Guild Wars Nightfall Review

Guild Wars Nightfall
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nightfall takes place in the land of Elonia, the starting area of which is a large island. The story follows a group of people that are concerned with their leader's involvement with demons and what that alliance could mean for their land.

In Guild Wars, players have can use eight skills from a pool of several hundred possible skills. Skills can only be changed in towns, where other players meet and accept quests. Each character has a primary and secondary occupation or class. Each class has a set of skills. With the ability to pick skills from two classes, Guild Wars offers an endless array of skills to each player.

Nightfall adds the ability to control up to three AI Heroes per player, out of a total of 15 heroes. The player is able to customize each hero's skills, skill points, 2 distinct sets of armor, dye that armor and give each hero weapons which can be customized as well.

Also, the player can control which skills can be use by the Hero AI by placing the skill in order, from left to right, and deactivating skills so that those skills can only be used when the players initiates them.

Shortly after Nightfall came out, templates were introduced. Templates allow players to save skills, skill points, armor, and items to a local file that can be reloaded for later use or exchanged with other players.

Another addition was the ability to save skill sets. These sets can also be exchanged with other players by a long ASCI code. Both of these additions, while not specifically part of Nightfall, further enhance game play.

Nightfall uses a pleasant mix of story driven indoor and outdoor missions to tell the background of the lands. The missions range from the basic slay type to more interesting infiltration. One mission, in which the player crashes a party and must perform several amusing activities, was a wonderful surprise, very enjoyable and very fun to replay.

As a whole, Nightfall contains everything that Prophecies has and expands upon it nicely. Nightfall also has a nice mix of indoor and outdoor missions. The only draw back to the outdoor scenery is that they limited it to a savanna grasslands style.

The extras that this boxed set includes are nice for people that are heavy into Guild Wars or curious about what goes into making the game. Most will find those items of little value. Think of DVDs with a huge art section with hundreds of sketches that were used to create the movie. If that amount of detail interests you, then the extras included in this boxed set should as well.

With more player control of the battle through the use of fully customized Heroes, strong story driven missions, beautiful scenery, hundred of skills and several classes, Nightfall is the best part of the Guild Wars world.

Manhunt Review

Manhunt
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've seen far too many reviews of this game (and others) by people who played it for two days, got 1/10 the way into it, and felt that qualified them to write a review. It doesn't. Especially for a game like this.
First of all, and this must come right up front, this is *not* a game for children, or even teens. The game is rated for 17 year-olds and above. That might even be young. This is by far the most graphically violent and grotesque game ever , and it will gradually desensitize you from the first to the last level, until it feels perfectly normal to gut someone and hollow out their head with a chainsaw. Absolutely not for anyone under 17. Furthermore, later in Manhunt you will be killing cops - the one area of the game where I felt truly uneasy - so again, no kids.
The Story
Those people at Rockstar are disturbed if nothing else. From the makers of Grand Theft Auto comes Manhunt, a game that makes the aforementioned series look as tame as Super Mario Cart. You are Cash, a murderer on death row who receives a lethal injection. But something unexpected happens - you wake up, fully alive, in a strange place. You begin receiving messages from a strange voice in your ear, from a man named Starkweather- the voice of Brian Cox. Cox is an actor you would recognize if you saw him - the head trooper in Super Troopers, he was the father of the girl in "The Ring" - and he lends a large amount of credibility to the game.
You soon find out that Starkweather is a snuff film director. Snuff films are more commonly associated with hardcore pornography, but technically a snuff film is any movie where people die - I mean *really* die. Starkweather forces Cash - you - to act in these films in order to stay alive. He places you in a slum where he has cameras placed everywhere to capture the action, pitting you against different gangs that he employs.
From the first moment this game turns your stomach. It's the first game I've seen use the F-bomb and other profanity so liberally. In fact, about 20 seconds into the game you will come up behind a gang member and spraypaintedon the wall with an arrow pointing at him are the words "kill this dumb ..." You are initially armed with a plastic bag - one of the many weapons in Manhunt - and you sneak up behind him and perform an execution, the signature move of Manhunt. You can kill people the old-fashioned way, fighting toe to toe, fist to fist, but the real way of Manhunt is the executions, of which there are 3 levels. You carefully sneak up behind an enemy, and when you are close enough (your hand will move, letting you know you are in execution range) you press and hold the x button. A target will lock onto his head and the longer you hold the button, the more gruesome the execution will be. Each weapon has only three levels of execution. When you perform an execution the game "takes over" and you simply watch it happen in low-fi video "security camera" mode.
With your first execution comes the uncomfortable feeling that this is very, very wrong. But you'll keep playing. Starkweather guides you through each level, "directing" you exactly where to go and what to do. The point of these levels? To be as gruesome as possible. You get rated at the end of each level by a star system and the more gruesome and violent your kills, the higher you score. So not only is Manhunt the most violent game ever made, the actual strategy of the game requires you to be violent to score well.
Each level gets harder and more weapons become available to you, including a crowbar, a glass shard, a knife, a machete,a bat, a blackjack - and then there's the guns - a sawed off, the sniper rifle, even machine guns, and yes - a chainsaw. Rockstar also gradually paces the gore so you are eased into it. After the initial shock of suffocating a man with a plastic bag and then snapping his neck, ripping someone's throat out with a crowbar has less impact on you than it otherwise would.
This is where most reviewers have played the game to. Many got bored after a few levels and assumed this is all there is to the game. Not true. After several levels of killing the gang members, Cash is able to escape from Starkweather's cycle. Starkweather sics the police on him, and Cash becomes a fugitive, eventually going after Starkweather himself. So the story does develop if you stick with it.
The Game
Gameplay is stealth based, similar to Splinter Cell. It's not a run and gun game - it's a hide in the shadows and sneak up behind people game. If you don't like stealth games, I'd recommend against Manhunt, since it epitomizes the genre.
The optional headset is incorporated. It's how you receive Starkweather's messages and you can also speak into the mic to attract hunters (the gang members). The game isn't all that intelligent. The hunters can't see you even if they are inches away from you (and you are in the shadows), though they do have less defined patrolling patterns than other games I've played.
Graphics
Great and bad. Most noticeably, the rain looks terrible. That's my biggest complaint. Otherwise, the incorporation of "security-camera" style footage is very cool.
Bottom Line
If you liked GTA Vice City *and* Splinter Cell, my guess is you will like Manhunt. It's the next step in the evolution of video games, for better or worse. Rockstar just doesn't care. You probably haven't seen movies as disturbing as this game is. If you have the stomach for it, it's worth getting just to see where games are headed.

MadWorld Review

MadWorld
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let's get this out of the way first: MadWorld is an adult game. It's the most violent game to date, and there are more content discriptors on the back of the box than for Grand Theft Auto. That being said, if you are an adult Wii gamer and have longed for something bloody, visceral, and mature for your little white box, then buy this game. MadWorld is a far cry from the standard casual family affairs that are currently clogging store shelves.

Madworld puts you in the shoes of Jack, a 40-something who has been thrown into the most horrific game show in America: DeathWatch. Jack must fight and kill to survive, for he's been poisoned, and every kill gives him longer to live. However, DeathWatch is all about entertainment. You see, you may have a chainsaw and fists, but the audience wants more than you to beat up some dudes. Your challenge is to create combos by performing multiple maneuvers on an enemy.

For instance, stab a couple of road signs into a goon, put a trash can over his head, then use a spiked baseball bat to launch him into a dumpster where he'll be sliced in half. The violence is so over the top, that as bad as it sounds, it's actually really hilarious. Don't take me for a psychopath, because when you begin to dig in, you'll laugh too. Of course, there may be instances where you'll wince, but it's all in good fun.

Without going into too much detail, here's what you can expect. Scattered throughout each level are minigames called "Bloodbath Challenges." You'll be given a new way to kill people in a certain number of time and rounds. Most are fun enough to warrant multiple plays to get higher scores. Also, you'll encounter some fantastically spectacular bosses, each escalating in difficulty, and each with some truly cinematic action.

The gameplay is well done with tight analog control over Jack, and button presses for actions such as jumping and punching. Certain things are mapped to motion swings such as chainsaw attacks, special moves, and boss fights. The motion controls are simple swipes rather than tired waggle, and you'll appreciate having it done that way.

You'll notice the stark black and white graphics as a departure from most games. This game is stylistic and gorgeous. Screenshots may make everything look confusing, but trust me, the game is very clean and easy to see in action. The only color you'll see in this game is red(and lots of it). This approach really stands out. It's like nothing else you've seen. FYI, this game comes from the folks who brought us Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and Resident Evil 4. This game was placed in good hands.

The audio is fantastic as well. The soundtrack is made up of 20 full hip-hop tracks from up and coming artists. I don't care for hip-hop at all, so I turned the music way down in the options, but that's my preference. What really creates the most audio pleasure is the commentary from two announcers that follows Jack play by play. The voice actors are Greg Proops(of "Whose Line is it Anyways?" fame)and Joe DiMaggio(the voice of Bender from "Futurama" and Marcus Fenix from the Xbox 360 smash franchise, "Gears of War"). The banter goes back and forth and contains some gut-busting humor. It's incredibly raunchy and laced with f-bombs(as well as mf-bombs), but it's sounds so natural and it always gives you something to laugh at-in game.

MadWorld is what hardcore gamers and adults want for the Wii. It's unforgiving in it's nature, but for those who are old enough, the time has come. If you want more hardcore games on the Wii(and less kiddie crap), then buy this title. I'm serious. Don't even hesitate. This belongs in every adult's Wii library.
