Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage Review

I was a little surprised by the earlier negative review based on how easy this game was. The thing I found best about it was that the difficulty is completely variable. Each world/level has many optional tasks that you canchoose to perform or to skip. I can see that you could hurry through bydoing just the minimum for each level but where's the fun in that? It is amarvellous antedote for the rest of the tacky, poorly conceived games thatI have rented for my 7 year old daughter and is the ONLY one I have had anyinterest in playing myself. This one is definately on the Christmas list

The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon Review

The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon

I was a little nervous when I read that a new company would be taking over the Legend of Spyro trilogy to produce this final installment, Dawn of the Dragon. Unlike many reviewers, I prefer this remake over the original Spyro games, because, being a fan of epic fantasy, I enjoy that the game is more mature and mirrors many great fantasy sagas before it, even if this means that the plot is rather predictable.
Dawn of the Dragon begins where The Eternal Night left off, with Spyro, his dragonfly companion Sparx, and former nemesis Cynder trapped in the crystal where Spyro froze them after his battle with Gaul. They are soon freed, and the final quest in the Legend of Spyro trilogy begins. Spyro and Cynder must team up with a host friends and allies, from cheetah warriors to dragon guardians, to defeat Malefor, the Dark Master, who plans to end the world and recreate it as his kingdom of evil.
This game is visually fascinating, with beautiful scenery that illustrates the mood of the game, from the lush meadows of Twilight Falls to the ominous Burned Lands where Malefor resides. This, coupled with an engaging and epic score, sets a sweeping mood of the game and creates a rich fantasy world that I found very exciting to interact with.
The gameplay of Dawn of the Dragon is similar to that of the previous two Legend of Spyro titles, with Spyro controlling the four elements of Fire, Ice, Earth, and Electricity, each of which can be upgraded so that the player can perform a variety of interesting elemental attacks. The game also introduces co-op play with Cynder, who is also given four upgradeable elements: Poison, Wind, Shadow, and Fear. Besides these attacks, the two heroes can also engage in numerous melee combo attacks to battle foes.
Like many reviewers, I agree that, despite the variety of attacks, combat can sometimes become repetitive, with multiple hordes of enemies that seem to have the miraclous ability to continually regenerate. The Burned Lands level particularly irked me, because it seemed I could walk no more than a few feet before I was suddenly enclosed by towering walls and trapped in a swath of enemies with few health and energy crystals to aid me in battle.
That being said, some sections of combat were very exciting and enjoyable. Once you get into the rhythm of the battle, it can often be satisfying to rotate between the four elements at Spyro and Cynder's disposal and watch as you dispose of one foe after another. The boss battle in Dragon City, where Spyro and Cynder are pitted against a towering servant of the Dark Master known as a Golem, is one of my favorites, because the precise timing in combat makes it very challenging and exciting.
Certain parts of the game became irritating after a while, especially the level where Spyro and Cynder are given the task to slay a colossal monster known as the Destroyer by flying around and destroying the dark crystals which power it. Because of limited camera movement, these crystals were difficult to locate, and it soon became more of an annoying chore than a puzzle. The end of that sequence, however, where the two dragons must fly into the monster to destroy the last of the crystals, is both visually fascinating and thrilling.
This brings me to the flying, a new addition to the Spyro franchise. Both dragons are given the ability to take to the air whenever they please, which is very useful when attempting to cross chasms or battling airborne foes. Many reviewers have complained about how the game will often keep you from flying as high as you wish, which limits the game's freedom. Well, what did you expect? That the game would simply let you dash all around wherever you wanted without any limits? Ha! This is a video game, which means that there have to be limits to everything to keep gameplay controlled. Personally, I found flight very enjoyable and airborne combat also extremely engaging and exciting. Overall, it was a great addition to the series.
In summary, Dawn of the Dragon has some faults, but I think that it is a solid conclusion to the Legend of Spyro trilogy. With an epic score and visuals, decent combat, and many enhancing abilities, this game is a very good addition to the platforming genre and the entire Spyro franchise.

Spyro A Hero's Tail Review

Spyro A Hero's Tail

I have always been a rabid Spyro fan, probably more so than what others would consider mentally healthy. The first three Spyro's are still my favorite video games fo all time. I, like many Spyro fans were, was disgusted with Enter The Dragonfly, whichI bought out of loyalty despite bad reviews.

When I saw a video for Spyro A Heroes Tail I had some hope, as it did not appear choppy and laggy like its predecessor. I got the game yesterday and I have gotten through a decent amount of it. I am enjoying the game, but I consider it a new brand of Spyro, as it seems detached from the rest of the series.

Spyro's moves have ben altered, instea of jumping and gliding you now double jump and glide, that took getting used to. There are small things that bother me, basically that there are four homeworlds with only two levels each. Don't get me wrong, the levels are MASSIVE, but it doesn't feel the same, and you walk into the lvels more or less as opposed to taking the "old school" portals.

Rather than the passive slapstick humor used in the other games you often find Spyro giving a commentary to the player, it doesn't work. There seems to be very little connection between this and the other Spyro game's, every voice actor is different (except maybe Sgt. Byrd) and there are new completely useless dragon characters that are Spyro's size. And they turned Moneybags into some kind of Arabian salesman, whats that about?

Overall, the game is slightly above mediocre, and if you are expecting a Spyro returning to tis roots, your in for a dissapointment.

The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon Review

The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon

Insomniac has taken all the best elements of the first two Spyro games, brought them into the third, spruced them up and added a whole lot more from their bag of tricks to provide the best Spyro game to date. This time around, Spyro -- with the help of his friends from Spyro 2 -- is trying to rescue dragon eggs from an evil sorceress. (Said eggs always hatch just as he gets them, treating the player to a brief animation of a baby dragon.) The environment is more interactive, with cannons, submarines, skateboards and more to play with. And the most dramatic change from the previous two games is that in addition to playing as Spyro, the game features play as Sparx the Dragonfly (in old school videogaming action), Bentley the Yeti (who plays whack-a-gnome and boxes), Sgt. Byrd the flying commando penguin, Shiela (who has a sidescrolling platform game in addition to her high-jumping levels) and Agent 9 the crazed space monkey (whose Doom parody level has to be seen to be believed). And through it all, the animation, voice work and overall design is flat-out charmig. Easier than Spyro 1, larger and more impressive than Spyro 2, "Spyro: Year of the Dragon" is this Playstation series going out with a bang. Great fun for the whole family.

Spyro the Dragon Review

Spyro the Dragon
Average Reviews:

This game is a very fun game.Very well made. You play Spyro(DUH), a young dragon. All the other dragons(I think there are 60 or so of them),have been captured and turned to stone, and are scattered about in the different worlds. The Dragon Eggs have been stolen by theives who are running around and hiding in different worlds. The dragon's treasure is lying around everywhere(not to mention alot of it has been turned into enemies). And who is the cause of this?GNASTY GNORC.And now, as Spyro, you must save the dragons, find the eggs, collect the treasure and defeat Gnasty Gnorc.Ok,that's the plot basicall; now here is what the game is like:As Spyro, your mission is to(As I said before) save the dragons, find the tresure and rescue the eggs.Being a young dragon, your wings are not fully grown,so you can not fly.You can, however, glide over short distances. You also have the ability to(Of course)breathe fire and charge with your horns. There are several worlds throughout the game. Each of these worlds has one home level, and in each of the home levels, there are doorway/portholes through which lie other levels for the worlds. In each of the worlds there will be dragons, treasure and eggs.
Dragons:These have been turned to stone by Gnasty Gnorc. To save them you simply find them, then walk up to them or charge at them or Flame them. They will then come back to life and talk to you before flying away. Some will give you advice, others will thank you, and some will just talk (sometimes insulting you).
Treasure:Treusure is just lying around in different places. Most of the enemies turn into treasure(which looks like gem stones). Some treasure are in chests. Most chests can be rammed or flamed to open them, but some requre dynamite or fire works or other ways to open them.
Eggs: These are held by theives. To get them, you must chase after the theif and ram or flame him.
Enemies: There is a large variety of enemies (most enemies are really treasure that have been turned into minions for Gnasty Gnorc). Most can be killed by ramming or flaming, though some are armored and can only be hurt by flaming and not by ramming or visa versa. Some boss enemies, however, require special battle tactics.
There are also fairies who will help you in some way. Some will catch you if your falling, and will move you to safety, while others will give you a Super Strong fire breath(which will allow you to flame armored enemies).Hovering above Spyro is a dragonfly. The color of the dragon fly shows you your current health. Green, if your have full health, and red if you are very hurt.He will disappear if you get hurt when he is red.In each home world there are guys with hot air ballons. These ballooners tell you what you must do in that world for them to take you to the next world (you can always return to past worlds later to pck up anything you might have missed). In most worlds you usually have to find a certain number of dragons, treasure or eggs. Finally, you will get to Gnasty's world, where you will have to fight Gnasty Gnorc.
Well, that's "Spyro the Dragon".I recommend this game to anyone who has Playstation. It's not a waste of money,I assure you.

Spyro A Hero's Tale Review

Spyro A Hero's Tale

VERY ENTERTAINING, addictive, and fun.

Graphics were fine, colorful and pleasant, but not shockingly beautiful like in "Harvest Moon" or "Myst" games. They are probably average for games released in FY05, which is to say fairly crisp and enjoyable.

I shelled out the $50 for this game because I have a cold and I thought it might help take my mind off my runny nose.It sure did!The afternoon flew by (and today I feel much better). So far the hardest challenge has been successfully completing 1:42 Sgt. Byrd flying-obstacle-course/shoot-em-out.It took me, well, more than 10 tries.(We'll leave it at that.I'm not a very talented computer-flier.)Otherwise, the enemies seem to die pretty easily when confronted with my fire-breath.The challenges are varied, and the game provides lots of exploration adventure. It requires many drago-acrobatic maneuvers, most of which are achievable within 1 to 3 tries.(Not too frustrating, which is good for a 30+ adult who is relatively new to gaming.)

Overall, I would recommend it for kids or for the kind of adults who have tried Halo and found themselves stuck in a corner getting shot by everyone else. You know . . . the adventurer types who enjoy exploring fun environments and blowing up the occasional ugly bad guy, but who get bored by too much violence. ---MATA
