Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 Review

First, let me say that I really, REALLY enjoy this game. You absolutely must have the motion plus attachment to get the most out of the game, too.I actually did take my motion plus off once and played that way... and not only did I lose a substantial amount of control over what I was doing with the swing, but the feedback is pretty worthless too. With the motion plus you get the club face angle and the direction of the swing.Without the motion plus you get only the direction. Also, one great improvement in my mind is that it's much more difficult to hole out a shot from the fairway.I played TW 09 about a dozen times (renting it) and had about 15 holes-in-one and numerous other eagles by sinking it from the fairway. When the heart thumps started and the close-up on the ball came on, I learned to leave the spin alone because that thing was going in the hole EVERY TIME.On TW 10 the heart thumps mean it's getting CLOSE, but I've only had one ace in two months of play... and I like it since it's more realistic.

I have found an oddity in the game as far as game play is concerned. If you are a LEFT-HANDED golfer using the "Play Now" feature, you will be playing as Tiger (who is obviously right-handed), and you will see left-handed draw (with the ball flying left-to-right) show up as a fade for the right-handed Tiger (which makes sense, as a right-handed fade also flies left-to-right), and vice versa. You can make your own custom golfer as a lefty and he or she will appear left-handed on the screen.

So, that being said, there is much to ridicule about this game. Most of it happens if you happen to be pretty good at it.Let's suppose you're playing a tournament and (either because you're that good or have a great round) shoot something like a 61 or lower, and nobody else has shot better than 67 or so.You would think that you have a nice cushion, right?Well, you do until you tee off the next round. The computer AI apparently thinks anyone who shoots 61 is a sandbagger (for the non-golfer, that's someone who is a lot better than he or she claims to be and shoots much better than his or her handicap). As a result, in the next round (and subsequent rounds in that tournament), the computer-controlled players will start shooting scores like 56 or 57 so that they can catch up to you.The problem is, if you don't normally shoot as low as 61 and wind up following it with 67 or 68, you're now behind, and you won't catch up unless you can shoot 55 or so in the round following. So to win a tournament you must either (a) hold back by missing putts or hitting the occasional shot out of bounds so you don't beat the AI players by too much, or (b) simply shoot 54 or 55 each round so they can never catch up.

Within all that are the individual updates. It's interesting to read that someone in the tournament has double-eagled a hole... especially if it's a par 3, since that means the score on the hole was a ZERO!!!!! Tell me how that works, please?I've yet to finish a hole in TW golf (or in real golf, for that matter) with a ZERO!The only thing that was nearly as ridiculous as that was noticing that someone had made a hole-in-one... on #2 at TPC Sawgrass, which is a par-5!

Needless to say, I try to ignore those stupid updates and play my game, but it's a little annoying to think that for all the effort they put into the game, such stupid things are a part of it.Maybe they'll fix it for TW 11, but who knows...

Red Steel 2 Review

Red Steel 2

I wasn't really a fan of westerns as a kid. Well, that is until my brother made me watch A Few Dollars More. After that I loved them, the serious ones, and the sillier, campy funny ones. They're all so delicious. Unfortunately, I've never been a big fan of shooters both first and third as far as video game genres go, and nothing I've tried has really changed that, so sadly I haven't really been able to enjoy westerns in my games as all of them are shooters. I really like seeing the character I'm playing, the way they move, attack, run, and I don't really get that with first person games. That and shooting in general just doesn't particularly do it for me. Even in most movies I prefer hand to hand or sword combat, it just feels more dynamic and interesting to me, and it's no different for me in my video games. Well, that is until I saw some game play footage of Red Steel 2.

I hadn't heard of the original before this, as I didn't own a Wii at launch. But when I saw footage of a character that looks like Clint Eastwood meets Vash the Stampede meets Samurai Jack going through mobs using a combination of both swordplay and gun slinging, I was intrigued. Then I actually played it, and I was blown away. I just beat the game this morning, and I absolutely love it. I started on easy, go the hang of it then switched up to medium a little bit into the game. I plan to go back and beat it on Ninja.

As far as presentation goes, this is easily one of the most stylish games on the Wii, and one of if not the most graphically impressive. I'm biased about this however, as I love the Wild West, I love samurais, I love schizo tech, and I really love Cel Shading. The game has an absolutely killer sound track as well, with a love of really fast paced western themes. The story seems okay I guess, you play a nameless protagonist, returning to your hometown after being banished years before. You come to find it taken over by a gang called The Jackals, and their leader knocks you out and ties you to the back of his bike. While originally thought to be a random gang raid, it beginning to look as though this is more of a war against your clan. The voice acting is okay I guess. It's nothing to impressive or memorable, but nothing painful either. Kind of unrelated, but I bought the game bundled with the Wii+ as I didn't own one at the time of purchased, and I love the box it came with. I love boxes. There should be more of them.

A lot of people are going to complain about the fact that this game doesn't exactly have 1:1, but it just wouldn't work if it did. Most players aren't exactly expert swordsmen, so trying to make it an over realistic sword fighting simulator would be a waste of time. Making it 1:1 would completely ruin it as an action game. I absolutely love the combat system. I mean it. I love how involved and intuitive it is. Its fast paced, exhilarating, and fun. Its undoubtedly my favorite combat system to come out this generation and possibly ever. I really believe this is the next evolution in motion control, and a new gold standard for Wii action games.

That said, the game isn't perfect however. There are a few complaints but they are overshadowed by just how fun and unique the game is. My first complaint is how standard the missions themselves are, there needs to be more variety and uniqueness to go along with a game like this. This one annoys me, but its an out of combat thing. The game works because of the automatic mob targeting in combat, so you can swing your sword without your camera flying around all the place. This is not true when out of combat, so when you want to bash in crates that contain money, your camera swings around like an elastic flail and not all of the breakable objects have the option to Z target them. I've resorted to just using the spin attack to deal with crates, a button to fix the camera still outside of combat would have been nice, the "C" would have worked well, and then the "Check Objectives" menu could have just been included into the pause menu.

In addition, this game is absolutely 100% about the combat and showing what the Wiimotion+ can do. If you're expecting something particularly deep, you aren't really going to get it here either. That and while the environments look amazing, and the game also has a Metroid Prime feel to it, but the game world itself is very shallow. Most areas are corridors and moderately sized rooms with little variation in it. This game isn't particularly deep, but the combat in this game is unlike anything I've ever really seen. How involved you get with the sword fighting is really unique, and the way the special attacks are built are very intuitive and dare I say, revolutionary. So if you're getting this game, expect combat like you've never seen before in a video game. Its exhausting actually! I actually enjoy that aspect, it just feel so involved.

I would give this game a 8/10 ish or a 9/10, with 1 being bad and 5 being average. I already adore this game. It ripped the title of "My favorite 3rd party Wii title" right out of No More Heroes 2's hands, and this is coming from someone who isn't a fan of FPSs at all really.

TL:DR
Pros:
Absolutely amazing combat system.
Great visuals, music, and world.
Good challenge.

Cons:
World layout could be improved.
More mission variety.

Closing comments:
I adore Red Steel 2. Its an absolutely amazing game and could go down as the most improved sequel in video game history.

EA SPORTS Grand Slam Tennis Review

EA SPORTS Grand Slam Tennis
Average Reviews:

I have a feeling that many people will pick up this game and be initially frustrated. They may feel the game is not completely tracking their movements. Or that when they try to swing in a particular way it is not reflected in the game. Now, this game is by no means perfect, and some of these frustrations are real.

But I strongly urge you to keep with it and not give up. If you spend some time with the game you will quickly realize how brilliant and addicting it is. The point where you come to this realization will likely be when you are able to achieve a degree of consistency in your swing and direct the ball where you want it to go, and I provide tips for this at the end of this review.

I will say this - above all else this game is very, very fun. Some of the rallies you will have with your friends or while playing online will stick in your mind long after the match has been won or lost. You will agonize over missed shots. You will cherish your winners. In that sense this game captures the essence of what is great about playing tennis.

It is an addictive game that will keep bringing you back to play it until your arm hurts (and trust me, if you are not used to the exercise your arm will hurt).

As I said, this game is not perfect. The career mode should be more elaborate. Online play, great in itself and usually lag free, lacks tournament modes. And even when you have mastered the controls you will at times be frustrated. But that's tennis.

Here are some hints for achieving good control in Grand Slam Tennis using Wii Motion Plus. If you are waiting for the game to arrive at your door I recommend you keep these handy for your reference, since they will very likely be of help when you start playing:

-Be aware that the (imaginary) face of the racket is the side of the wiimote. That would mean that for the most part you want the wiimote to be parallel to the ground while you are swinging (i.e. the buttons are facing the ceiling). The index finger should be over the `b' button and the thumb should be over the `a' button.

-use defined swings (this is not wii sports tennis were you can just waggle, you really need to bring you arm back). This may sound like a given but it is actually one of the hardest things to realize if you have gotten used to wii sports tennis.

-start your swing as early as possible (just when the ball has been hit by your opponent, and you have determined what direction it is going to go), and follow through when the ball has reached you. Mastering this ability will markedly improve your game, and you will also have less instances where the WM+ is confused about if you are trying a backhand or a forehand.

-if you seem to only be able to backspin/topspin the issue is likely with your wrist on the follow through - you are twisting it. Go to the practice court and work on that.

-if you seem to only be able to slice you need to work on keeping your swing level. Trust me, its possible to hit straight - go to the practice court and work on that.

-when you are waiting for the other guy to serve, hold the wiimote still and parallel to the ground, don't worry about what your on screen character is doing.

-serving in GST is not 1:1 - it is the same as wii sports tennis. You swing the wiimote when the ball is at its apex. You can control the direction of the serve (while the ball is in the air) using the d-pad.

- you can only do lobs and drops using the `a' and `b' buttons.

Introducing the New Standard Wii Controller

The Wii Remote Plus Controller is the new standard controller for the Wii gaming system, shipping with new Wii systems as well as available for individual purchase. Like the original Wii Remote before it, this new controller utilizes a triple axis accelerometer along with a built-in optical sensor that works in conjunction with the Wii sensor bar. Together this enables the recognition of player movement as well as gives the controller the ability to act as a pointing device used in-game. Yet what really sets the Wii Remote Plus controller apart is its incorporation of additional gyroscope technology.

Wii Remote Plus gyroscope technology provides on-the-fly rotational motion recognition, once available only to Wii players who purchased the additional Wii MotionPlus accessory for the Wii Remote. The Wii Remote Plus controller contains all these motion-capturing capabilities within the body of a single controller. To top it off the Wii Remote Plus controller maintains the same compatibility to games as the Wii Remote, so you can play most of your old favorites with it. It is also the same size as the Wii remote. Taken together this means no more extra accessories to buy in order to experience the full effect of past or future games designed to take advantage of advanced Wii MotionPlus technology; no more compatibility issues with existing Wii Remote peripherals and skins. Just sync up your Wii Remote Plus controller and have at it.

Key Features

Moving forward the Wii Remote Plus is the standard Wii controller, shipping with all consoles
Incorporates the functionality of the original Wii Remote and that of the Wii MotionPlus accessory in a single controller
Comes in a variety of attractive colors, many of which match existing Wii console color schemes
Maintains the same compatibility and backwards compatibility as the original Wii Remote, meaning that you can use it to play these games even if the game contains no advanced motion-control features
The Wii Remote Plus controller is the same size as the Wii Remote, ensuring compatibility with all existing Wii Remote peripherals and skins
