Silent Scope Complete Review

Silent Scope Complete

Reviewers have been tepid about this title, but reveiwers do not play videogames the way many of us do.For reviewers, videogames are serious business. For me, and, I would imagine, many others, games are supposed to be simple fun.
Silent Scope provides oodles of it.Not much thinking, just fast, fast, tight, well designed action, with a cool scope-in, scope-out dynamic that actually maybe does require some strategy.A classic of the level of House of The Dead 1& 2.I play without a gun, and with just the controller, it's a blast.
It would be worth the money if all you got was one game, but you get THREE FULL ARCADE GAMES, PLUS BONUS GAMES.Most gun games suffer from low longevity, but it would be very hard to imagine anyone finishing this title in under 30 hours.
Very, very addictive and cool.Varied action, humour, branching paths...
Sure, the graphics are not at par with the best of XBOX, but they're glitch free, and designed with a wink and a chuckle, and some environments actually look pretty good and do contain OK polygon counts and that.
Bottom line, if you're tired of games that are so complicated they feel like jobs, so complicated they lack focus and direction, get this now.
- P.S. - I set difficulty at 6 which offers optimal "resistance"- I recommend doing that and leaving everything else at default values, except for turning on auto-save, and turning off branching paths in Silent Scope 1 (the surprise of which path you'll randomly get adds to re-play.)Each game has its own options set.

SEGA House of the Dead 2 Review

SEGA House of the Dead 2
Average Reviews:

First off, you should know that this game has practically no replay value. However, the first time you play it is a blast. It says that you can play with a buddy, fighting the forces of evil, but this is an awful way to play considering that one of the players has to use the keyboard to move the crosshair. That makes it virtually impossible for you to beat the final boss, because he moves so fast. Also, you should definitley not play if you get tired easily. You have to click the mouse like a million clicks a second, just to kill a regular boss.you can eaily get carple tunnel syndrome from playing this game too much.I found that I had to pause the game a couple of times, just to let my wrist rest for twenty minutes.I would give 4/5 stars on graphics.I see myself as a very skilled gamer, but even I had much trouble defeating the final boss.I probably spent a total of 2 hours playing this game. The game is not very realistic, but it is not supposed to be.I really liked how there are quite a number of different paths that you can take throughout the game.My mom really didn't like me playing this game...oh well. So, I gave it 3 stars because of its short gameplay, and inevitable pain, but i only bought it for 5 bucks at a store, so it was well worth it.Its not really a bad game at all.I say if you see it for $10 or less get it, but if you don't, get Time Splitters cheap on ebay.

Gunblade NY: Special Air Assault Force and L.A Machineguns: Rage of the Machines - Arcade Hits Pack Review

Gunblade NY: Special Air Assault Force and L.A Machineguns: Rage of the Machines - Arcade Hits Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sega has followed their Wii ports of Ghost Squad and House of the Dead 2 & 3 with another pair of arcade light gun games, and I couldn't be happier. In Gunblade NY and LA Machine Guns, you fly through the respective cities using machine guns to blow up robotic enemies. The enemies are a real challenge because they take a lot of hits, frequently jump away from you, and fight back aggressively. The fun never turns to frustration and the dynamic movement of the camera and enemies ensures that things stay fresh longer than in other light gun games.("Light gun" is a little inaccurate, since the arcade games used infrared pointers just like the Wii remote.)

Gunblade NY and LA Machine Guns originally ran on arcade hardware more powerful than a Sega Saturn but less powerful than a Dreamcast. The Wii versions' graphics run at a higher framerate and screen resolution, but they maintain the arcade games' blocky characters. The low polygon count may turn off some players, but I'm glad Sega preserved the games' aesthetics rather than letting a team less talented than the original attempt to update the game on a low budget. These are high-quality games that remain fun with minimal updates. The games look crisp and run smoothly, they're about as fun as you remember them, and online rankings and a small set of unlockables have also been added to increase the longevity. If you long for games from a time when "arcade" meant "fast-paced and high-quality" instead of "budget downloadable game," you'll be happy with this.

With some luck, Sega will release Virtua Cop 3 next!

House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return Review

House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is a no-brainer. If you were ever a fan of the House of the Dead in the arcade, then you have to dish the $30 to get it. If you're as bad a shot as I was in the arcade, you'll make up the money in about 10 minutes worth of play. :)

If you've never played the game but are looking for a new title to use your snazzy Wii Zapper on, then this is also the game for you. It's super responsive and accurate, and gives you lots of satisfaction based on the sound effects and gore.

For those expecting something new and fantastic for the Wii release, you may be disappointed. The graphics are the same as the tried and true versions, and the voice overs are still the very poorly-acted (but admittedly nostalgic) ones you love to hate.

Parents, fear not. You can "censor" the level of gore if you're still OK with your child playing this type of game. (It's rated M for mature, i.e. 17+). You can make the blood be green instead of red, and also minimize the amount of gore in the options menu. Accessory-wise, you don't need the Wii Zapper or other comparable shooting peripheral. It works fine with the controllers as they come out of the box, but since the arcade version had guns, it's nice to have this extra.

Here's what you get with the game: House of the Dead 2, with arcade and original modes, boss mode and training mode. You start with the basics, and as you get further and further into these modes, you unlock more and more things. House of the Dead 3 has arcade mode and extreme mode, with the same ability to unlock more and more as you go through the game.

The only minus for this game (which still doesn't affect my rating of it) is the occasional lag you may experience during zombie-intense shooting moments (maybe once or twice during an entire start-to-finish game). It doesn't affect game play, but I'm sure some of you avid gamers out there would find it very annoying.

Overall, getting 2 games in one for 30 bucks is a great deal, and I'm a very, very happy camper that my arcade fave has made a return for Wii.

Ghost Squad Review

Ghost Squad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is a lot of fun to play, and I would highly recommend it.If you decide to pick it up, here are a few quick tips that may be helpful:

1.) I don't know who at Nintendo came up with the crazy idea that the trigger on the front of the zapper (i.e., "B" button) should be the firing trigger, but this game follows that trend when you select the zapper mode. However, if you choose the Wiimote + Nunchuk mode, it reverses the buttons. In this mode, the button located where a trigger would normally be (i.e., "Z" button) becomes the trigger, and the "B" button becomes the action button. It's a lot more fun to play this way.So, if you're using a zapper, don't pick the zapper mode.Pick the Wiimote + Nunchuk mode.

2.) Although this game supports 480p, it does NOT support widescreen. If you play in this mode, everything looks a little stretched out, although it's tolerable. The gameplay itself doesn't look too bad.You really notice it the most when octagon shaped dialog items appear on the screen.

3.) If you have a large TV, this game requires you to be REALLY far back in order to properly calibrate the aim.For my 57" TV, I have to be about 12' back before it will allow me to aim directly at the calibration targets. If you change the TV from widescreen mode to 4:3 mode, it helps a little with the distance.

As a side note, once you do calibrate the aim properly, the aiming is extremely accurate provided that you have a large TV and are using the zapper. In the arcade game, the crosshairs are always jumping around a little, which makes the sniper sessions a little difficult (in a frustrating way, not in a good way). With a large TV and a zapper, the sniper sessions are much easier.

Call of Duty: World at War Review

Call of Duty: World at War
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am tired of World War II shooters. They clutter the market and a lot of them just aren't that fun, in my opinion. This game is an exception to that. The Wii version is basically the same package you would get on the other consoles but I'll be the first to say is the PS3 and XBox 360 versions of this game are superior on pretty much every front that I've seen.In fact, much of my review could be applied to the other versions of the console. My roommate owns the XBox 360 version and it pretty much wows me on every front. If you have the choice, choose one of the more powerful versions, but I'm not disappointed with the Wii version, with only a few exceptions.

Call of Duty covers multiple campaigns in the WWII.At this point I've played about 33% of the single player campaign and several well-spent hours on multi-player.I'm hooked. The game is very well presented with quality cut-scenes and video with old-school WWII footage.Sound is well done and the graphics are very complex, although textures tend to be low-res at times. Some people have complained about the frame rate, but I honestly have not seen any serious frame rate issues.Control is very well done, accurate, and smooth and offers a variety of control schemes to select from, but I prefer the default controls. The game supports the Wii Zapper, which I own and really have no intention to try.It isn't that the game's support for the Wii Zapper peripheral is bad, but more that I think the Wii Zapper is a plastic hunk of junk.

The story focuses on the Pacific theater and German theaters and players will play as a US Marine for part of the game and a Russian allied soldier and sniper in the other part. The Pacific theater portion of the game is fairly formulaic and tells a generic story about a marine which doesn't do much to engage me in terms of story, but the Russian half of the game has gripped me.I was actually disappointed when I switched back to the Marine simply because the Russians had much cooler dialogue. That, plus Russian accents are pretty much rockin', even if people do associate them with communists... not to say Marines aren't cool either, because they are quite awesome too... I digress. What's nice is seeing something a little different.

Like every other WWII shooter out there, this game wallows in a palette of brown, grey, red, and other "World War II" colors. The Pacific campaign has frequent patches of jungle vegetation, which is surprisingly complex. The Russian campaign is more focused on urban and rural combat in a traditional European setting.Levels lead the player along a fair amount and don't give you a lot of room to stray, though some areas do feel more open than others.

Multi-player is probably one of the strongest aspects of this game and will provide a lot of replay value.Up to eight players can compete in death-match and team death-match.Sadly, there is no capture the flag, defend the hill, or anything like that, but what is offered is very solid. In multi-player you can earn experience, level your character up, and gain upgrades. There appear to be a lot of things to unlock, especially if you can complete all of the challenges. In fact, just attempting to complete all of the challenges will probably take someone at least 20 hours.Once a group of players are brought together to play, the game keeps you together until you decide you want to leave the group. This is nice, because there is no need to wait for several minutes between matches just hoping to find players.I really like the multi-player.Except for one thing.FRIEND CODES!Yes.Friend Codes are back and as much of a pain as ever. Please Nintendo, just abandon the friend codes concept, because it really hurts online play. Also, there is no voice chat.I recommend using Ventrillo or some other internet chat service if playing with friends.

The Good:
+++ Quality FPS controls. The pointer controls are smooth and accurate.
+++ The game is not bogged down with gimmicky Wii-waggle controls, a problem many other Wii FPS titles suffer.

+++ Excellent sound effects.Battlefield explosions sound nice and squad members chatter back and forth.
+++ Decent story line split across two campaigns.
+++ The Russian levels are simply awesome and full of atmosphere.
+++ Best online play offering that any Nintendo Wii title has delivered so far.
+++ The game is challenging, even on the easiest level, but also provides a good checkpoint system.

The Bad:
--- Mission objectives are sometimes unclear in single player.
--- Cliched Marine heroes storyline that's been done over and over. The story feels forced, although the voice acting is well done.
--- Friend codes. They're not friendly, nor fun.
--- Limited multi-player modes when compared to the other consoles.

I will say one final thing about this game.It is violent, which should be obvious since it's about WWII.The language is crude and even vulgar at times, probably accurately representing the things you would hear or say on a battle field.People die, and a lot of them die very horribly. This game is not appropriate for children and was rated Mature for a good reason.I strongly urge parents to reconsider any decision to purchase this title for their younger children.

To sum it up, Call of Duty: World at War is a quality first person shooter. The Wii version lives in the shadow of it's PS3 and XBox 360 brothers, but is still a great game. This is probably the best all-around FPS title available on the Wii at the time of this writing.Buy it on any console and have some fun saving the world from facism.

Reload: Target Down Review

Reload: Target Down
Average Reviews:

I received Reload for the Wii as a gift.As a life-long gun enthusiast and video game player, I was totally stoked to play this. This game has tons of different types of target shooting, ranging from simple target ranges, to full on police training levels, even shooting from a moving vehicle in a few levels.Skeet shooting gets a bit unrealistic sometimes. There are just too many clays in the air at a time sometimes.Still fun though. It has some of the best known civilian and military hardware to choose from.I can play this with the kids in the room too. There is no blood and guts like so many recent shooting games.Nothing ever dies. You lose by not scoring high enough, by hitting too many of the wrong targets, or by missing too many targets that shoot paintballs at you. It's very pretty for a Wii game as well.My friend that gave this to me told me it was only $20.A fun to play, nice looking target shooting game for only $20? Sign me up.I would've bought this for myself even if my friend hadn't bought it for me.
