The Witcher Enhanced Uncensored Edition (UK IMPORT) Review

The Witcher Enhanced Uncensored Edition

This is probably the best single player RPG I've ever played.
First the game play: You are a witcher, a human fighter/mage that has been trained and mutated for the specific purpose of fighting monsters. An opposing mage attacks your castle in the prelude/tutorial and your main mission is to find him and kill him. To achieve this you will travel around the game world and complete a variety of tasks. Some essential to the game play, some optional, some simply opportunities for the witcher to earn money by carrying out his trade: Killing monsters.
There are major differenced with other games, even those using the same bioware engine. There are no choices as far as class, race or alignment. You are a witcher, period. As far as the alignment, as the game box states:
There is no good or evil, only choices.
Many of the choices will have consequences further on in the game that may force you to follow one course or the other. This leads to great replay value. You may try different alternatives or different quests in the next game.
There is a great web forum that is very helpful available in both Polish and English.
About the censorship issue; it's no big deal. There are two versions available, and both can be purchased through Amazon. The North American version has the (little, tasteful) nudity taken out, the European version available through the third party sellers is uncensored. The differences are so minor as to be trivial however if you have the North American version, there is an unofficial "patch" available through the forum that turns it into the uncensored one. Probably not worth the effort.
The graphics are really good, and the game itself is immersive. Plays like a movie.
In the expanded edition there is also a game editor, but I have not tried it.
Can't wait for the sequel.

Grim Fandango Review

Grim Fandango

If you're reading this review, you may be under the impression that I'm trying to oversell it. Perhaps I am. It doesn't matter; this game deserves it. Hands down, I have never seen a more beautiful and challenging game.Every scene is a postcard. The music is so perfect you think they chose theplaylist first and worked the game aronud it. It made me laugh, though thehumor is wry and subtle and may be hard to appreciate. It made my eyeswater, though there's no heavy-handed sentimentality. You'll fall in lovewith the characters, whose voices are perfect. When something goes wrong inthe story, you'll feel genuine delight or devastating depression, dependingon the situation. Lucasarts could easily have made a movie based on theinteresting characters and elaborate cutscenes alone. (And, for my money, Ihope they do...)
The game is not perfect, but in an industry fixated onviolent first-person shooters and manufactured WarCraft clones, GrimFandango is a welcome breath of fresh air. They say the adventure game isdead; this is proof to the opposite. It is a disappointment that the gamesold poorly, because it's just this kind of game that makes me glad I own acomputer.

War Front: Turning Point Review

War Front: Turning Point
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a RTS that is fun to play and is guaranteed to get your adrenalin pumping once you get into the action. It has 3 different difficulty settings, (easy, normal and hard) and it is playable as a single person or as a multiplayer; this review is of the single player game.

The game setting is the European/Eastern Asia theater during World War 2; however the game throws in a few "what if" scenarios and a few futuristic weapons to make the game a little different that your normal WW2 game.

As with any game there are positives and negatives...let me explain

The Pros:

1.)Non linear game play; although you must complete certain objectives to complete a mission, how and in what order you do it is completely up to you. You can also play the game from either the American or German point of view (with completely different scenarios). This gives the game alarge degree of replayability

2.)Your three main "heroes" ofthis game have upgradeable skills, giving them special talents to help you in certain situations. Some of these skill are passive (in effect all the time) and some are active (only begin when you click on an icon and only last a specific period of time)

3.)Some buildings, and airports have upgrades available once specific conditions have be achieved.

4.)Easy save game at any point. (recommended to do it often)

5.)Grouping of infantry and vehicles to allow you to facilitate deployment of your troops.

6.)Production buildings and airports can be set up to continually produce the same group of units that you've instructed; this allows you to continue to make tanks, infantry and airplanes while you "try" to concentrate on running the war effort.(not as easy as you'd think)

7.)Some "hot keys" are available to facilitate commands to certain units.

8.)You have some limited amount of time to set up your forces when the mission starts, thenit is intense, nonstop action from there to the end of a mission.

9.)Use of the "pause" button to stop all the action; however, you can still look anywhere on the map to assess what needs your most urgent attention.

The Cons:

1.)Initially, you can easily feel overwhelmed and become frustrated with this game;trying to complete mission objectives while being continually attacked on several different fronts at the same time. The action at times is so hectic it borders on chaotic; it's just hard to know which major problem to try to fix first.

2.)The instructional manual, although complete, is very basic and simplistic to say the least, when compared to the scope of activity you are going to have to deal with in the missions.

3.)The tutorial covers only very basic strategies, or so it would seem, (see "suggestions" below) in its instruction, and hardly prepares you for what's to come. Learning how to use the tutorial to its full potential will help immensely.

4.)I could not get the game to install initially; after an hour of fiddling, I eventually went to the web site to the FAQ (frequently asked questions) section only to discover that the game may not install with an active firewall; once I'd disabled my firewall, it installed without any problem. I just can't understand why a potential problem such as this would not be mentioned in the instruction booklet.

Suggestions:

1.The tutorial is deeper and more useful than it initially appears. On the section on fighting, you should take your time to learn how to use your buildings to produce infantry and vehicles that have the same group number (for example you might have a combination of 20 infantry and tanks in group No.1 and a group of 6 fighter planes and bombers in group 2, etc.) This will allow you to send an entire group (instead of individual units) off to battle withone or two mouse clicks.

2.In the tutorial on turrets and airfields, there is another group of enemies that are not in obvious view on the map; if you look for them with a plane you'll find them, then you'll have a real battle to practice on the tutorial session. Of all the help available on learning how to play this game, this was the most useful.

3."loop" you building units to continually produce infantry, airplanes and tanks. You will not have time to do this once the action starts.

4.)use the "pause" button to get time to think (when all is chaos around you). Although you can't make any changes during "pause" you can use the time to determine what needs to be done first once you "unpause" the game.

A great game, with a huge and somewhat difficult learning curve; however once you've mastered the basic game controls it's a real blast.5 Stars.R. Nicholson

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne Review

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Max Payne exploded onto the scene in 2001 with innovative gameplay using the 'Bullet-time' special effect that made 1999's hit 'The Matrix' so amazing.Incorporating that effect strategically into gameplay was unquestionably difficult, but it was done so well that Max Payne became an instant classic with its noir, indie-movie style story told through 'Graphic Novel' interface, which is basically comic book inspired images with real actors and some great voice-overs.Max Payne 2 retains all those features and more in this new and excellent installment.
Gone is Max Payne's infamous 'scrunchie face' or 'constipation face' from the original. He also talks in metaphors alot less than he used to.All characters have been completely redesigned and are more life-like than ever, with fully animated facial features. The new AI system allows some people to fight along side you, which can really help in a jam.Since the AI is good, you won't find yourself on the receiving end of your computer allies' gunfire too often. As you progress, the enemy AI adapts to your tactics, which keeps you on your toes.
Bullet-Time is better than ever, and the death scenes in this game never cease to entertain. Many people complain to no end about the 'ragdoll physics' on the bodies, which basically means that the deadbodies flail into extreme positions, like a ragdoll stunt double would in a movie. While these physics can be a bit silly (and at times glitchy), I personally think they make for some very entertaining death scenes. At some points, when you defeat a crucial enemy or the last enemy in the area, the camera will pan around in slow-motion and show you the death.Since the ragdoll physics apply to many other objects, watching your dead enemies fall into a pile of 2x4's, sending them flying all over the place, is very entertaining.
The story in this game is just as good, if not better than the first game. The new, haunting soundtrack is also excellent and sets the mood of the game perfectly.Voice-acting even seems to be vastly improved over the first game, even though the first game had great voice acting to begin with. The characters all have their own distinct personalities, and the game was just a blast to play.
The game isn't short, but you could probably rip through it in about 8-12 hours of actual gameplay.Alternate gameplay modes open up when you beat the game, adding replay value.Overall, Max Payne 2 is an excellent game that is well worth the money. The action-packed and dramatic gameplay sequences, great story-telling and music will keep you glued to your screen until the very end.Definitely a sequel that lives up to and even surpasses the original.
