Golf Launchpad for Pc/mac Review

Golf Launchpad for Pc/mac
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review is for the Golf Launchpad for the PC computer with Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 2006.Set up is a snap. Takes a few minutes (5 to 10) to connect the net, and insert the ball unit; after that, just use the included USB cord and connect to your laptop or desktop PC.For me I attached it to my Dell XPS M140 Laptop.Next you load the 3-disk software PC version of Tiger Woods PGA 2006 onto the PC - this took about 30 minutes and you need the "course" disk inserted in the computer to play the game.Once everything is loaded you can launch the game, which took about 2 to 3 minutes to load - might be faster on a newer/faster PC.You can start from scratch (create a player) or choose from a list of players including Tiger Woods (default). All you need to supply is your own golf clubs.

By default your player always starts on the middle of the TEE, but you can move the player (left or right, backward or slightly forward) or turn their body slightly using the left or right arrow keys on the keyboard. There are drop down menus to choose what type of swing (full, extra spin, pitch, bump & run etc.), as well as a golf bag with full set of "virtual" clubs that are calibrated for each player on the list. There are about 15 different players to choose from. For Tiger, using the virtual 9-iron is equivalent to 149 yards; the virtual driver is 311 yards, lob wedge 91 yards etc.Distance to the hole, lie, and overview diagram of the hole are also on the screen.

As i've mentioned in the Title, this is not exactly golf, while you can choose the specific virtual club from the bag, the distances are already pre-calibrated; thus all you do is choose your virtual club, then swing (any real club) that your room (space)allows, over the launchpad base unit that has several "sensors" on it.Based on what the sensor picks up from your swing, the golf ball on the computer screen will go close to that particular distance and direction. At the end of each shot, there will be a meter telling you what percentage strength you hit the ball with, a bunch of other information, such as slight draw, hit inside out, etc.

For example, swinging Tiger's virtual driver (calibrated at 311 yards) at 85% strength, means your "golf ball" will travel approximately 264 yards.I can achieve this distance whether i'm using my own real driver or a real pitching wedge - as long as the computer senses a "swing" over the base unit sensors, it will calculate the speed of that swing and will determine the "strength" of the hit. You can even swing your open palm across the sensors, and the computer will register that as a "hit".One good feature is that you don't have to hit the ball mechanism connected to the launchpad, just glide your club over the sensors, and it will register the "hit".

Chip shots, putting are all "hit" similarly.

Likes:
-Graphics are beautiful
-Great overview of golf courses i may never get a chance to play in real life.
-swinging a real club instead of using a joystick or using the mouse.
Cons:
-responsiveness of software ok.Ocassionally your swing does not register on the computer and you need to reposition the player before you can re-swing.
-You might "ruin" your true golf swing - since you don't get a real feel for the flight of the golf ball, or spin off the face of your club, you might simply swing harder just to get the strength meter to register higher i.e. to 100% - so the true "feel" of the game is missing.
-Putting is all computerized - again no true "feel" of putting the ball, wedge shots, reading the green, etc.

Summary: The Golf Launchpad is a great input device specifically designed for golf games and works with the included EA Sports TW Tour 2006 (i have not tried other golf titles) It's better than using a computer joystick or mouse, which is the main purpose of the unit. However, don't expect to improve your real golf game using this device; with each hit, especially in Novice mode, it registers as a near perfect hit; getting pars and birdies were relatively easy, but you also miss very "makable" putts, as well as make fantastic chip shots from 25 yards out, which causes me to think it's a programming software issue, and not from improved "golf skills".

Nevertheless, for a friendly game with family and friends at courses you may never get a chance to play on, this is a neat way to "experience" it. To improve your golf skills, nothing beats hitting a bucket of balls at the range and putting on the greens with the proper instructions/instructor.

Note: Children should be supervised when using this device. Be mindful, you're still swinging a real golf club that can cause bodily/property damage.

Sid Meier's SimGolf Review

Sid Meier's SimGolf
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Links and other golf-realism fans look elsewhere. This is not about accurate golf. It's a money management and resource gathering sim along the lines of Theme Park or Sim-Coaster.Those expecting this to be as involved or detailed as Meier's Civilization or Alpha Centauri games will also be disappointed. It's not necessarily challenging, but still fun to play.
Like most games of this type, you start out with a blank piece of land and a small sum of money and your job is to build up your course hole by hole until you raise enough money to err... go on to another blank piece of land.Detail is sacrificed for simplicity in this game. You can raise/lower terrain, add fairway, green and various traps rather intuitively but you can't make the sandtrap the exact shape you are looking for.You can win awards for a number of different achievements such as completing dog-leg holes or hitting the 9 and 18 hole marks. As your course becomes popular and the money starts pouring in, you can also sell prime real estate which celebrities such as "Curtis Weird" will move into.
Once you get a hole or two built, you can open your course to the familiar Sims who travel the course, speaking their gibberish, and showing their enthusiasm (or disgust) at your creation.A well designed course is also necessary to impress the city officials who, after a pleasing round of golf, will allow you to buy additional parcels of land to expand your course. If your course is particularly well designed, a pair of sims will start an elaborate story you can follow along with as they play.A pair may fall in love, start a business together, or whatever. If the story reaches a conclusion, a bonus item (usually some kind of course decoration) will drop from the sky and on to the course. It's interesting to follow, but after about four or five stories, they'll start to repeat themselves.
A weaker aspect of the game is the tournaments you play against fellow sims to build up your skills such as putting, driving, etc... It's *very* basic. You may make a mouse click or two on the initial drive, but the computer takes over from there right down to the final putt. You might as well be rolling dice.I wonder why it was ever incorporated into the game.
It's a very easy game, so if you're looking for a challenge straight out of the box, skip the normal level and go straight to difficult. There's also a nice feature that allows you to import your face in the game; the readme.txt file details how to do it.It's tricky, but you can import three different faces (happy, normal, mad) using a program that edits .bmp files (such as Paint Shop or Microsoft's Photo Editor). Then your face will appear in the giant photo of yourself as you pull up your character's statistics (I was hoping my mug would appear in the game itself, but alas...)
I killed an entire evening playing this game right out of the box. It sucks you in very quickly with its simplicity. However I don't find myself coming back to it that much the way I did playing The Sims.Perhaps it's because it's easy or maybe it's just because I'm sure I've probably seen everything already. So the next chunk of land is a wooded area instead of a tropical beach. What's the use of continuing if you're just going to create another course and listen to the same jabbering sims over and over again?
Still, if you ever wished you create your own Pebble Beach or Mauna Kea resort, this game delivers.

I'm retired from cancer.I'm mainly home bound and PGA Championship Golf has without a doubt provided me with more hours of entertainment and challanges that when a friend of mine had to retire as well I bought the game for him and now nearly our every conversation is about this golf game.We pick a course and see which one of us can manage to get par for the 18 holes first. As far as realistic, I can't think of anyway Seirra could improve it.But if they do, Henry and I will be first in line to purchase it.Now with 12 new holes I just see more time spent trying to tame the new courses. The golfer and his animation it a hoot and the announcer, well sometimes you wish you could throw your golf club at him.Anyone who wants to be a golf pro without all the walking, this is the game, thanks Seirra for not the hours but days of entertainment from 2 disabled Vets. Hot Shots Golf 3 Review

Hot Shots Golf 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's get one thing straight: I've never given two shakes about golf, either in real-life or video game form.I'd never played a golf game until Hot Shots Golf 3.This review will show my lack of knowledge about the sport, and will contain no comparisons to Swing Away Golf, Tiger Woods 2002, Tee Off Golf, or even the first two Hot Shots games, because I've never spent one second playing any of them.In fact, being Golf Ignoramus #1, I may seem like the least qualified person in the universe to review this game.
However, HSG3 is not a golf game just for golf-heads.It is fun, pure and simple - in fact, it's the most fun I've had with a game since Samba de Amigo and Virtua Tennis on the Dreamcast.HSG3 is one of only two games I've ever pre-ordered; even now I'm really perplexed about what attracted me to it.I was positive the game would be a winner.
Lucky for me, I was right.HSG3 makes golf fun and easy to play, yet contains enough depth to keep it from being silly. It's a fantastic multiplayer game as well - my similarly golf-ignorant friends got involved immediately. We now consider it a multiplayer classic.
First off, the game is gorgeous to look at.The characters have goofy, oversized heads, and behave in bizarre, endearing ways. They'll do backflips when you get a birdy, and will even line-dance with some frogs. The game is full of visual whimsy: a rainbow trail follows the ball on an accurate stroke, your caddy kicks up a puff of dust as he takes off after the ball, and the golf ball will even burst into flames on certain occasions. The true stars of the game are the courses: lush, detail-filled marvels that are just magnificent.I was actually disappointed my character couldn't hop in the golf cart and take a leisurely tour of the course, drinking in the grassy, rolling hills, the swaying trees, butterflies, falling leaves, rippling pools, and the glorious sunset. You might see a windmill turning lazily in the distance, or a train chugging along a winding track. You'll hear buzzing insects, soft gusts of wind...and your caddie's grating comments when you launch one into the rough. The courses vary from a tropical island to a desert canyon, and each has its own treasures and obstacles. You can play each course in any season, at different times of day, or with different weather conditions. Not only does each detail provide an additional feast for the eyes, but each affects the gameplay directly.
Ah, the gameplay.HSG3 uses a three-click and meter system to measure your swing:hit the button once to start the meter, again to measure power, and once more for timing. You can also used the d-pad to target your swing for slice purposes. It's ridiculously easy to do, but can get very complex, as you'll have to pay attention to the slope of the course, the wind condition, which club would be best, and of course you'll have to avoid sand traps and water.Putting is also easy: a grid appears over the green showing slope and speed, and you tap the button once to start the meter and again to measure power.A randomly placed pin practically guarantees you won't play the same hole twice."Easy to get into, difficult to master" is a gaming cliche, but it fits HSG3 perfectly.
There are several single-player modes to choose from, including Practice, Stroke, Tournament, and Vs.You accumulate Hot Shots Points in these modes, which can then be used in the Shop to buy items ranging from new clubs and balls to caddies.Trust me - you'll revisit the courses many times in order to rack up additional points. You play against the CPU in Vs. mode, and if you win, you unlock additional characters with improved performance stats. There's also an interesting internet mode, which ranks your best games against players nationwide.
Multiplayer is a joy.One of the best features is that you can use one controller for up to four people - no multitap needed! You can play one hole or compare your scores over a series.Fiendishly addictive, and it can get pretty competitive!!
Hot Shots is golf for the anti-golfer.Despite having a total lack of interest in the sport, I got into the game right away.It takes the somewhat slow-paced and dry game of golf and makes it appealing and fun.HSG3 is a game you and your friends will replay many times, whether to improve your scores, purchase all the items, bask in the beauty of the courses, or to have a simple good time.Ignore the golf-ish exterior and give it a chance.I think you'll get hooked, unless you're dead-set against having fun.

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee Review

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm normally not a big sports game fan. But Hot Shots is so much fun with its customizeable characters and challenge modes that our entire family is now addicted to the game.

First, the basics. You have a cartoon-style character that moves from hole to hole on a golf course, with the traditional line up, swing and putt golfing moves. When you win, you earn character customizations, new players, new courses, and more. You can then change your character's hairstyle, outfit, clubs, balls, and even accessories. Many items give you bonusses and penalties. As you develop a playing style, you might work on gaining items that give you control, for example, at the expense of power.

Maybe you've done this sort of game before on a console - but you haven't seen this on a handheld! The graphics are simply gorgeous. Each course has its own look and feel, from Japanese pagodas to misty mountains. The detail of the trees and surroundings is incredible.

You might worry that the fine movements are hard to master - but actually they do a really good job with this and it becomes quite intuitive to power the main drive and to gently tap the ball into the hole.

There are little quirks with the game. In most golf games, if you are too quick on hitting the ball, you "hook" (the ball curves left) and if you're too late, you "slice" (the ball curves right). But in this game, it seems that when you miss a perfect impact, it's sort of random exactly what the ball does.

There are a few graphic issues. If you hit your ball into a tree (by accident of course), you can see that the ball hits the tree. When you move in close to do your next shot, it appears that the tree has vanished. But when you swing, POOF the tree appears again to block you :)

Luckily for you, the computer opponents have the same issues. Sometimes a computer character will hit into a tree and feel stuck - so they hit back and forth in the woods until they give up (after 9 shots).

But these are really pretty minor issues that rarely come up. Like I said, we don't normally play a lot of sports games - but this one is really rather addictive. I wish you earned new courses more quickly, but the lure of getting them gets you to perfect the courses you have available and to build up your score. You're always earning more items, more bonusses, so even your small victories still give you a reward. The little cut-scenes are cute and add personality to the game.

Highly recommended!

4.5/5

Hot Shots Golf2 Review

I got this game because I wanted a game to play with my friends who don't play video games as much as I do.The learning curve is pretty good and it can take less than a round to get a good grip on the game, but much longer to master it.As you play against different opponents and beat them you are then able to play as them.Going through the tournament season opens up courses and doing well gives some cool prizes.
Controls are simple, but you can do a lot with them.Spin and terrain play a large role in this game and really add a lot.Still, the best thing about this game is that it doesn't take long to get the hang of, so novices can pick it up pretty quickly. Also, because of its cartoonish look, it's a blast when everyone is drunk!
Single player of multi, this game is a lot of fun.

Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds Review

Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After playing all the Hot Shot Golf games on the Playstation 2 and being very pleased with all of them, I am again impressed with the new Out of Bounds version for the Playstation 3.Beginning with a look at graphics, I don't know if I would label them true 'next generation' in appearance but they are very nice to look at.Whether it is reflections off of water or vegetation or clothes on the players and caddies, it is well done in my opinion. As far as seamless game play, you're going to get that here. There is no lag or stutter in any animations and the load times are virtually non-existent in almost every case.Movement from hole to hole is quick and a round of golf can be too.I can play a round of 9 holes in about 12 to 15 minutes (I'm still on the 9 hole challenges at this point in the game).

When it comes to the controls used in playing the game, they are easy to learn and not hard to master, with one exception. This new version introduces a new type of advanced shot method where you watch the backswing of your player and look for flashing lights at certain points to gauge how hard to swing.Upon making your downswing, a circular meter below the golfer has a ring around it that collapses toward a ball icon and when the circle shrinks to encompass the ball, you hit the X button on the controller at just the right time to get a perfect hit.It sounds complicated but it isn't really. It is all a matter of timing and a little patience required.I personally still use the traditional shot method as seen in previous Hot Shot games which is the power bar at the bottom which gives you more precision in setting power and showing just where to hit a solid impact on the ball.I've found the advanced shot type a bit awkward personally and even though the manual says that the new method offers better range and impact zone, I haven't noticed any significant differences between the two shot methods and this is after playing many rounds with many different types of clubs using both shot types.

So far I've only played on two courses in the challenge mode (you open up new courses after beating a computer opponent in each challenge session) and what I've seen so far is good stuff. There is options to play regular games (stroke, match play, etc.) aside from the challenges and you can do practice rounds also where you can set course conditions to help you make shots in certain types of situations. There are 5 main characters that you can choose to start out with and each one has their own individual strengths, animations, and funny ways of talking. There is also several different caddies that add a good dose of humor now and again during the rounds.

I haven't played online yet and I don't know If I will do that but the instruction manual is very detailed on how to do this and the manual is excellent regarding all other facets of the game also.Something to look forward to, according to the game makers, is the fact that later on you can go online to download new content for the game including new courses, new gear, and other goodies. If you're a past fan of Hot Shots Golf, I would definitely recommend picking up Out of Bounds because it's a greatgame in my opinion and should bring many hours of fun to those that like golf.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 Review

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me say that I really, REALLY enjoy this game. You absolutely must have the motion plus attachment to get the most out of the game, too.I actually did take my motion plus off once and played that way... and not only did I lose a substantial amount of control over what I was doing with the swing, but the feedback is pretty worthless too. With the motion plus you get the club face angle and the direction of the swing.Without the motion plus you get only the direction. Also, one great improvement in my mind is that it's much more difficult to hole out a shot from the fairway.I played TW 09 about a dozen times (renting it) and had about 15 holes-in-one and numerous other eagles by sinking it from the fairway. When the heart thumps started and the close-up on the ball came on, I learned to leave the spin alone because that thing was going in the hole EVERY TIME.On TW 10 the heart thumps mean it's getting CLOSE, but I've only had one ace in two months of play... and I like it since it's more realistic.

I have found an oddity in the game as far as game play is concerned. If you are a LEFT-HANDED golfer using the "Play Now" feature, you will be playing as Tiger (who is obviously right-handed), and you will see left-handed draw (with the ball flying left-to-right) show up as a fade for the right-handed Tiger (which makes sense, as a right-handed fade also flies left-to-right), and vice versa. You can make your own custom golfer as a lefty and he or she will appear left-handed on the screen.

So, that being said, there is much to ridicule about this game. Most of it happens if you happen to be pretty good at it.Let's suppose you're playing a tournament and (either because you're that good or have a great round) shoot something like a 61 or lower, and nobody else has shot better than 67 or so.You would think that you have a nice cushion, right?Well, you do until you tee off the next round. The computer AI apparently thinks anyone who shoots 61 is a sandbagger (for the non-golfer, that's someone who is a lot better than he or she claims to be and shoots much better than his or her handicap). As a result, in the next round (and subsequent rounds in that tournament), the computer-controlled players will start shooting scores like 56 or 57 so that they can catch up to you.The problem is, if you don't normally shoot as low as 61 and wind up following it with 67 or 68, you're now behind, and you won't catch up unless you can shoot 55 or so in the round following. So to win a tournament you must either (a) hold back by missing putts or hitting the occasional shot out of bounds so you don't beat the AI players by too much, or (b) simply shoot 54 or 55 each round so they can never catch up.

Within all that are the individual updates. It's interesting to read that someone in the tournament has double-eagled a hole... especially if it's a par 3, since that means the score on the hole was a ZERO!!!!! Tell me how that works, please?I've yet to finish a hole in TW golf (or in real golf, for that matter) with a ZERO!The only thing that was nearly as ridiculous as that was noticing that someone had made a hole-in-one... on #2 at TPC Sawgrass, which is a par-5!

Needless to say, I try to ignore those stupid updates and play my game, but it's a little annoying to think that for all the effort they put into the game, such stupid things are a part of it.Maybe they'll fix it for TW 11, but who knows...

Hot Shots Golf Fore Review

Hot Shots Golf Fore

I was a big fan of Hot Shots Golf 3.Given a choice, I'd play it before I'd play Madden or Grand Theft Auto.It wasn't perfect, but there was a lot there to keep you busy and challenged.

Now comes Hot Shots Golf Fore and a great product gets even better! Some of my favorite characters from HSG3 return (although I mourn the abscence of Blue, my best power and control player in HSG3) with many more courses added (all of the full-sized 18-hole courses from HSG3 return as well).Miniature golf is added (I guess this was a feature that was on versions before HSG3, but eliminated in that game), which is a nice change of pace, although I doubt I'll spend much time there.

I'm still in the early stages of play, but there appears to be more clubs and more golf ball options in this game and play is much much tougher.I seem to remember zipping through the first ten or so "VS mode" matches in HSG3, but I've already lost my first match in this new version (one big change is that "VS mode" matches - where you play against another character and if you beat him/her, you unlock the character for yourself - is now 9 holes in length instead of 18 holes). So, if you lose, you won't have spent as much time in that loss and can try again.

There's a lot more, but it looks like Sony did it right again!Although, like a previous reviewer, I want to know what the creators were thinking with some of the comments of players and caddies ("I love show tunes")!

Get it!

PS - By the way, the strategy guide for this game (sold separately) is a very attractive book, but is pretty much useless.

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 Review

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a difficult review for me to write, not because the game is complicated, but because I have never seen a sequel to a game that is so close to the original in just about every detail. I played the original on PSP for hundreds of hours and could not put it down, in fact I've been playing HSG since PS One.

For those that haven't played it, it's a simple to learn, fun to master golf game that doesn't take the game too seriously, yet can be very challenging at times. There are 12 courses in this one, up from 6 in the first, and they grow increasingly more difficult as you progress through various "challenges" (tournaments), earning new clothes, gear and players along the way. The controls are very simple, as not a lot of adjustments can be made to pull off unusual shots, but there are enough options to satisfy experienced golfers.

The graphics are bright, clean and colorful, the music is peppy (almost to a fault) and overall the production is flawless. Appealing to kids as well as adults for a light hearted round of the great game of golf.

My main complaint, if you can call it that, is that this game is so similar to the first that it's almost an insult. You start the game and see the girl waving to you from behind a desk with the EXACT SAME ANIMATION as the first game. Then you pick your character, start the first round on, believe it or not, the SAME COURSE AS THE ORIGINAL. That's right, South Alps CC. An exact clone, right down to the yodels from the hills. I have never in my long life as a gamer seen a game copy it's predecessor so closely. This is what makes this review so difficult to write: It's still a great game in itself, but if you've played the first one you might be a bit annoyed to have to start all over and unlock the same courses you have already played. Shouldn't a sequel advance the title, not clone it? I guess they figured if the formula works so well, why mess with it?

The main difference, to be fair, is a good one though. Multiplayer online via WiFi is a very welcome addition. Hopefully enough players will log on to make it worthwhile, as a 16 player tourney, as advertised, would be awesome.

Granted I'm only a few hours into the game, but here's hoping some new surprises pop up to make this a truly new adventure in video gaming golf. Recommended to new players to HSG, but veterans may want to wait and get it on sale.

Mario Golf Advance Tour Review

This game is incredibly fun!
I'm not a golfer.I also don't play golf games on the PC, on a console, in a house, with a mouse... you get the idea.I saw all the great reviews of this on different game sites and thought I'd give it a try. After all, it was made by Camelot, the same designers who did the outstanding Golden Sun games for the GBA.
Rather than just being about playing golf, you get to spend time talking to other golfers, finding secrets, playing minigames, getting custom tickets so you can pick up special clubs, and gaining experience to improve your abilities. You have a partner in the game too and have to balance out spending experience points on your own character and on your partner.Get too good yourself and you'll be slammed on doubles play.
This game is simple to play and hard to master. You can perform the basic commands easily, but can really customize how you hit the ball, the spin you give it and more. You can make each shot as complex as you want to.
Mario Golf is a really really fun game.I thought I'd just play a few holes and haven't put it down for three days. This is a must have, up there with my top 5 games for GBA - Advance Wars 2, Golden Sun 2, WarioWare, Final Fantasy Tactics and now Mario Golf.
