Backyard Baseball 2003 Review

I am looking forward to the release of this game tremendously. The first BYB was the debut by Humongous Entertainment for the Backyard Sports series. The second was much improved, offering Major League Teams and players, along with online play. The last three releases from Humongous (owned by Infogrames) have been fabulous games with computer animation as well as hand drawn. It's hard to imagine that Backyard Baseball 2003 will be able to beat the success of BYB'01, but with the return of players like Sammy Sosa, Derek Jeter, Jason Giambi and Alex Rodriguez coupled with new players such as Ichiro, Tim Hudson and Carlos Delgado, this looks to be one of the better Backyard Games. I was mildly disapointed with the performance of Backyard Basketball, not because of bad graphics or gameplay flaws, but because of having only two professional players (Kevin Garnett and Lisa Leslie) and no official NBA teams! One minor gameplay glitch miffed me about BYF'02, but it was a small price to pay for excellent graphics and 10 pros such as Brett Farve. BYB'03 wields 4 brand new fields. Go to the Infogrames web site and go to Children's games and click on Backyard Baseball 2003 for screen shot. Ichiro up to bat against the Twin's Brad Radke now encompasses my computer screen. I am saddened by the loss of favorites Mark McGwire, Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn, especially Ripken. Regardles of popular belief, Cal IS the best infielder in that game (Sorry, Derek, buddy). Hopefully with the rise of BYB'03, will come more cheats. I think the employment of cheat codes could do no harm to the game. ...!! Well, the dawn of a new Backyard game is coming, and while I can't make the Yankees lose the World Series in the real world, perhaps my Mariners can pull of a few '03 miricales in the Backyard Realm. Until then, Jah Backyard Peeps, RIDE ON! go M's, make them yanks cringe. Out.

I had that other baseball game (2K7) but did not like the out of focus look. For example when you are at the plate, the stands in the outfield are blurry and out of focus.I hated that so much that I sold the game right away. That also happens when the camera is on the batter. In that case, the fans in the stands to the sides and back of home plate are very blurry looking.I know that happens in real games but it looked dumb in a video game and should have been left out.

Compared to 2K7, MLB The Show has better graphics, better animations and an a very adequate play-by-play team.It was easy to get into the game play also.I only played a couple of games but I liked what I saw heard and liked the control scheme.A couple of things bugged me though.First, I once had MLB 05 on the PS2 and when you hit a home run, you would get fireworks and/or animation from objects like the rising apple in NY, the swinging bell in Philly or the rotating pin wheels and fireworks in White Sox Park (I know it's Cellular Field but I prefer to call it White Sox Park). In the PS3 version, I didn't see any of that and was very dissapointed. How can they have it in a lesser version and not include it in the latest generation machine's software.Did someone forget to put it in?It takes some of the fun out of hitting home runs. Also, the AI (artificial intelligence) can be suspect.I had a man on third and a ball was hit to the first baseman.Instead of trying to cut down the runner at the plate, he instead ran to touch first base to get the hitter and then threw to home.As a result the run scored when it should have been contested.I've heard of other like mistakes and while no video game yet has proved to be perfect those are mistakes that should have been corrected in testing.

The crowd in this game looks great from every angle and is the best looking crown in any major sports video game.I read promotional material that said the crowd would interact by going for foul balls but that must have not made the final cut as I didn't see any instance where that happened.I hope they put back the fireworks and animations for home runs and implement the interactive crowd animation for chasing foul balls in next years game.Otherwise between this and the only other game in town (2K7), I would pick MLB The Show 07 for the PS3.

I was a huge fan of MLB The Show 07, and didn't think Sony could really improve upon itself.Boy was I wrong! Here are just some of the improvements made.....

1.Improved graphics - not as much of a cartoony look.Amazing looking fields, background animation (people playing with beach balls in the stands, just as examples) And this time people actually go for foul balls hit into the stands.

2.Improved stats - This game track EVERYTHING, including how your player fares at the plate with various pitches, locations, pitchers, etc.It also has a better "training" mode in my opinion.Similiar to last year's, but a little more specific.

3.You can import your own soundtrack to play in the game. And the manual makes it very easy to do so.

The only thing that I found that was a negative so far is when you are fielding. If the batter takes a ball or strike, many times the at-bat starts over, with a 0-0 count.

They did say that you can play an entire game, and even save the game before a full game is completed. However, this DOES NOT APPLY to the "Road to the Show" mode.

If you want a baseball game that is realistic in just about every aspect, you need to buy this game.I played 07 until today, when I bought 08.And I am certain I will be playing this one until 09 comes out.

Backyard Basketball Review

Don't get me wrong though, I like this game. But even the hard level is child's play. However, this game is designed for kids 5-10.I like it, but it is too easy.My best game so far was 132-12.I think that even a 5 year old wouldn't have a problem kicking everyone's butt in this game. Its fun, and anyone who likes the other Backyard games (hockey, soccer, football, baseball) will like this one.
Pros:
- Very simple controls
- Not hard for little kids
- No offensive content (it is, however, targeted to younger persons)
Cons:
- Way too easy for older gamers (e.g. 9-12)
- Gets stale and repetative after awhile
Altogether this is a good game, but if you are over age 9, this one will be way too easy and you shouldn't get it.Otherwise, you will like this one. It's fun, just too easy, which is why the younger audience will like it.
