasteland, but you must find a Garden of Eden Creation Kit to sustain the village. During your adventure, you'll encounter misfits and monsters ranging from gangsters to supermutants. Twice as many weapons are at your disposal, including the M72 Gauss Rifle, M3A1 "Grease Gun" SMG, Louisville Slugger, H&K CAWS, and the Solar Scorcher. In addition, you can give your character combat postures such as berserk, aggressive, defensive, or cowardly.
Parents should be aware that the games contain violence and some sexual situations. Though you can adjust the tone down a bit through the main control panel, developments that occur on the adult setting are integral to the story.

Real-time strategy game set in a fantasy universe. Set on a world called Argoth the game is based on a conflict between two forces of allied races, one side is led by humans and the other by orcs. Both magical and technologically-based weapons are incorporated. You can control either side. You play against the computer through a series of single-player missions or participate in multi-player games with up to seven other people (on-line, via modem, serial link or LAN). The gameplay involves resource management and large battles. The game has a lot of depth and numerous unit and building types feature. The game employs an easy-to-use interface and command menu. The game is played on an isometrically-viewed landscape that is rendered in detail, as are the various units which are 3D. Good cutscenes intersperse the single-player game.

Roller Coaster Tycoon Review

Roller Coaster Tycoon

This addicting game is a best seller and for a good reason. This fun (and sometimes funny) game requires a lot of free time, a strategic brain, and a good imagination.
RCT has a very user-friendly interface. It is easy toroam around your park, create and maintain rides, hire staff (janitors, mechanics, security guards, and entertainers), keep the park clean, andmuch more. Even if you're new to this game, a quick overlook at the game'sfeatures will get you going. But even a quick look won't satisfy you withthis very addicting game. I can guarantee that you'll want to play this allday and night.
Creating your own ride is very fun. Make all the drops, vertical loops, etc. you want. But be careful to keep within the budgetrange! Sounds hard? It gets harder as it unlocks more parks as you completescenarios. But no matter how hard or frustrating it is, it will get morefun as you research more rides and attractions as time passes.
So ifyou're trying to beat the park objective, keep within budget range, createthe best roller coaster, keep your guests happy, or just play for fun, you'll agree from the minute you get into the game that the best sim gameever has finally come to PC!
The expansion pack is a great addition to agreat game. Be sure to include the Corkscrew Follies addition with yourorder.

Mega Man X Collection Review

Mega Man X Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is true that the X games are well-made, but I would say differently of the collection itself. There are numerous text glitches (missing and misspelled words), and several of the unlockable "extras" are things already present in the games. Also, in two of the games, not all the PS2's buttons can be assigned, making standardized play impossible.A major problem, though, is the muffled sound; somehow, the music was programmed in very quiet. If you're looking for an awesome compilation format with plenty of bells and whistles (like the Sonic Mega Collection and its "Plus" addition), look elsewhere. If you don't care about any extra stuff, then go ahead and get it.

The Sims Superstar Expansion Pack Review

The Sims Superstar Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many reviews have already described all of the new interactions and items that come with this expansion pack, so I'll focus on some of the things that may not be mentioned that I would have wanted to know before buying it.
1. Overall I would say this expansion involves more work than the others. Becoming famous is an all consuming occupation leaving your Sims little time for anything else. Sims must spend countless hours in Studiotown.
2. The game cannot be saved while a Sim is in Studiotown (much like the downtown area of Hot Date). This is a problem if you experience frequent crashes with your game. I find I need to take my Sim home where I can save the game every time he/she has raised their fame score, so that I don't lose it because of a crash. This is time consuming.
3. Sims run out of energy very quickly in Studiotown so not much can be accomplished in each visit. (only one visit is allowed per day)
4. Sims need famous friends in order to become famous. I find it very difficult to make friends with these famous Sims, the friendship scores don't seem to increase as quickly as with regular Sims.
5. This one only applies if you have downloaded objects from online Sims sites: I have a user-created teleporter in my game, and it no longer works. The game crashes whenever I try to use it. This forces me to use the phone to invite other Sims over, leaving it up to chance rather than being able to import them at will. (Much harder to increase the friendship score this way). Teleporters worked with every other expansion pack, but not Superstar as of yet (hopefully someone will fix this).
I don't mean to point out only the negative aspects of the game, I do enjoy this game but am a little disappointed that it takes so much more work than I had expected. I do love all of the new interactions that are available, and like watching my Sims sing, act or model.I'm still looking forward to an obsessed fan following my famous Sim home. My Sims don't have a high enough fame score for that yet :) (Also, there aren't really 3 separate career paths, Sims access all of the items one at a time as their fame score increases, so they are essentially rock stars, actors and models).
Overall, if you love the Sims, you'll love this expansion pack as well. But be prepared to spend a lot of time trying to become famous.

The Sims Makin' Magic Expansion Pack Review

The Sims Makin' Magic Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow.. I haven't written a review on this game sooner because I've been having too much fun PLAYING it since the day it came out!!In my opinion, this is probably the best Sims expansion pack yet.I have enjoyed every pack though, none of them were bad. This one just has so many fun new items, the new spells are a BLAST, and Magic Town is just a hoot.
Some of the cool new features:
*Magic Town*
This place rocks! Not only can you buy stuff, you can take a ride on a rollercoaster, do quests for the merchants (and get handsomely rewarded!), perform magic tricks for magicoins, and so much more!
*New Spells*
The spells are the coolest part of the expansion pack, no questions on that!Sometimes the funnest part is making your spell fail! And there are just so many fun little easter eggs thrown in.. like when your "Horn of Plenty" spell fails.. you can run around kissing all the frogs (frog prince perhaps?? ;)Also you can use the Enchant spell to turn your gnomes in to great gardners (just be wary of casting the Perfect Garden spell when you have live gnomes!).
*New Items*
WOW they added a lot of new items!!You can grow your own grapes and elderberries, then make them in to nectar to sell or keep. You can also buy baking supplies and bake bread in your new oven. You can churn butter, you can make gargoyles, get honey from your beehive, skeleton maid to clean your house.. the list goes on and on.
*Magic Town HOMES*
Ok, these homes are neat - but my beef is that they are so small! For one Sim it might work, but I moved in a huge magic family and had to tear down the house and build a new one.The houses on the lots are neat - I just wish they were bigger!
*Pet Dragons*
These are a lot of fun!The only thing is I think they might be a little buggy still. My nice dragon got to the point where it would bite my Sims if they tried to give it any attention, then it got mad it wasn't getting attention and packed its bags and left. :(
Overall - I give this pack 5 stars.I would give it more if I could! It's one of the best packs yet, and probably one with the least bugs! Its a lot of fun for all Sims fans.HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes Review

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start this review by saying METAL GEAR SOLID for PSX is my all-time favorite game ever. And before that was my favorate game of all time, SNATCHER for the Sega CD was (both written and directed by Hideo Kojima). After the huge let down that was Metal Gear Solid 2, I was looking forward to this remake that would feature the same great gameplay mechanics as MGS2 with the same great storyline of MGS.Did this game deliver?Yes.Well...sort of.While the game has much prettier graphics and gameplay, there are some things changed where they never should have messed with perfection:

1.) My first gripe is the decline in voice acting.Naomi, Mei Ling, and Natasha have all lost their ethnic accents which gave them personality in the original, so now they just seem stiff and boring. The voice acting overall is just not as good, and I didn't like the tweaks made to the script.

2.) The absence of the classic music that made scenes so exciting in favor of that weird techno crap from MGS2.

3.)While I do like some of the extended cutscenes, such as the first encounter with the ninja, others are just ridiculously over-the-top, and too matrix wannabie.

4.) While the game does sport the much improved gameplay of MGS2, the level layouts are exactly the same and were not designed with these play mechanics in mind, rendering them pretty much unnecessary to use, with the exception of the first person view mode... which, as another reviewer pointed out, deletes certain challenges from the game.

Overall, it just doesn't have the magic or the soul that the original does.If you never played the original game, none of the above will bother you, so I highly recommend you buy this. For those of you who have played the original, it's worth a rental to play through with the spiffy new graphics, cutscenes, etc.But I'd take original over this remake any day of the week.If you want to play a remake that surpasses its original, I recommend the Resident Evil remake for the Gamecube.

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction Expansion Set Review

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction Expansion Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's simply amazing how character development can go in so many directions with this game. Seven character classes are now offered, and focusing on certain options within any of the 3 different "skill trees" of each class can itself forever change the way in which you relate to the game. Characters can become so specialized that names have been attributed to them (lexicons can be found on the Net); for example, if you choose to play a character from the new Druid class, he can be differentiated into a Shifter, Summoner, Elementist, Botanist, Windbreaker, Bowling Druid, etc. [lingo used by D2:LoD addicts, these aren't terms that the game itself uses]. It could be said that choosing from these different paths renews the playability of the game, as you are forced to figure out new strategies to survive, especially in the Nightmare and Hell difficulty settings.
I've been playing this expansion since its release, and can hardly believe how much I yet have to learn. The Druid class is a clever addition to original 5, and quite different from the others; the new Assassin class I cannot in good faith critique, as I have only developed one character from that class. Act 5 has a much different flavor, and disposing of Baal can be a highly frustrating task, if you don't have a plan [Hint: get his back against the wall on the runway, slow him down, and hit him without a pause]. The addition of charms and class-specific items vastly improves your chances for survival, and the new set items are geared towards the more advanced players. However, other improvements put forth in the expansion balance it out in favor of the enemy (e.g., you can no longer dominate simply by having a Level 25 Fire Wall).
Lately I've discovered several websites devoted to the game, and features of the game that previously made little sense now are revealed as worthwhile to me. If you are getting the impression that this game can create a black hole in your weekly schedule, then I think I have gotten my point across. For example, tonite I am supposed to be reading an article titled "Parenteral Nutrition in Pregnancy," but instead I am researching new strategies to keep my Necromancer alive (can you blame me?)
Finally, there is the adrenaline rush motive. When trying to stay alive during some of the more challenging moments, your heart will be racing and you might even break into a sweat. Warnings written in the other reviews (about how addiction to this game can trash your GPA and cause your girlfriend to seek out someone who has never heard of Diablo or its sequels) should be taken very seriously. As a graduate student I came close to smashing the disc on several occasions with the thought of freeing myself...that would doubtless have been a waste of money, as I would have promptly jogged down to the store to pick up another copy.

The martialarts techniques make the assassin a powerful melee fighter while her shadowdisciplines give her powerful and versatile magical attacks. Her trapsare also effective as they let the assassin cause widespread damage throughenemy ranks. Mafia Review

Mafia
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you like Grand Theft Auto, you will like this game. The two games certainly follow a similar approach, although there are quite significant differences (aside from the time this game is set in).
Personally, I like the graphics in Mafia better. Overall,t he whole story is told in more style, and is much more immersive IMO.
However, GTA offers more freedom while playing the game. Mafia offers a lot of freedom too, but in order to fulfill missions, one usually sticks to one path. Some people told me they don't like that as much. Personally, I like the Mafia gameplay at least as good as the GTA gameplay. Sure, GTA gives you a mission such as "destroy this car", and you have a million ways to accomplish that. Mafia gives you a mission such as "have this race car manipulated", and naturally, there is one place to pick it up, and one place to bring it to have the work done.
While you play the game however, that difference doesn't matter very much. In fact, Mafia provides a somewhat tighter storyline to provide a more detailed, intriguing story. I personally prefer that.
Mafia also seems to have a bit more variety in the missions. They have everything from missions on foot where you shoot 1st person style, to driving missions, to even races.
I like the controls in Mafia much better than GTA. In GTA, things never seem quite right. The controls used don't work truely well when you are an foot, and they don't work very well in the cars either. But they kinda work for both. In Mafia, you use the regular FPS-style keyboard and mouse combination when you walk, and a whole different set of controls when you drive. In fact, a (force feedback) steering wheel works very well in Mafia, while I found it to work not too well at all in GTA.

Every company these days has their own version of a real-time strategy (RTS) game and many aren't worth the price as they are cheap rip-offs of other popular ideas. However, if you'd like to play a game created by the company most responsible for the RTS craze, then look no further than Warcraft 3.Not only do you get the most balanced RTS game available which makes for better multiplayer competition but you also get one heck of a single-player campaign. The story in Warcraft 3 is terrific and probably better than most role-playing games. To top it off, Warcraft 3 combines superior graphics with the best artwork you will ever see in a real-time strategy game. The orcs, undead legions, humans, elves and many worlds they explore are a visual as well as strategic experience. And best of all, this game that was well worth the price when it was released is now packaged with the top notch expansion, The Frozen Throne, which is an expansion that is actually better than most regular RTS games these days.If you've never tried the Blizzard series of real-time strategy games, you're missing out. This company is pure class and even provides a free online gaming service called BattleNet that allows you to match your wits against thousands of online gamers.Whether it be releasing some of the most stable games in years or banning griefers on BattleNet that formed a childish organization whose only intention was to backstab allies in multi-player competition, Blizzard is known as one of the best gaming companies in the business, and it shows with their games.
