Patrician 3 Review

Patrician 3

Who knew that being a member of the Hanseatic League would make for a fun game?Anyone who figured out that zoning can be fun (SimCity), or pretending to have a real life can be fun (The Sims) knows that the topic can be unusual if the gameplay is there. In fact, games that aren't clones of other games are a welcome sight.Patrician 3 is a fun game on a topic few would expect to see in a game.

This is a trading sim.You start in Luebeck in 1345, with one ship, and build an empire. You buy more ships, set up trade routes, build manufacturing facilities, and try to keep the people of your hometown supplied with all of their wants and needs.Patrician 3 is probably most like Machiavelli: the Prince (AKA Merchant Prince).

The graphics are fine, once you recognize that their purpose is to present information. There's a map of the North Sea, and a map for each town. The battle graphics are serviceable, but don't look for 3-D like Pirates of the Carribean, there is an overhead map with icons.

Gameplay is what Patrician 3 offers. As one reviewer said, this is an oddly compelling game.If you like the genre, this is a "one-more-turn" experience on the order of Civ 3, though Patrician 3 does not have the replayability that Civ does. You can shuffle what cities are good at, and there is a campaign game, but each successive Patrician 3 game tends to be too similar to be playing it week after week.Nonetheless, you'll have plenty of fun before you tire of it, and you'll come back to it months later unlike so many other games.

Beware, however, that Patrician 3 is not supported on many laptops.I installed and ran the game fine, but when I tried to play again I could not initialize the graphics.Ascaron is very clear that they do not support laptops because of the limited graphics "cards" these typically have.

There are not too many changes from Partician 2, but this is a fine game for any new player who likes trade-and-build games, and any Patrician 2 fan who doesn't need a major overhaul to justify upgrading.

Chocolatier Review

Chocolatier

Chocolatier puts you in the position of a chocolate empire builder. You've been tasked by one half of competing sisters who experienced irreconcilable differences and went their own way.

At its heart, the original Chocolatier is a trading game.It reminds me a little bit of the Tradewinds series of games, but has its own flair and quite a different challenge. The story version puts you in the heart of the rift between the two sisters fighting over the family chocolate business. You are given a secret recipe and a factory to corner the chocolate world. You journey from port to port seeking deals on the ingredients you need while hawking your chocolate bars, squares, infusions, and truffles. There are special ingredients unique to different continents and even special "cacao" beans in certain cities for rare recipes.Over time you gain opportunities to purchase more factories, as well as acquiring candy shops.

There is a mini game involved each time which involves "shooting" the ingredients onto a common pan which your factory line then puts together.Depending on how quick you can shoot the recipe's ingredients onto the assembly line determines how many chocolates that particular factory makes. This is fun on one hand and maddening on the other. It's a great challenge to your brain, but the positioning of the "next few ingredients" going into the hopper could have been in a better location. It makes it hard to anticipate the next ingredient in order to speed up your firing.

All in all this gives several days of enjoyment in one sitting as you finish the storyline. It also offers a continuous play mode once you've done the story. It fails to reach a five because it suffers a bit in re-playability.At $6.99 this is a great value though and definitely deserves a spot on the casual game roster of people who love trading strategy, empire building games with a bit of light puzzle solving.

**This was compatible with my Windows 7 for those who may have that concern.**

Patrician IV Review

Patrician IV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Patrician was the head of the European trading organization called the Hanseatic League, which came to power during the Middle Ages in Northern Europe, yielding as much might as royalty or religious leaders of the era. In the game you can defy destiny by starting out as a small stall trader and, if you are savvy in the laws of economic and trade, rise to the head of the most powerful merchant organization of its time. Manage your fleet, buy goods low and sell them high, optimize your trade routes, defy greedy royalty and opportunistic pirates, as you try to etch out a profitable living. This game, while not casual to play by any stretch, features a very realistic economy and should appeal to anyone that has enjoyed the Settlers, Anno or even earlier Patrician titles.

Product Description:
Based on the franchise that has sold more than two million copies and won the hearts of gamers worldwide, Patrician IV will challenge players to rise up the merchant ranks to become the leader of a burgeoning shipping empire during the late Middle Age in Northern Europe - a time where success in trade could be as rewarding and influential as the power bestowed by noble birth, religious position or political clout. Patrician IV's authentic supply and demand-based trading system allows players to grow their business and head out to the high seas to form trading routes with other Hanseatic cities negotiating better prices for the buying and selling of goods. Sea battles keep the pace action-backed, as players combat pirates and enemy players.
