(More customer reviews)I got this game at EB Games thinking it was going to be awful.I started playing it, and I actually liked it!The basic idea is that you are on a reality TV show, where the goal is to make your neighbor as mad as possible.In order to do that, you play tricks on him - like drawing all over his mom's portrait with a black marker, cutting his favorite chair in half, switching out his hard candy with bath beads, etc.When he finds out, he gets super mad!And if you manage to pull several tricks in a row, you get extra points.If you get caught, he beats you up pretty bad. :D
The game runs well, I never had any issues when I was installing or playing it.The only thing I didn't like about the game is that I beat it about 2 1/2 hours.There are only about a dozen scenarios to do, and each has a timer of about 5 minutes.Also, I would have liked to see more variety in tricks - by the last few scenarios I knew every single trick and it was just a matter of strategizing on what order I wanted to pull them off in to get the maximum amount of points.
Overall - decent game, but way too short. :)

Colonization, is a semi-sequal to Civilization. It deals with the colonization of the American colonies. You can play one of the old world powers trying to conquer the new world. The gameplay is very very similar to Civilization. The game is turnbased.

Railroad Tycoon Deluxe, is a graphically enhanced version of Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon. In this realtime game you become a Railroad Baron trying to make money by running trains building factories and using the stock market.

Transport Tycoon is a similar game developed by Chris sawyer and published by Microprose. It expands the idea to bus lines, airplanes, ships, etc. Also adds the isometric prospective.

Pirates is the hybrid rpg-adventure-action-strategy game. In this game you sail the seven seas to capture treasure, make your fortunes, find your love, and rescure your family.

All the manuals for the games are on CD, which you need to use the included Adobe Acrobat Reader to print.

RAILROAD TYCOON 2 PLATINUM Review

Let's start off with a few things:

Yes, this is an old game. And, yes, you can probably pick it up for $20 (or less). And, yes, there is a newer version of RailRoad Tycoon out.

But I personally don't find the newer version to be as much fun as this one.

The graphics aren't striking. There's no whiz-bang 3-D animation. There's only strategy.

The scenarios seem easy enough:

"Create a railroad company, and lay track from Baltimore to Washington DC. Make 10 journeys with a train full of people in 10 years and win this scenario."

Or

"Connect New York to Chicago, carry 10 trainloads of passengers between these cities and have a company book value of $10 million. You have 20 years."

Okay, these may not be the exact scenarios, but they're close.

This game isn't just laying track and putting trains on them. You've got to create trains to do specific tasks. Start at a Iron mine with 2 cars full or iron, run to a Coal mine and pick up 2 additional cars, run to a steel mill and wait for the steel to be made, then off to a Tool and Die company for goods, now deliver those goods to a city and start it over again.

The scenarios are challenging, and fun. Sometimes it's not about running trains, but how well you run a company--or how well you play the stock market.

I found this game very addictive, fun and still enjoyable years after my initial purchase.

Well worth the money. And you can find online guides to help you if you get stuck.

Railroad Tycoon 2 Platinum Edition Review

(More customer reviews)If you have Railroad Tycoon Gold, there is no need to buy this one.There isn't anything new except for a few new maps.That was disapointing to me.But if you have neither of the previous Railroad Tycoons, this game is by far the most entertaining game I own.
If you like economic type games, one that tests your skills in owning your own business, then this is the game for you.
Also, the stock market effect in this game is awesome.Very good game and one that is addictive.
The graphics are excellent and the levels of difficulty are fairly easy to down right impossible.
If you do not have this game, I highly reccomend it!

Railroad Tycoon 3 Review

(More customer reviews)After anxiously waiting for a Mac release of Railroad Tycoon 3, I find that it's a much-needed upgrade of Railroad Tycoon 2. However, that's really all it is -- I'd be tempted to call it Railroad Tycoon 2.5 rather than 3. There are probably enough changes to track building and industries to warrant a new version number, but other than that and a few interface changes, RT3 is essentially the same game as RT2.

The most obvious difference is in the graphics. The new 3-D engine is fantastic. You can actually watch the side rods of most of the steam engines go round and round. Tracks are a bit high off the ground, which is a little distracting at first, but overall the graphics are a huge improvement.

Track laying is substantially improved from the previous version of the game, as well. Most significant is the return of tunnels, one of the most maligned omissions in RT2. You can also build a bridge over another railroad or duck under an existing bridge, a feature fans of this game series have long wished for.

Gone is the grid with its limitations of tracks at only eight angles. You can now create smooth, sweeping curves at any angle you please. That said, the gradients could use some tweaking. Particularly annoying are the ramps leading to bridges. It's silly to have a 3% grade just because you're crossing a river. Likewise, I found it very difficult to create a railroad in even slightly hilly terrain that didn't resemble a roller coaster. And don't think this is a model layout design aid, either. It's impossible to force tracks to go where you want them.

Maintenance shops and service towers are now separate elements. You can't place a service tower at a depot and have a locomotive serviced while it's making its station stop. This hurts the game's realism a bit and can be annoying if, like me, you're used to the old style station expansions. The good news is that such facilities can be placed anywhere, even where there's no station, and you can demolish them to save money when they are no longer useful.

The construction and demolition tools aren't all that intuitive. To bulldoze a building, for example, you have to enter the track building interface and select the bulldozer. And industry construction is done from the station building interface. No doubt this was done to minimize the number of tool buttons in the main interface, but it feels klunky -- especially if you're used to the old RT2 interface.

While access to the controls has changed somewhat, most of the core game controls will look extremely familiar to anyone who's played RT2. Building and changing train consists works essentially the same way as in RT2, with a few excellent additions. One major change is the "auto manage" option which autmatically sets the train's consist depending on what loads are available at the station. You can select the minimum and maximum number of cars on each train, and select whether the train will carry any kind of car, just freight cargoes, or just express cargoes. You can also manually control the trains' consists. For more realism it would be nice if passenger cars were always placed together in the consist, but I'll admit that's picking a very small nit.

A couple of very handy shortcuts have also been added to train building, including the ability to copy trains. Mac users will find this process rather klunky and very un-Mac-like, but at least it's there and works. One new feature I really like is the ability to replace locomotives based on their class or age. This comes in very handy for keeping your locomotive fleet current. There's also a checkbox which will make the consist the same at all stations in the train's route. Beware, though -- the change happens as soon as you check the box and isn't undoable by unchecking the box!

The economy and stock market works essentially the same as it did in RT2. You can buy and sell shares of your railroad or your competitors, set your company's dividend, sell bonds, and sell stock. Selling stock is just as useless for raising money as it was in the previous version, even though you're now allowed two sales of stock per year instead of just one. You also still have to have a good credit rating to sell a bond.

I haven't gotten into the map editor yet, but from reading the manual, RT3 seems to have the one limitation I was afraid it would have -- you can't use maps from RT2. With the huge number of user-built maps from RT2, this is probably the biggest disappointment in the entire game. It's understandable, however, given the number of changes made to the industries and track building. Still, some sort of conversion utility would be nice for map developers so we don't have to start from scratch.

All in all, this is a fair upgrade over the previous version of the game. I'm not all that sure that this version was worth either the wait for the Mac port or the $45 price tag, but now that I have it I certainly won't be getting rid of it!

World of Subways Vol. 1: New York Underground "The Path" - PC Review

This is part overview and part help for getting started with this unique game. Winner of the "2009 Serious Game Award," Aerosoft of Germany has now produced two subway simulations, the PATH and the Berlin U-7, and they are spectacular. Be aware that some quick-overview reviews imply or say outright that WoS is an add-on for Microsoft Train Simulator; this is not so, the simulator is completely stand-alone.
I'm running WoS on a moderately powerful laptop. Written in 2008 and released in 2009, the graphics are about state-of-the-art for the time, but you still need a decent machine. This is the most impressive simulation of any kind I've ever seen, including Railworks, Flight Simulator X or Space Shuttle Mission Simulator. It is, however, likely very different from any other rail-based simulation you're likely to have seen. You have control of only one train at a time, with no switching, consist make-up, scheduling or the like. There are AI trains you can run to enhance the realism, with provisions for waiting for conflicting trains and signals, and equipment failures. You have a choice of three car types, several routes and times, and weather. You also have the choice of running one route, or working an entire shift, for which the simulation rules and scoring differ. For now, there are two add-ons, one of which is included in the current version, a 3-D Manhattan skyline, and one that adds scenarios to the basic game. While PATH is partly a subway system, it's also partly a surface railroad. The scenery is truly amazing for a 2009 game, and to an extent you have the ability to look and move around in it. For example, start a train from Newark and press the "O" key to follow it through the tunnels and across the bridges to New York City. Unless you're engaged in a free roam, you have a schedule to keep, varying numbers of passengers to take on and discharge, and widely varying speed limits. So while some say all you get to do is drive, that's all a real subway driver does, and I expect you will find that sufficiently challenging.
A number of comments in forums and elsewhere suggest that users have had difficulty getting started with WoS. The instructions were originally written in German, and while the English translation is adequate, finding the information you need to get started can be awkward. You will also occasionally encounter a German term in the game that wasn't translated, such as todman switch, the deadman's switch.I've distilled and paraphrased and just plain stolen what I needed from the instructions, and present them here to either help you or pique your curiosity.It would be a shame to miss out on this excellent simulation because of start-up difficulties. Note that you can reconfigure the commands; with a laptop, this was the only way I could make the train and station announcements play.
The simulation runs well under Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, but you will want a fairly powerful computer. If your system can run Railworks, you can probably run WoS, but you should review the specifications on their website, [...]. For earlier versions of Windows, the launcher program ([...]) works just fine, but for Windows 7 users, an updated launcher is required. Using the original launcher file in Win 7 seems to produce a memory sharing violation error, possibly due to Windows 7 running a 32-bit emulator in a 64-bit system. For some reason Aerosoft has not yet made this file available for direct download from their site, but if you request the access-share-violation version of [...] from the support forum at the maker's site at [...] you can get it in less than 24 hours; technical support is not Aerosoft's fort

(More customer reviews)Roller Coaster Tycoon has been one of the most successful of the 'tycoon' games on the market today, and it's easy to see why.RCT is probably, down and away, one of the most fun and addictive of all the tycoon games.This version of RCT3 now has all the expansions included with the main game: "Roller Coaster Tycoon 3," "RCT3: Soaked!", and "RCT3: Wild!".

I've played all three - RCT1, RCT2, and now RCT3.I enjoy all of the franchise.I've always wondered what it would be like to BE Walt Disney - even if it's just in a game.And Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Platinum does not disappoint.

Although the interface isn't quite as good as is on Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, it's still usable once you get over the rather kiddiefied look.It's the three dimensional look that gives this game a fresh slant to earlier versions.And the new coaster cam adds a bit of a thrill, although I myself only found myself using it infrequently at best.

RCT3 itself adds the coaster cam and three dimensional look and feel.RCT3: Soaked adds water park features, and RCT3: Wild adds a bit of Zoo Tycoon to RCT3.The customers look like "The Sims," and there's now obvious older and younger customers, and you must strike a balance of pleasing both.

I enjoyed my adventures with RCT3 very much.It can be very addictive.Just a little tweak can increase your park's success - or cause your failure.The scenarios are numerous, and the new three challenge in one scenario feature was a nice touch, even though I thought that some of them were a little too easy to reach the top.

The scenarios range from the tutorials (highly useful, even if you've played other Tycoon games), beginners scenarios, advanced scenarios and expert scenarios as well as a couple "Real" parks.

The new Fireworks shows feature is nice, but I found designing your own to be a bit time consuming, not to mention in-game expensive for the small return you get.

The new VIP guest feature is also a nice touch.Please the VIP, and you often get a nice bonus that lets you finish that roller coaster that you were building, or add other new features to your park.

The Coaster Design 'sandbox' feature lets you design and test coasters without using a park or scenario.This is a nice touch, and it was very helpful to be able to see what features of the roller coasters added which excitement level, what nausea level (yes, peeps still barf! :-) and what features add or subtract from those figures.

But I find myself drawn back to RCT2 over and over again.RCT3's building features are not as good as RCT2's were, and there are nowhere near as many fan-created rides, scenarios, or sets (whole parks) as there are for RCT2. Building water park items, such as dinghy slides, is now more difficult, since they must end in a swimming pool complex.

Although I'd recommend this game, even to RCT die-hards, if you already =really= enjoy RCT2, you will probably be disappointed by RCT3.And it's really recommended to newbies, especially since they finally got the game and expansions in one pack.Although Chris Sawyer denies working on RCT4, my guess is that you'll see it eventually.Until then, Happy Tycooning!
