Heroes of Might & Magic 3 Complete Review

One day, I recalled fond memories of playing Heroes, so I checked out its availability online. Sure enough, there it was, cheap as dirt and readily available. It got here in about a week, and I've wasted countless irretrievable hours of my life since that day. How can I quantify the value of such an experience? Five stars, my friends, five stars. Besides, no one will probably ever read this review...

Heroes of Might and Magic IV Complete Review

Heroes of Might and Magic IV Complete
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the complete set of Heroes of Might and Magic 4 with both expansion packs: The Gathering Storm and The Winds of War.

This is thought to be the weakest game in the series by some and possibly the second best by others. Most people who play the HOMM series agree the 3rd is by far the best.

That being said, Heroes 4 is a pretty good game; capable of consuming the hours of your life at huge chunks at a time. The emphasis in this installment moved from the heroes armies to the actual heroes themselves. Moving from the side lines to the battle, the heroes make yet another piece on the battlefield to conquer and strategize.

The two expansions are, unfortunately, some of the worst expansions ever made for a game. At the time, the parent company 3DO was going under and needed to make some quick cash so they pumped out these two expansions asap. Missing any sort of real animations or plausible story which made the series to this point, most serious Heroes fans skipped over these two titles.

Guild Wars Nightfall Review

Guild Wars Nightfall
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nightfall takes place in the land of Elonia, the starting area of which is a large island. The story follows a group of people that are concerned with their leader's involvement with demons and what that alliance could mean for their land.

In Guild Wars, players have can use eight skills from a pool of several hundred possible skills. Skills can only be changed in towns, where other players meet and accept quests. Each character has a primary and secondary occupation or class. Each class has a set of skills. With the ability to pick skills from two classes, Guild Wars offers an endless array of skills to each player.

Nightfall adds the ability to control up to three AI Heroes per player, out of a total of 15 heroes. The player is able to customize each hero's skills, skill points, 2 distinct sets of armor, dye that armor and give each hero weapons which can be customized as well.

Also, the player can control which skills can be use by the Hero AI by placing the skill in order, from left to right, and deactivating skills so that those skills can only be used when the players initiates them.

Shortly after Nightfall came out, templates were introduced. Templates allow players to save skills, skill points, armor, and items to a local file that can be reloaded for later use or exchanged with other players.

Another addition was the ability to save skill sets. These sets can also be exchanged with other players by a long ASCI code. Both of these additions, while not specifically part of Nightfall, further enhance game play.

Nightfall uses a pleasant mix of story driven indoor and outdoor missions to tell the background of the lands. The missions range from the basic slay type to more interesting infiltration. One mission, in which the player crashes a party and must perform several amusing activities, was a wonderful surprise, very enjoyable and very fun to replay.

As a whole, Nightfall contains everything that Prophecies has and expands upon it nicely. Nightfall also has a nice mix of indoor and outdoor missions. The only draw back to the outdoor scenery is that they limited it to a savanna grasslands style.

The extras that this boxed set includes are nice for people that are heavy into Guild Wars or curious about what goes into making the game. Most will find those items of little value. Think of DVDs with a huge art section with hundreds of sketches that were used to create the movie. If that amount of detail interests you, then the extras included in this boxed set should as well.

With more player control of the battle through the use of fully customized Heroes, strong story driven missions, beautiful scenery, hundred of skills and several classes, Nightfall is the best part of the Guild Wars world.

Heroes of Might and Magic V: Hammers of Fate Review

Heroes of Might and Magic V: Hammers of Fate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It has become my way to write reviews about the new things in games, in particular how new races play.Having recently bought Hammer of Fate, I figured I would do the same again.

This expansion finishes what Heroes 5 started, i.e. the creation of a great Heroes game in 3D.5 was a fun and enmeshing game that was almost as good if not AS good as Heroes 3, the benchmark of the series. Now, with the inclusion of this expansion, it is PROBABLY better.

By this I mean the expansion has the long awaited random map generator which makes for insane re-playability.It includes the caravans from Heroes 4 which means you no longer need extra heroes to run from castle to castle trying to keep one hero with a full army.Caravans also allow a town to buy from the numerous autonomous creature buildings you mark, a great addition.

Now let's move on to the new race that is a... interesting addition. If you care enough it is easy to look up creature stats online and see attack power and defense and all but I will give a general descript.

When I first started playing this race, I hated it.The primary start creature is the Defender, possibly the WORST start creature in the game. They have weak attack, health and speed. In their basic form Defenders do 1-1 damage. That means AT BEST you will do the damage of the number you have in the stack.50 Defenders will do 50 or less damage... probably less.No big deal right?Peasants for the Knights are weak but with archers it's no biggy.Well... the next unit is called Spearwielders and they are awful too. With a piddly 4(?) shots and weak damage these shooters will be out of spears long before you reduce an enemy enough to send in the Defenders. And, as most players know, most early games come down to the 1st 2nd and 3rd tier of units.Which brings up the Bear Riders.

Bear Riders are supposed to be the fast attackers of the early Dwarf game. They are hopeless at it.Again, lack of speed at attack power plus only 25 hit points means that, unlike griffons, you can't hold back and wait for a certain kill. The enemy will more likely reach you first. Thus, early game can be a rough run for Dwarfs.

However, something funny happens when Dwarfs upgrade their creatures.Defenders become Shieldguard and now their attack is better, they are a great counter to fast movers like Paladins and they have a decent turn of speed.Spearwielders become Skirmishers and double their shots.Even the near worthless Bear Riders become Black Bear Riders whose special actually knocks back enemy units and stops a counter attack. From being the 3 worst units in the game, the Dwarf 3rd tier units are now some of the best. This trend continues through all the Dwarf units, with the exclusion of Fire Dragons, which rock from the start.Thanes, tier 6, are pretty poor.Their weak attack is supplemented by a lightning attack so they always kill twice what the computer says but besides being meat shields they lack punch.Warlords move fast, strike fast and do a great single range attack.Brawlers...bad.Berserkers have a no retaliation attack that tears through weaker units. And Runic Priests are ok but Patriarchs are better. And the Dwarfs grow fast.REAL fast. All their creatures populate in unheard of numbers so players can afford to lose a few more.

As an added bonus, the Dwarf special ability, Rune making, gives Dwarf army's a dangerous unpredictability. The Rune of Speed gets even the slowest creature across the map in one turn. There is a number of others that give attack bonuses, revive creatures and shield them from attack. You can't trust a Shieldguard to stay on his side of the map and only attack once.In fact, I would say this ability is probably the best CREATURE COMBAT special ability of any race, though that is arguable.

Finally, the Dwarf town is the hardest to crack in the game yet. With numerous extra defense walls, rune mines under the wall and a special that puts as many as 2K extra Shieldguard in your army, chances are any army will take losses in excess of the gain when attacking a well garrisoned town. And this defensiveness plays well to the Dwarf army, which can sit back, let the towers do their thing and kill any flyers that come over the top.

So... The Dwarfs.

Fun?Sure.Fire and Magma Dragons stumble around the map with great sinister and make for good times late in game.Dwarf Heroes add a great unpredictability to the game as well.

Powerful? Not entirely.Until a player upgrades his creatures even wild armies will be difficult to kill and that means slow recourses early in game.

Cheap? Not at all.To even stand a chance against other players Dwarfs need to buy TONS of extra buildings and upgrades. If anything, the Dwarf early game is deadly to Dwarfs,

A good addition?Absolutely.Weaknesses aside, once the Dwarfs get rolling, they are a powerful enemy.

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Heroes Review

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Heroes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Naruto Ultimate Ninja Heroes isn't, essentially, a simplified version of Naruto Ultimate Ninja 2 as reviewers over the internet have been reporting. Sure, it has levels from that game and, in someways, is similar to it but there is enough things different in it to make it its' own game.First and foremost, it has team-based battles which is a welcome changeup from what is normal to the Ultimate Ninja games. Depending on what combinations of characters you use, special team-based skills can be had. There's new animations for your characters' special techniques & whatnot. You can battle your friends wirelessly anytime or anywhere you like.

There's a downside to the game, though. The load times for the game are a smidgen long(that is, if you're the anxious type that wants to get right in there & fight- they last ten to fifteen seconds long. I've seen longer with other games, like Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition & Mortal Kombat Unchained. To me, it is tolerable.). There's no story to speak of(unlike the Japanese game that was released last year in Japan, which was loaded with RPG-esque material). The gameplay, although easier to grasp, pretty much relies on one button. Depending on which way you push on the directional pad when pushing the button results in tweaking or modifying your move of attack.

Overall, CyberConnect2 delivers a satisfying Naruto fighting experience on the PSP. In some ways, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Heroes is a more blisteringly intense game than its' PS2 bretheren. Not only that, it looks absolutely awesome on the PSP.

City of Heroes and City of Vilians: Good vs. Evil Edition Review

City of Heroes and City of Vilians: Good vs. Evil Edition
Average Reviews:

The submitter below me is wrong, you only need to pay a single subscription fee to play both City of Heroes and City of Villains, all you need to do is set up your account and add the code for the second game to the current game once you've set up the first. Two awesome games, one 15 dollar subscription fee. NCSoft support is awesome for helping customers sort this out.

I'm not really a fan of MMOs but I have to say I've been continually impressed with the City of franchise providing innovative and fun play, interesting character archetypes, and probably the best character builder in any game. I'm also impressed with their continued dedication to free game updates instead of paid box updates for new content.

With the addition of Inventions in April, 2007 you really begin to feel like a super hero or a devious villain, able to craft new enhancements to make your powers more robust and awesome. Veterans awards also make me feel appreciated as a customer for my continued play of the game by rewarding me a new costume piece, or item for every 3 months of play. (I'm at 18 now ^_^).

If you're looking for a fun game, low on gore violence (I consider it to be PG-13), that teaches good lessons for kids (especially in city of heroes), and lets you play out a childhood dream of being a good guy or a bad guy, this is definitely it.

Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East Review

Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tribes of East is the final chapter of the Heroes of Might and Magic V trilogy.Even though this expansion was not highly anticipated as its predecessor, Hammers of Fate, it was generally better received by the HMM5 internet community for competency issues.Ubisoft definitely put their best foot forward to ensure that all of the glitches were ironed out before releasing a buggy product (contrary to the original HMM5).

The GOOD!

* TOE IS A STANDALONE PRODUCT - This is a very convenient installation feature that allows you to install the product without owning any of the previous HMM5 products. No annoying prerequisite installations to worry about.

* TOE DOES NOT REQUIRE THE DISC TO RUN - Another convenient installation feature that allows you to launch the game with the DVD absent in your disc drive (Be warned: This feature could be unintended by Ubisoft as it was not advertised on the packaging and could be removed in a future patch).

* A NEW FACTION AND HERO - A strong majority of HMM5 fans were anticipating and begging for the arrival of the nomadic and savage faction known as the Orcs.Their Stronghold hosts a diverse array of units consisting of Goblins, Centaur, Warriors, Shamans, Slayers, Wyverns and Cyclopes.Under the command of an Orcish Hero (The Barbarian) these units can utilize a Bloodrage ability. This ability is accumulated in correlation to the amount of damage that unit inflicts and as a result will give the Orc units access to additional abilities (ie. Cyclops obtains a Fear Aura when obtaining Bloodrage level 3).

* AN ALTERNATE UPGRADE TO EVERY UNIT - This is a highly celebrated feature of ToE that adds a whole new dimension to the HMM5 gameplay.Whenever a creature dwelling is upgraded in a town, the player can choose between two different upgrades for the creature stack.(For example, after the player upgrades the Lich Dwelling in the Necropolis, he/she now has the choice of upgrading a Lich into an Arch Lich or a Lich Master.)As a result there are essentially 50% more creature types availible vastly opening the strategic diversity in a battle. In addition, there is also a "regrading" system allowing the player to interchange his/her units from one upgrade to the other.(For example, the player can pay to "regrade" a stack of Arch Liches into a stack of Lich Masters and vise versa so that the player is not forced to dedicate themselves to one upgrade type).

* SOME NEW INTERFACE FEATURES - Ubisoft did a fine job attuning their eyes and ears to consumer feedback by implementing some very convenient modifications to the user interface. The first one is the Kingdom Overview screen. This allows you to view hero and town details all in one screen without having to tediously cycle through all of them in the town view(a nice feature available in HMM3).In fact you can even access the build menus from here greatly speeding the pace for multiple town management. The second is a "Wait" button in battle menu, something that was highly desired since the original since HMM5.There are a couple more minor features in ToE that smooth out the gameplay but I do not wish to go into them all in great detail.

* PLENTY OF NEW ARTIFACTS, AND ARTIFACT SETS - The new artifacts offered by ToE are well balanced and function specific bestowing a very strategic use for each one. Many of the original artifacts along with some new ones are components of artifact sets. For each set artifact that the hero equips, he/she receives additional bonuses.(For Example: if the hero equips 2 artifacts from the Dragon Set he/she receives +1 to all hero parameters in addition to the original artifact bonuses. If the hero equips 4 artifacts from the Dragon Set he/she also receives +5 attack and all tier 7 creatures in the army receive +20 HP).

* THE GRAPHICS - Despite the 18 month disparity between the release dates of HMM5 and ToE, this game is not a hair more graphic intensive. This means that the consumers of HMM5 who met bare minimum specs will not have to purchase a whole new PC or upgrade their hardware just to run this game. However, Ubisoft did include a couple new display settings to tailor to wide screen monitors and laptops.

* GOOD MAP EDITOR CONTENT - ToE has a batch new terrain types along with a slew of new interactive and decorative doodads. This greatly diversifies the amount of creativity involved when creating a new map with the map editor.

* FAN CONTENT MATERIAL - This aspect alone illuminates the high level of appreciation that Ubisoft has for their online community.ToE comes included with a 300 plus page .pdf manual that breaks down the specifics for every creature statistic, spell formula, artifact bonus, and just about every concept involved with this game. This manual is pretty much the holy bible to the HMM5 series and is compiled by a very credible fan base known as the "Age of Heroes" community.

The BAD!

* NOT SO INTELLEGENT ARTIFICIAL "INTELLEGENCE" - This is the sole reason I gave ToE a 4-star rating in the "Fun" category. I feel that a competent A.I. is an imperative necessity for the turn-based strategy genre and throughout the whole HMM5 trilogy I have been pretty disappointed.I don't think this is the worst A.I. ever coded into a PC game but it is apparent that Ubisoft neglected to invest the proper amount of time in their A.I. so it can adapt, prioritize, and strategize in specific situations.I simply do not feel like the A.I. is a comparable opponent unless it is set on higher difficulties where it will flagrantly "cheat" (by receiving extra resources, experience, etc) making you lose that feeling of being in a battle of wits.

* NO NEW NEUTRAL CREATURES - With the release of every HMM expansion pack I always look forward to utilizing new mercenary creatures that are not affiliated with the 8 main factions.I was hoping that they'd bring back classics like the Medusas, Efreeti, Beholders, Basilisks, among many others.Don't hold your breath as there is not a single new neutral creature in ToE.

* TOO FEW NUMBER OF NEW MULTIPLAYER MAPS - With the creation of several new terrain types and the numerous addition of interactive doo-dads, I expected Ubisoft to work their creative team to the bone to pump out new maps and scenarios.Unfortunately that was not the case as there were only 4-6 new custom maps with this expansion. However, there are many 3rd party sites that provide multi-player maps and single player scenarios for download.

OVERALL: ToE has exceeded my expectations. If Ubisoft spends the proper time to revamp the A.I.(or maybe scrap it completely and start from square one) and release more multiplayer maps in a future patch then this will be a virtually flawless product. It is obvious that the numerous PROS of ToE outweigh the potentially rectifiable CONS.ToE's new features do a good job enhancing the gameplay mechanicsproviding a highly crafted but fluid turn-based strategy experience. For that reason, this game is worthy of the 5-star rating and is definitely worth buying for any casual or diehard fan of the Heroes of Might and Magic series. On the flipside, people new to the franchise might want to pick up a precursor title first.
