Sega has followed their Wii ports of Ghost Squad and House of the Dead 2 & 3 with another pair of arcade light gun games, and I couldn't be happier. In Gunblade NY and LA Machine Guns, you fly through the respective cities using machine guns to blow up robotic enemies. The enemies are a real challenge because they take a lot of hits, frequently jump away from you, and fight back aggressively. The fun never turns to frustration and the dynamic movement of the camera and enemies ensures that things stay fresh longer than in other light gun games.("Light gun" is a little inaccurate, since the arcade games used infrared pointers just like the Wii remote.)

Gunblade NY and LA Machine Guns originally ran on arcade hardware more powerful than a Sega Saturn but less powerful than a Dreamcast. The Wii versions' graphics run at a higher framerate and screen resolution, but they maintain the arcade games' blocky characters. The low polygon count may turn off some players, but I'm glad Sega preserved the games' aesthetics rather than letting a team less talented than the original attempt to update the game on a low budget. These are high-quality games that remain fun with minimal updates. The games look crisp and run smoothly, they're about as fun as you remember them, and online rankings and a small set of unlockables have also been added to increase the longevity. If you long for games from a time when "arcade" meant "fast-paced and high-quality" instead of "budget downloadable game," you'll be happy with this.

With some luck, Sega will release Virtua Cop 3 next!
