I never would have bought this game for myself.I can't decide if it was out of selfish or generous intent, but my 8 year old son bought this game for me for my birthday.I am so lucky. He and I are huge fans of x-games and good video games on any platform, but I had no interest in this title (prior to owning it).
I've been playing video games for over 20 years and even compensating for the state of technology at any given time, this may be, in my opinion, the all-time best game ever.
It is so much fun, so real-feeling...I always thought the "lines" (path a person chooses through the course) were a commentator's concept, but with this game you see them, feel them.
It is incredible.Makes me feel like I can actually do the tricks in real life.I hopped on my son's skateboard in the living room and nearly killed myself as a result.
Graphics, gameplay, sound, music, cohesiveness, variety and options, controls, concept, execution, this game has it all.
Hopefully some day I will be bored with this game and can go back and finish Warcraft 3 and Max Payne which I had recently bought and was playing on the PC before this.

Like so many of us that have been counting down the days, I picked up my copy early upon its arrival at the store--and probably like a few of you, I was afraid there was simply no way that they could emulate the marvel of the original...oh how happy I am that my fears existed only in my head.

After 16 hours, I've completed the game so I'll tell you why I feel the sequel has just bested the original God of War.Obviously the first is the amazing storyline that not only picks up right where the first installment left off, but it develops the story a considerable amount with regard to the history of the gods (especially Zeus), the titans, and most excitingly, the past great war between both (I'll give nothing away but suffice it to say that the curious might want to grab a decent Greek Mythology handbook to look up alot of the names associated with the new faces).

The visuals are nothing but spellbinding, as we have come to expect no less considering our first experience with "the ghost of Sparta."The game designers have employed the elements of all the seasons in implementing the rich, colorful world through which Kratos must trek. An especial care to detail has been taken to ensure that no single part of the game stands out when compared to the others so that the entire God of War world seems an endless tapestry of rich colors and dark hues befitting our hero's purpose.Very simply every image, background, character, and enemy (the look of Cyclops, for example, is dramatically improved) is painstakingly detailed and beautifully produced on screen.

Only a small word about the musical score will be necessary. That the original God of War won Best Original Musical Score in 2005 isn't surprising...what will be surprising is if GOW2 fails to pick it up again later in the year.Beautiful vocals, percussion and strings strongly complement all the eye candy. But again, no surprises here...we simply expected it.

The gameplay is also much more fluid. For example, you don't have to wait for the slow climb up ladders anymore, you are now able to heave yourself up in quick jumps. Moreover, you are now able to use your swords to climb under cliffs (very cool by the way) making Kratos much more versatile. Some of the new "gadgets" include Icharus wings (earned later in the game) that allow Kratos to glide over longer distances, a device for slowing time, and [at least] 2 new "other" weapons besides your chain-swords (I had an option for three but only procured two in my first time through the game).

And finally, my personal favorite...the in-game movies. This is where the history of the titans and the titan/olympian war literally come into view.Saving just one early close-up shot of Kratos' face, every normal- and high-resolution movie looks fantastic. After unlocking and watching them following the game's completion, it will be evident to all that a great deal more effort went into the production of these little treasures compared to its predecessor with regard to both overall length and depth of storyline.

CONCLUSION:
Superb visuals, addicting gameplay and action, wonderful story, and compelling characters. Overall, my recommendation is this: if you're a God of War fan already, you've already bought it...if you like a good action game, you'll find none better (including the original), and if you're curious about all the hype, then rent it (my guess is, afterwards, you will have bought it within two days)...this one makes it hard for any to be disappointed.

5 out of 5--absolutely no doubt about it.

I have been a big fan of hack and slash and the God of War series is on the top of the list. GOW3 was great but nothing too special overall for me. GoS on the other hand blew me away! It just amazes me how ReadyatDawn is able to produce such a game on the 5 year ols PSP engine. The game is beautiful and runs amazingly smooth with a lot of stuff going on. You just need to see for yourself. This game blows away CoO, which was my favorite PSP game until GoS arrived. I dare say this game looks better then most of the PS2 games out there and even better then some PS3 games! Its that great!

Aside from the awesome graphics, the gameplay and story is great and appropriate as a side adventure. The length, which was lacking on CoO is extended and will set you back around 10 hours. What else can I say but get this game NOW if you are remotely interested. You can thank me later.

Dante's Inferno Review

Dante's Inferno
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Make no mistake, this game is pure guilty pleasure, hack and slash, dim the lights and camp out on the couch, eye candy goodness. It's LOOSELY based on the poem and isn't about to change your life in any profound way, unless you really love graphics and design work I guess. They basically use the structure of Hell that Dante established and build their own descent from there. The thing about their design that I am absolutely beside myself about is that they had Wayne Barlowe doing the concept. The man is amazing and has basically built his career out of conceptualizing Hell and you can find his books of Hell re-imagined on Amazon as well, which I highly recommend if you're a Dante (the actual poet) fanatic like myself.

His work here is amazing and the graphics are astounding. My only complaint, really, is that you can't actually angle the camera yourself. Which tends to become a bit of a nuisance at best when you're trying to admire the terrific landscape and at worst when you're trying to fight and your enemy moves out of sight. Having the camera adjust itself can really become a thorn in your side at times, but overall, it's an issue I'm willing to overlook in light of all I enjoy about the game. As they've stated multiple times on their production videos, they use a pretty high framerate (believe it's 60 fps) and it definitely shows. The flow is fantastically smooth and seamless. The animated clips are a bit on the cheese side, but the CGI cutsceens are pretty high quality. They also don't make the mistake, like a lot of current games do, of overburdening the game with these cutsceens. For me, they can become a major hindrance to the game's flow very quickly, as I like to play my games, not watch a glorified cartoon. Luckily, Dante does not suffer from this in the least.

The graphics and sound in this game are truly impressive, however. Honestly, the attention to detail is simply fantastic. The walls made of trapped sinners, Minos shouting out verdicts in the background as you approach, the screams of sinners, a man calls out for Ulysses in the bowels of Charon's boat, the detailed backgrounds such as a giant skull spitting out the corpses of the damned at the start. It's simply on a massive, grand scale and if you've ever read Dante and lived to see his Hell brought to the big screen... you will NOT be disappointed playing this video game. From the second I heard they had Barlowe I knew they were interested in the details and the audio and visuals couldn't be more captivating. The soundtrack, which is included with the PS3 version, is really quite great as well. Sets the moods perfectly and makes the whole experience engrossing and just a lot of fun... which is what games are supposed to be.

Gameplay / Controls are easy to learn and have a pretty good configuration. You upgrade your Scythe and Holy Cross talent trees to learn new combos and I'm very pleased with the ease of picking up these new combinations. Again, some games can really go overboard in this area, to the point where you basically have to pause and look up the combo sequence every time you want to execute it. None of that here and I'm exceedingly glad for it, because once they become too convoluted, it really hinders gameplay, flow and inevitably spoils my fun. Along with your two upgradeable trees, you have Magic talents, the ability to dodge, block and jump. While those might seem like minor options, recently playing Darksiders and having to be perfectly still to block, or else it DASHES you across the room, was a HUGE inconvenience and annoyance to me. As well, being able to jump, as silly as it seems, can break a game if it's not an option. I hate feeling restricted in my character's movement and after playing a no-jumping-allowed Demon's Souls (one of PS3's BEST games hands down) for more hours than I wish to reveal, it's nice to have jumping back on the controller.

Also, having come from playing copious amounts of Demon's Souls, I think it's fair to mention this game has pretty frequent save points and when you die, you restart at the beginning of whatever encounter you were on. So, if you're at the boss and die, you start over at the boss, not back at the save point. I know for some it's more of a nuisance to be dropped off at the start of the level / last save point after death, so rest assured, you pick up essentially where you left off / failed and get right back to it.

Last, but not least, this is definitely not for kids. Violence and Nudity are basically the name of the game here, so if you have concerns regarding either of those two things, either don't bother or rent first.

Viewlarger. Scythe Combat
To vanquish the foes you encounter on your journey through the hell of Dante's Inferno, you must learn to wield Death's Scythe with precision and deadly force. Mix light attacks with heavy attacks to create combos, then incorporate jumps and grabs to add another layer to your combat. With dodging and Holy Cross moves thrown into the mix, you can truly become a force to be reckoned with. Without using all of your combative skills and techniques, there is no hope of ever reaching Beatrice.

Holy Powers
During your journey, you may collect magic abilities for use against the legions of hell. When you perform the Righteous Path power you make a dash attack and leave a trail of icy shards in your wake. With Martyrdom you sacrifice health and mana to deal a heavy amount of damage to surrounding enemies. Divine Armor regenerates your health and protects you from damage. If successful, you will become the beast's new master. Now use its awesome power to pulverize enemies and complete tasks that require a beast's strength.

God of War Review

Do you remember that thrill when you played Devil May Cry for the first time? That experience that was familiar in some aspects but so different in a completely bad ass way?The opening moments of God of War exceed that thrill. In fact it brings to mind what comedian Dane Cook would call a BAMF.I'll let you do the math.

The opening moments are filled with creatures both small and large that you can effortlessly kill, the game subtly teaching you the mechanics. But all of that is just setup for a truly epic first boss fight against the Hydra that not only kicks the game into high gear, but also is better than practically any "end boss" fights of most games. With context sensitive button pushes, the game incorporates a cinematic experience into your fighting.By pushing buttons at the right time, you are dodging, climbing and killing each Hydra head thrown at you.It is intense and immensely satisfying.Never before have I felt this immersion in a video game.Instead of watching a cutscene of Kratos finishing a Hydra, YOU are doing it.You are swinging off its nose, jamming your blades into its eyes.It is awesome.

Graphically, the game excels.I have been constantly surprised recently with the graphic quality of PS2 games.God of War is almost seamless. The game moves from gameplay, to cutscene, to gameplay, level to level without a load screen. In fact, with the exception of the initial load, I don't remember ever seeing a load screen. It is beautiful to watch, gruesome to play and just fantastic.

Sound-wise, the game also is gold.It has a fully orchestrated soundtrack that fits perfectly with the Greek time period. In fact, the soundtrack is available for a free download if you buy the game and its definitely worth it to those who like this kind of music. The voice work is well done and the lip synching for once matches perfectly.

For all of the graphic prowess, there are some problems. The biggest of which is a kind of scanning problem. When the camera moves, sometimes the areas get...squiggly?...I don't how to explain it, but there's lines moving through the game because it can't handle it.There's also a little bit of slowdown when battles get hectic.Neither of these are major problems but it does detract from what really are wonderful graphics.

The camera also generally shows the best angle for the action. You can't control the camera, it's preset like Devil May Cry.There are a couple instances, however, where you can get sandwiched between two or more huge brutes and you can't see yourself because of the camera. It can be incredibly annoying when it happens but it is so rare that it isn't much of a complaint.

Finally, the game isn't too long. It's a 10-15 hour game depending on how well you play and what difficulty setting you choose. They actually had to cut the game down to get it done on time. You can check out the levels and monsters that were cut after finishing the game.Along with the shortness, there aren't many bosses. In fact, there's only three. But man, when they throw a boss at you, they really throw a boss at you.

Note of warning:This game is definitely rated M.The violence and gore is in your face as there are decapitations, breaking necks, wings ripped off, people cut in half, violence against women, etc.And there's nudity and sexual situations.Copious breast shots follow suit.

I can't recommend this game enough. If you are a fan of action games, this game redefines the stylish action Devil May Cry heralded back in the day.Playing as Kratos gives you the same bad ass feeling Dante did, only God of War ramps this up to the extremes.Play this game, you'll be glad you did.

UPDATE:I don't know if there's anyone out there who hasn't played this game yet, but if you haven't, why not?At 19.99, this game is a complete steal! There is a sequel on the way, coming out on the PS2 in early 2007.

God Of War Collection Review

God Of War Collection

When I converted from XBox to Playstation a few years back, God of War was one of the first games I bought that was exclusive to the PS2.I've always loved Greek mythology, so I suppose that may be part of the reason why I quickly fell in love with the tragic story of Kratos. After finishing GoW1, I eagerly awaited the release of God of War 2.It was truly amazing that the PS2 was capable of producing such beautiful graphics. The story was even better than the original, and it left me hanging for part three in this wonderful franchise.

I've been patiently waiting for God of War 3 to hit the shelves, so I was quite surprised when I found out that the original two titles in the series were being remastered in high-definition for play on the PS3.I got my copy home, opened it, and loaded it onto my PS3.I'll just tell you right now that ALL of the content from the first two games is on one Blu-ray disc, including all of the extra features from disc 2 of GoW2.

So, is this worth an upgrade????? The answer is a resounding YES!!!!If you are a fan of the series, then you owe it to yourself to get this title and enjoy all of the improvements that have been made to both games.First of all, they have both had an overhaul in the graphics department. While GoW1 still doesn't quite measure up to the latest PS3 graphics standards, it is a big improvement over the old PS2 version. The game now fills the screen on a widescreen TV, and there is a noticable difference in the details of the graphics. The sound has also been improved and adds to the overall enjoyment of playing back through one of the greatest games ever created. You will also notice that the rumble feature is present, and there is quite a nice trophy collection for each game. Some of the trophies are quite funny. For instance, in GoW1, you can earn a trophy by dying so many times that the game offers you the ability to move to an easier setting. It was fun dying over and over just to earn this trophy. It's been a long time since I played GoW1, but it was amazing how much of the game I could remember.

The storyline for both games is completely the same, but the improvement in the graphics and sound is well worth the cheap purchase price for both games. This set should keep you busy trying to earn all of the trophies while you wait to get you paws on GoW3 in March 2010.And just to make things a little better, the demo that was available at E3 for God of War 3 is now available to anyone who purchases this collection. And let me tell you, the demo will leave you waiting in anticipation for the arrival of what will surely be the best game of 2010.In my humble opinion, God of War is one of the most enjoyable game series I've ever played.OK, ok, before I close out, I'll come clean. It's just so much more enjoyable ramming your blade down the throat of a minotaur and watching the blood gush out in high definition.Or maybe grabbing one of the bad guys and pulling their body in half with a mighty torrent of HD blood going everywhere.Yes, it does bring a smile to one's face to relive such great gaming moments in the clarity that only HD can provide.Whether you are a longtime fan of the franchise as I am, or if you are new to the God of War trilogy, you MUST get this new collection.I guarantee that you will NOT be disappointed.
