Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2 (Playstation 2) Review

Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2
Average Reviews:

I never would have bought this game for myself.I can't decide if it was out of selfish or generous intent, but my 8 year old son bought this game for me for my birthday.I am so lucky. He and I are huge fans of x-games and good video games on any platform, but I had no interest in this title (prior to owning it).
I've been playing video games for over 20 years and even compensating for the state of technology at any given time, this may be, in my opinion, the all-time best game ever.
It is so much fun, so real-feeling...I always thought the "lines" (path a person chooses through the course) were a commentator's concept, but with this game you see them, feel them.
It is incredible.Makes me feel like I can actually do the tricks in real life.I hopped on my son's skateboard in the living room and nearly killed myself as a result.
Graphics, gameplay, sound, music, cohesiveness, variety and options, controls, concept, execution, this game has it all.
Hopefully some day I will be bored with this game and can go back and finish Warcraft 3 and Max Payne which I had recently bought and was playing on the PC before this.

My favorite PS2 game so far!Mirra 2 is definitely the best extreme game yet.The incredible size of the levels is amazing. With the awesome trick system and all the challenges it keeps you coming back for more in a big way. There's also a Park Editor which lets you create any kind of level you want.I've spent hours and hours making my own levels--it's like a game in itself!Another cool thing is the riders have both competition gear (helmets, pads, etc.) and street clothing.Another really cool thing is one of the multiplayer games is a contest to see who can wipe out the worst. It's hilarious watching your guy get run over by trains and cars and even golf carts!
I'm gonna be playing this game for a long time.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 Review

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow! If you've played the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, no doubt you were amazed. Well this one improves on the original ten-fold.
First of all, there are three new characters, including two of the godfathers of skate; Rodney Mullen and Steve Caballero (who's base stats are amazing to start with!). Also present is Eric Koston, who was recently voted best all-around skater. If you saw him in this year's X-Games, you'll know why.
Secondly, you now have the ability to create your own skateparks! There are a good number of pieces to choose from and the way things can be linked together is very nice. There are also a ton of pre-made parks in the editor that will give you ideas. Many of these are excellent in their own right and they can also be manipulated.
Thirdly, there are a TON of new tricks. All of the ones from the previous game are here, but each player can have two sets of tricks, which can be accessed by double-tapping the grab and flip buttons. This adds an incredible amount of versatility to runs and can help you to have more original lines, which is really important in contest events. Also, the inclusion of manuals is very cool. This means that instead of just normally approaching an object to trick off of, you can manual to it and this gives you constant points. Imagine some of the combos that could be achieved! It takes some getting used to, especially since it means you move more slowly and you have to manually keep your boarder's balance (no pun intended).
Fourthly, the new parks are very cool. Marseilles is the one that was included in the demo for the game, so many of you know how cool that park is already. Venice beach is nice, too. It has a lot of vert areas and even some vagrants to ollie over, I kid you not! People might miss some of the original parks, but with the park editor, you might be able to make a reasonable facsimile.
Fifthly, there is a create-a-skater mode. While it doesn't add too much to the game, it is still nice to see a skater with your name.
On top of all these factors, they've changed the level objectives quite a bit. Now instead of collecting tapes to progress, you must complete certain objectives for money. The money you earn can be used towards buying new boards, buying new tricks (including grabs, flips and specials) and boosting your created-player's stats. Also, as usual, the music in the game is fresh and should appeal to fans of several different styles. The multiplayer modes are standard, but just as awesome as before.
Well, I could say more, but what is there to say that hasn't already been said? Activision and Neversoft have really outdone themselves and continue to show a great deal of respect for the consumers. This is an incredible game in every aspect and should be in the home of every video game fan on the planet! HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE!

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 Review

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The legend continues as Activision brings out it's newest installment in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4. Unlike it's predeccessor (don't think I spelled that right), the latest installment has a HUGE gap between #4 and #3. In this version, when you start career mode there is NO time clock what so ever! You are free to roam the level as much as you like, but when you stop and ask or talk to someone, they give you an objective to complete, THEN the time clock starts. The goals varies, sometimes it's to stop a security guard from busting all your skate buddies to copying another skater's tricks to the infamous S-K-A-T-E or C-O-M-B-O goal. And the level design is VERY realistic. no more is there a perfectly smooth sidewalk, now you can see that there are scratches, bumps and even scrapes and openings in the sidewalk. The levels also are very realistic as well. There won't be halfpipes and ramps all in the middle of the road. For example, in the College level, there are no (like I said) halfpipes or ramps or rails right smack in the middle of the street. The game is based on real life. And when you get all level goals for a level with a character, they bring in their own ramp or halfpipe or object to add to the level. And the cheats...well you have to find them out yourself. To sum this game up, a perfect ten, no flaws what so ever. If you want a good sports game this year for Christmas, this is it. Strap on your helmet and pads, it's gonna be a bumpy ride...

Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Review

Tony Hawk's Underground 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is absolutely awful, I would actually rather study than play it.It's one of the worst pieces of trash I've played in a long time & I'm an AVID Tony Hawk supporter (until now that is).

First of all, 2/3 of the skaters that have been with the game from the beginning are gone, only the most mainstream skaters made the cut.OG skaters like Rowley, Reynolds, and JT have been replaced by the likes of Steve-O, Jesse James, & even Bigfoot.

Second, the storyline has essentially turned the game into an episode of "Viva La Bam".Half of the goals don't involve skating of any type and simply play on the "skateboarding-is-punk-so-we-destroy-things-'cuz-that's-the-cool-skater-thing-to-do" mantra that seems to be pervading the youth skate culture. If you've skated for any length of time this comes off as a desperate & pathetic attempt to make some money off a crappy game that caters to all the 13 year olds who think Bam Margera is the greatest.

Lastly, as if the pop culture influence that permeates the gameplay isn't insulting enough, there is A video at the end.No, not 1 video per pro, A video featuring all of them. They each throw 3 moves & it's over.

When the Tony Hawk series began the games actually influenced pop culture; now they're doing just the opposite & letting what's trendy dictate the direction of the games.I used to buy all the sequels without question, but after seeing the previews for this game I decided to rent it first (thank goodness I did). You could do a lot better with $50 than buy this game; like buy some real skateboard gear.

Mat Hoffman Pro BMX 2 Review

Mat Hoffman Pro BMX 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While not nearly as well known as Tony Hawk, Mat Hoffman brings his own unique excitement to the world of extreme sports. The same holds true for the star's video games as well; far fewer people have played Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX than Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, but that isn't to say the game isn't solid in its own right. In fact, it's pretty damn good. And like the THPS series, MHPBMX 2 offers an incremental upgrade in gameplay and the obligatory boost in visuals to make the series better than ever. Mat Hoffman, the game and the athlete, will never escape the shadow of Tony Hawk, but that doesn't mean he should be ignored. Read on and find out why.
Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2's career mode is experienced via a Road Trip (no, not like the one with Tom Green). Imagine a charter bus where you go from city to city showing off your dance moves ... or in this case, your biking skills. There are ten riders in Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2, six of which return from the original cast. New to the roster are Seth Kimbrough, Cory Kastazio, Nate Wessel, Ruben Alcantara, and Day Smith. Each rider is nicely detailed and comes with a fully customizable ride. You will travel across America, hitting Las Vegas, New Orleans, Boston, Chicago, and more. Each city level not only has its own distinct look and feel, but also specific goals you have to complete. To give the Road Trip mode a little more flavor, players are treated to various behind-the-scenes videos from the Mat Hoffman Pro BMX 2 tour. You will see videos specific to the rider you selected.
Other playing modes include Session (which gives you three different time limits to do tricks) and Freeride. The latter is a great way for beginners to learn and master combos and manuals. More robust this time around is the multiplayer mode, which has over six different multiplayer games including the requisite Horse and Split-Screen, and cool additions like Half-Pipe Hell and Tag.
New to the series is the inclusion of flatland tricks, which are executed from manual positions. These closely resemble tricks like handstands in Tony Hawk. Flatland tricks are not only cool to look at, but also earn you a lot of trick points. The key to a successful flatland trick is balance. I was only able to perform a handful of flatland tricks including a backwards steamroller, boomerang, dump truck, and a front pogo.
For the most part, gameplay is pretty straightforward. Most of your time will be spent playing the Road Trip mode. Each of the eight cities has three tiers of objectives starting at Amateur moving to Semi-Pro then Professional. Each tier has four objectives making for 12 per city. As you complete goals, you earn road trip points. These points can be used to unlock more levels or cities. In addition, players can unlock new songs, clothes and bikes for their riders as well.
On paper, this is a tried and true formula that has been used by many games since the first Tony Hawk. Unfortunately this is where Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2 loses some of its luster. I have no problems with the objective-based parts of the game. What I do have a problem with is the monotonous nature of them. There's too much of an emphasis on fetching items rather than performing tricks and getting rewarded for doing them well. The trick based objectives are fine in the game (some of them are a little too challenging) but for the most part, they work. What bores you to tears is the trivial riding around, scavenging for hidden objects, activating switches, and knocking over things.
On a more positive note, the level design is topnotch. Developer Rainbow Studios has managed to create challenging levels that look great. What's distinguishing about all the levels is how the various stunt areas flow together seamlessly. When a game lets you create lines of combinations this easily, it's extraordinary.
From a visual standpoint, the game looks a lot better on Xbox than on PS2. Granted the PS2 does look very good, the textures and shading on the Xbox just look better. Even the animations are smoother. The coolest aspect is without a doubt the crash animations. Remember how outrageous the crash animations were in ATV Offroad Fury or Motocross Madness? It's great to see Rainbow brought its expertise in that area to Mat Hoffman. Trust me, you'll wince and cringe after some of the wipeouts.
Can you can can? Surprisingly, the weakest aspect of Mat Hoffman Pro BMX 2 is the soundtrack. Where the original Mat Hoffman had cool bands like Outkast, Jurassic 5, and Bad Brains, Pro BMX 2's line up is rather dull. The good thing for Xbox owners is the ability to listen to music that you've put on your hard drive.
Even with its shortcomings, Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2 is worth checking out. Granted the Road Trip mode can get kinda frustrating and boring, but experiencing the various levels and checking out the behind-the-scenes video footage is almost worth the aggravation. The new flatland tricks are a definite plus and the ability to use your own music rocks.
The Lowdown: Activision's secondary poster boy delivers with improved visuals and a plethora of new tricks. BMX fans once again have something to be excited about.
Pros: Great visuals; smooth animations; tight control; flatland tricks and user controlled music.
Cons: [bad] soundtrack; tedious challenges.
BIG DAN's OVERALL RATING: 7.4/10
Good game, but it's just not as appealing as skateboarding.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 Review

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a Tony Hawk Pro Skater fan for years, every game seems to get better than the last and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 is no exception, the addition of the spine transfer is genious, it allows for much more interesting lines and combo's than ever before. I find myself playing this game almost every day, the goals are much harder than Tony Hawk 3 and also alot more fun. unfortunately the PC version has many flaws that make me almost wish i haden't purchased it. in the bigger levels like san fransisco and kona i get alot of lag (im running a 2.5 ghz system w/128mb geforce T1-4200 w/8x agp and 1gb of ddr ram) even on the lowest setting 640 x 480 i experience it. the only way to get rid of it is to use distance fog which makes finding the skate and combo letters nearly impossible, not to mention distance fog is just plain sucky. setting the spin and switch buttons can't be done because you are forced to have them be shared as 1 button and this can't be changed.
Online play is the worst, you have to download and login to use gamespy arcade instead of how thps3 was where you had a lobby built into the game. so your constantly starting and shutting down your game just so you can find a decent room with people to skate with... not cool at all. the least they could have done was have a "skip intro" option like 3 did. oh and did i mention you can't kick people from your game if your the host? so if you find you have a cheater in your game (which will happen in the future) your forced to play with them.
To sum it all up the game itself is fun but has very little replay value once you finish all the goals due to the ... online play. ...

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland Review

Tony Hawk's American Wasteland
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Seven years ago, skateboarding became a game genre with Pro Skater. Every year after that, new additions and refined gameplay kept me playing all four Pro Skaters and both Undergrounds. In all of those years, nothing has impressed me more than Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Somehow Neversoft has done it; they've made the perfect skating game.

I'll skip telling the story, since it's basically the same "get respect" crap that was in the Underground games, and also because the gameplay has been refined to the point of perfection. Neversoft saw it coming--they've outdone themselves and done everything to skateboarding that they could. So other than a few interesting additions to the skateboarding formula (like board stalls, bert slides, and parkour), and the ability to ride and trick on BMX bikes, the coolest addition is the free-sprawling recreation of Los Angeles that serves as the world of THAW. The city is divided into sections, which takes away from some of the huge feel, but I still felt overwhelmed at first by the size of the world. This world is so much fun to skate in that I basically neglected the fact that the story mode goals are terribly easy and repetitive, but serve their purpose in unlocking huge portions of an even larger world.

The controls are spot-on, the combos are still fun, and that's what keeps me coming back to this series. As a note to Neversoft, I don't care about epic storylines and I'm happy with the removal of Bam Margera from the story in general. I'm pleased, as a fan of this series, that I finally have a Hawk game that has the moves, the good controls, and the levels (well, the level) that can keep me playing for another year or two until another boarding game rolls up.

Tony Hawk's Underground Review

In order to keep the series from running out of steam, Activision decided add a "story mode" to the game. You start out as an unknown everyday skater who dreams of turning pro. There are plenty of "story scenes", starring you as the main character. As you progress through the game, new levels open up, and the drama of becoming a pro skater unfolds before you.All of this is a little bit cheesy, but nevertheless makes for an entertaining game to play.
Let me hit on the positives first. The "story mode" of the game does add a decent amount to the game experience.I found myself continuing to play so that I could find out what happens next. Also, the graphics are more detailed and the sounds are taken up a couple of notches as well. The levels are huge with lots of obstacles and spines to skate. All your favorite pros are back, with a couple of new ones thrown in too. However, the only levels you can play with one of the regular pro skaters are the levels you have opened up in story mode.Just so you know.
And now the negatives...
Not much to say here. While the story mode adds to the game, it isn't realistic. The same thing goes for quite a few of the "goals" you have to achieve. They have more in common with Grand Theft Auto than skateboarding. That aspect is probably the strangest part of the game.I guess the creators wanted some stuff in there that would appeal to that type of audience.
Anyway, I would rate this game a 9 out of possible 10.

A new series, walking into the mouth of a lion, skate is one of the most innovative and fresh games in the genera.A new control scheme paired with amazingly detailed graphics and challenging game play make for a sure buy if you're a fan of any extreme game series.

First and foremost, if you have a obsessive personality or are a perfectionist stay away from this game, because you'll not be getting any sleep. For everyone else the new flickit controls have a very hard learning curve, but after 15 minutes you should get the hang of it.A few problems with the controls plague this game, its super frustrating to hit the tiniest bump and have your skater turn around in the opposite direction but this is minor in a sea full of awesome.

The story doesn't have a lot of variety but what it does have is entertaining and enough to keep you going to the end.

Overall a solid game with room for great improvement that will leave it on the top of the ramp compared to everything else in the long run.Go pick this up if you've enjoyed other skating games, or if you want to try something new that will leave you having great times for a long time.

This game is awesome. SERIOUSLY! Its got a bit of blood in it when you crash. Some of the songs have a few bad words in it. But oh well. :P
I got hooked on this game for 4 months. Then I beat the game. It has awesome graphics. You can even get off your board and spray your own tag xD

Its got killer songs. If your a Rock fan you should seriously buy this game. It has songs by Jimmy Eat World, The Explosions, and a few others.
I've blocked out the rap songs just because I don't like rap. :P Then they've got a few oldies. Like Frank Sanatra and Johnny Cash.

You can even make your own tricks! The more flips and ollies you put in there, the higher the points! But they're really hard to land. You'd have to get some major air to pull it off.

The story line is the best. You get "abducted" by 2 "masked" men while your showing off in your neighborhood. You wake up and sitting next to you are the biggest skater stars in the world! Then one of the masked men pulls out a chainsaw and almost stabs you. ROFL. But it turns out to be Bam Margera (aka The Idiot lol) Then Tony Hawk pops up and explains this whole "World Destruction Tour" You have to complete all these goals to get major points. You pass through like 6 major cities: (in Order of game)
Boston, Barcelona, Berlin, Australia, New Orleans, and Skatetopia (I don't know if Skatetopia is real or not :P)
But while your pulling off some major air in the Story Mode, you gotta destroy stuff. DUH!

Overall this is a seriously awesome game. GO BUY IT!

My 5-year old is obsessed with the Hawkman, and so this was one of our first games for the Wii.I was a bit nervous because I've found past Tony Hawk games tricky for me, let alone for him, to master.

Imagine my delight when we started playing this. It's just outright fun: the characters are funny, the maps are cool with lots of different paths and shortcuts, the music is pretty sweet, and the gameplay is downright addictive. And best of all, my son picked it up lickety split.Heck, it's taken months of playing it before I've managed to get half as good as him at the trick courses!

It's the simplicity of the controls that makes this a perfect game when you don't want to cramp your hands or brain trying to remember some convoluted button sequence to do JUST the right move in JUST the right place at JUST the right time. And the difficulty ramps up perfectly, opening up courses of increasing difficulty and length as you go.

I've read some lousy reviews of this from magazines and critics.Glad to see some real-world players giving this game the props it deserves.Bring on Downhill Jam 2!
