The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages Review

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages

I've been a Zelda fan for the past 13 or 14 years. This game (along with it's counterpart Oracle of Seasons) makes for a very good old school feel of gameplay.I fell in love with it and I've yet to beat it (due to lack of knowledge of ...), but I have a very enjoyable time playing the game. Most of the dungons remind me of the good 'ole days where Keese flew around freely, Likelike's took your shield, Octorock's throwing rocks, Moblin's shooting you with arrows, dragons spiting fireballs, Dodongo's eating bombs, multiheaded drangons flying around trying to kill you.And the music grabs you once again. The land of Hyrule is under attack.Old school gameplay, incredible music, familiar characters and enemies...it dosn't get any better than this.Buy it, I know I will!

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Review

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker...It was in development for 3 long years and it basically maxes out Gamecube's hardware capabilities (cel-shading is an extremely difficult effect for processors/graphic engines to handle).
AWARDS + REVIEWS
Zelda: The Wind Waker came out in Japan in December and is considered one of the greatest games of all time there. Famitsu magazine in Japan (the most reliable gaming magazine in the world..and every game is reviewed by 4 different critics) gave Zelda: The Wind Waker a perfect 40/40. Only three other games have ever gotten a score that high (Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Vagrant Story, and Soul Calibur). Famitsu says "Any pangs of anxiety you may have with the cartoon-shading look will instantly vanish once you play the game." Two of the reviewers actually said the game was so good that they cried in delight. In fact, Zelda has recieved only one non-perfect review in Japan and that was by Dengeki magazine (it got a 9.5/10) ..and Dengeki scores games so harshly that Zelda: The Wind Waker became the first game in over 3 months to get above an 8/10. In the US, PlanetGamecube imported the Japanese version and gave it a 10/10. Zelda: The Wind Waker also won Best Console Game of E3 (Gamespot and the Official Awards).
THE "NEW" ZELDA
The main difference between this Zelda and past Zelda's is that Miyamoto is no longer designing/directing it, and thus, the new director is giving it a much more epic feel. Everyone who has played the Japanese version has said that it definatly has the deepest story out of any of the Zelda's ever made - in fact, it is the first Zelda to have a true emphasis on plotline. Not only this, but this is also the first Zelda to have multiple continents and islands that you can sail to with a ship. The world is so huge that on a quick ship it can take as much as 15 minutes to sail from one location to the other (in Final Fantasy for comparison sailing from one end of the world to the other only takes about 2 minutes).
LENGTH
PlanetGamecube themselves gave the game a 10/10 and said the only problem the game had was that the world was TOO huge. This game will take you 40 hours to complete (if you are very fast and direct) but is filled with well over 100 hours of sidequests and other things to do. In fact, this game is probably packed with more sidequests than any game ever made.
CEL SHADING
Anyone who shys away from this game because of the graphics are definatly missing out. Those graphics are actually more difficult for a console to render and more difficult for developers to make than the great polygonal graphics we are all used to. Not only this, but I, having witnessed the game myself at a Nintendo Cube Club, have noticed that up close this game is beautiful. Do not be fooled by screenshots, they do not do the game justice. The animation in this game is amazing and at the Cube Club (a club containing over 20 gamecube games), Zelda definatly stood out as the one with the most impressive and flawless art design and graphics.
GAMEPLAY
The gameplay itself is very similar to Zelda: Ocarina of Time although with many enhancements and improvisations. Plenty of fighting, exploring, and puzzle solving. This time, however, the gimmick is wind rather than time (in Ocarina of times case). Wind is constantly blowing at a specific velocity and direction at any moment in the game. It effects everything - from how your boat sails and in what direction to which way Link's cap swings in the air. Many puzzles will also use the wind and there are items to manipulate it.
MUSIC
And then there is the music..the music of the new Zelda definatly makes one of the greatest gaming soundtracks in history. Classical Zelda tunes remade in orchestral glory and plenty of new songs as well. The music is completly orchestrated and if you have a surround sound setup..drools.
IMMERSIVE WORLD - ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Perhaps the number 1 thing that people who have played the new Zelda comment on is that it is perhaps the most immersive game ever made. Link has about 20 facial expressions which all convey what he is feeling at any given time. All characters in towns have artificial intelligence (they dont just stand there or run around in circles like in most Zelda/RPG's)..rather..they have minds of their owns. If you (Link) walk around town with a sword..some little kids will follow you. If you go into a house and break pots the owner will get angry and chase after you. If you do something silly in front of people, they will laugh at you. And if you draw attention, people will look at you. Even the enemies have AI that makes the world immersive. Take out a bomb in front of a Moblin and they will run away - it makes you feel like the world is real. Seagulls follow your boat as it travels betweens islands. Zelda: The Wind Waker is the definative reason to own a Gamecube.

The Legend of Zelda Review

The Legend of Zelda
Average Reviews:

The Legend Of Zelda is an important milestone in video game history. It was the first of it's kind--it combined action/adventure with puzzles and some role-playing elements.Even nowadays, there STILL aren't too manygames like this.I recently purchased this game and I must say that unlike many old video games who have lost their luster over the years, the Legend Of Zelda is still just as fun to me as it was when I was a kid. What else is there to say about this classic game?If you own an original NES, you MUST have this one!
A word of warning:If you're buying a used copy, I suggest getting a gray-colored one instead of a gold one.Yes, the gold ones look cooler and are the classic issue of the game, but they're so old that the internal memory (which stores your quest data) may be worn out.Get a gray copy just to be on the safe side.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Review

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Legend of Zelda has had many memorable titles. Link to the Past has to be the favorite of the 2D games. This was the game that gave the ideals for the altime best: Ocarina of Time. This game consist of 2 worlds. A light and dark world. You link are in search to rescue the desandant of the 7 sages from the evil wizard Anghim (i think's his name) from the dark world and into the light world..
If you played Links Awakaning, and Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Season you'll love this game. The graphics are superb for a portable gaming system. It'll rain and fog and its like in real life. it is so much fun! There are so many items to collect. Such as a bug-catching net to capture faires in bottels for life refil when you die. The story line is very in-depth and the fighting is envigorating. The sound are gorgous as well. Songs such as the ones in Ocirana of time are featured in this game.
Multi-player for the zelda series is a first. Up to 4 people can link up to do tasts. YOu all have to work together. Its so much fun to play. You'll do things such as through your friend over a gorge to flip a switch. Real team effort. The one (or team) to collect the most rupees wins! THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR THE GBA!!!

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Review

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a review written by someone who has played both versions. In this review I'll not only touch on the aspects of Twilight Princess, but also tell you a few differences between the Wii and Gamecube versions, because some will most definitely be curious.

The Legend of Zelda is one of the most popular games of all time. When a new Zelda game marches forth, the fans are always there. Now, after spending years in development, with delay after delay and ultimately being pushed onto the Nintendo Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is finally here. It's pretty generous of Nintendo to keep the game on the Gamecube as well as pushing it to the Wii.It's great that even those without the Wii can experience this amazing game.

Twilight Princess is by far one of the most instantly absorbing in the series. The game begins with you as Link in the village of Ordan. Things are going well for Link and his friends until a band of monsters riding a boar come and kidnap two of his friends. When Link awakens, he's suddenly thrust into a twilight realm where he meets a creature named Midna, who decides to aid Link on his quest. From the get go, The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess is instantly absorbing. The storyline is by far one of the best in the series and is very engrossing and absorbing.

The first major difference between the Gamecube and Wii versions are the controls. On the Wii you swing the remote and Link swings his sword. Here, it's just the press of a button. For anyone who played the Wii version, it's surprising how much time it takes to get used to the control scheme. When using the slingshot or hero's bow, aiming also feels strange. It's far easier on the Wii.The controls for the Gamecube version are good, though. It's just that if you played the Wii version you have to adjust to it.However, it actually is an entirely different experienece all together. This doesn't mean if you have the Wii version you should go out and buy the Gamecube version. They are, after all, the same game.

The heart of the challenge from the game mainly comes from the puzzles rather than the actual dungeon crawl itself. Most enemies are easily taken down by a couple of sword swings. Some of the puzzles, however, can really throw you for a loop. This also brings about another key difference between the Wii and Gamecube versions. The environments are completely mirrored. In other words, Link holds his sword in his left hand instead of his right.A path that was on the left in the Wii version will be on the right in the Gamecube version.Anyone who played the Wii version first will no doubt find this to be rather confusing. However, most of you are probably getting the Gamecube version because you don't have a Wii.So this is really no problem at all.

A unique twist to the gameplay of Zelda is that Link not only goes around in his normal form, but can become a wolf as well. As a wolf the controls are virtually the same with the exception of Link being able to use senses and dig. You'll also be forced to solve puzzles in wolf form as well, and it does indeed add some variety to the game. As you progress in wolf form, Midna sits on your back and is there to offer advice for you. Gameplay wise, Twilight Princess knows how to keep you immersed in the game.

Visually a Gamecube game has never looked better than this. It's fairly lifelike. It also looks very identical to the Wii version. However, the Gamecube version doesn't play out in widescreen so there's letterboxes whenever you view one of the cutscenes. The game sports some amazing detail, though.Link has never looked better. The land of Hyrule has never looked better. Your enemies and some of the cinematics also sport some awesome detail.

The music still sounds pretty good. A lot of tunes you'll recognize from previous Zelda adventures, but the new stuff sounds pretty good too. There's no voice acting, though, and that still bothers me about Zelda to this day. The Windwaker could've used voice acting and so could Twilight Princess. The story is so absorbing, and it probably would've been better had they added voices to it. Link grunts and such and from time to time one of the NPC characters might yell something, but there's really no spoken dialogue throughout the game. It would've been really exciting to see some of the cinematics brought to life through fantastic voice acting. In the long run this probably won't bother anyone, and its a small price to pay for a game that's as fantastic as this.

For what its worth, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is very good. Its by far the most absorbing story in the entire series, and its gameplay is unmatched. Fans who have followed Zelda since its days on the NES will be pleased at just how far the series has come with Twilight Princess. Its one of the best in the series.

On a final note, the Wii version is superior to the Gamecube version. While they are virtually the same game, the controls of the Wii version are better, and some of the environments look smoother. The control scheme and mirroring of the environments alone makes playing both versions a different experience. However, if you own the Wii version, this different experience isn't so different as to warrant the Gamecube version a buy.The reverse is also true.If you invest in the Gamecube version, it's hard to say, "Get the Wii version too."

Whichever version you get, however, you'll be satisfied either way.

The Good

+Absorbing story
+Fantastic Gameplay
+There's a lot of great detail given to the game
+The puzzles are quite challenging
+The game still sounds good

The Bad

-All this time and the series still lacks voice acting
