Persona 2: Eternal Punishment Review

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is the sequel to the currently Japan-only Persona 2: Innocent Sin (and the earlier Revelations: Persona). My biggest gripe with the game is that constant references are made to the world of Innocent Sin -- however, by watching the included trailer and through the events of Eternal Punishment, you'll get a good idea of what happened in the earlier game.
With a somewhat contemporary setting, Eternal Punishment is an oddball in the world of RPGs. That doesn't mean, however, that it's bad! On the contrary, it's a superb game with deep gameplay. In battles, you can kill the demons, like in ordinary RPGs, or you can negotiate with them for money/items/information/tarot cards (the last of which is used to summon more Personae, facets of the user's personality which can be summoned to fight for them).
The characters are interesting and more adult than your typical spiky-haired teen heroes. They range from reporter Maya and policeman Katsuya to computer hacker/wiretapper Baofu and fashion model Ellen (from the first Persona). The innovative rumor system allows you to change the face of Sumaru City by spreading rumors. Want to buy weapons at your local bar? Spread the rumor that they are, and you can get a gun along with your martini.
My only other gripe, and it's small, is with the localization. Some of the text is a little stilted (Ulala's "The goodness of a woman isn't in her bra!" is a prime example). But considering the vast amount of text in this game -- and I mean VAST -- it's a very good localization overall, and in no way hinders your enjoyment of the game.
Atlus has hinted that they may release Innocent Sin if Eternal Punishment does well enough. If it's even half as good as its sequel, RPG fans around the world should rejoice.

Age of Mythology Review

Age of Mythology
Average Reviews:

I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with Age of Mythology.Though it's certainly not revolutionary to the RTS genre (it plays very similarly to Age of Empires I & II), it is an addictive game that's accessible to amateurs but still rewarding to those that master it.What really stands out about it though, is how polished it is.
Age of Mythology is all about the details. While Age of Empires I & II had very simlar looking units for their many "races", this game really gives the varying units a different look. There are only so many ways you can depict a 0.5 inch spearman on screen, but the developers have nevertheless defined each unit visually. It gets even more impressive with the plethora of colorful myth units.Who knew that a manticore and a chimera would look so very, very different?
Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that at least the Greeks actually speak their ancient language (though the single player mode understandably narrates the story in English).Take it from the classics major (I even verified the phrases I didn't know in my lexicon.....yeah....I'm a loser), Ensemble Studios did their homework. We're not talking Thucydides; the statements are really simple phrases basically translating to "that is my purpose" and "especially" and "yes".I have no idea how accurate the Egyptian or Norse game language is, but I have to imagine that they did their best to base them off their ancient languages.
On top of being polished, Age of Mythology is a lot of fun.For fans of the Age of Empires games, you'll be pleased toknow you'll still be having a blast with powerful siege weapons and legions of infantry, archers and cavalry. The addition of myth and hero units and of course the wonderful "god powers" does wonders for the gameplay. The old and the new are boiled down into one familiar, intuitive interface.
My largest complaint about Age of Mythology is that the variety between the races.I was nurtured by Starcraft in the beginning of my RTS days, so I have long been accustomed to different "races" holding different advantages.Though there are certainly variety in the "races" strengths as well as units' abilities and look, they are pretty similar (i.e. Greeks have more types of archer units, Norse have the best melee fighters, Egyptians build stronger walls, but all races have archers, melee fighters and as walls). This does tend to force players to strategize more, but I would have liked to see more variety.
Overall, this is a really good game that is really detailed and just a hoot to play.If you're considering getting Age of Empires I or II, waste not your money and get this one instead.

Titan Quest Immortal Throne Expansion Pack Review

I am a huge fan of Titan Quest and THQ, the company that makes it.I love the expansion, and I say that having not even played in the new location yet! They added to the game so many cool new features. This game already had huge replayability, and now it is even more so.Awesome enhancements include:

- New "Dream" specialty - it's great, I'm using it
- More inventory space...you can now collect sets of items and suit up for different battles
- You can share items between your characters - this adds HUGELY to replayability, as when adventuring as one character, you can pick up an item that your other character can use
- My character now leaves footprints in the snow.Fricking footprints.
- Drops are now way better, much easier to get the specialty items
- You can separate relics from items (it can be expensive though, as it should be)
- You now find "formulae", which is a formula to make a charm that goes in a new inventory slot. You have to find all the ingredients and then pay money to get it made.
- They added commas to your gold total, so you can read it now
- They added a pop up clock so you can see what time it is

I mention those last two enhancements because they show the company really listens and takes the time to put in the little touches. That and I've surprised myself how often I use the clock.

I realize this review sounds like I work for the company.I am just a big fan.I'm sorry to hear the other reviewer had problems with it crashing.I have played the expansion probably 7-10 hours so far, and have only frozen once...the expansion is brand new, though, I'm sure they'll iron out the kinks in an update.I have a Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs ram, and an ATI 1900XTX, and I play at 1280x1024 with everything maxed.

I hope THQ keeps making updates and new releases of this game!

Age of Mythology Review

Age of Mythology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first computer game I ever purchased was the original Age of Empires, way back in 1998.It would be impossible for me to relate in words what a thrill this game was to me.I was completely immersed in it for months, and over the years bought and became equally engrossed with the three follow ups.It is with some reluctance therefore, that Imust comment on this game with less than outright exuberance.
The big difference between this game and its predecessors are the units.Along with the usual archers, cavalry and infantry, you now get god powers, myth units, and heroes. These are quite fun.God powers, for example, include such devastating attacks as earthquakes, lightning storms, and even pounding your opponent with meteors. They can also be benign, however, such as those that provide rain for your farms, or those that heal wounded soldiers. You must be careful when you use them, though, because you can only use them once.
The myth units are also a blast.Unlike other units, they are created at the temple, but basically they are like other units only with lots of attack and hit points. The Greeks have Minotaurs, Cyclops, and Centaurs;the Norse have giants and trolls;the Egyptians have sphinxes and mummies;but there are many, many others, and they are all unique to their civilization. What is really fun is the way they attack their enemy. The Norse frost giant blows a cold wind at his foe, freezing it in place, then bashes it with its club. The hill giant not only swings his club, but every once in a while hauls back his foot and gives his enemy a mighty kick. The Medusa myth unit, as you would expect, turns the enemy into stone, and the graphic is superbly done. The attacked unit's movement grinds slowly to a halt, then freezes in place and turns gray. There are literally a dozen more I could describe, but suffice to say, they are ingeniously done, and a joy to watch.
But for that, though, any A of E fan will be familiar with this. You still have to have villagers collect food, gold and wood. They still build buildings, and you must create and upgrade your units with the available resources.Which is fine.I never minded this aspect of the game--in fact, enjoyed it--and really, it's an integral part of the strategy. You must protect your own supply and a good way to defeat your enemy is to attack his.
My first disappointment with the game is with the 32 scenario campaign.Oh, don't get me wrong, many of them were a lot of fun.But it doesn't have that specialness, that extra intellectual challenge that most of the earlier A of E games provided.I remember actually lying awake nights wracking my mind to find some new way to end an ever increasing string of failures. What a thrill it was to come up with a new angle, try it the next day, and discover that it worked!(And what a thrill--a truly visceral thrill--to maul and smash the enemy after suffering so many disappointments.)
But this doesn't happen here. For one thing, many of the scenarios are very short, some only twenty to thirty minutes. This is far short of the epic length that I crave. And secondly, even the longer ones often end abruptly.A good example would be one of the later scenarios, playing in the Norse aspect. You are told that you will be attacked. You have five minutes to build your town and its defenses, and you have fifteen minutes to defend it from the enemy. This was a blast, with furious, non-stop attacks from several areas. After the fifteen minutes, you are told that you must then find and destroy the enemy.Yes!This will be where it gets good, I thought. So I sent what remained of my battered forces north, simply to scout out the enemy's strength.I fully expected them to be destroyed, and instead concentrated on my area, replacing dead villagers, repairing or rebuilding smashed buildings, etc.Imagine my surprise when, a mere thirty seconds later, I was told that I was victorious!I looked up to where they had gone and sure enough, there was a huge enemy army up there, but apparently, all I had to do was get to it!Man, what a drag. What a disappointment! And there are at least a few like this.
The random map aspect also leaves a lot to be desired. For one thing, there are only two sizes, and the large one is much too small. You can scout out the entire thing in three minutes. And although I've only played it a half-dozen times, I've already begun to notice a depressing similarity in the enemy AI, which can be counted on to attack early, often, with the same units and at the same place. This was not the case in A of E, where from game to game and even within games, strategy and tactics changed and you could never know what to expect.
Lastly and most disappointing is the game's bugginess.I'm not going to bore you with the details, but I have a big, powerful computer, and I have never had problems with any Microsoft game like I am having with this one.First, I couldn't get the cursor to appear. Then the game would crash, or the screen would go blank. Now, I will say that Microsoft, through the internet, has been very helpful, but who wants to go through all of this?
Look, this is not a bad game.I have enjoyed it.It's just that I have come to expect so much more from this series.I guess I've been spoiled.

Product Description:
From the makers of Age of Empires comes a strategy game where the line between history and mythology has been blurred. In Age of Mythology heroes do battle with monsters of legend, and the gods intervene in the affairs of mortal men.
Age of Mythology players wage war as leaders of a Greek, Norse, or Egyptian civilization with a customized pantheon. Players use human armies and diplomacy, progress through development ages, enhance military and economic performance with improvements, and manage economics through resource gathering and trade. Mythology enters the mix when players call upon the gods to act on their behalf or reinforce their armies with more than 20 mythological creatures such as jackal-headed Egyptian warriors or mighty minotaurs.
Age of Mythology's revolutionary 3-D engine provides the game with gorgeous environments featuring lifelike rolling terrain, beautiful waves and water, realistic sunlight, and lush forests. The units roaming these environments are incredibly detailed, move naturally over the terrain, and come to life through hundreds of fluid animations. Amazing special effects change the look of this beautiful world when the gods get involved: all grows dark as an eclipse takes effect, funnel clouds twist and grow as a tornado sends buildings spinning toward the heavens, and meteors streak in from the heavens to send people and armies flying.
An entertaining tutorial, an intuitive interface, and logical game rules allow anyone to quickly and easily learn to play. Once started, there is a lot to explore: an epic 36 scenario single player campaign, easy-to-use multiplayer gaming online, single player games against the challenging Age of Mythology AI opponents, more than 15 different random map types that help make the game infinitely replayable, nine highly differentiated civilizations, multiple difficulty levels to allow players of any skill level to have an enjoyable game, and a fully functional scenario editor. Age of Mythology offers something for everyone: a fun game for any playing style or skill level.

Have you played Starcraft, Age of Empires, Age of Kings, Rise of Rome, or Star Wars Battlefield?

If you have, you should know what this is like... Create your civilization, decide what units to concentrate on, pick which god to worship, prioritize your defenses and your offensives, thats exactly what this is like.

Differences for AoE, AoK, etc, are that they have converted the game into 3-D, creating stunning effects of biuldings, units, rivers, and forests. Also it has a twist with the gods, so you may worship the gods of your choice, and become different advantags. There are three main cultures, each with different gods and sub-gods. They are Greek, Egyptian, and Norse. Each has unique advantages and dissadvantages, offering many hours of play.

After you are tired of the single-player and campaigns (that is, if you ever do) there is more!!! You can now easily log on to a server with hundreds of other players ready for a fight. And if you win, your rank raises. This lets you easily find the right person to play with.

Okay if you EVER get tired with those, just go to aom.heavengames.com, and over 100 more campaigns, maps, units, recorded games, and mods are ready of your use. Now with all of this can you ever get bored? Every preson will have a different style of play and there are SOOOOOOOOO many styles...

don't get suckered in to buying this game. it was again rushed to the market to capitalize on the popularity of the movie. a typical well playing games takes 18 months to 2 years to make it to the market but with a lot of these rush to market games it is just the basic sequences played with some familiar characters. it took my 9 year old about 5 hours to play through the entire game.

Titan Quest: Gold Edition Review

Sure, this is what Diablo3 would have looked like (had it been released in 2006) - and this cannot be a bad thing!

Quite realistic graphics achieved even on medium range PCs (a 3-year old system I used to have at the office with only its video card upgraded to a 7600GT, can run it easily with everything on HIGH). I particularly liked that you can see the exact armor and weapons on your opponents and, after you killed them. Fighting a hard opponent is rewarding because everything drops for looting.

I am a great fun of AD&D RPGs. However, in Titan Quest (and its expansion) there is no deep background - except lots of excellent Mythology (correctly told for once). Sure, there is no "official 20-sided dice" getting thrown somewhere in the background - but do you really care?
Hack, slash, zap, burn and destroy. Loot, sell, buy and equip. Repeat as needed.

You will surely enjoy it! Great Fun!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
