Konami Classics Arcade Hits Review

Konami Classics Arcade Hits
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a big fan of classic game collections and have purchased several. This collection from Konami is one of the better I've seen, both because of the selection of games and the quality of the emulations. These games, at least the ones I remember playing at the arcade, play just like the originals--to the extent that a handheld game can play like an arcade game in a cabinet, that is.The sound and graphics quality are as I remember them, and these are faithful renditions of these arcade classics.

The Games: the following games are included in this collection:

-Scramble
-Horror Maze
-Pooyan
-Time Pilot
-Roc'n Rope
-Track & Field
-Circus Charlie
-Basketball
-Road Fighter
-Yie Ar Kung-Fu
-Rainbow Bell
-Shao-Lin's Road
-Gradius
-Rush N' Attack
-Contra

I suspect many people are drawn to collections like these by one or two games they remember. For me the game was Contra, one of my favorite games ever.I have fond memories of Rush N' Attack and Gradius as well, and was glad to find faithful renditions of these games as well. All 3 of these games are excellently represented here, and have stood the test of time well (Rush N' Attack maybe less so than the others).

Most of the other games here are pretty good as well, and some (like Time Pilot) were surprisingly fun for someone like myself who is just discovering them for the first time.Despite a few duds (Basketball was pretty weak, for example), this collection is pretty strong and should provide some pleasant surprises for anyone buying the collection because of one or two specific games.

Cons: The screen size is the biggest limitation to this game.Even though the graphics were faithfully preserved in these ports the DS's small screen doesn't do them justice, though this is a limitation I can live with and obviously knew existed before I bought the game. Also, while I understand Konami's intent here was to port the ARCADE versions of these games, I can't help but wish I had the NES version of Contra (complete with Konami code) and the extra events from the Gameboy's version of Track and Field.Still, these are pretty minor qualms because, again, this is a collection of games exactly as they appeared in arcades.

Extras:There are some extras here. The game features a well done animated timeline of when all of these games came out, which I found very entertaining the first couple times. It starts when the game boots up but, thankfully, can be skipped if you're tired of it.The game also features a 'replay' option, allowing you to record your games and even trade them wirelessly with other gamers. There's also a jukebox type feature, which features many musical tracks from each of the games. Each game features instructions and a few tips, as well as a short introduction to the game.It also features a gallery section where you can see original leaflets from the game and also an image of the game's board. The game menus are a little strange and it takes some messing around with the menus to figure out where all this stuff is, but after a few minutes it becomes pretty straightforward.

Multiplayer:This game includes an option for both single card 2 player mode and multi card 2 player mode. Many of the games will allow you to play 2 players cooperatively with just one cartridge. It's great to see this feature included--I love being able to play 2 player Contra without having to track down another copy of the game.

Overall:This is a great collection.I'm thrilled to be able to play some of my old favorites again (and discover some great games I missed the first time around), and the fact that I can do so on my portable DS makes it that much better.20 years ago the ability to play all these games on a handheld system for what I sometimes dropped in a day at the arcade was beyond my wildest dreams, but now Konami has made it a reality. And, I must say, I'm quite pleased with the result.

Atari Arcade Hits #1 (Jewel Case) Review

Atari Arcade Hits #1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If, after you sink into these 6 classic Atari arcade games, you start to smell pizza or hear other voices, don't panic. It's just your mind bringing back memories of when you first played them. THAT'S how good these recreations are.
Compared to today's 3D arcade first-person shooters, these games might seem primitive but they can claim something that modern games can't: anyone and everyone played them. The controls were simple, usually consisting of a single knob or joystick and a couple buttons. You dropped in a quarter and you played.
When you went to the bowling alley or pizza parlor, you saw senior citizens standing shoulder to shoulder with teens at the PONG game. A father and daughter might be huddled in front of Tempest. A child barely tall enough to reach the trackball and buttons on Missile Command has already finished 12 levels. A grandmother has just been introduced to Asteroids and now, there's no tearing her away. A small crowd is gathering around the Super Breakout game because someone has just cleared a third wall of bricks on the first ball. And a weekend lawn warrior is exacting revenge on his leaf-munching adversaries in Centipede.
Those games live again, as does a feeling for what it was like to have lived back then, in Atari Arcade Hits. In addition to the exact recreations of 6 of Atari's landmark arcade games, the CD ROM includes a wealth of extra material including photos, promotional materials and over a half hour of Atari founder Nolan Bushnell reminiscing about the times. That segment was actually taped at the former Andy Capp's Saloon where the world was introduced to the first coin-operated PONG.
NOTE: Games requiring a knob or "paddle" controller are best played with a good quality trackball like the Logitech Marble Mouse Trackball, which I've reviewed elsewhere on Amazon.com

Atari: The 80 Classic Games Review

Atari: The 80 Classic Games
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Enough has been written about the games and their faithful recreations (all the way down to the infamous 2600 game Easter eggs planted in "Adventure" and "Missile Command" by disgruntled uncredited programmers) that adding anything else would be redundant. They really are spot on.

The real treasure is leafing (mousing?) through all that bonus material. First, there's box art and instruction manuals for all of the 2600 games as well as the manual for the Atari Video Computer System (the console itself) and a page from a mail order catalog offering the original package that included 3 Game Program cartridges (all yours for just $299.98).

The arcade nostalgia features marketing and promotional materials including flyers, collector pins, TV and radio commercial scripts, advertising slicks, covers from shop manuals and an ad for the CAT (Computer Assisted Troubleshooter) Box, used by former pinball repairmen to maintain this new breed of barroom entertainment.

For history buffs, a sizeable excerpt from the book "PHOENIX: The Fall and Rise of Videogames" by Leonard Herman encapsulates Atari's history, from a 2-man operation to market dominance and eventual collapse, only to rise again as the new name for the company formerly known as Infogrames.

As if that's not enough, there's the man himself: Atari founder Nolan Bushnell in over a half-hour of video reminiscing about the video game industry, taped at the former location of Andy Capp's Tavern where the world's first PONG game began gobbling every quarter in the San Francisco Bay area.

So, calling this CD-ROM a "collection" is like calling a Ferrari Testarossa a nice little Italian car. It's much more. It's a treasure chest, and your CD-ROM drive is the key.

Atari Anniversary Edition Review

Atari Anniversary Edition

Now you can relive those carefree days when you had a pocketful of quarters! This doesn't come with 6, but 12, 12(!) classic arcade games!See what happened in the years these games came out in the instruction booklets included in this package: Mount St. Helens eruption (uh-oh), popularity of polyester suits, the death of Elvis, Governer George Wallace assassinated and paralyzed, Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" becomes a hit on the charts, MASH, Don McLean's "American Pie", A mass wedding for 2075 couples at the Unification Church's Sun Myung Moon, the opening of EPCOT in WDW, and a ton more!
One CD holds 6 popular classics: Centipede (Shoot up those bugs and spiders before they get you.Don't get yourself ambushed!), Missile Command (Hurry up and stop these missles from destroying the major cities!), Pong (You've got head-to-head tennis.Don't take your eye off the ball!), Super Breakout (Can you really wipe out all the bricks without losing more than 3 baseballs??),Asteroids (That's a cool game, but why isn't it in color?), and finally Tempest (Oh gawsh, that game is hard!).You need more? There's a second CD waiting for you which contains other classics, though more forgotten: Millipede, Crystal Castles, Warlords (Now THAT'S a duel!), Battlezone (Hope Saddam Hussein doesn't catch you playing that game!Reminds me of the war in the Gulf 10 years ago.), Gravitar (You'll need a special joystick for that game.Otherwise, it is nearly impossible to play, Asteroids Deluxe (Want more asteroid action?Take that!), and uhhhh, that's about it for the games.
Oh, and there are very unique and special features: video interviews, wallpaper, photos of old atari cartridges and artwork, and graphic enhancement (Just click on the arrow next to the game of your choice.)You can also customize the settings of the game: increase or decrease your number of lives, choose the game languages in English, French, Spanish, or German.Or else, if you feel like it, would you enable test mode?
Another feature is that you get just about EVERY sound effect in 44 KHZ MONO wave files.Neat, huh?You can even use them as standard computer and internet sound files! If you're tired of those standard computer sound files (like AOL for example), you can pick one of these video game sound effects of your choice.Cool!
Will Hasbro make anymore emulation from arcade games?Let's find out as time goes by.
ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED FOR EVERY COMPUTER, ESPECIALLY LAPTOPS!
