Battlefield Vietnam Redux Review

Battlefield Vietnam Redux

Wow! This is a really fun game. By the time I had this game in my hands, I was in gaming heaven. You see, here's how the story started: I just brought home Battlefield 1942. And I saw at the back of the CD case, a little thing about Battlefield Vietnam. At first I wasn't interested, then I went online and thought that maybe I should have a look at the website. Well, I found out lots of information about the game. Here's the information: You can try out over 20 vehicles (extra in the redux, my hero), you can fight in the gloomy jungles of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Who knows, you might meet a NVA (North Vietnam Army)soldier with an armed machine gun. Or you can get on one of those helicopters, those aren't the greatest air vehicles in the game, but it is so easy to hit those helicopters in an F4 Phantom. Yeah, you can fly those jets, they have Guided missiles so watch your tail. The guided missiles are neat! Two shots on a helicopter and it's no more! F-4 Phantoms rock! Or you might try out a few ground vehicles. How about that tank over there? Or maybe that M.U.T.T? (they are jeeps armed with rocket launchers, with rockets in them. It's a 3 passenger jeep) Or, how about a sidearm and some soldiers? You can use over many different weapons. You can get a machine gun, a sniper, or a bazooka. Same with NVA, only their weapons look different. Bored of those battle noises? Then how about play some music? In vehicles you can play songs from Jefferson Airplane, The Box Tops, Count Five, and more fun tracks (including the all time favorite "I fought the Law") Or you can play songs from your own computer (sometimes it can be too far) Also other passengers can hear it while you play. I was playing online when I got on a helicopter with someone else flying it, he was playing "War" on the helicopter and I could hear it!

So Battlefield Vietnam has some interesting things envolved in it. The graphics looks like the 3D pictures on the official Vietnam Website. If you can run 1942, then you might be able to run Vietnam. I was a little nervous that it might not run on my computer. But if you have an old XP and it works, then listen to this: When you enter your first battle, it will act very slow so don't be selling the disk, yet. However, it will go faster the more you change options and play. Well, don't be too suprised with the glitches as I shall warn you about. Snipers are one of the problems. In Battlefield 1942, you can snipe someone in the head and then they die, but I had to make two head shots to kill someone. Huh? Weird glitch. But here's another thing, the AI are kind of both stupid and smart. When the AI fly helis, when they are near enemy ground, they escape the helicopter (even the pilot) and the helicopter isn't damaged. And sometimes you don't get a chance to get out before you get killed. And they rarely stop for you. But.. people read this, the radio communication is better than Battlefield 1942. Because in 1942, you order them something, they don't listen, but in Battlefield Vietnam, they respond! So people, if you need a helicopter ride, then in the communication say "Requesting a pickup." And they'll listen! So you see here, there are some good things and bad things about Battlefield Vietnam.

Now let's talk about the weapons. Each side has it's unique weapons (U.S gets M16 and N.V.A gets an AK-17. I just hope I typed it the right way). Now each side has its sidearms and classes. You can be a scout with over two different snipers to pick off with! Or an assault guy with the M16 (My Mom did fire one but never fought in the Vietnam war and she said the M16 in the game looks like the real one!) If you don't like the M16 then in some maps how about a Mossburg 500 shotgun? Or maybe the M16 sniper? Hmmm... I fought the L.A.W? Yeah, you can use the L.A.W as an anti-tank weapon! (get it?) And you can trigger a B.B? (Boucing Betty) when you're a scout! It unleashes poisonous gas so be careful. Wait, there are some tricks to play on the U.S. You can plant booby traps for enemies and sticks. The sticks work by someone stepping in the stick, gets impaled in it, and dies! And you can pick up and use kits from dead soldiers.

Now we talk about the Redux version. You get the same old maps in the orignal version, but for multiplayer you can pick 4 new maps! Wow! And you get a bonus disk. You can get patches immediatly in the disk and you can get the WWII mod for Vietnam! Yahoo! A free mod. Awesome! And it's a lot easier replacing bugs and stuff with the Redux! And the online play is just a click away with the Redux.

So you see here, if you are looking for a good game, don't get Battlefield Vietnam, but Battlefield Vietnam Redux!P.S It isn't an expansion. I'll see you on the battlefield!

Battlefield 2 Review

Battlefield 2

I read S.Hogan's 'irritatinginferior' review and felt compelled to add my two cents.
I think he didn't give the game enough time or just isn't very good at it because i'm having a lot more fun with it than he is. Vehicle transport is a big part of the game and sure its annoying if a bunch of guys on your team leave without you, but you can request a vehicle drop from your commander or wait for a new vehicle to spawn, or... move on foot.

Problems he had with identifying enemy units in-game are no longer an issue, anyone within a reasonable distance from you in the game.. say 40 feet or so, has their name and color to indicate friend or foe, at all times, you no longer have to aim at someone to find out. Not to mention the uniforms and skin color are usually different.

Some games are dominated by those who get to the planes and helicopters first, but Ive found thats only the case if your playing on a smaller map (and if the pilots are good). With enough players on the map there will be too many ground targets for air vehicles to keep up with and they will ultimately be shot down. There are some very skilled pilots that play this game and they take it very seriously. If you enjoy flight simulators this would probably be worth a go. Ive seen some really impressive videos of pilots in this game, there are several different types of jets and helicopters, if you can't fly very well but want to fight from above I would suggest getting a joystick or just playing as a second gunner.

The game can be a bit choppy at times, mostly dependent on your system. Check the system requirements before purchasing the game, this will not run very well on older systems, but does take full advantage of some of the newest video cards available. I recommend at least 1GB ram to play, 2GB would of course be better but not necessary.

camping or 'baseraping' is a problem as stated, but thats due to the nature of the game. If the enemy is taking over a base you might not want to spawn there because of it, but if you think youve got a shot at stopping them then you might try to spawn there at your own risk. No one likes to die right after they spawn but you can play smart and minimize this.

Gulf of Oman is a fun map, but not my favorite. Seemingly everyones favorite is 'Strike at Karkand'. Its played more than the others anyways. Overall there is a good variety of maps, with all the expansions (special forces expansion comes with the deluxe edition, there are two other expansions downloadable from EA online, Armored Fury and Euro Force) there are plenty of maps to choose from and most offer a variety of gameplay options, meaning it wont always be the same fight, same choke points etc. most of the maps are pretty good, there are some custom maps available as well.

The sniper does seem pretty weak compared to some other games but I think its balanced pretty well. If you enjoy playing as a sniper it wont be the strength of the gun that annoys you but the lack of a extra-zoom feature. there is only one standard zoom length for the sniper rifle. This of course varies between each sniper rifle and there are 2 unlockable ones available as well.

Speaking of unlockable weapons, there are a total of 14 unlockable weapons, 2 for each 'kit' wether it be for the assault kit, sniper kit, anti-tank kit etc. The unlock weapons do seem to be better than the original but they all have different specifications so some people prefer the stock weapons, I am not one of those people.

S.Hogan said the only difference with special forces was zip lines and jetskis, but this is not true. With special forces comes the addition of some new armies including British SAS, Russian Spetsnaz and Insurgent forces. They each have their own set of weapons, some weapons overlap but the difference in stock weapons for various army types (including the USMC, MEC, and Chinese of the original game) is pretty good. Not only is there a fairly realistic variation of weapons per army but vehicles as well. As a British SAS soldier you would be more likely to drive a Desert Raider buggy around, whereas if you were an insurgent force you would drive a pickup truck with a turret gun.
Special forces also introduces Grapple hooks and Zip lines. Night Vision on a select few maps, as well as tear gas as a standard weapon with the support kit. (The gas mask becomes critical in those situations.) There are also new maps with special forces, and new vehicles etc.

"Incredibly slow loading times between games" This is absolutely right. Some servers will play a map 2 times then load a new map, the load times occurs between switching maps, so it is wise to play servers that will stick with a few maps with lots of rounds between load times. Some servers play just one map all the time, so there is a very minimal load time. On average it seems to take about 4-5 minutes to load up a game, the games last anywhere between 5 - 40 minutes depending on various factors.

"So, I payed $40 for 2 days worth of pointless gameplay. " This guy obviously didnt put enough time into the game. With a little practice and getting to know the maps/kits/weapons/vehicles, squad/commander tactics im sure he would have found it at least a litte more enjoyable, personally I can't get enough.

Atari: The 80 Classic Games Review

Atari: The 80 Classic Games
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Enough has been written about the games and their faithful recreations (all the way down to the infamous 2600 game Easter eggs planted in "Adventure" and "Missile Command" by disgruntled uncredited programmers) that adding anything else would be redundant. They really are spot on.

The real treasure is leafing (mousing?) through all that bonus material. First, there's box art and instruction manuals for all of the 2600 games as well as the manual for the Atari Video Computer System (the console itself) and a page from a mail order catalog offering the original package that included 3 Game Program cartridges (all yours for just $299.98).

The arcade nostalgia features marketing and promotional materials including flyers, collector pins, TV and radio commercial scripts, advertising slicks, covers from shop manuals and an ad for the CAT (Computer Assisted Troubleshooter) Box, used by former pinball repairmen to maintain this new breed of barroom entertainment.

For history buffs, a sizeable excerpt from the book "PHOENIX: The Fall and Rise of Videogames" by Leonard Herman encapsulates Atari's history, from a 2-man operation to market dominance and eventual collapse, only to rise again as the new name for the company formerly known as Infogrames.

As if that's not enough, there's the man himself: Atari founder Nolan Bushnell in over a half-hour of video reminiscing about the video game industry, taped at the former location of Andy Capp's Tavern where the world's first PONG game began gobbling every quarter in the San Francisco Bay area.

So, calling this CD-ROM a "collection" is like calling a Ferrari Testarossa a nice little Italian car. It's much more. It's a treasure chest, and your CD-ROM drive is the key.

Battlefield 1942 Review

Battlefield 1942

I'll spare you all the usual blurb about this game and will simply sumarise by saying this:
- it's terrific fun.I mean it - it completely immerses you and makes you feel like you're there
- you can do whatever you want in each of the missions, including sitting back and watching your friends go in and try the attack themselves (and sometimes succeed!)
- the graphics, sound and gameplay are rivetting: you feel scared - as you should in this kind of game

I loved it, finished it and am playing it again.Thoroughly recommended...

Happy shopping

Atari Anniversary Edition Review

Atari Anniversary Edition
Average Reviews:

Now you can relive those carefree days when you had a pocketful of quarters! This doesn't come with 6, but 12, 12(!) classic arcade games!See what happened in the years these games came out in the instruction booklets included in this package: Mount St. Helens eruption (uh-oh), popularity of polyester suits, the death of Elvis, Governer George Wallace assassinated and paralyzed, Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" becomes a hit on the charts, MASH, Don McLean's "American Pie", A mass wedding for 2075 couples at the Unification Church's Sun Myung Moon, the opening of EPCOT in WDW, and a ton more!
One CD holds 6 popular classics: Centipede (Shoot up those bugs and spiders before they get you.Don't get yourself ambushed!), Missile Command (Hurry up and stop these missles from destroying the major cities!), Pong (You've got head-to-head tennis.Don't take your eye off the ball!), Super Breakout (Can you really wipe out all the bricks without losing more than 3 baseballs??),Asteroids (That's a cool game, but why isn't it in color?), and finally Tempest (Oh gawsh, that game is hard!).You need more? There's a second CD waiting for you which contains other classics, though more forgotten: Millipede, Crystal Castles, Warlords (Now THAT'S a duel!), Battlezone (Hope Saddam Hussein doesn't catch you playing that game!Reminds me of the war in the Gulf 10 years ago.), Gravitar (You'll need a special joystick for that game.Otherwise, it is nearly impossible to play, Asteroids Deluxe (Want more asteroid action?Take that!), and uhhhh, that's about it for the games.
Oh, and there are very unique and special features: video interviews, wallpaper, photos of old atari cartridges and artwork, and graphic enhancement (Just click on the arrow next to the game of your choice.)You can also customize the settings of the game: increase or decrease your number of lives, choose the game languages in English, French, Spanish, or German.Or else, if you feel like it, would you enable test mode?
Another feature is that you get just about EVERY sound effect in 44 KHZ MONO wave files.Neat, huh?You can even use them as standard computer and internet sound files! If you're tired of those standard computer sound files (like AOL for example), you can pick one of these video game sound effects of your choice.Cool!
Will Hasbro make anymore emulation from arcade games?Let's find out as time goes by.
ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED FOR EVERY COMPUTER, ESPECIALLY LAPTOPS!

This guide is very well-written and structured with comprehensive coverage of everything you would need to know if you're trying to go for 1000 gamerscore (for the 360 players out there).I read this guide front to back and did not find a single mistake. The guide also contains some very good information regarding achievements that I could not find on any of the gaming websites that provide free walk-throughs.If you're having any trouble with the campaign or multi-player (or if you're going for that 1000 gamerscore), this guide is a worthy investment.Nice job by the author here.

CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder Review

CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've played each of the previous CSI games and this one was even better. There are none of the quirky little bugs that affected previous games, and the new 3D feature is fun and very interesting. There are times when you have to turn the evidence around using the 3D feature in order to get trace. This games seems to be more logical and therefore it's fun and challenging without being frustrating. There is even a "cheats" section if you really get stuck. All the TV characters seem to be doing the voicework for their game counterparts with the exception of Sara. The actress they got to do her part in this was very annoying - trying to imitate Sara's odd speech pattern.

The games are each a little longer, making the $30 price very reasonable for the entertainment value. This game is on one CD only, so you have to have it in to play.(Unlike previous games that took more to load.)However, the transitions from scene to scene are a little annoying because each time it takes you back to the title page while the CD loads the new scene.A minor thing, but think about this happening over and over throughout the game.

They've also improved things by offering only certain tools for each piece of evidence. While you still have to know what you are doing to use them, it makes it much less frustrating when you don't have to go through each tool before finding the correct one to use. They've also added a "mobile" lab which doesn't add much to the story.Still, I applaud them trying to improve with each round.

I feel this is a great value for the money.
