Fatal Frame Review

Ghosts are pretty scary.
I'm not talking about your "Casper the Friendly Ghost" spirits.I'm talking about your "corner-of-the-eye ethereal image" ghosts, the ones we all talk about in hushed voices over a cup of hot cocoa on stormy nights.Despite what scientists, religious fanatics or your mother may say, "ghosts can be very real ... and very scary."While fans of the horror genre may find their Resident Evil's or Silent Hill's staling, it'd be a hard press to find a single individual who wasn't disturbed, nerve racked or swear-to-death frightened of what Tecmo has done with such a simple concept as a ghost house. Fatal Frame mixes RPG gameplay with eeriness to create an experience like no other you have come unto before.
The story behind Fatal Frame is as follows:A young girl named Miku Hinasaki has ventured into the mysterious Himuro Mansion, the last known whereabouts of her missing older brother, Mafuyu.Mafuyu had ventured inside to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a certain renowned author named Junsei Takamine, who is Mafuyu's idol.Takamine's aim was to study the mansion's mysterious and bloody history, and, as you've imagined, neither him nor any of the members of his research team have been heard from since. You take the role of Miku, who, in the search for her brother, manages to learn all about the craziness going on at the Himuro Mansion and find out a bit more about Takamine and company than she probably wants to know.
As the game's main character, Miku, you will journey through the bowels of a haunted mansion in search of your lost brother with only a camera as protection. But not just any camera, mind you.Through an Onimusha-like upgrade system, you will be able to transform your poltergeist-friendly camera into a finely tuned spook-busting machine. Each ghost that you capture via your camera will net you a certain amount of spirit points, which you can spend on adding or improving functionality to your camera.Fatal Frame also delivers a very gripping psychological freak fest. The scenes of murder and ritualistic sacrifices are eerie and disturbing. The mansions long dead residents revealing themselves in grisly fashions at the most opportune moments (I swear they must monitor your heart rate through the controller) will keep your pulse racing at an unhealthy level, unless of course you're one of those jaded gamers made of stone who never flinches.
The graphics in Fatal Frame are just short of astounding.Interactive backgrounds, freaky grain-film filters, impressive Luigi's Mansion-quality dynamic lighting effects.Every object casts a realistic shadow on the background resulting in an almost frightening level of immersiveness. You'll see shadows moving as you walk, which adds in to the realism. However, don't expect to see everything in daylight or something; everything is dark and you'll have to look around with the flashlight. Also, while each character has an almost manga look to them and may not be uber-detailed like in Silent Hill 2, they still look sharp and contain elements of realism. The atmosphere is just breath-taking and although some areas within the mansion do look the same, the feeling of deja-vu is rarely noticeable. The whole package is pulled together really well to create a grisly environment.Excellent texture maps and a well-detailed environment immediately draw you into the game.
But what really stands out is the design and look of the ghosts. In fact, the ghost effects are awesome to behold. They fade in and out, and the visual effects when they are "invisible" is well done. You will find yourself shocked and horrified by what turns up when you least expect it.
The sound in Fatal Frame is anything but clunky.Using 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound, it is composed mainly of an organic-ambience and strange ritualistic chanting music that would scare your little brother to death, if you were to record the samples onto a mini-recorder, put the device under his bed and hit play at full volume ... while he is sleeping.Ghosts will scream in agony as you film them and taunt you in the instances when they have the upper hand.Supernatural objects will resonate with a spooky hum as you close in on them, faint voices can be heard through long corridors, footsteps sound suitably different depending on the composition of what your walking on; all this equates to an audibly impressive, realistic experience that reverberates with resounding effect. But it was some of the voices that got my skin crawling the most.Whispers haunt certain corners while low demonic murmerings haunt others. Some spirits will taunt you while others will cry out in their torment, "It hurts ... It hurts ..."
Fatal Frame is a wonderful game that takes quite a lot of courage to play. You seriously do not know how scary this game is, and if you'll be able to handle it.Only buy it if you can stand in a pitch black haunted house screaming satanic verses in real life. It's a great game, but it makes most gamers run home crying to their mommy.Intense, but a definite classic.Buy it if your tough.

Fatal Frame 2 Review

Fatal Frame 2

I have to say that I'm a huge fan of the survival horror genre. I absolutely love the Resident Evil series. Last year I picked up the first Fatal Frame on a whim and I was thoroughly surprised. Not since Nemesis burst though a door and chased after me had I been so scared. So after numerous sleepless nights (from ghostly nightmares) I finished the first game. Never had I anticipated a sequel to a game like I had for Fatal Frame.
Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly starts off simply. Two young twin girls, Mio and Mayu, are talking to each other in the sun. We see flashbacks of a horrible accident that Mio has about the past. Supposedly her sister, Mayu, was chasing after her and fell down a hill, injuring her knee. Mio starts to apologize to Mayu, when all of a sudden she notices Mayu is nowhere in sight. She looks for her and sees she's wandering off into the woods. Mio calls after her, but she doesn't stop, or answer. Mayu keeps walking, and suddenly it's pitchblack. Mio finally catches up to Mayu and they come to a small village. A village that they can't leave. Ever.
Muahahaha!!!
Just joking. Seriously though, this game is super creepy. I can't play it by myself, I find my heart racing and don't want to open another door. Who knows, maybe I'm lame, but ghosts creep me out.
If you're not familiar with the gameplay, your weapon is a "Camera Obscura," which shows things that normally can't be seen with the human eye. This means ghosts and any other kind of unnatural apparition. You then take pictures of these ghosts and it acts as an "exorciser." The storyline is great and full of surprises. The graphics are beautiful and the lighting is amazing. Definitely pick up this game if you love horror movies or survival horror games.

"Fatal Frame" is a game that definitely delivers. Although it does not have any particulary impressive premise (young girl with a camera investigates a haunted house) , it doesn't take long for you to really get into the game, and the scares start coming thick and fast.
The plot is fairly simple: main character Miku has come to the house to find her missing brother, so it's mostly a matter of making your way through the mansion, solving puzzles that will open doors, and trying to piece together the grim history of the house. But to do this, you have to be prepared to encounter a wide variety of ghostly apparitions, and it's here that the game really excels. The appearances of the ghosts are almost always a surprise, and it has to be said that they look and sound terrifying. After recovering from the shock, your next task is to quickly equip your camera and try and snap the ghost within the frame. This task can be very challenging, as more often that not the ghost will dart around, disappear completely and materialize behind you, or lunge at you unexpectedly and start throttling the life out of you! The idea of using a camera to fight is unusual and works well...by holding the ghost in constant view as it approaches, the camera will "charge up" and you can release a more powerful attack when you finally press the shutter-but are you brave enough to do that?. The best thing is that once you have completed Miku's first night, the ghostly appearances are far more randomised, and as you search the house once again (every chapter has new items and tasks appearing in places you have already explored), you will feel the tension as your camera suddenly lights up, and the controller throbs in your hands...oh no, another one! But, in a great additional aspect, the more ghosts you snap, the more points you score, which can be used to enhance the capabilities of the camera, so you have an element of levelling up which heightens and extends gameplay.
My only criticisms are that the game is quite short, and Miku is quite hard to control as you continually run in to bits of furniture, and she often rotates all over the place every time the camera angle changes. Plus, her "run" mode is no more than a gentle jog...no good for escaping evil ghosts! Still, I suppose it would have made the game even shorter were you able to dash through the mansion in no time at all...The graphics are great, the mansion looks suitably decrepit and sinister, and the secret behind the house's evil reputation (as it is slowly revealed) involves some truly sickening and creepy events...you have been warned!
Do yourself a favour and ONLY play this game after dark, with the lights off, you won't be sorry. It's easily as scary as "Silent Hill", in places more so, so I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Fatal Frame III: The Tormented Review

Fatal Frame III: The Tormented
Average Reviews:

Tecmo's survival horror series Fatal Frame continues to outdo its competition (resident evil, Silent hill)in the spook factor with its mix of Japanese lore, the universal fright of ghosts and its bizarre sacrificial rituals. The latest entry in the series deals with Rei Kurosawa, a young photographer who has recently lost her fiance in a car wreck. While taking pictures of a rumored haunted house she snaps a photo in which her dead lover appears. This and incident sets in motion theevents for Fatal Frame 3: The tormented.

For fans of the series very little has changed in terms of actual gameplay but there have been a few major changes in the game setup. The biggest difference that gameplay is split into two worlds, a dream world and the real world. The dream world is of course the nightmarish aged decaying world of "the house of sleep" while the real world is modern Japan where you investigate pieces of the dream world and learn info on what is happening in your dreams.

The second biggest change is the addition of two playable characters, Miku (from Fatal Frame 1) and Kei (uncle to the two girls in Fatal Frame 2). By using 2 characters connected two the first 2 installments, Fatal Frame 3 attempts to explain the events of the malice in all three games.

Tecmo once again succeeds in realising a brilliant, vivid world. The game's use of sound and background noise truly ups the scare factor. While walking empty corridors you can hear voices echo in the background, perfectly beating bells will ring faster to make you think danger is imminent only to have nothing happen while in other silent spots ghosts appear and attack out of nowhere.

The graphics are up to TECMO'samazing standards although some of the characters look a bit "blockier" compared to the beautiful rendering that was done on Fatal Frame 2. The controls are a bit clunky at times but these are minor problems in the game as they crop up very little.

Those who found Fatal Frame 2 to be a bit on the easy side will find more to challenge them. Players will have to alternate between characters to reach certain parts of the house. Film is limited so make each shot count (if you can), And NO more staying in finder mode during battle. This new batch of ghosts can actually weaken your shot the longer you wait for them.

There are more frightening spirits in this game too. The sinister sword/cleaver weilding priest can run superfast as well as cut you. The black figured/shadowy tormentors intimidate with their wispy movements and nondefined bodies. And of course it wouldnt be Fatal Frame without a even villaness, in this case a evil blue tatooed lady who silently walks the house of sleep corridors waiting for you. And on top of it all the death screams the spirits wail as they die really is unnerving.

The house of sleep is a twisted setting. Loaded with bizzare rooms, some truly disturbing, others scary in their strangely familiar look. As you explore you'll see rooms that are plucked from the first two games. Fatal Frame 1's large tatami Grand Hall and rope hallway reappear as do Fatal Frame 2's Osaka house. And then there are rooms unqiue to Fatal Frame 3 like the "ruined hallway" which has blacken figure shapes burnt into the walls with Japanese shinto ropes hanging down-all bizarre.

Overall Fatal Frame 3 is a solid video game and a superb example of the survival horror genre of video games. Despite a rare clunky control and one or two bad camera angles, this game is a solid 5 star release. totally frightening and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
