PlayStation 3 HDMI Cable & USB Cable Review

PlayStation 3 HDMI Cable & USB Cable

Its difficult to wax poetic about a cable - if it works well you should never even notice that its there.

And I want to be careful here not to wade into a discussion of how much a cable is worth, especially when talking about digital signals that are either there, or not.

I pondered the question of $3 or $300 cables for a long while, and chose to hedge my bets by buying this one for the following reasons:

a) Its pricing places it right in the middle of the pack.
b) you can see just by looking at it why it might merit this price.
c) It would be madness for SCEA to sell a product as graphically intense as the PS3 and hobble it with poor quality cables. (These cables are made by SCEA too.)

So what do I get? I get extremely high cable construction quality, and a set of extra long cables. The 10-foot USB cable length is a boon since it lets me position myself comfortably away from the monitor.

The cable jacket is a very flexible cloth like material that makes it look like this cable will last forever, no matter how tightly I squeeze it through the openings in my entertainment center. The ends fit well into my HDMI connectors and are supposed to be gold plated.

All I care about now, is that the images are wonderfully clear ... and I can safely go back to ignoring cables.

Pokemon HeartGold Version Review

I bought both Heart Gold and Soul Silver for my nine-year-old boy.I have lupus with photosensitivity and don't get to spend a lot of time outside with him, and I don't like to just plug him into a video game, so I compromise by playing video games with him. Those games have to be interactive and interesting enough to not drive me crazy. The ds pokemon games take care of both those concerns.

He chose Soul Silver for his game, so this one is mine. It's been years since I looked at the old Gameboy Color games, but this one seems to be just like the old one, except for the enhancements that came along with the double screen and the touch pad.The music includes more recent themes as well, but it makes me happy to hear the older ones.

My son absolutely loves the pokewalker.I love the idea of the pokewalker, but I haven't used mine, yet.We have used his to take his pokemon down to the park to take advantage of the not-too-bright sunlight.

The figurine is cute, but Ho-Oh is not as well-crafted as Lugia.Lugia is magnificent and is rendered consistently with the better graphic capabiiities of later games.Ho-Oh looks like he's straight off the Gameboy Advance. At best.I'm still very happy with the purchase, though.

I've played this game right through to the end (in japanese) and all I can say is WOW! This tops the original in every possible way. The graphics, the sound, the moves and the gameplay in general is simply light years ahead of the original. The battles are simply spectacular! Almost all of theexisting moves have been beautifully redesigned and there are an extraforty as well. The otherwise dull Quick Attack for instance looks superb onthis game. Titan Quest Gold (Titan Quest and Titan Quest Immortal Throne) Review

The game is billed as an action-RPG. The number of NPC's is limited, the game is relatively linear, save some sidequests that are optional but not exactly secret since every NPC with something important to say has an exclamation point above their head. You start the game as a single hero (or heroine as is my preference) with nothing but the tunic on your back. You only get to chose male or female, no races, classes, or even differing appearances (except your tunic color). The reason I gave it four stars for an above average game is the beautifully rendered ancient worlds. If you love ancient history this game is even more fun, but even if you don't, the graphics are great. Also they have a Mastery system that is innovative and allows you to choose two separate Masteries (second at level 8) to customize and diversify your character. You can use many different weapons and are not restricted based on your Mastery but rather your attributes, (a weakling will not be wearing heavy armor, etc.) This game is all action, there is no running errands around town for this guy to get that information etc. which happens often in RPGs (I love that kind too, don't get me wrong!). You go out, kill lots (lots, seriously) of enemies, build up nice and quickly, then talk to some guys, then go out and kill some more. You can find tons of items, some ordinary, some magical, some rare and some legendary. You also can make artifacts by collecting ingredients and recipes and taking them to an enchanter.
A few more pluses, some Mastery skills allow for summoned "pets" (wolves, elementals, etc.) to help you; skill points foolishly spent can be reclaimed and reallocated with the help of a mystic and some cash. If your inventory gets a little full and you don't want to sell certain items there is a helpful caravan driver where you can store stuff and buy more room if needed. I am a fan games like Baldurs' Gate, Neverwinter Nights, etc. so this game was a departure from that more in depth style of RPG, but I still found it fun and the price was right so I would definitely recommend it for some stress-relieving hacking action.

Age of Empires 2 Gold Review

Age of Empires 2 Gold

The Age of Kings (AoK) along with its expansion pack, AoK:TC (The Conquerors--which we now call "AoC" when both are installed) is a superb game for either "Multiplayers" who play on-line or "Singleplayers" who don't.If a game which has a historical aspect to it which resides in the 1,000 year realm of ancient history stated has appeal for you (which isn't all 'hoked_up' with fantasy creatures), you cannot go wrong with purchasing the "Gold pack".I've been playing AoK/AoC for more than 2 years now and it still holds fascination for me... and many others that I know.Just today I was teaching one of my 10 year old grandsons about the game when he was visiting. We'll get him the Gold pack.My son introduced me to the game in Dec. '99.
Yes, in order to play AoC which epitomizes the development of the game, you need to install from both disks, first installing AoK, then removing it and installing the AoK:TC disk which you leave in the tray (it must be in there when you want to play). You can then go online to either Microsoft's or Ensemble Studios' websites for the game, Age of Kings: The Conquerors, and download the 1.0c patch which fixes any minor 'bugs' discovered and rectifies a few civilization "balancing issues" which have come up.Thus buying the Gold pack is a real good deal for anyone getting the game now as it cost me more than twice as much to have bought AoK & then AoK:TC, as they came out.
There are so many ways to play this game that it almost boggles the mind, but preferred game modes are "Conquest" followed by "Deathmatch" in popularity amongst "Agers".If you really want to learn to play the game using the various "strategies" for the 18 civilizations which Agers have developed, it's a good idea to join a good Ager gaming clan such as Tonto Clan, which caters to both Multi- and Singleplayers. You can find Tonto Clan by doing a websearch for "tontoclan1", or look for "Tonto Empire".The clan celebrates its 2nd birthday the 13th of March, 2002, so you know they aren't fly-by-nighters.And that's a good place to ask any questions one might have about the game.
A final thought:"Real Time Strategy" is a bit of a misnomer, oxymoron, in computer games as "twitch-and-bang" on the keyboard doesn't really give a person time to think, only act and react. But an aspect of AoC that makes it come closer to being enabled as a true strategy and tactics game is that you have the "Pause key" which when playing Singleplayer you can use to pause the game in progress in order to "think on it" a bit and decide what next you want to do.This brings yet another dimension to the game that most don't have.
There are other RTS 'historically based war games' which have come out since "Age", but it is surprising how many people will try them and then just keep coming back.... to AoC.And, for my money the next RTS slated to come along that might be as good or possibly better isn't projected to hit the market until Spring (if then) of 2003.

Pokemon SoulSilver Version Review

I'm going to start right out with it. BUY THIS GAME! This game is amazing on many fronts which is why it deserves a buy if you have a DS (maybe even buy a DS to play this game).

Gameplay: 10/10

The gameplay is as fresh as ever. The formula that GameFreak put down so many years ago still works. If you have already played any of the previous Pokemon games, there are basically no changes, other than the fact of the addition of a few minigames and a pokemon can walk behind you. For newcomers, here's how the Pokemon formula works: You start an adventure with a starter pokemon, and then train to become the best pokemon trainer in the world. You do this by defeating other trainers who roam the land while also catching some extra pokemon of your own. The formula is straight up addictive and the plot is also well done.

Graphics: 8/10

It's pokemon on the DS. The game uses the same graphics engine as Diamond, Pearl and Platinum and yes, the graphics aren't top notch. I have definitely seen better on the DS (Mario Kart being a great example), but once again, the entire point of Pokemon is the gameplay and the replay value, not the graphics. As a plus however, many trainers have new animations and some gyms just look really, REALLY good. The atmosphere outside of special events could've used some work though.

Sound: 7/10

I will admit it, I am getting a bit disappointed with GameFreak recycling their 8-bit recorded cries for the Pokemon on every single game. These cries are the same we had 10 years ago. On the other hand, the overall soundtrack is really good, and I have also heard there is a way to get the original soundtrack back in the game by achieving a certain item. In general, the sound is ok, but I think GameFreak needs to do a little overhaul with the Pokemon cries.

Replay Value: 15/10

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? 16 BADGES! 3 TOTAL STARTERS YOU CAN GET! Straight up epic. I, in my own right, already thought that all the other games that only had 8 badges and one region were long enough, but WOW. This game is amazing (I already had the Japanese version, and have played to the second Elite Four, and it's taken me a good 40 hours already) in this criteria for sure.

Final Verdict:

If you have a DS, BUY THIS GAME. If you don't, BUY A DS, and then BUY THIS GAME. Amazing characters, amazing battles, amazing starter pokemon (who doesn't love them a nice Typhlosion?), and great replay value. You won't be disappointed.
