On-rails shooters usually tend to end up becoming mundane and boring after a while, but as of late, the Wii has seen a couple quality ones, such as Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and House of the Dead: Overkill. Now from EA, we get Dead Space: Extraction, a prequel to the spectacular action/horror/shooter from last year that graced the higher powered consoles. For the Wii, the Dead Space world has been translated from a survival horror game to an on-rails shooter almost flawlessly, and the game is packed with enough action, scares, and shooting action that one can't help but enjoy what they find here.If you've played the original Dead Space, you'll recognize quite a bit of what you find here: from the areas and environments to the weapons, Dead Space: Extraction is simple enough to get into even for those who may be unfamiliar with the original. It should also be noted that for being a Wii game, it looks simply spectacular, and the necromorphs look just as nasty here as they have before. The game's story is enthralling and as you progress through the game further and unlock some wonderfully utilized motion comics, you just get sucked in even more. The only real flaw with Dead Space: Extraction is that aiming isn't always quite as easy or accurate as you might hope for.Still though, as far as on-rails shooters go, Dead Space: Extraction is one of the best around right now that you'll play, and even if you're unfamiliar with the original game, this is definitely worth your time.

Dead Space Extraction tells the untold story of the Aegis VII Colony through a handful of survivors battling to reach the orbiting USG Ishimura amidst a horrific infection and the initial invasion by a violent alien race known as Necromorphs. As these survivors' allies mysteriously fall victim to dementia, it becomes clear that protecting a young girl granting them a bizarre immunity may be their only hope for survival in a struggle that could have implications for all of humanity.

Gameplay
Although designed to preserve the feel of the action of the original game, gameplay in Extraction is also quite unique. First, the playerperspective has been changed from third, to first-person, placing allthe action right in front of you. Also, Extraction is a 'rail shooter,'meaning a shooter game where most of the action engaged in and paths followedare programmed into the mission play, instead of the freeform wanderingability built into the considerably larger Next-Gen and PC Dead Spacerelease. The combination of these two changes funnels the players focusonto the combat options available in the game. In dealing with the dangerof the alien Necromorphs swarming the game space, Dead Space Extractionutilizes the precision of the Wii Remote in variety of ways. Weapons likethe Plasma Cutter can dispatch these enemies from a distance by takingadvantage of the remote's pointing targeting ability, while a quick wavecan activate weapons like the Ripper, a guidable spinning saw blade. TheWii Remote is also handy for picking up items and hurling them at enemiesusing the power of Kinesis.

Other gameplay changes include new play modes. The most notable of these is the inclusion of a two player co-op play option. This allows an additional player to drop in or out of the action as he/she chooses. The game rebalances the opposition in these cases to make sure that the gameplay doesn't become too easy. In addition, Extraction also features a Challenge mode in which after certain sections of the game are cleared, areas within those sections are unlocked for bonus arcade style action where players build up points linked to how many Necromorphs are destroyed. Taken together all these changes add up to more action, more fun and more Dead Space for players on the Wii.
