Guild Wars Trilogy and Eye of the North Scent on the Wind Limited Edition Print Bundle Review

Guild Wars Trilogy and Eye of the North Scent on the Wind Limited Edition Print Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this product on sale for $42 USD Before tax. That price bought me the 3 main games (the original prophecies, factions and nightfall) as well as the "Eye of the North" Expansion that apparently will have expandable / earnable content for Guild Wars 2 when it comes out.

The graphics are realistic and beautiful. They run easily on a mid-range computer. The gameplay is comprehensive and levelling system based on the premise that you don't want to have to play the game forever before getting into it (ie: max lvl 20). You have the option of jumping into the game and developping your character in a roleplaying scenario before moving onto PvP mode, or can create a lvl20 character specifically for PvP right away. This gives the player a lot of freedom to build different characters and try many combinations of professions without having to spend HOURS levelling those characters up. As well, the freedom to train and untrain skills and move your attribute pts around at will gives you the ability to specialize your character for whatever you wish and the peace of mind to know that you can redesign without recreating.

The little drawback this game does have is offset by the fact that you only have your initial purchase price and NO ONLINE FEES. This MMORPG is free to play online and I highly advise it to anyone who enjoys these types of games but disagrees with paying a montly subscription fee on top of your initial purchase price to do so.

I very much enjoy this game and recommend it.

Aion Wings Guild Wars Emote Review

Aion Wings Guild Wars Emote
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, I admit, it was a complete waste of money on what amounts to be an amusing little animation that contributes nothing to the gameplay itself (you can't even use it in any areas where killing creatures is an option) but what the heck: it amuses me, and the only other way to get it is to spend fifty-plus dollars on a game I don't even want.

Be advised, though: it doesn't do anything to your character that is useful on a gameplay level. It's purely asthetic.

EDIT: 3/2/2010

Guess what game I just bought?*sigh*Anyone wanna buy an Aion Wings Emote?

Guild Wars Factions Review

Guild Wars Factions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well I was surprised to see so many complaining reviews. I have been playing this game since the original came out...and I've played Factions since its debut.
So...let's see what all this fuss is about.

1. Bugs...
I have yet to be unable to complete any mission because of bugs. I did on one occasion become 'stuck' in the scenery. My team simply ported to a new location and all was well. However, I was not at all concerned...the game hasn't been out for a week yet. Did you expect perfection in 3 days? I find that unreasonable at best. Now if the problem were to persist say a month from now...well maybe then you'd have cause.

2. Oh Poor Me They Keep Beating Me Up.
Well yeah. probably because, like many players I've seen, you didn't bother to do any of the multitude of very high experience giving quests before you left the starter island. (Doing them all takes approximately 2 hours- I timed it) You just skipped em all and went straight for the primary 'get off the island' quests. I've seen many a level 10 on the mainland trying to get in a group. Then they complain they keep dying. Well of course you are. When I left the island I was level 17...from quests only, I didn't do any 'farming' and after about two quests outside the first 'mainland city' I was level 20 with both sets of bonus 15 attribute quests (available on the starter island). And so you know, I did all of this with one partner and the rest henchies.

3. They All Look Alike...
Yeah, but they did in the first Guild Wars too. What's your point? They added all new armors...new appearances for the new classes as well as the old ones. For a game that has thousands of players did you expect every one to look different?

4. PvP Is Cookie Cutter.
Yup. It is. But hey they all started somewhere. Each month finds a new PvP trend. Gale Warriors one month... Massive Minion bombing the next. So, if you wish to try a new tactic I suggest you gather a few friends and do it. There's nothing stopping you. I'm sure you've also had occasion to put down someone elses strategy so maybe the problem is inherent in the system. But nothing really prevents you from doing anything you want, provided you have good people willing to try.

In conclusion, considering the fact that this game basically has a yearly fee of about $45 (the price to buy the game)I think it's a worthy addition to any MMO fans collection.

Guild Wars Nightfall Review

Guild Wars Nightfall
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nightfall takes place in the land of Elonia, the starting area of which is a large island. The story follows a group of people that are concerned with their leader's involvement with demons and what that alliance could mean for their land.

In Guild Wars, players have can use eight skills from a pool of several hundred possible skills. Skills can only be changed in towns, where other players meet and accept quests. Each character has a primary and secondary occupation or class. Each class has a set of skills. With the ability to pick skills from two classes, Guild Wars offers an endless array of skills to each player.

Nightfall adds the ability to control up to three AI Heroes per player, out of a total of 15 heroes. The player is able to customize each hero's skills, skill points, 2 distinct sets of armor, dye that armor and give each hero weapons which can be customized as well.

Also, the player can control which skills can be use by the Hero AI by placing the skill in order, from left to right, and deactivating skills so that those skills can only be used when the players initiates them.

Shortly after Nightfall came out, templates were introduced. Templates allow players to save skills, skill points, armor, and items to a local file that can be reloaded for later use or exchanged with other players.

Another addition was the ability to save skill sets. These sets can also be exchanged with other players by a long ASCI code. Both of these additions, while not specifically part of Nightfall, further enhance game play.

Nightfall uses a pleasant mix of story driven indoor and outdoor missions to tell the background of the lands. The missions range from the basic slay type to more interesting infiltration. One mission, in which the player crashes a party and must perform several amusing activities, was a wonderful surprise, very enjoyable and very fun to replay.

As a whole, Nightfall contains everything that Prophecies has and expands upon it nicely. Nightfall also has a nice mix of indoor and outdoor missions. The only draw back to the outdoor scenery is that they limited it to a savanna grasslands style.

The extras that this boxed set includes are nice for people that are heavy into Guild Wars or curious about what goes into making the game. Most will find those items of little value. Think of DVDs with a huge art section with hundreds of sketches that were used to create the movie. If that amount of detail interests you, then the extras included in this boxed set should as well.

With more player control of the battle through the use of fully customized Heroes, strong story driven missions, beautiful scenery, hundred of skills and several classes, Nightfall is the best part of the Guild Wars world.

Guild Wars: Eye Of The North Expansion Pack Review

Guild Wars: Eye Of The North Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This expansion pack requires that players have at least one of the previous Guild Wars campaigns and at least one character at level 20. If you want to play Eye of the North (EotN), you must already have Guild Wars: Prophecies, Guild Wars: Factions, and/or Guild Wars: Nightfall installed or purchase at least one of them now.

PREVIOUS CAMPAIGNS
(1) Guild Wars: PROPHECIES has a good story line and is also the most natural "prequel" for the story in Eye of the North. However, leveling to level 20 in Prophecies is comparatively slow and reaching the city of Lion's Arch (where you can access the new region in EotN) will take you many hours of concentrated (though enjoyable) play.
(2) Guild Wars: FACTIONS is the quickest of the campaigns in which to level up to level 20. It also has the best story of the three campaigns, although some players did not like Factions as well as the other two campaigns. I enjoyed the campaign's Asian theme and locations, although I found the missions in Factions to be much more challenging than in Prophecies.
(3) Guild Wars: NIGHTFALL introduces Heroes (customizable non-player characters), which are very helpful as you level your character, but has the weakest storyline of the three campaigns (it is still a good story, however). I also found the leveling to be a bit slower in Nightfall than in Factions.

WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT EYE OF THE NORTH
Everything that I appreciate about Guild Wars is in EotN:
(1) It has an intriguing story, punctuated by entertaining and often amusing cut scenes (mini-movies). The story is also divided into three main "arcs", allowing players to go this way or that in the story line, as they so choose.
(2) It has additional Heroes (you get a monk, elementalist [mage], and mesmer almost from the get-go, and more Heroes come soon after via questing).
(3) Once again, Guild Wars is packed with extraordinary landscapes, monsters, and battle effects. I spend a lot of time just snapping gorgeous landscape "photos" (Print Screen) to use on my desktop.
(4) Numerous multi-level dungeons have been included. The dungeons are challenging and often fun (but sometimes extremely difficult if not downright impossible [see below]).
(5) The option to play in groups of "real" players or alone (with henchmen/heroes) or in any combination of real players and henches you want. I LOVE the fact that the Guild Wars campaigns accommodate so many playing styles. As for me, I like to play on my own or with a friend most of the time but I do group up with others occasionally. Grouping is also a great option for normally solo players that are having particular difficulty with some mission or quest.
(6) The story arcs involving the new races--Norn, Charr, and Asura--are entertaining and the associated missions are challenging, occasionally humorous, and creative.

WHAT's NOT GOOD ABOUT EYE OF THE NORTH
(1) Guild/Alliance interface--It would be helpful to be able to "see" not only who is online but where and what they are, for both your guild and alliance, but you cannot.
(2) Polymock/Dwarven Boxing/Norn Fighting--The new "minigames" introduced in EotN are not very fun in my opinion but, since they are optional, this is not a big problem.
(3) Hall of Monuments--The Hall of Monuments is a place where you can display past campaign achievements. As other reviewers have noted, the Hall is a letdown but, like the minigames, is incidental to the story.
(4) Dungeon Difficulty -- A number of the dungeons and associated quests are irritatingly long and/or difficult (at least with henches and heroes). I wish Guild Wars offered a more reasonable range of dungeon difficulty settings to choose from. Online sites such as guildwiki do provide helpful information and tips for defeating these dungeons and bosses. (With the right heroes and skill sets, many of the dungeons and end bosses can indeed be soloed with henchmen and heroes, but several of the dungeons [see Comments for dungeon list] are, in my opinion, too long, too difficult, and/or NOT WORTH THE TIME AND EFFORT with hero/hench teams. In ratcheting up the difficulty to such an extent, ArenaNet has inexplicably opted to post, in effect, a "Keep Out!" sign for a substantial portion of this expansion for many of its more casual/solo players.)

Overall, however, I am still pleased with and greatly enjoying EotN. It is a welcome addition to an already great game series, this time designed as an Expansion Pack tailored for veteran level 20 players. For new players, Guild Wars is a great game and it's easy to get started. One can jump in via any of the previous campaigns listed above and have a great time with it.

Guild Wars Factions Review

Guild Wars Factions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Games have certainly come a long way and Guild Wars: Factions is no different!

Characters: Both classes offer niche offerings. For example, the Ritualist is a great support character with either healing or damage-dealing properties. The Assassin on the other hand can rush in and do damage every second, slicing and dicing the enemy before they have time to react. What is the most important feature of Guild Wars over all though?Your secondary profession! It MUST compliment your first one if you want a well-rounded character as elite skills are just the tip of the iceberg.

PvP: Howabout PvP you say?Guild Wars: Factions has it in the form of unlimited potential sporting actual missions that can be done over and over again with guild members or with randomly grouped comrades in arms.

PvE:Quests and missions do abound, but not as greatly as in Guild Wars: Prophecies.Guild Wars: Factions only contains thirteen missions total where Guild Wars: Prophecies contained more than twenty.Does this hurt the game?Well, there are plenty of areas to explore, but the continent is not as large as the landmass of Tyria by any means so technically, you could finish exploring all of Cantha in less time then the later.BUT, the game does manage to balance this out though with a very good placement of enemies including enemies that roam in semi-predictable paths making strategizing even more important as you may find an enemy that was running away from you suddenly coming up behind you!

All in all, I'm still playing through Factions on my third completed character and still finding new nooks and crannies to explore. If you're a fan of in-depth RPG's, then you'll enjoy Guild Wars: Factions.

Product Description:
The stand-alone Guild Wars: Factions is the second campaign in ArenaNet's massive multiplayer online role-playing game. The Factions campaign, which can be played either as part of the regular Guild Wars or as its own separate game, takes place on the continent of Cantha, where new and existing Guild Wars players join an epic quest to defeat an ancient evil and save a war-torn empire. New scored challenge missions and strategic competitive missions allow players to test their role-playing prowess and earn the right for their alliance to take control of cities, towns and outposts.

Two new professions, Assassin and Ritualist, join the original game's classes. View larger.

You can customize your characters' clothing colors, weapons and armor. View larger.

If you're interested in complex characters and interactions, look no further than Guild Wars: Factions. View larger. Large-scale alliance battles pit teams from opposing factions against each other in a struggle to conquer new territory and redraw the battle lines across the continent of Cantha. New elite missions allow the most skilled players exclusive access to areas of the ultimate cooperative challenge.
Besides new content, the biggest addition to this sequel are its two new professions, Guild Wars: Factions' Assassin and Ritualist, which join the original game's warrior, elementalist, monk, mesmer, necromancer, and ranger classes. In terms of their immediate skills, Assassins specialize in wielding a dagger weapon in each hand and attacking swiftly, while using evasive skills to increase their running speed. Ritualists, on the other hand, specialize in summoning a variety of stationary spirit creatures in battle. Although these spirit creatures can't advance or retreat like normal characters, they can remain in the world for up to two minutes and can dish out some pretty significant damage, particularly when multiple units appear suddenly amongst enemy characters. In a pinch, Ritualists can instantly destroy their creations in a flash of lightning that damages any nearby foes. Ritualists even possess a unique resurrection skill that can be used multiple times in battle at the cost of half their current health points. Users should note, however, that the new professions are available only in the game's competitive arena battles, and only in certain combinations.
These two new professions actually add a great deal of variety, because in Guild Wars you create a character with both a primary profession and a secondary profession. In Factions, as in the original Guild Wars, all professions' inherent qualities can be useful when picked as a secondary class. For instance, the assassin's ability to move quickly over short distances includes a skill called "shadowstepping," which lets assassin characters briefly sprint, then immediately transports them back to where they started. This becomes incredibly powerful when used as a companion to the fireball-hurling elementalist class, suddenly allowing your character to get close enough to rain down fiery death on enemies before instantly retreating. And the Ritualist can also augment its own attack power which, when combined with the ranger profession, allows you to fire highly accurate and damaging arrow volleys. Not to mention that the Ritualist's multiple-use resurrection power makes it an extremely valuable addition to just about any adventuring party.
As you might expect from a Guild Wars game, when chosen as the primary, each new profession has a highly distinctive look to it. The Assassin resembles a classic ninja assassin from feudal Japan, complete with ragged tights and a face mask. The Ritualist has an indigenous, shaman-like appearance that includes earth-colored tunics, ornate jewelry, and intricate tattoos. As always, you can customize your characters' clothing colors and eventually pick up different weapons and armor that will further alter their appearance. In both cases, each new character seems to fit in well with Guild Wars' art style, which features such influences as medieval fantasy art and Japanese anime cartoons.
Guild Wars: Factions furthers one of the best made, most popular, and most intriguing games of all time. Anybody who is interested in complex character development and interactions, combined with smooth and immersive combat-action gameplay, will want to check this series out. This Collector's Edition includes bonuses such as a CD of the game's soundtrack, and a double-sided poster with a Map of Cantha on one side and the Factions Poster on the other. This Collector's Edition also includes a game manual, quick reference card, art book, desk calendar, mouse pad, sticker set, key for bonus music, and a special in-game dance emote for the two new Assassin and the Ritualist classes.

Guild Wars Nightfall Review

Guild Wars Nightfall
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You've probably already read the gaming reviews on this, so you know the stats: new Hero system, new items, new classes, no monthly fee, etc.

One of the most important new additions to the game series is the Hero system, where you can customize and have much greater control over your Heroes (upgraded henchmen). I tend to solo a lot, since I rarely have blocks of time or have the patience to deal with other players, so this lets me get an often more competent (you customize their skills) team together. The beauty of this latest Chapter is that it enhances all previous Chapters (Prophecies and Factions): you can use your Heroes in the prior Chapters. This backwards compatibility was quite the bonus to my prior investment, and rewarding loyal players is EXACTLY the right thing to do.

Every Chapter, ArenaNet has upgraded the graphics engine, and Nightfall continues that trend. I know, I know, gameplay > graphics, but this scores on both counts. Graphically, it has spoiled me for many other games, and the art direction and creativity is nothing short of astounding.

As for cons, it isn't quite as casual gamer-friendly as some of the other titles out there, such as City of Heroes. You do need to learn about how skills work, and sometimes you get item drops (there is loot!) that you don't know what to do with. However, if you know how to read, you can just look it up on the 'net.

I've found this latest release to actually be their best one yet, and I'm still debating whether to recommend new players pick up Chapter One (Prophecies) for the storyline or this one for sheer features and streamlined gameply and story. They've truly learned from the previous two Chapters and incorporated the lessons into Nightfall.

Guild Wars Game of the Year Review

Guild Wars Game of the Year
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Guild Wars is a very solid MMORPG that strongly encourages team play. The graphics are top-notch (if not up to the cartoon levels of World of Warcraft), the play addicting, and it's well-balanced.With no monthly fee, it's one of the best bargains in the MMORPG world.I take off a star and a half for the forced team aspect as well as the focus on pure fighting versus creating a world, but add 1 back for the value proposition so give this 4 and half stars, or a 4/5 fun/overall split.

This is a tough game to master with no outright 'uber' classes.Players choose 2 of 6 fairly standard basic professions (1 tank, 1 mezzer, 1 healer/defender, 2 nukers, 1 mezzer/nuker) with the second profession lacking one of the strongest attributes of the primary (including which armor you can wear and runes you can use).As you level, besides gaining hit points you do two things - specialize in the various basic class attributes and gain access to the real key: skills. You're limited to a certain number of active skills while in combat, so strategy and careful character building take precedence over getting to level 20.Experience to buy skills can be gained through basic PvE, missions, or PvP.Using a small set of skills wisely along with picking and choosing your attribute development is far more important than getting all the 75 skills available to each profession. This is definitely not a game that is easy to blindly powerlevel.

Cleverly designed, this sidesteps a lot of the problems surrounding the genre.Rather than deal with constant kill stealing, maps and missions are instanced, and you don't have to spend a whole slug of time traveling between regions.(Once you've been to a locale, boom, it's yours.)Recovery time is minimal as is non-combat time. You don't need to spend time harvesting mats and begging a friend to make your next weapon.Instead, kill things, complete missions, and you can bring mats straight to the NPC crafter to make a custom weapon (that can only be equipped by you, likely eliminating much of the secondary market for gear in this game.)

My reservations are four fold but minor.First, the way to truly advance in this game is through missions - and the only way to accomplish many missions is in a balanced team. Thus, you're basically forced to group despite the nominal ability to solo. This really means you have to figure out proper character development early - rather tough with your first few characters until you find a good guild, and frankly, sometimes many of us feel like playing solo. Second, the lack of any real crafting system here means you fight...and fight...and fight.CoH has done well with a similar model (without the PvP aspect) and it's worked well - not to mention the biggest headaches in most MMORPGs are the messes created with a bad item creation system - but if you enjoy socializing more than fighting (the typical harvester/crafter) this isn't the game for you.Third, the game really revolves around PvP much more than PvE for the above reasons - so if you're looking for a game without conflict, this isn't it.Finally, while the focus on instanced events does prevent many of the problems found in most other MMORPGs, it also reduces the multiplayer aspect except in non-instanced locales like towns. The net effect of all of these is to slightly dilute the 'world' aspect, and for those looking for total immersion this may not be a perfect match.

Still, this is a great game and deserves 4 1/2 stars, and if you're looking for an alternative to the hordes of WoW that strongly encourages teaming this should be at the top of your list. One final note: this actually runs quite well even on my soon-to-be discarded Athlon 1100 and is geared towards doing well on slightly older systems - and even 56k modems! - unlike most new games.Big plus.
