(More customer reviews)As a long-time Macross/Robotech/anime-in-general fan I've been waiting for a game like this for a long time and it's finally here. After the disappointing cancellations of the US releases of Macross VFX 1 and 2 I thought I'd never get my chance to fly a Veritech. So after seeing the limited edition release of this
game I decided to give it a try and it has not dissapointed.
Fans of the series will relish the fact that TDK has created a storyline that is original but at the same time allows you to experience some of the events seen in the TV episodes. Another welcome feature is the return of the voice actors for Roy, Rick, Lisa, and Mynmei to reprise their roles (as well as Max's actor, although he's playing the lead role Jack Archer). Hearing Lisa's voice telling me to go rip it up with the Zentraedi made me feel like a kid again.
But it's not just fanboy appeal that makes this a great game. The cel-shaded graphics look awesome and really enhance the anime atmosphere. Dogfights and ground combat are amazing, with dozens of friendlies and Zentraedi (and scads of missiles) making for a lot of furious and jaw-dropping furballs. The controls are also great and make the transformations into the three modes easy and seamless.
The game is not without faults however. The missions are very creative in design, variety, and execution but can sometimes be frustratingly confusing when it comes to knowing where to go or what to do to complete them successfully. The escort/defense and occasional rescue missions can be maddening as well. And as I said the controls are great but the Guardian and especially the Battloid mode don't really give you the sense of moving in 3-D especially with the camera angle generally staying behind your Veritech and therefore not allowing you to see targets almost directly below or above you (even though you have the gun aimed and firing at them).
Both of these problems - and a few more niggling ones which I'll omit for brevity - are more than outweighed by the overall quality of this game. Admittedly it will most likely appeal to fans, but license aside it's still a great action game that will appeal even to gamers with no knowledge of the anime.
On a side note: True fanboys might be interested in the limited edition version which is exactly the same game but has a bunch of nice swag (such as a soundtrack CD and t-shirt) packaged with it.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Review

(More customer reviews)This is probably the best game to ever hit the PS2. Yes, this game is very sick and twisted, even without that bloated Hot Coffee mod. Yes, this may be the game that might have your PS2 controller smashed in frustration (*cough* Zero Missions *cough*). But the sheer size of this game, coupled with the amount of diversity and possibilities, makes this a true gaming milestone.

Put simply, this game is huge: 5 to 6 times the size of Vice City. It took me over half an hour to drive from one city to another. The amount of things that you can do in this game is stunning: Eat, swim, climb mountains, fly jetplanes, change clothes, work out, build stats, go on dates: all here.

And of course using a variety of weapons and jacking cars is still an essential part of the GTA experience: The weapon targeting in this game was a huge step up from the ridiculous auto-aiming engine from Vice City, and the driving controls were sharp as always. I thought that the graphics, while still showing a litttle bit of pop-up here and there, were still pretty stunning for the dated RenderWare engine, especially in the lush countryside. The story and voice acting were good, but Young Maylay (CJ), Sam Jackson (Officer Tenpenny) and James Woods (Mike Toreno) were particularly impressive here. OG Loc was pretty annoying though.

The music was the only thing here that I thought was pretty mixed: I'm not a huge fan of rap, but even I could tell you that the gangsta rap station was the best one on here. Both Radio X and the classic rock station disappointed me compared to V-Rock from Vice City, and who the hell thought it was a good idea to put a country station on here? All the other stations were pretty forgettable. I usually put on my own music while playing most games anyway, so I won't take points off here.

Other than the halfway-decent soundtrack, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a riveting success of a game and every mature gamer should buy it immediately.

Oh, and this special edition is basically the original game minus the Hot Coffee mod, and there are also sections of the game that are easier than the original. It also includes a bonus DVD that has the 20-min Introduction and Sunday Driver on it. Hope this helps.

I've mostly just scratched the surface with this game so far, but it's pretty darn impressive.

It retains much of the engine of the previous two versions, so it isn't as mind-blowing as its earlier incarnations; this is mostly tweaks on a good thing that make it even better.

The list of things that you can do in the game is incredibly expansive, and you'll find yourself in some interesting positions thanks to additions like being able to swim, eat, work out, learn how to fight and shop for clothes.Even the first city is pretty huge and detailed, with lots of nooks and crannies to explore.

Graphically, it's about the same as what you're used to, and the character animations and skins are probably less than what they were in Vice City, but the game compensates by being so large, so much more involving, and offering so many more options to address your style of play.If you're the meticulous type who likes to look good and have people notice your new shoes, you can create a path that maintains such a lifestyle.By contrast, if you're a hoodie who likes to bum around and spend their time down at the local bar playing pool and video games, you can do that too (literally: I lost $50 on a pool game that I got to PLAY, but set the high score on a game down at the carry-out around the corner THAT I ALSO GOT TO PLAY).

Every version of this game has used racist and sexist imagery to varying degrees, so if you're suddenly offended by the material in this game, you're about 5 years late.At the same time, this game does up the ante on the negativity vibe, so to speak, and will-justifiably - raise questions about how offensive a game should be.For once, I'm not taken aback by the violence; this is pretty much par for the course for the series, and it isn't amplified significantly here graphically or otherwise.But I haven't been called a n!gger so much in my life, and I'm black.

So the gameplay is top-notch, the graphics about what you're used to, the replay value fairly high, and you really could make an almost Sims-like life in there.

(More customer reviews)I love this game. It had been consuming my life for almost 3 weeks until I completed all the missions which were all fun. The only thing that the game should have incorporated was a chapter selection. There are a couple of missions which I could do over and over again. Besides that you can do whatever the hell you want whenever you want. I love the wide selection of planes. And by the way for all those who don't know how to fly the Hydra, after you get into rise to a safe altittude and then push forward on the right analog stick for it to fly normally and just hold it back to go into vertical mode. Buy this game now even though its been out for quite a while
