Description: Another chapter of Mortal Kombat begins. The deadly alliance has won, but an unexpected event complicates their taking of Earthrealm (well the fact they turn on each other after their recent victory doesn't help.) The true leader of Outworld, the Dragon King returns to reclaim his army and dominion. An alliance forms once again between the evil sorcerers Shang Tseung and Quan Chi, but this time even Raiden joins the alliance in desperation to avoid the Dragon King's return. It seems only the help of a mysterious stranger can help them fight this new and powerful enemy.

Learning Curve: 9- This game will keep you busy for hours on end. There is so much to explore that if you can do it in a few weeks... you have no life. It's ok though because having no life is fine because who needs healthy relationships when you can kick the virtual crap out of your peers online and further your social handicaps as you talk trash to other players. Yes!!! You can play online now and the performance is actually excellent and with this title white hot right now you got plenty of competition. It's already very competitive ( I mean kompetitive geez where's my head these days.) There are lots of fighters to choose from each with 3 different fighting styles for endless fighting potentials. I've been studying advanced "kombat" on the first 4 fighters already and haven't gotten a chance to go in depth with the others. There are hidden characters to uncover from the krypt. There are different levels to uncover and even the existing ones on initial play have awesome level features that can give you an easy victory. Look out for those ledges. There are also new features. A tetris like puzzle game. An Archon like chess game. An adventure game so that you can play something linear along with your standard classic style Mortal Kombat. You got your hands full for a while with this title. You up for the challenge? If you are come join us in loserville... errr Xbox Live and back up that claim. It'll be more challenging than Halo 2's point and shoot (I'm not dissing FPSes, but we all know it's true.)
Replay Value: 10- Fighting games are like sports games. They exist for high replay value. You can play this game over multiple times challenging friends and honing your skills. Have a Mortal Kombat party with your friends since your girlfriend more than likely left you after acquiring this title. Oh well, good riddance. Mortal Kombat will have you slashing, laughing, and frustrated for months. Until you've moved onto another title which will be a while if you take the time to appreciate this gem.
Difficulty: 8- Because there is so much to consider when rating "difficulty" on this game I'm just bundling it up as a whole. Some aspects of the game will be easier for different players and others will breeze through others. Some gamers will transitition well into this title with Deadly Alliance on your gaming resume. Some characters like Scorpion pretty much function the same. Some will find the puzzles and chess challenging and some will just consider them an annoying mini-game that would best be left out. If you like just straight up "kombat" there is arcade like fighting so you can just avoid that annoying adventure game and puzzle stuff. Open minded gamers will like the new additions I think.
Guide: There is a MK:D guide available from Bradygames for $14.99. It isn't worth your time though. The guide is incomplete and I dunno why publishers even bother to put things out that don't give you an edge. Try IGN or Gamefaqs unless you just want the poster or want to save yourself printer paper. The special edition MKs will set you back about $59.99 so you may want to trim where you can as the holidays are just around the corner. If you ask me pass on the guide and Bradygames shame on you this is unlike you.
Pros: Lots of characters, Fun new mini-games, Entertaining adventure mode, multiple fatalities per character and Hari Karis, ONLINE PLAY (not for Gamecube,) and return of classic favorites like Baraka
Cons: My number one compliant on this title. Choppy controls. Button mashes need to be timed and inputted exact and that is difficult with the joystick. I suggest actually using the D-pad on this game and I hate the thing and I haven't used it since the PS1. The controls are also not responding correctly especially with Mileena in mid-combo. If you try to do her roll towards an opponent mid combo it incorrectly places you D pad input as forward and not back on the D pad. It is irritating me and in close matches that move could cost you the battle. You guys need to send out a fix for that. You listening Midway?
Time Expected to Invest: I think gamers who embrace this game will have months of fun with this title if another title doesn't draw their attentions away. Casual gamers will likely play it long enough to get basic combat down and they will want to see the fatalities and than they will shelf this title afterwards. Shame on you casual gamers that is why you guys get that reputation. I give you guys about 3 weeks with MK.
Retail Value: $49.99 MSRP and $59.99 for the special edition versions (Special includes collectible tin card, special box art, bonus DVD with MK in the making footage and an arcade perfect version of the original MK)
Suggested Purchase Price: I think if you're a big fan go ahead and get the special edition as they are in limited supply. If you just want the game ehhh, just wait till they go down to about 30 or try and grab it used. This season has so many good releases you really want to give MK some time try and pick it up when you the flood gates aren't open, but this is definitely a good title to pick up if your in the market.
Overall: 9- The controls and somewhat redundant effects of this MK make it a 9 instead of a 10, but that is a great score. Online play really makes this title. This title offers a lot and I am more than pleased with my purchase of the special edition. Contrary to other reviews I like my "arcade perfect" version of MK 1 and I haven't experienced the problems of other reviewers. This title will likely make it into my best 10 of 2004 games list, but this season will create it some competition late in the year.
