Guitar Hero World Tour Review

I preordered this game from Amazon, but impatience got the better of me, and I bought it from Wal Mart on opening day.My review is based on that band kit, but I will be taking it back today. Why, you ask?

I played this game through two songs (Sweet Home Alabama and The Joker) and realized something wasn't right.I'm normally a 95% player on medium (On Rock Band 2) and a 90% player on hard.Yet I was scoring in the 60's on medium. After checking my calibration settings, I went over into the training mode, and realized that I couldn't even make it through the basic training because the red pad was not registering every time, and was not registering hard hits at all!

I switched over to the song recording mode, and it verified that the red pad was intermittent at best, thus the reason it's going back, and I will hope the one from Amazon is a better copy.

Now, let me say, overall, I give the feel of the drums two very big thumbs up.The pads felt much better, and they were much quieter than I was used to.However they get a thumbs down on quality. And before you think that this is just one bad experience, check around. There is a very big issue, first with the sensitivity of the pads (Apparently a program is coming out to allow you to change the sensitivity using your home PC) and second with the pads working intermittently. This second issue (Which I experienced) seems to be the most concerning, and from other sites, it looks like I am just the tip of the iceberg.I'm reading about people having to go through 2, 3, even 4 drum sets to get a good one. Many of the stores are not sold out, but are returned out.And this apparently stems from the wires to the drum pads simply being held on with silicone which is not holding everything together.

I really really can't wait until they get this set completely fixed, but since Activision is requiring YOU to pay for shipping if it's broken out of the box, might want to delay, at least for now.

Also, since I bought this game based on the promise of cross-compatibility, it should be stated that the drums do NOT work with Rock Band 2 at this point!Hopefully it's just a matter of a patch coming out, but it's a little disconcerting.

*******EDIT 11/10/08*******

As I was still having problems with a cymbal, I did contact the nice support people, who sounded quite exasperated, but immediately sent me out a tuning kit. This kit allows you to modify the sensitivity of each drum pad (Or cymbal, or pedal) to where you want it to be.Too sensitive, it may trigger when you hit another pad.Not sensitive enough, it may not trigger it all.

Now, I previously stated that some sites had talked about loose wires causing problems. In an effort to be thorough, and since my cymbal wasn't working, I did take apart the cymbal to look at the sensor. At least for my cymbal, I noted that the wires were definately SOLDERED.I was relying on information previously supplied by someone else in stating that the wires were not soldered, and I still do not know the condition of the wires on the drum pads themselves. As I said, this was my individual yellow cymbal.Since then I have sent it back through the RMA process, which, yes, did require me to send it (insured and traceable!) at my own expense.

Also, as of this date, the GH:WT drums are still not working with Rock Band 2, which is still a bit frustrating!

Patapon Review

Patapon
Average Reviews:

I enjoyed this a lot. It's a combo rhythm and strategy game. You do missions were you fight by listening to the music and pressing different combos of buttons. Cute characters, bright and original art style are apparent throughout. The pata-pata-pata-pon sound will surely get stuck in your head as well. Some might have trouble at times, it does take pretty good memory along with good rhythm skills but to make this easier to play always use headphones. You can't get the full experience without.

The only negative is no, you can't pause the game. But you can put your PSP in sleep mode and it leaves it as it is.So, if you need to stop playing in the middle it's really no problem.

The game is overall fun, original and worth your time. Especially considering all the game has to offer along with the price, it's well worth the money. You can also try it before you buy at the PSN store. The demo is free to try and if you complete it you even get a bonus weapon.Try this game out, you will not regret it.

Patapon 2 (Downloadable Game Voucher) Review

Patapon 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SHOULD YOU BUY THIS GAME?
If you're into RPG, strategy, or rhythm games, this game is for you. If you don't know what the fuss is about, and are wondering if you should buy this game, I strongly recommend you download the demo. This game can be challenging to the rhythmically-challenged (RC), such as myself. However, playing the demo got me hooked, so i bought the game and haven't put it down in two days. If you are RC, this game may frustrate you, BUT Patapon 2 has implemented two major improvements over the first Patapon that makes P2 more enjoyable for those who can't keep rhythmn. Before i tell you about the improvements, here's some basic info about the game.

BASICS: You control an army of cute one-eyed tribesmen and on each level you try to move them from the left side of the screen to the right in typical 2D side scrolling action. You will be faced with obstacles and enemies. You can attack, defend, and continue moving forward. This is where the rhythm part of the game takes place. To move your army, to attack, or to defend, you have to hit a 4-button sequence to the beat of a drum. The sequences are different for each command, but it isn't difficult to remember. The toughest part is staying on beat, because if you lose beat, a command isn't issued, and your army becomes vulnerable.

WHY PATAPON 2 IS BETTER: This is where Patapon 2 separates itself from the first Patapon. It has an EASY level, so it is more forgiving if you are slightly off in your 4-button sequence. The other features which make P2 better (there are more than just a couple) is you don't have to nail the 4-button sequence 9 times in a row to get to "fever." Fever turns your soldiers into super soldiers (stronger, faster, more resistant to damage). In Patapon 1, if you were slightly off beat, you lose your fever, but in Patapon 2, it gives you a warning (a skull!) to let you know you are off, so you have another chance to straighten yourself out.

WHY 4 STARS? I can't mention all the great things about this game, but i'll address why i couldn't give it a 5. The game is very repetitive. You have to repeat a lot of levels you've already cleared in order to collect "food" "weapons" "materials, etc (the RPG element). There is a lot of trial and error because you don't really know where to get the materials you need to upgrade your soldiers (every soldier is customizable). The evolution tree is nice, but it took a while for me to figure it out. You have to really grind out some levels, having to return over and over to get more materials, plus you have to keep track of the weather(!) because you may get a slightly different level if the weather is sunny, rainy, foggy, or snowy. Some monsters only come out during the "fog" or "snow" and these monsters carry rare items you need.

OVERALL: It's a GREAT game, give the demo a try, it's quite long, and it'll give you a taste of what to expect. PLUS, you get to carry over all your work from the demo to the game so you don't have to repeat those levels! How great is that?

Multiplayer
One of the most exciting new elements of Patapon 2 is its inclusion of multiplayer via a PSP ad-hoc connection. Supporting up to four players, this play option actually consists of two modes containing a link to the single player campaign. During multiplayer action all players assume the role of the Hero Patapon, but are not limited to a single form. Players' Hero Patapons are fully customizable, able to take the shape of any of the Patapon warrior classes, and allowing players to show off their distinct, one-of-a-kind heroes to the world.

Working together, players embark on a series of mission of increasingdifficulty, designed to test their skills as individual warriors as wellas team players. But even the most powerful of Patapon Heroes who ventureinto this online adventure will find that he/she needs something extrato carry the day. In a nod to the Karmen, the tribes' new enemy in Patapon2, here players will ultimately have to don a ceremonial mask to obtainthe strength to survive and succeed. But to secure a mask players willneed to have obtained a certain item during their time spent playing throughthe game's single player campaign. Once produced players will have towork together to transform this item into the mask.

Key Game Features:

Rhythm and Action Collide - Master all 8 drum rhythms including the new jump command, power up command and party command. Combine the various chains of drumbeats to address each unique level, leading the Patapons to victory over the masked Karmens.
Patapon Evolution - Improve your troops fighting and defense skills by leveling up or evolving into other Patapon forms.
Create your own Patapon Hero - Introducing the new Patapon Hero, a prized fighter that you can customize to fit any sort of fighting style desired. Unlock new abilities by mixing weapons and Patapon Hero masks.
Additional Patapons - Discover the new ranks of Patapons: Toripon the flying bird riders; Robopon mech warriors and Mahopon the magicians. Unlock these new warriors to fight alongside all the warriors from the original game.
Multiplayer Mode - Patapon 2 introduces multiplayer gameplay through game sharing.
Three Additional Commands and Miracles - More drumbeat commands allow for different tactics and gameplay action.
Strategic Gaming - Patapon 2 delivers a strong element of strategy by requiring players to properly customize and build up the Patapon army, arm each soldier with particular weapons and armor, and position them correctly for battle.
Mission Variety - Take part in more than 80 specific missions including hunting, escort, and boss battles, and explore numerous vivid environments along the way. Players will discover up to 22 bosses and access hundreds of new items and weapons throughout the adventure.
Unique Art Style - French graphic artist Rolito, noted for his abstract art style seen in collectible toys, animation, and websites, lends his skills to create a variety of unique characters and environments, bringing the Patapon world to life.
Mini-Games - Seven music-based mini-games allow players to earn bonuses and upgrades to further customize the Patapon warriors.
Improved 'Fever Mode' Functionality
Patapon 2 features new and improved 'Fever Mode' functionality. Fever Mode is a state in the game reached when players have successfully completed a certain number of consecutive combos, effectively ratcheting up their Patapons' fighting ability and efficiency in battle for as long as they continue adding successive combos. In the original Patapon, activating and maintaining this mode provided an ever growing rhythmic challenge as the game progressed, but was not necessarily manageable forall players. Patapon 2 eliminates this potential issue by giving players an option to play at an easier level until they get the hang of the game's rhythm, at which point they can switch back to the standard play mode if they wish. Also new with Patapon 2 is 'Fever Alert.' Through this players are kept aware of the agitation level of their Patapons via on-screen alerts, allowing for precious seconds needed to string together the necessary combos to extend Fever Mode when need be.

Rhythm Heaven Review

Rhythm Heaven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As soon as I got this, I realized the potential of having music students enhance their rhythm skills through this game, even before they formally learn particular counting patterns in their music studies. Only, this is a uniquely FUN way of learning!I am literally demonstrating it to the families I teach to present it as something to purchase as an asset to their lessons.Of course the kids love me for that!Who'd a thought they would get a DS game because of their piano teacher?!

If you are a music student or the parent of one that struggles with keeping time or using a metronome, this game will install a solid, internal beat inside every gamer, whether they realize it is happening or not.I have passed many mini-games with my eyes closed while purely tuning into the music and the sound cues that are provided as you progress. The key to winning is in the beat! You cannot be successful at this game without "hearing" the songs assigned to each mini-game or without engaging with the music's rhythm.

The other thing I find myself doing with the taps and flicks is that I am actually "playing" the game as if it were an instrument. The games themselves become part of the music!Every interaction with the game becomes motion creating sound that completes the songs that the games are set to.It is like being a participant in a band, choir, or orchestra. But, because of the literal game you are playing, it is a unique experience.

It can be hilarious as you interact with the characters through the mistakes you make or the successes that allow you to pass each level.I have found myself full-out laughing at some of the antics or creative surprises that are thrown at you along the way.

I own about 50 DS games and this game is definitely in my top five.I recommend it to anyone that loves a challenge, fun, and music. Here's to Rhythm Heaven 2!

PS:If you are a music student who wants this game, feel free to show this review to your parents or other family members.Glad to help out!!:D

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Review

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Guitar Hero 3 (GH3) is the fourth iteration in this series of games despite it being labeled the third, though for most people the 80s edition that was the actual third game was a bit of a footnote since it only came out on PS2 and had very little in it that differed from Guitar Hero 2 other than the songs.

GH3 continues with the same basic formula as the previous games which will keep fans of the series happy, but at the same time adds some welcome new features. One of the best additions is that of online play so that you can now do co-op, face-off, pro face-off and battle mode with a friend over the Live network.

The battle mode is a change up from the normal face-off modes in that instead of gaining star power you acquire attacks from playing certain sequences of notes. Then when you turn the guitar up as if you were going to use star power it instead launches an attack at your opponent. The attacks vary in their nastiness and while I was skeptical of this new aspect of the game it's actually a nice twist for those more competitive players.

Another addition is the co-op career mode, but unfortunately you can't play this mode online which means you'll have to get a friend over with their guitar to experience this mode.

Speaking of the guitar the new wireless Gibson Les Paul style guitar controller is a welcome change from the original 360 GH2 controller.Overall it just feels a lot more solid, especially the whammy bar. Not being wired makes a big difference in terms of convenience. There are GH3 bundles out there with the original GH2 controller in them and I would recommend passing on those in favor of the wireless bundle.

The career mode remains mostly the same as in the previous games. There are now little animated vignettes between each set that don't add much to the overall experience, but certainly are a welcome change from the old bus driving across the country scenes in the previous games. The other addition to career mode is that at the end of certain sets you have to enter battle mode with another guitarist.By now most people know that Tom Morello and Slash are the two real guitarists who you battle against in the game. Both contributed original guitar compositions for their battle sections and can be unlocked as avatars in the game.

The playing experience itself is much the same, though it seems the game is even more forgiving in the timing of when you play notes than even GH2 was and hammer-ons and pull-offs are also very easy to do.For experienced players this will obviously make the game easier in some respects, but at the same time the note structure has been mixed up a bit and the later songs are pretty challenging on Hard and Expert.

While the multiplayer aspect adds a lot more playability to the game at the same time the core of the experience remains the songs and for this game there are even more original songs than before and the song list is pretty great.

Overall GH3 rocks the house in much the same way as the previous games, but with the addition of some new features it doesn't feel like more of the same.Multiplayer adds a new aspect that should give the game a lot more life overall between those times when you get your friends over to the house.

Here is the list of tracks by the original artists (or in the case of Talk Dirty to Me, original vocalist) used in the game. This doesn't include the bonus tracks by the less well known artists.

"Talk Dirty to Me" - Poison (Vocals re-recorded by Bret Michaels)
"Bulls on Parade" - Rage Against the Machine
"When You Were Young" - The Killers
"Miss Murder" - AFI
"Lay Down" - Priestess
"Paint It, Black" - The Rolling Stones
"Anarchy in the U.K." - Sex Pistols (re-recorded)
"Kool Thing" - Sonic Youth
"My Name Is Jonas" - Weezer
"Even Flow" - Pearl Jam
"Same Old Song and Dance" - Aerosmith
"Welcome to the Jungle" - Guns N' Roses
"Cherub Rock" - The Smashing Pumpkins
"The Metal" - Tenacious D
"Before I Forget" - Slipknot
"Stricken" - Disturbed
"3's & 7's" - Queens of the Stone Age
"Knights of Cydonia" - Muse
"Cult of Personality" - Living Colour (re-recorded)
"Raining Blood" - Slayer
"The Number of the Beast" - Iron Maiden
"One" - Metallica

--Co-Op Campaign--

This is what you get when a Tower Defense game is perfected.

Smooth graphics, complimentary sound/music and great gameplay makes this a must own UMD title.

I know this game has been long available on PSN, but it's always been at $20.00.Did not purchase it but have heard from friends it's worth every penny.

Finally decided to bite when the UMD version came out at a bargain price of $10.I would've paid $39.99 (normal price for UMD games) and it'd be worth every penny. From what I've read, I've got 35+ more hours to finish the game, needless to say I will have to play my PSP every chance I get.

We Cheer Review

We Cheer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a game for kids who dream of being a cheerleader or for "old kids" who didn't make the final cut for cheerleader and never got over it.It's one to add to the "Get up off the couch and move" list of Wii games and it's a way to get some very good exercise while having some fun.

I just got this today and have been playing with it for the last couple of hours. That's as long as I could play because by arms and shoulders are ready to fall off! This game really gives your arms a great workout and once I get better at it and can follow along with the foot movements it should be an all around great exercise game.(Walking and chewing gum at the same time can be challenging)There is also a "Work out" section that's has a choice of quick or extended exercise routines which involves a lot of footwork as well as the arms. That, BTW is a good way to practice getting the cheer moves down.

There's a Campaign Mode where you can compete with another person for team captain or Party Mode where you can play with up to 4 people and have your own squad. I probably won't be playing in those modes since most of my friends would think this 50-something woman had totally lost it if I asked them to come join my Wii cheerleading squad. (Why didn't they name the game "Wii Cheer"?

I like the music and the cheerleader characters are all bubbly and enthusiastic (perky?) which is good motivation to get moving. They're also chatty with recommendations and small talk, which you can hit the A&B buttons to skip if it gets old after a while.

I barely made it past failing after a couple of hours and that was on the easy songs. It's fun even when you don't hit every beat.I did improve by doing the routines over and over. I've found that watching the cheerleaders is the best way to stay on the beat.A good sense of rhythm helps. It seems to have enough different songs to keep it interesting and challenging.

I'm glad I bought it.It's big, big fun and anything that keeps me exercising for over 2 hours is a good thing.

Update 10/18/08 - Well it's almost 1:00 in the morning and I've been playing with this game for almost 3 hours after the rest of the household has gone to bed.I've been trying to clear more stages in order to unlock that song in the trailer, "Walking on Sunshine".I finally did it!This game has become a major addiction.

Also, the points scored in this game are based completely on arm movements (although it makes it easier to stick with the rhythm if you move around a little) so if you're hesitating about this game thinking it involves a lot of jumping around, doing back flips or the splits, not to worry. You could pretty much stand in one place and play this game. It's all in the wild flailing (and precision movements) of the arms. That said, you might want to keepyour drapes closed when playing so as not to confirm the suspicions of the neighbors that you are totally out of control.

Update 11/5/08 - If you're having trouble hitting some of the movements when it seems like you're doing everything right, and you're using an HD LCD TV, try going into the options menu and adjusting the timing.I ended up setting it a couple points down and this seemed to make all the difference.I think there might be a slight delay between the music and the display with some TV's and this seems to solve the problem, although I'm not really sure how this works.(Still loving this game!)

Update 11/4/09 - I just got the new We Cheer 2 and it's just as much fun as this one with some nice additional features.
