If, after you sink into these 6 classic Atari arcade games, you start to smell pizza or hear other voices, don't panic. It's just your mind bringing back memories of when you first played them. THAT'S how good these recreations are.
Compared to today's 3D arcade first-person shooters, these games might seem primitive but they can claim something that modern games can't: anyone and everyone played them. The controls were simple, usually consisting of a single knob or joystick and a couple buttons. You dropped in a quarter and you played.
When you went to the bowling alley or pizza parlor, you saw senior citizens standing shoulder to shoulder with teens at the PONG game. A father and daughter might be huddled in front of Tempest. A child barely tall enough to reach the trackball and buttons on Missile Command has already finished 12 levels. A grandmother has just been introduced to Asteroids and now, there's no tearing her away. A small crowd is gathering around the Super Breakout game because someone has just cleared a third wall of bricks on the first ball. And a weekend lawn warrior is exacting revenge on his leaf-munching adversaries in Centipede.
Those games live again, as does a feeling for what it was like to have lived back then, in Atari Arcade Hits. In addition to the exact recreations of 6 of Atari's landmark arcade games, the CD ROM includes a wealth of extra material including photos, promotional materials and over a half hour of Atari founder Nolan Bushnell reminiscing about the times. That segment was actually taped at the former Andy Capp's Saloon where the world was introduced to the first coin-operated PONG.
NOTE: Games requiring a knob or "paddle" controller are best played with a good quality trackball like the Logitech Marble Mouse Trackball, which I've reviewed elsewhere on Amazon.com
