PSP UMD Case Review

PSP UMD Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Definitely a good case. It's hard and sturdy. It's got two sliding buttons on the front to open each side of the case. Each side holds 4 UMDs. The slots on the inside hold the UMDs very securely so your UMDs dont go flying around. And even though there is a tight grip to hold the game, this doesnt hinder it from letting the games come out with ease. I've had DVD cases hold onto a dvd so hard that I would actually start talking to the case and saying "If you make me break this DVD, I'm going to go burn you in a fire pit!"

The only thing that might make you want to shy away from this case is that it's as big as your PSP. This doesnt bother me at all, but to some it might.

I took some pics and uploaded them for y'all so you can get a better look than the pic Amazon has.

Oh and dont let Amazons pic fool you... only one slot holds only one game. Not two. Some people might think that due to Amazons pic.

Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice Review

Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fans of the first Pursuit Force will be very pleased with this new edition, which takes everything that was good about the inaugural effort and -- well, does more of it with better graphics.

I also don't recall if the first game had wireless support -- this one does.

I can't comment on the multi-player modes of this game, but I can say that I am enjoying the heck out of the single-player story game.

Pursuit Force is remembered best for the sequences where you jump from one moving vehicle to another, guns blazing, slow-motion if you have earned "full justice" by your righteous actions.

These sequences are back, but what I'm digging this time around is what seems like a greater variety of missions and activities to occupy me as well. Here one mission will involve a variety of activities, from chase and destroy to gunning from a chopper to engaging in combat on foot.

It's all well done, and the graphics are smoother this time around.Excellent orchestral music and sound effects and fine control to boot.

There are also some new bonus modes to extend the title's play value further, which I haven't tried; I've been having way too much fun with the story mode!I also like the purchasable upgrades; I don't remember these from the first game...

Really, for $30, I have to consider this title a must-purchase for PSP action game fans. This is the most fun I've had with the PSP since LocoRoco...

Lumines Review

Lumines
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I purchased this game on launch day, I only knew one thing about it:It was made by the same guy who made REZ.Really, that's all I needed to know to part with my cash.

REZ is a hard to find shooter title for Dreamcast/PS2 that set itself apart by completely integrating the visuals and the gameplay with the music.

Lumines, although the game itself is completely different, also delivers big on this concept. Each action you take, rotating the falling peices, destroying a square of same-colored blocks, setting off a huge combo, all trigger unique musical embellishments and sound effects that go with the soundtrack for each level. This in itself would be enough to make a game engrossing, but the mechanics and hectic pacing of the game make it all the more addictive.

Lumines is a falling blocks game, but it is in no way a tetris clone.Squares fall in blocks of four, and come in two colors, arranged in the block at random.By arranging the squares into 2x2 blocks of like colors, a bar that moves across the screen will clear it.Squares can be as big as you want, and can overlap. Also, depending on the music for the stage, the bar may move faster or slower. There are also special blocks that will clear all blocks of the same color that are touching it.It sounds simple, and it is, but the most addictive puzzle games always are.

This game belongs with every PSP purchase.

Killzone: Liberation Review

Killzone: Liberation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sadly the single player of Killzone Liberation receives a lot of complaints.Apparently Guerrillahas gone w/ the old school approach of making you die a lot before you can complete a level.

Thankfully they have added checkpoints, but unfortunately those checkpoints disappear whenyou exit the game, you can only save after you complete a level, and with some levels requiring multiple attempts and 20 minutes+ of trial and error this really kills any hope of the portable single player mode being balanced towards 5 minute playbursts.

Luckily they have spent a lot of work on a full blown 8 player multiplayer online mode that more than makes up for it.The balance of PvP really destroys the pseudo balance of the single player.Online everyone has the same chance.Strategy, timing and skill are what distance one player from the next.

There are maps and modes to customize, basically if you have 10 minutes to spare and are near wireless, going online w/ killzone is something you will not forget.

They have even added contant packs for free!Something that most shooters now charge for.

It really is 2 different games as enjoyable as the single player is, it can get very annoying doing the exact same thing over and over in the hopes that some cheap grenade or spider won't force a restart.

Online all cheapness is gone as you can get the jump on someone, change weapons, heal team mates the works.

This is a can't miss game for those with wireless. For those without it, you are missing out on the PSP's 2nd best feature.(number one is obviously the gorgeous screen.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Essentials Review

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Essentials
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Picked up the game yesterday at a local Gamestop. Here are some initial impressions after the first hour of play.

Gameplay (7/10)

This is probably the most important department, and SC disappoints. It was clear from the start that developers had trouble mapping all the controls for Fisher onto the PSP due to the absence of a second analog stick, as well as the two fewer shoulder buttons (L2/R2). Movement is severely hampered by this physical limitation. You cannot rotate the camera while moving, which severely limits your ability to get a feel for your surroundings. In order to rotate the camera, you must come to a complete stop, hold the "O" button, and pan using the analog stick. On the positive side, Fisher has all of the classic moves from jumping, rolling, split jump, SWAT move, and more. I haven't tried all the moves but most seem to be there. Knife attack is also included. Another positive is that you can save anywhere; no need to wait till you reach a checkpoint. For some reason, there are no maps for you to follow, which forces you to run around quite a bit especially in dark areas.

Graphics (6/10)

The graphics were also disappointing, seeing how Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (SC:DM) was able to leverage the PSP so effectively. In the initial levels, the environment is really, really dark, so dark that it forces you to use the night vision goggles, which is fine except this view is extremely grainy (almost PS1 quality!) and does not enhance your vision much at all. Even at the highest brightness setting (PSP setting, not game; game does not provide brightness adjustment), it is STILL very dark. I cannot imagine playing this game in a bright room. I was in a relatively dark room, and had issues seeing most elements without using NV goggles.

There is noticeable tearing of the graphical elements such as walls; if Fisher moves too close to a wall, sometimes you can see right through it. In certain positions, you can even see through the back of Fisher's head and see his eyes! This was quite a surprise. I know a 6 out of 10 is harsh, but this is a Splinter Cell title; we have come to expect more than this!

Story (?)

Story in SC series has never been all that important or logical. This one is a bit different in that it takes place in the past when Fisher was a Navy Seal. I have not completed enough of the game to see the rest of the story line just yet.

Sound (8/10)

There was little music in the levels I have played so far; I expect it will improve. The sound volume seemed to be a bit low. The enemies whistle the same tunes that were heard in SC Chaos Theory or Pandora Tomorrow, which irritated me. I know this is a pseudo port to the PSP, but some new tunes would have been a nice change.

Replayability/Online (6/10)

As far as I am aware, there are no unlockables such as SC:DM offers, which limits replayability. There are 3 "bonus missions" in the main menu, but I have not tried these yet; these may require completion of standard missions first. Multiplayer is limited to ad-hoc only, and I do not expect to find much fun in this mode due to the quirkiness of the controls.

Final Score (7/10)

To sum up, this title failed to meet its potential. The SC series had set a high bar for the gaming industry, but this title failed miserably to meet its own standards. Do not get me wrong; there is much fun to be had here, despite the fact that the game feels rushed to market, is very much unpolished, and includes so many annoyances discussed previously. When compared to other action/shooter PSP titles in the market today, such as SOCOM and Syphon Filter, it simply does not compete. The absence of a playable demo also reinforced my original suspicion that this title was not quite ready for prime time.

Buy or Rent? First time fans should definitely opt for Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror instead. Long-time fans and/or SF:DM owners may consider renting first (if you can find it), or buying/selling after beating it/reaching end of patience with the bugs.

Update from March 27
After 3 or 4 hours, this game surprises you by getting much better. Once you get past the control issue, the game sucks you in with a high production value. I shall upgrade my rating to 8/10. A nice addition to the PSP collection.

Lemmings Review

Lemmings
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is really great fun for people of all ages. There's no real violence (well, lots of lemmings die, but the goal is to save them!) and no dialogue at all.The point of the game is to get the lemmings to a safe house, but they all follow each other. In most levels, you have to prevent them from walking off cliffs, drowning, etc. by using tools or skills that you're given. For instance, you could build stairs, or open an umbrella while jumping off a cliff to lighten your fall.Stuff like that. The easy levels are really easy and the hard ones are really challenging, so there's fun for all.My only complaint is that the lemmings are so tiny on the screen, even though you can magnify.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines Review

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bloodlines for the PSP manages to bring some of the experiences of ACII to the portable while also bringing some of ACI's hangups.

This game was created as a bridge from part I to part II with Altair now the head of the Assassins and his quest to hunt down the remaining Templars. Along with this bridge comes with the ability to transfer some of the unlockables found on the PSP to the PS3.

SOme of the pluses are like the PS3 version, you get a variety of missions to run thru as you complete your quest. Also, the climbing and combat controls handle similar to the PS3.

Some of the minuses are sometimes the AI can be overly aggressive and overly sensitive as you walk around and you can find yourself in a fight with 5 or 6 gaurds almost for no reason. Also, the colors look a bit more washed out and it makes it hard to see sometimes where to climb, on the flipside of that, for the processing power of the PSP, the game does look impressive. Lastly in quests where there is a time limit, some become almost impossible to finish with the controls and orienting yourself to your goal which seems so far away.

The voice acting is a mixed bag whereas after having a modern day accent on the first game, Altair has a middle eastern one here. Also it really helps that you have played the first one to understand that this is a simulation as the PSP version has so far made no mention of Desmond or his modern day issues as of yet.

On a scale of 1to 5 I give it 3 stars

Need For Speed: Most Wanted Review

Need For Speed: Most Wanted
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this game hoping EA redeemed themselves for the junk they called Need for Speed Rivals. It's better than NFS Rivals, but Most Wanted still has many, many flaws.

The game starts out pretty fun. Once you get to around 7th or so on the blacklist, it starts getting pretty bad.

The first few races are easy wins. Then, it gets a bit more difficult, and around 7th on the list, the races just don't get difficult, but thanks to the terrible AI (the AI might actually be too good, thus making it terrible), they get almost impossible to beat. I love a challenge, but EA takes it too far. Don't forget the complete lack of realism in the game.

First of all, I don't think anyone at EA researched the cars in the game. In real life, in a race between a modded RX8 and an equally modded WRX STi, the STi would wipe the floor with the RX8. Not in this game. Want to beat the modded STi? Buy a stock RX8, you're almost guaranteed a win. An Adui TT is not faster than a Corvette. It has nowhere near the power of a Vette. But in this game, it's the other way around. The TT will beat the Vette. EA should have fixed this, make the cars in the game resemble the cars in real life.

Second, the AI never makes mistakes. While even the best players will spin out and crash occasionally, the AI cars rarley, if ever, crash or lose control.

Third, the cops in this game are extremley annoying. The cop cars have perfect handling and are always faster than you. Not only that, the cop cars have some dirty tricks to try to get you to stop. They'll force you into civilian traffic, they'll crash into you, anything. Most people want the game to be realistic. Now, I've never been involved in a high speed chase myself in real life, but I know that cops would never, ever force you into a civilian's car to get you to stop.

If the complete lack of realism isn't enough, here's more complaints:

1. Where did everything go??? The console versions of NFS Most Wanted have more cars, more tracks, free roam...everything. Most things were cut out for the PSP version. No free roam, fewer cars, a small selection of tracks, and other features are gone. I know that UMDs don't hold as much as DVDs, but if Rockstar can fit Liberty City on a UMD, EA could fit whatever city this game takes place in on a UMD and offer free roam.

2. The few tracks you have are very repetitive. I'd say there are 10-15 tracks, and around 100 races. You'll be seeing the same thing over and over again.

3. The soundtrack is rather dissapointing. If you like rap, its probably OK, but I despise rap, so I have to choose from the few rock songs there are. I've found the best soundtrack is muting your PSP and putting on your favorite CD. I wish EA would have taken advantage of the ability to transfer MP3s to your PSP and allow custom soundtracks.

So, what does the game do well?

1. The graphics are pretty good for a handheld. I'd say they're just slightly worse than the PS2.

2. Quick loading times. I've yet to see a loading screen last for more than 20 seconds or so.

3. If you don't count the terrible AI as a bug, this game has few bugs.

4. Great time waster. If you're bored and have your PSP with you, this will help pass the time as you attempt to beat the horrible AI.

So, is this game worth 50 bucks? No, it isn't. Maybe once the price drops down to 40 or 30, it would be worth it. But if you have $50 to spend and really want it, buy it for PS2, Xbox or Xbox 360. You'll be happier. But if you just want a good racing game for PSP, pass this up and take a look at Burnout Legends.
