Pac-Man C.E. Review

Pac-Man C.E.

The easiest way to say this is that I'm not that great at the game, but I absolutely love it. I used to think that Ms. Pac-Man was the height of this formula, but CE just runs away with the title without much of a contest.

Changing mazes, heavily increasing speeds, opportunities for crazy scores if you play well. The game, more than anything else, heavily rewards staying alive... Eat enough dots and the score goes from an initial 10 to 50 over time, which adds up pretty significantly. Perhaps the biggest change to the formula is the addition of a timer. The game simply doesn't allow you to live on indefinitely due to memorizing patterns. Rather it forces you to think about what is the most important thing to pick up at any given moment. This concept makes trying to beat your friends' scores even more exciting because you know they're playing under the exact same constraints you have. While the scoring system allows you to build up a heavy amount of extra lives, dying eats up enough time that you could have probably have eaten all four ghosts with a power pellet (not to mention the scoring for the dots resets to 10 -- if you had that up to 50, that's a major knock on score).

The game also features morphing boards, a two sided system that requires you to eat fruit or an item to rebuild the opposite side and expanded ghost eating abilities (up to 3200 points per ghost if you chain enough together). There's several board and timer choices to choose from, including one that blacks out the entire maze design (a dull light surrounds you and the ghosts, lighting things up).

It's just incredibly addicting, it's incredibly fun and it's dozens of times more fun than the demo would ever let on. Really, the only thing that could make it better would be a multiplayer function.

In my opinion this is one of the top handful of XBLA games and arguably one of the better games released in its year. It's not just a Pac-Man title. It's Toru Iwatani's swan song that makes up for years upon years of strange choices for the franchise. These games don't need to be like Mario 64. They need to be like Pac-Man.

Pac-Man World Review

Pac-Man World

Namco is well known for releasing quality software and this is no exception. This game was delayed numerous times until Namco felt that it met or exceeded the expectations of today's gamers. The result: one of thisyear's best platform games and a fitting tribute to probably THE mostrecognized character in video game history. Included is the originalPac-Man classic, a 3-D maze mode (ala Pac-Mania), and a new Quest(adventure) mode. The Quest mode has Pac-Man taking a romp in a colorfuland well-designed 3-D world. This is polished platform gaming at itsfinest. Pac-Man has numerous capabilities to help him solve some veryclever little puzzles throughout the 20+ levels. Control is tight andresponsive. The music and sound effects are also well done. Had Pac-ManWorld contained only the Quest mode, it would have been a worthy purchase. But add in the classic and 3-D maze modes as well and you have a ton ofreplay value in your hands. Highly recommended, especially to those of youwho have young children. Also, Pac-Man World is sure to appeal togirlfriends or wives who otherwise wouldn't be caught dead playing a videogame.

Namco Museum Remix Review

Namco Museum Remix
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been following the Namco Museum series for quite a while and I bought Namco Museum on the Gamecube, which was very fun. This game beats the Gamecube version by leaps and bounds, because it takes advantage of the Wii controls in the "remix" games and has more classic games too.

Let me say, however, that if you don't like Pac-Man, or you don't like classic Namco games like Xevious and Dig Dug, then you won't like this game. Just don't bother, or rent it for the few games you will like. That being said, if you do like these things (like I do), then you will love this! The rundown:

Gator Panic Remix: You might have played Gator Panic for tickets at Chuck-e-Cheese's, it's a mallet game where you whomp gators coming out of a cave. This is the first time I've seen it in virtual form and it really works well on the Wii because you actually use the Wii-mote to whomp the gators. I think this one would be the most approachable for little kids.

Rally-X: This is probably the most boring of the games though if you like maze games like Pac-Man, you might enjoy this. You run around on a go-kart through a maze collecting flags and you have to avoid enemies that are chasing you. The only problem is that controlling your kart is a bit dodgy.

Pac'N Roll: This is a really great adventure/puzzle game where you roll Pac-Man through a 3D world picking up energy pellets and occasionally, power pellets that let you eat ghosts. You have a couple abilities to pick up and each level is really long. This is easily the best single-player game in the set.

Galaga Remix: This is a lot like the shooting game in Wii Play or old Zapper games, you use the Wii-mote to shoot at space-bugs while Pac-Man rolls through a space tube, and occasionally you have to shoot down missiles or shoot enemies blocking his path. Perfect "quick-fire" fun.

Pac-Motos: This is a classic "push your enemies off the sky-platform" type of game; as it progresses you have a lot of different enemies to go against and at the end of each world there is a boss stage (these are tough). Good if you like action puzzles.

That's all the games from a single player perspective. I should also mention that games like Gator Panic, Galaga, and Pac-Motos offer multiplayer modes, so they can be a lot of fun with friends. Bottom line is, if you like Namco games and you like Pac-Man, you won't regret buying this.

Pac Man World 3 Review

Pac Man World 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having had some experience with Pac-Man from the Atari 2600 days, as well as with newer Pac-Man titles like Pac-Man World Rally, Pac-Man: Adventures in Time, and Pac-Man All Stars on the PC, I have an affinity for Pac-Man. Also, I've thought since the Pac-Man World franchise debuted that it was sort of a novel thing to see Pac-Man join other iconic platform stars such as Mario, Pitfall Harry, Sonic, Crash, Gex, Jazz Jackrabbit, and Rayman in having his own series of platform adventures. So I decided to pick up Pac-Man World 3 when I saw it at Gamestop this past Saturday.

I'll say right off that I like the game even though I was a bit disappointed with the cheapened down production values (no jewel case), though the box has some mild embossing, and you do get a manual. I vaguely remember seeing a PC port of Pac-Man World 2 available not-so-long ago as well, and I've been having a good enough time with this game that I've decided now that I will probably pick it up too (stay tuned for the review). The game looks smoother than it's console brethren via courtesy of the PC's superior anti-aliasing, and a modest selection of fairly high resolution choices. As you might suspect, the game supports gamepads as well although you don't get any rumblepad support--which may or may not matter to you depending on whether or not you have one, but to me, this often neglected option becomes a question of why shouldn't the game have it as opposed to why it should.

As far as gameplay goes, you're getting most everything you would expect to get from a mascot platformer. The game is fun, funny, and you get your standardized platform game plot line of zany evil genius after world domination creates terrible machine, blah, blah blah. The levels are colorful, well designed and decorated with a good diversity of environments which goes a long way towards making exploring them fun. Some of the platform jumping levels can get a bit tense, but doesn't ratchet up the frustration factor too much. Pac-Man World retains many core gameplay elements of the original game, but has been updated to be comparable to modern platformers. One of several new conventions introduced in this title is the ability to control Pinky and Clyde, and Pac-Man himself has several new moves--Pac-Man can punch, wall jump, pole swing, and now has a much appreciated look ability. You also get to go on an item hunt as you trudge through the game (presumably to open up unlockables though I don't know what those are since I haven't completed the game yet) like collecting trophies which are awarded whenever Pac-Man eats all the fruit in any given level, and finding collector's cards. Pac-Man also gets new power ups like Ribbon Loop, Electro shock, chrome Pac-Man, Butt Bounce, and Super Stomp which are allot of fun to use against enemies as well. You also get a spattering of mini-games throughout the game as there are several areas where you can teleport, and try your luck with several classic Pac-Man maze levels. My single gripe with these however, is that the developers should have included Pac-Man's jump ability. Even this is a minor ding though, it just would have been nice to have since Pac fans have gotten used to it, and Pac-Man has had it in all his newer games since "Adventures in Time" for Dreamcast, and PC. There's also a very cool museum (accessible from the main menu) where you'll find an emulator with a full version of the original arcade game, an interview with the original designer, a collector's card viewer, a Pac timeline, and a preview of the already available Pac-Man World Rally.

All said and done, I'm going to give Pac-Man World 3 a good grade with minor dings for AWOL rumblepad support, and low production values (hence, the 4 star ratings). Overall, I'm satisfied with my purchase--I'm having a good time with the game, and don't see myself selling or trading it anytime soon. But as with Pitfall: The Lost Expedition, I think this game's main selling points are it's personality, and high nostalgia factor. But it definetely stands on it's own merits as a fun, entertaining mascot platform adventure, and it's a worthy bargain bin purchase for fans of Pac-Man, and mascot platformers.

UPDATED EDIT:Because this game uses the Starforce copy protection system which installs a proprietary unsigned driver, it is NOT Windows 7 compatible. However, it should work with Vista so long as signed driver enforcement is disabled. Unless it's been rolled back, signed driver enforcement can be disabled in Windows Vista through the group policy editor (start\run\gpedit.msc) or through a command line command which you can find the procedure for in online help forums.

Tekken 6 Review

Tekken 6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Others have made some very good observations regarding the Tekken 6 game for the XBOX 360, however, the focus of this review is more focused in regard to the wireless controller... Undoubtedly Tekken fans will love this wireless fighting stick! The build is rock solid with no wireless lag whatsoever! The top and corner edges are molded in a fashion that eliminates sharp corners and the control buttons are each plainly marked above or below respectively. Syncing to the XBOX 360 was a breeze via a recessed button, located on the face of the controller, in the upper left corner. This controller definitely brings the arcade feel home, and yet it is light enough to place on your lap without being uncomfortable. There are non-slip pads in each corner on the bottom for tabletop use. Also on the bottom there is a compartment for two AA batteries, which are included. A label is also on the bottom of this device, which reads: TEKKEN 6 WIRELESS FIGHTING STICK, C/N: HORI CO., LTD., M/N: 1501#00, P/N: 09072. In addition, for those of you, like myself, who have been on a hunt for an excellent controller to use with Pac-Man C.E. (Championship Edition), Ms. PAC-MAN and PAC-MAN, look no further! Again, this wireless fighting stick controller works flawlessly and with no lag with each of these games. [...] Hope this provides you with some additional insight. God bless!

Jakks / Namco Arcade Classics Plug and Play TV Games Review

Jakks / Namco Arcade Classics Plug and Play TV Games
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being a nostalgia freak, I'm always on the lookout for products that allow you to bring the arcade classics into your home. While this device gets major points for convenience (just plug it into your TV or VCR and go), I found the actual gameplay disappointing...and considerably different from the original arcade versions.
All of these games have the difficulty kicked WAY up.If you remember the arcade versions of Pac-Man, Galaxian, and Rally-X, you will be amazed at the speed of your pursuers. And if you remember the patterns that "expert" Pac-Man players employed to get high scores, don't bother. They don't work here.
This wouldn't be such a big deal if there were some configurable options, such as difficulty level and bonus thresholds. However, the manufacturer has solidly locked these games down - you can't even specify a two-player game.
Visually, the games look like the real deal, although there has been some reformatting of the screens to fit the aspect ratio of your TV screen. You'll recall that the original Pac-Man and Galaxian games featured long vertical screens. Here, they are squared off and the score counters moved from the top to the right side of the screen. No complaints there. But the attract modes of the games are not consistent with the arcade versions.Pac-Man and Galaxian are faithfully recreated, but Dig-Dug has only a static title screen. No character animation or instructions are provided. And, to my ear, the game sounds and music (for all of the games) are not authentic.Close, but not quite.
Pac-Man, Galaxian, and Dig-Dug were released a while back by Microsoft in their "Return of Arcade" product. While you need a Windows PC to play these, they are much more authentic recreations of the original games than what is provided here.Plus, they are fully configurable.
Regarding durability - I see some folks have issues, but my unit has held up fine. The only fit/finish issue I have is that the small metal cap at the base of the joystick is not fastened to anything, and slides up and down.Perhaps that is by design, but it seems flimsy.
If you just want to put the kids in front of the TV and keep them quiet, these issues probably don't matter. However, I have my doubts that young kids will show much interest in these antiques.I suspect the real target audience for this toy is people like me who remember the originals and want to recreate them at home. And for me, this falls short.

This has truly got to be one of the best games for PS2!If you enjoyed playing Pac Man, and all the other Pac Man games while you were growing up (yes, I'm talking to you, the one's who are now parents or in that late 30's early 40's age bracket.) then you will thoroughly enjoy this PS2 game! The graphics are fantastic, similar to the original Pac Man games but you can now butt-bounce and more!I'm on the verge of purchasing this item myself. The reason I can tell you that it is good is we justrecently rented it from a local chain store and my daughter (9) and I haven't been able to put it down!
Again, if you love Pac Man and you want to have fun and relive your childhood but with more umph then you'll enjoy this game! It's also ideal for the whole family not just us big kids!

Namco Museum Battle Collection Review

Namco Museum Battle Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Retro games are good, but when they are done right, they can be great. This is easily the greatest arcade compilation I've ever played. Not only can you play these classic arcade games in the palm of your hand, but you can enjoy the best collection of them all in one. 20 games, including "redone" games of Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Galaga and RallyX.

The quality of each classic is amazing and they play nearly exactly to the old arcade cabinets from the retro 80's, graphics, music, sound FX and all. The bestest of the best is clearly Galaga, Ms. Pac-Man, Pac-Man, RallyX and DigDug. But it doesn't stop there. There are 4 new Arrangement games of those 4 classics, I like to view them as remixes. They are are redone, upheavels in levels, gameplay, sound and graphics. The arranged Galaga is very addicting and you'll be hooked instantly. Dig Dug remade is basically the same game with better graphics and new enemies. RallyX, which was a decent game in the 80's, is redone and very fun to boot. These "arranged" games could have been sold seperately and probably most would have been pleased with them.

The originals are as fun as you remember them and just as challenging. Getting to that "key" in Pac-Man is still no easy task. But for novice gamers, never threat, you can continue from where you left off on many of the old games. Some of the other titles included like Grobada, Motos, Bosconian, DragonBuster and Galaxian are very obscure, but amazingly, they still do offer some fun factor. The rest you may not spent much time with in the past and most you might not play much, but you'll be happy with it overall.

Some might be a bit "squinty" eyed playing some of the old games like Pac-Man, the ratio of the originals were made for horizontal screens, so it's very small on the widescreen PSP, but thankfully they offered a "stretch" option for most of the titles. It looks a bit weird all stretched out, but it's better than playing on the little playing field.

Overall, this is clearly the best PSP game to buy, especially if you like classic arcade gaming, this is how it all began, no quarters needed...
