New TP-Link Network TL-WN861N 300Mbps Wireless N Mini PCI Adapter Retail Complies With IEEE 802.11n Review

New TP-Link Network TL-WN861N 300Mbps Wireless N Mini PCI Adapter Retail Complies With IEEE 802.11n

I have been using the TL-WN861n for about a year in my Dell Latitude D400. The installation was a snap, taking me less than 15 minutes from start to operation. No problems. I have a DLINK DIR-655 N Xtreme Gigabit router at home and this device works well, extended my reach, increased signal strength and provides blazing speed. All great so far.

I am a road warrior and also use this laptop on the road. I have found that when traveling to hotels which mostly use 802.11b/g, I encounter frequent network drops. This comes with no warning - my system simply stops responding to network traffic. The signal strength shows consistently high signals, the IP address still shows and by all observation, the card seems to be properly associated with the network. However, it just stops working. The only ways to get it working again is to power down the card or change to a different hot spot and then return to the original hotspot. The problem is random and is experienced at most hotels that I visit. As such, I would imagine that there is a problem with the 802.11b/g section of this device.

I have found that TP-Link support is thin. Calling them in the past resulted in speaking to a guy who sounded as if he had just woken up -heavy Chinese accent and of little help.

UPDATE: I continued to have problems with this device dropping out of the network. Not just my network, but hotel networks all over the world where I travel. Calls and emails to the TP-Link support are essentially useless. These peopel read out of a songbook and have no escalation path. Here's a quote from the last email after I told him that his answers were useless that I had already been back and forth on the issue:

Sorry for nothing.

Many write positive, some negative. I can't ask all mycustomer to praise TP-link or me.

It is ok to write the truth.

Thank you for you notice.

If you have any further help about our productsplease let me know, or let tp-link support know.

Sorry for bringing you inconvenience.

Best Regards--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not have time to write a long review but I can tell you this Router works lot better than my previous D-Link and Link-sys, which kept disconnecting once a while somehow. But I do not have any problem with this unit. Signal is good, I have N, G and even B wireless devices and it works on all and all together; never had to reset it since I bought it.

I wanted to connect my Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ media player to the internet via my wifi.I had to try three USB devices to finally accomplish this: D-Link DWA-125 (about $22) , Blue Proton (about $6)and the Airlink 101 (about $15).Only the Airlink worked just by plugging it into the USB port; connectivity is excellent. The other two worked only with computers, and require installation of drivers. The Airlink also comes with a driver CD, but if your device does not run a user-accessible OS like windows or linux, the Airlink is best to try first.

I bought this product in early 2009 when it was still in "Engineering" test mode from an overseas seller for my Dell Latitude. It replaced the standard Intel mini-PCI card.I have loved the card ever since I got it.Dell even had a 3rd antenna connector inside my Latitude for the card even though my laptop is from mid 2006(they must have been anticipating something like this).

While it has taken some time for Intel's drivers to come-out (that are stable) and improve them, it will pickup 802.11n signals from far away with the laptops built in antenna's.The speed is incredibly fast.

I have not been able to get the WiMax capability of the card working yet, as I understand that it only works in the 2.5GHz range, but it would be nice to see it when it is finally working or I can scan the freq range for signals.I don't know if there will be special setting needed for each WiMax installation or not.TDS does have an Alvarion 2.5-2.6GHz WiMax 802.16e network running around my area in Madison, WI currently, but I never pickup anything. After speaking with TDS, they told me that they did not support the "mobile" capabilities in the city yet.As I believe that encryption they are using is restricting the card any ability to recognize their network anywhere in the city.

Overall, I would recommend the card.I did not pay the ~$75 that is being asked for here, as I found it for around $35.Mine came with 3 extra antenna's for the laptop, in case it didn't have them already installed. But it will most likely become a standard card on new laptops in 2010.

Average Reviews:

It really improves reception of a Wi-fi signal significantly. This device helps a lot while traveling - at airports and hotels. But there are two complaints I have about it. First, why manufacturer claims contradictory nonsense in two places of a description of this product?
At the very top of this page, it says "Improving 6X Signal Reception and 3x Speed", then below, in Product Description, they say:
Features:
* 200% Performance
* 200% Distance
Wow, so they expect us to believe that both 6 times and 3 times equals 200 percent? Shame on you, whoever wrote that nonsense.

In reality, one can expect some 50% or so improvement in reception, over using a built in average laptop wireless adapter, which is pretty good, in my opinion.

Also, at the time of this writing, there's no driver for Windows 7 available for this device. Existing driver works fine in Windows XP and Vista, but not in Windows 7. I hope this will be resolved by Realtek in the near future. (I'm not mistaken, Realtek is the manufacturer of the chip, upon which this adapter is based).

UPDATE: Died completely after some 6 months of moderate use. Not recognized by any system when plugged into a USB Port, no light, dead completely. What a shame.

price meets performance and then exceeds it!...If it lasts me a couple years it'll have been well worth it....now I have the speed and bandwith throughput I was looking for without spending a fortune to retrofit my wireless network to the higher performing 'N" standard. I also like the usb extension that comes with this adapter which helps me position it in a safe and functional manner.

Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter Review

Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
360 is in the basement, router is on the 2nd floor. My main reason for upgrading was because while watching streaming netflix movies, it would stop and downgrade the quality to keep up with the streaming movie. This doesn't happen on my pc or when I moved the 360 one floor closer to the router.

The package comes with an instruction manual, installation cd and the adapter. The CD sleeve tells you to put it in first before connecting the adapter.I put it into my 360 and it just stared at me.Probably because I had already downloaded the latest 360 update through Live. The instructions were not clear on this but I feel it is for people that have never updated their 360 and need the WPA2 configuration installed to run wireless n.To clarify, to use wireless N you must use WPA or WPA2.You cannot use WEP encryption. If you do not change it on your router configuration, this adapter will run in ABG only.NOT N.You must also have a wireless N compatible router to run at wireless n speeds (duh).

I already had the older MS ABG adapter wirelessly connected to my 360 and linked to my router, so I just shut it down, unplugged the usb cable and plugged this one in instead.Rebooted and ran "test connection" and it kept the old configuration memory of the connection settings (MAC and ip addresses, passwords, WPA2, etc), except it connected full "4 bars" strong and stated the connection type was n instead of g.I checked this on the router as well through my pc.Connection speeds had varied from 28 to 54 mb/s but now jumped to 52 to 108 mb/s. Tested the unit thoroughly with MW2.No hiccups in voice or connection problems with server during multiplayer or spec ops. Also tested netflix streaming. No problems here either. Watched a full movie with no recalibration/interuption.This has never happened before even on a good day.

The adapter comes with little fold out feet on the bottom so you can stand it remotely if you buy a usb extension cable.Very handy feature if your 360 is buried in an entertainment rack.

Offnote complaint: Router is DLink DGL4500 GamerLounge ABGN, non-firmware updated (which has been known to cause problems).People have complained that this router is not simultaneous dual band.I was on xbox live playing a game in wireless n and using my iphone (wireless g only) to look up info on the net at the same time.I believe the "simultaneous" complaint refers to wireless n devices not being able to see wireless g devices on the same server.Does not affect my configuration.

Conclusion:
Does everyone need this? No.But if you don't want or can't run cable through your house and want the fastest connection speed possible, this is a great trouble free solution. When choosing between the older version and the newer one, the price differences between the two MS supplied adapters is minimal enough that this should be your purchase choice unless you NEVER plan to upgrade past g or your 360 is pretty much in line of site of your router.

I do not work for MS, own a PS3, have red ringed my 360, and still recommend this product.

Pro's: speed, pain free installation, speed, remotely locatable, speed, 2 antennae, did I mention speed???
Con's: clamshell packing, price, vague installation instructions, fragile antennae only pivot left/right, not forward/back or rotateable, same with old one.But since it can be located remotely, not really an issue.
