Burnout 2: Point of Impact Review

Burnout 2: Point of Impact
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Burnout, Criterion's original traffic-weaving arcade racer, was a hit-and-miss affair with many.It delivered an intense racing experience, but was marred by short length, fuzzy graphics, and annoying crash replays. However, Criterion has taken all complaints into account, and delivered their masterpiece:Burnout 2 - Point of Impact. It looks better and is deeper, but retains the same magnetic gameplay of the first game.Burnout 2 is one of the best games on the system, and is one of the best arcade racers to come along in a long time.
The first thing you'll notice is the graphical upgrade.Anyone who thinks the PS2 is underpowered should look at what Criterion's been able to coax out of it.Burnout 2 is filled with visual beauty:lens flares, weather effects, beautifully rendered car models, lifelike tracks brimming with ambient activity and traffic, and wince-causing crashes. The roads are choked with traffic, each moving independently (Criterion says there are several different types of AI behavior now). All this at a screaming 60 frames per second...without an ounce of slowdown - even in multiplayer. When you consider the detail, the speed, and the amount of moving objects on the screen at any one time, Burnout 2 is one of the best-looking games on the PS2.Criterion and its Renderware tool deserve some serious praise for what they've accomplished.
But games aren't all graphics, are they?Burnout 2 has some of the most enjoyable, adrenaline-pumping gameplay you'll find. The premise is simple:race AI-controlled opponents as fast as you can, along checkpoint-riddled courses overflowing with traffic which serves no purpose except to get in your way.Weaving amongst the logging trucks, passenger cars, and buses, time running out, AI on your tail....what a rush. The CPU cars aren't perfect, either - they'll crash as often as you do, making the races much more realistic and forgiving.Go too slow, and you'll miss the next checkpoint, losing the race - the game WANTS you to take risks, and constantly rewards you for it. If you should be unlucky enough to hit another car, be ready for a ferociously portrayed impact. However, the replays have been much shortened from the first game - one short replay and you're back on the track in no time.
Another complaint that's been addressed is the lack of modes.Burnout 2 sports a training mode called Offensive Driving 101, which teaches you the advantages of power-sliding, jumping, driving against traffic, getting Near Misses, etc - all of which fill your Burnout meter. When full, you can access a speed boost that'll launch you into serious high-g territory, complete with screen blur and a soundtrack change.Drain your meter without crashing and you get a score multiplier.Time Attack is exactly what you'd expect - try and set your best lap/course times.Pursuit Mode is also new - you're a police car chasing another vehicle, with no other purpose but to ram it into submission...while avoiding traffic yourself.Do so, and you'll unlock the car for the other modes.None of the cars are licensed - not surprising when you consider the twisted hunks of metal they become -but it's easy to see their source of inspiration (i.e. the Classic is obviously an old-school Caddy...and you can choose to make it pink!).
A brilliant new mode is called simply Crash.Criterion's smart - it knew it had a great creation with its impact engine, but fully including it in the main racing modes disrupted the flow of the races.Enter Crash mode, in which you're given a few seconds, a full Boost meter, and a busy intersection just ahead. Here, the object is to cause the biggest traffic accident you can. After you throw yourself into motor mayhem, you're treated to an ego-indulging, overhead, slo-motion replay, and you're given a final score (in insurance dollars).Plus, wreck five cars at once, and your total is multiplied by five. This mode is a stroke of genius that's huge fun with friends, in an un-ending competition to wreak the most havoc.
Championship Mode is similar to the original Burnout:progress along a series of races, unlocking cars and new courses as you go, but in Burnout 2, you're given a points system rather than the rigid "You Must Finish First To Advance" rules of the first.Burnout 2's single-player mode is longer than before, but still has the same difficulty level.Driving game vets will be able to jump in and unlock stuff right away. But once you unlock everything, you'll most likely leave Championship behind - the real replay value of Burnout is in the multiplayer and Time Attack modes (plus a couple other worthwhile secret ones!).
Burnout 2: Point of Impact is a thrill freak's dream. It's the fastest game on the PS2, looks gorgeous, has great sound, and packs tons of replay value. If you liked the original, you'll love the second - case closed. If you passed on the first, Point of Impact is definitely worth looking at, because all the gripes you mave have had have been fixed, and the new modes make Burnout 2 quite an attractive package. As the AAA-title-swamped end of 2002 approaches, Burnout 2 may get lost amongst higher-profile titles, but as of October, it's without a doubt my pick for Game of the Year...and I'm not really a huge fan of racing games.

Those of you that enjoyed the first Burnout, will absolutely LOVE the sequel. The number of improvements are mind blowing. Here is what I loved:
1. Crashes are so real that you'll be jumping and screaming with amazement from your seat.
2. XBox Live support for your high scores, biggest crashes, longest drift, best times, biggest air, etc.You can even easily compare your scores with your friend's scores.
3. Pursuit mode - You choose the cop car and the getaway car. Also available in exciting multiplayer mode.
4. The physics are 1000% better than the first Burnout. You can actually leave the roadway, flipping and spinning in the air with parts flying everywhere.
5. Not only does the built in soundtrack change while you're driving, but this also happens to your custom soundtracks.
6. TONS of races and it seems like thousands of miles of road.
7. The cars are much more detailed with life like deformations, plenty of more colors and custom series skins.
You've never experienced a full 160 mph power slide across 6 lanes of oncoming traffic until you've played Burnout 2.Buy it, don't rent it.You won't be disappointed.

Burnout 3 Takedown Review

Look. I'll break it down for you:

Do you like to race cars in video games?
Do you like to see cars crash, explode, flip, and disintegrate?

That's all you need to absolutely fall in love with this game.

Some people complain about computer cars that throw themselves at you. Hello? It's a videogame! I suspect that those complainers simply don't know how to play the game to avoid these cars.

As for the music and the DJ, guess what? You can turn them off if you don't like them.

But AI cars and punk music are not the reasons to love this game. The real star of the game is the ULTRA-realistic crash animations. I swear, you will never get bored of watching these cars crash. Sparks fly, fenders pop off, hoods crumple, and cars split in two in the most amazing animated crashes you will EVER see.

I highly recommend this game. Is it the best RACING game out there? No. But it's not about the racing. It's about watching things blow up, going really fast, and not taking this too seriously.

Have fun and buy this game!

Burnout Revenge Review

Burnout Revenge
Average Reviews:

Most racing games have you trying to dodge crashes and hitting your opponents. In Burnout Revenge, your entire goal is to create as much mayhem as possible.

We have every racing game for the XBox 360 and really love this genre. I have to admit that the first few times playing Burnout Revenge that I found it VERY hard to "hit" the cars. I would naturally dodge them. Even when I said to myself "hit them! hit them!" my fingers would zoom around them. I finally broke that habit and was able to mash them with great glee.

The graphics are really quite amazing. The car model is great of course - they have really gotten that down on the XBox 360. But more than that - your car deforms in a TON of ways. The paint scrapes off. The sides dent in. It all has to do with how you damage yourself. Cars get sheared in half, tires fly off, you name it.

There are a number of game types. There are races where you bash as you go. There are crash situations where you launch yourself into traffic and see how much destruction you can make. Other cars on the highway are fair game; bash them and watch them fly. Boost yourself to faster speeds. You develop relationships with other drivers - there will be certain cars that are out for revenge. There are grand prix matches of multi races. Each course has its own distinct feel. These aren't closed tracks - you are driving through the streets of LA, Miami, Tokyo and other areas. You get palm trees and shiny office buildings, all depending on the area you're in. There are helicopters flying overhead and a ton of car models.

The music is reaosnably good, a collection of fast-paced modern music. I would have loved it if you could choose from different music styles as well, but you can't have everything.

There's a ton of replay value here - you go back to get the top ranking in every course, aiming for those perfect scores. Since you unlock some really cool cars as you go, it can really help out to take one of the later, super cars back to the early tracks.

The LIVE feature is really neat, too. Not only can you bash other players online, but you can even record your favorite crashes and load them up. It might be voted one of the top 20 best!

If I had any complaints about this game, it would be the "look back" the game does every time you slay an enemy. Since your car is still moving very quickly, it's sometimes really tough, if you're about to hit a wall or something, to have that look away and look back happen. Also, I don't like the camera angle in general. It is very low and right against the car. I like an angle that is higher up and further back. I realize some players like both of these features as is, so I wish they would have options for a player to change these 2 items.

Still, those are minor complaints in a game that is a ton of fun. Highly recommended!

Man, I was so happy they came out with a NHRA game for PS2. It blows the IHRA games away. I enjoyed every aspect of this game! The best thing is how easy it was to figure how to play and have a chance at winning a race. That was the biggest flaw in the first IHRA game they came out with. Even though they have quite a few generic cars at least they have alot real drivers with their real cars> I recommend if your a drag racing fan and have a PS2 in your family, you should buy it, because it will give hours of enjoyment.

Burnout Revenge Review

Burnout Revenge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love the Burnout series, and it just seems to get better with each new reincarnation, Revenge is no exception. Instead of calling it Burnout 4, the name "Revenge" is implimented with the idea to get revenge on the other drivers if they take you down. It's a great new addition to an already fantastic series.

The game is faster, a lot faster. I can't believe the sense of speed in Burnout Revenge. Running at a blazing 60 frames per second at 200MPH is certainly a site to behold. No popup, no slowdown, just smooth blazing fast speed.

The most enticing new aspect is the ability to slam cars going in the same direction as you. One reviewer in here says it takes away the "charm" stating "to me the biggest rush in burnout 3 was going 200mph flying in between cars and knowing that one little mess up was going to send me flipping and slamming wildly into the wall." That's a good point, but you can still have that feeling when you choose to go in the opposite lane as on-coming traffic still can take you out just the same.

This trash every car idea was even turned into a full fledged mode called "Traffic Attack" that is strictly for smashing up cars. The goal is basically to destroy as many cars as possible within the alloted time. You get precious seconds added the more cars you smash consecutively. It's very fun mind you, but it's actually quite easy to get gold in this mode.

Opponents are very aggresive in Revenge. Cars will sideswipe you around like there is no tomorrow especially if you just sit there without defending yourself. If you get taken out directly be an opponent, you can acquire added bonuses for taking revenge on the car that knocked you out. The more revenge bonuses you get, the more goodies you'll tally up in the process.

Expect a lot more tracks in Revenge. While a few seem to be reminiscent of past Burnout games, most of these tracks are new and made from scratch. The game looks a bit darker this time around, and the tracks are longer and more grueling than ever. Still expect to attack downtown traffic infested cities, desolate crowded freeways, streets of Roman sites, wintery interstates and isolated country scenes. I still would have liked to see the "weather" factor return for Revenge and the ability to change the time of day, but that' just a little nitpick.

All the modes are back, Road Rage, single player, crash, and the new traffic attack which really adds some fun. Full multiplayer between 2-6 players is impliments online with all the modes offers. I haven't got a chance to play online yet, but you can bet your boots this game is just as fun playing online as it with yourself, and probably even more so for other gamers. If you have XBOX Live, you defintely should take the game online to rule the streets. The cars are still not authentic licensed vehicles, no Beamers, no Corvettes or Porshes. But the "creative" copies of actual cars look fantastic and they all look so cool, you wish they were actual cars. Licensed cars would have great with all the brand names, but most have a problem with trashing them in a video game, so this is how they go around it, they make up their own. And thanks to this being an "EA" game, if you have a Madden 06 save on your XBOX, you automatically get the "Madden Van" at the beginning of the game. E.A., always thinking of one more way to advertise their gridiron monster.

Burnout Revenge is better than all the Burnouts in the past. More modes, more cars, more tracks, more speed, more frenzied racing. It's the fastest racer you'll ever play and anyone, even non-gamers would probably have a blast with Burnout Revenge. A must have for XBOX owners.

Burnout 3 Takedown Review

Burnout 3 Takedown
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An email I wrote in December 2003:

"Dear Criterion Games:

I hear that Burnout 3 is going to focus on wrecking opponents. This is a mistake. It's not going to work. Why turn your brilliant, traffic-weaving Burnout franchise into a demolition derby?Change is good, but this is too much - it's now a fighting game with cars instead of a racing game.Hopefully Burnout 4 will get it right.

Regards, A Fan"

Fast-forward to September 2004.Burnout 3 is now here, and I am now sending them my sincerest apologies.I now invite them to send me a very nasty "We told you so!" response, because they've managed to not only prove me to be completely and utterly foolish for doubting them, they've made what is hands-down the best arcade racing game we're likely to play.

Criterion has managed to tap into some kind of suicidal primal instinct all of us seem to have - the urge to fly through populated streets at near the speed of sound in a sleek automobile (or firetruck), careening headlong into anyone and anything in our path.Better yet, Burnout 3: Takedown now adds the lovely feature of a dream made virtual reality: smashing into pieces that no-good idiot who dared to try and tap you into the guardrail. We've all had those fantasies, right? Now you can live em in the comfort (and safety!) of your own living room.

For those of you who are skeptical, one thing should be made clear up front:Burnout 3 is very different from the first two games in the series. You'll still race through beautifully rendered courses at brain-searing speeds, missing traffic by millimeters. But even though B3 now focuses on making your race opponents wreck in the most ghastly ways possible, the intensity and rush is still here...no, it's actually been ratcheted up to a realm of insanity no racer has ever attained. It's different, but still more than worthy of attention.

One thing Burnout vets will appreciate is the single-player mode has been greatly expanded. There are a huge number of race events - close to two hundred, ranging from single races to burning laps to eliminations to crash junctions to....well, it doesn't get old.Add a ridiculous number of unlockables (including fake headlines, signature Takedowns, forty tracks, seventy cars, etc etc) and suffice to say you could finish the first two Burnout games twice each before seeing all B3 has to offer. You still progress by earning medals - only getting golds will unlock everything - but it's no longer just about finishing first.Peforming Takedowns is essential, and well-worth it, as the game lovingly displays the mechanical carnage you create, but it's not always easy. The AI is wicked this time round, and will even gain grudges for you......and go after you.If you do fall victim, you can always choose to enable the Aftertouch, a brilliant feature that allows you to control your wrecked car, and steer it into the path of your opponents.Revenge has never been so sweet.

Screaming down a Hong Kong-ish crowded street, golden Buddha statue looming overhead, desperately trying to keep your lead when two guys in F1-type racers are inches from your rear bumper.....yeah, it's exhilirating all right.

Crash Mode returns in all its destructive glory, but now it's deeper, and larger.Power-ups litter the course - yes power-ups, ranging from temporary boosts to points multipliers.Add the Crashbreaker - in which your car becomes a literal bomb that you can detonate at any time, and we're talking serious mayhem. And oh yes - this mode can be played co-operatively now.One more thing - there's 100 crash junctions now.

The multiplayer madness continues with Road Rage Mode (whoever takes down the most opponents wins), Elimination (whoever's in last place at the end of a lap is disqualified), Burning Lap (boost as fast as you can without crashing once), and normal Single Race, and there's a lot more meat here than before.

The bad?Well, the default soundtrack can leave a lot to be desired (and turn the announcer OFF, trust me), but this is easily fixed by lovely custom soundtrack support.HINT:Causing wrecks to bluegrass is poetry in motion.EA Games - who now owns Criterion - has plastered advertising signboards all over the courses, and they're kind of distracting in an annoying way. There are also many minor details (you race in car classes now rather than picking any you want, the scoring system is different, no nighttime races or weather changes, no licensed cars (like any respected auto manufacturer would let their lovingly crafted creations get dismantled like this!), Crash Mode repeats junctions) that one could complain about, but the core gameplay is so sublime, well-done, and addictive, it's silly to dock the score for any of them.

Burnout 3 is the epitome of what arcade racing should be: easy to pick up, hard to master, appealing to everyone, unimaginably intense, and unbelievably fun.Mark my words, you're gonna see Burnout 3 on a lot of Best Games of 2004 lists -- it'll be on mine, without a doubt.

Thanks for proving me wrong, Criterion. But I need to ask - what's next? You can't possibly top Takedown....can you?

My son is a sport and racing video game fan. He had never heard of Flatout but I talked him into spending his money on it (instead of something with a low Amazon rating) because of the positive reviews here. Just the other day he told me "Wow mom, you were right about this game."

He likes the fact that there are derby's, stunts, grand prix, and races all in a single game. He likes how you can wreck other people and race three different cars. He just thinks it is a great PSP racing game. I think its a great value for such low the price.

F-Zero GX Review

F-Zero GX
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A little background.I love Nintendo games. There I said it.I am an adult gamer, 29 years old, and I feel Nintendo's current reputation of being just for kids is totally undeserved, and in fact is a buch of hogwash started by Sony & Microsoft fanatics.I have an XBox and enjoy playing games on both that system, the GameCube, PC, and my GameBoy Advance. No I don't own a PS2, and never have. That being said, anyone who discounts Nintendo's systems as systems for kids, is really cheating themselves out of option of playing some of the highest quality software on the market.
F-Zero GX is hardcore. This is no joke... if you don't believe me, read other reviews on Amazon, or critics reviews elsewhere. It is the hardest game I have played in the current generation, which in general has seen difficulty decline over the previous generation of consoles. As games have become more mainstream, developers have been making them easier in order to entice people that may have avoided playing games in the past because they thought they were too hard.Nintendo itself is guilty of this."The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" was significanty less difficult than its Nintendo 64 counterparts. So was "Super Mario Sunshine."That being said, with the possible exception of "Metroid Prime,""F-Zero GX" is the purest form of vintage game difficulty available on GameCube.I really think that farming this franchise out to SEGA was the best possible choice. SEGA has a hardcore reputation for building frantic, visually stunning games with higher than average difficulty.Unfortunately for Sega, the hardcore percentage of the market used to be dominant, but as the industry grew, hardcore gamers now make up a relatively small portion of the overall gaming community.
If you like difficult games, or even think you might like to give one a try, "F-Zero GX" is an excellent choice. The graphics are absoulutely stunning all around. The play control is so tight, the player will never question that when a mistake is made, it was her/his fault. You will never blame the game because the control is flawless.Difficulty varies... and gets significantly tougher as gameplay progresses throughout. The game actually encourages lots of practice.Practice will help players increase their skills. The game is very fun and has extremely high replay value.
"F-Zero GX" is a masterpiece collaboration of Nintendo and Sega. This may be going out on a limb, but I enjoyed it more than any GameCube game of 2003, including "Mario Kart: Double Dash" for GameCube and "Burnout 2: Point of Impact Developers Cut" for Xbox, both of which are fabulous racing games too.
Bottom Line:If you like the "F-Zero franchise", racing games, arcade style games that you can play for a few minutes or several hours, or are looking for something a little less "kiddie" than other games for current consoles, look no farther than "F-Zero GX."A harcore gamers dream come true.

Split / Second Review

Average Reviews:

First off, I am by no means a racing game enthusiast, actually it's the complete opposite. Honestly the only racing game I've played and truly enjoyed as of late has been Mario Kart Wii, which is a blast by the way. I've purchased Split/Second after hearing the premise of the game, I thought it sounded really interesting and very unique. Looking back I'm very happy I took a chance on this title, I wasn't let down at all and have been really enjoying it.

Once you play this game and understand what it's trying to do you will come to the conclusion as I have that the "cons" are what makes this game different than most other racing game out there. "Rubber banding" is necessary to play the game as it was intended to be played. Consider this, if you were able to break out in first place and never have to look back it takes away from some of the main points of this game which is to cause destruction and to trigger traps on your opponets. Besides, if you can't pass the car in front of you do the next best thing, which is to drop a plane on him! Also, a lot of people complain about "drifting", which I must agree there is a lot of, however there are many other ways to fill up your power meter like "drafting" which in my opinion is the easier way to play. My final point is in regard to the lack of customization as far as the cars are concerned, again this is not what this game is about so if that is what you're looking for invest in a different title. This game is not about the cars (as strange as that is to say) it's about the havoc you can cause and to what extent you can cause it.

I hope my review has been helpful to you and thanks for reading, sorry for being long winded LOL. If you like to play games for fun, and not take things too seriously look me up, my PSN ID is MikeJMele.

Midnight Club: Los Angeles (Platinum Hits) Review

Midnight Club: Los Angeles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
MCLA:CE is the game to get if you are a fan of racing. Everything bad anyone has said about this game is wrong. The game is perfect. Some complain that it's too difficult. It is extremely challenging, and that's a good thing.

To make it clear, this is absolutely a free-roaming GTA type of experience, with an amazingly rich Los Angeles to explore. The only difference is that you never leave the car and the game is pure racing. When you're not racing, you're driving around looking for races, running from police, or simply cruising, whatever you want to do. Everything else is what you would expect. A massive, beautiful city, day/night cycles, plenty of realistic traffic and pedestrians, miles of freeway, etc. It's as awesome as it sounds.

The car customization is another feature worth noting because it is very deep. You'll spend hours hooking your car up with almost every kind of modification you can think of.

Personally, my only complaint is that you can't customize your character's look. This is a Rockstar game, however, so that was expected. It would have been quite easy to include an option for some other skins, female ones, etc., so everyone can choose the driver that suits them best. The protagonist in this game is just a driver. There's no real storyline.

I own many games for the 360, but if I could only own 2, they would be MCLA:CE and Fallout 3 GOTY. These are games with insane amounts of content, where the acheivement points earn themselves.

The fact that this is the Complete Edition with South Central and the other DLC make it the obvious choice for anyone wondering what game to buy. MCLA:CE is the greatest racing game ever.
