Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Review

As promised I'd post an actual review of the game after beating it to a pulp.
Needless to say that this is an amazing game with a gripping story, and defintely a worthy sequal. To say that it has perfect top notch graphics and music that will blow you away. Not to mention its great character development and plot twists.
I won't give away any of the story where as to me (and a lot of other people) this game has some of the best Plot twist in history. All I will say is that the game is divided into two parts. The "Tanker" chapter and the "Plant" chapter. They both link in everyway and you can see if you play through the game.
The characters are a true treat in this game. There are several new characters introduced and they all have their own reasons for being where they are. However the main villian...compared to Liquid Snake isn't the best.Next to Kefka (FFVI) Liquid was probably the best villian of all time.In comparison, the main villian didn't live up to Liquid.
The music is breathtaking done by Harry Gregson-Williams (The Rock and Enemy of the State if you don't know him). The music will really catch you, and that intro music is just awesome!
I'm not much for graphics but I will say that the graphics are so good that when watching the cinema scenes they look like real people! Can't go wrong with that. Also, the voice acting is sheer brilliance. They actually show emotion and they have a change in tone when they're upset or sad.
It'll take you about 10-15 hours to complete the game your first time through but it is worth it.However, movie cinemas make up at least six hours of the game. This may bother some people as they said the first one was short. Sorry to say that the game is NOT short. But that means you actually HAVE TO WATCH THE CGs!!!!Also, watching the CGs is the only way to understand anything thats going on.
The game doesn't really present any BIG challenge. In fact with the new gear and stuff you can do I'd say it makes the game EASIER than the first (is that possible!?).To say the least though the new gear isn't much different from the old gear in MGS.
Lastly the fun factor. The game is very fun if you don't take it too seriously. What I mean by that is don't be ashsmaed to break some of the stealth rules and have fun with the guards every once and awhile. That was the funnest part of the first one.
One final note.In the HARD and EXTREME difficulty setting you can choose to have a game over if you're spotted.Being that you take so much damage I'd probaly suggest that you take that oppertunity on EXTREME.
OVERALL
Graphics: 10

Plot/Story: 10
Music: 10
Gameplay: 9
Fun Factor: 10
Overall score: 9.9

Product Description:
One of the most anticipated titles in PlayStation2 history absolutelylives up to the hype. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is thefollow-up to one of the most captivating and intelligent adventures on the originalPlayStation. Solid Snake, everyone's favorite mullet-sporting supersoldier, isback, along with many other familiar faces and voices. While its predecessor waslauded for telling a complex story, this sequel has even more fascinating twistsand turns. Also, likeMetal Gear Solid,MGS2 takes console-game storytelling to an entirely new level withstunning in-game movies, great graphics, and game mechanics that let you findyour own solutions to challenges. The game's twisting and at times bizarre plotwill undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed.
Konami has replaced the moronic enemies from the first MGS with morecerebral and capable foes; this causes an even greater emphasis on stealth thanthe original. The controls have been refined and Snake's repertoire of moves hasgrown, significantly deepening the gameplay. This is, technically andstylistically, one of the best-looking PS2 games on the market. The sound isalso topnotch, with a fabulous score and outstanding voice acting. What makesthis game such a standout, however, is how all of these sight, sound, and storyelements combine to immerse the player into an entertainment form somewherebetween movie and game. It will be years before Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons ofLiberty is surpassed. This is interactive entertainment at its finest.--Raymond M. Padilla
Pros:

One of the best and most complex stories in gaming
Outstanding graphics with many interactive elements
    Excellent soundtrack and voice acting

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance Review

Metal Gear Solid 2 is a great game. Although not everyone liked the plot, the stealth gameplay is still the most fun on the market. The game was released over a year ago on PS2, but last winter, this souped-up game came to Xbox. Now it is back on PS2, and finally PC.
The main game, Sons of Liberty, is a great game. People have critized the plot, but I found it enjoyable. The variety of gameplay is great, though. You go undercover as a terrorist, defuse bombs, destroy security cameras, take pictures of Metal Gear Ray (a powerful nuclear weapon), and fight hard bosses. All of Snake's stealth tactics are present, even the new first-person view. In case you haven't heard, there is a new character (Raiden). However, he can perform all the same moves that Solid Snake could. The main game really emphasizes stealth, but if yuo are caught, it is not game over. Instead, you have a hard firefight ahead of you. It is fairly long, about 15 hours.
What is good about this game is all the extra content. There are over 300 VR missions. They are similar to the main game, but take place in a computer-generated combat zone. They have a good variety, and are fairly challenging. There are also over 150 alternative missions. The difference is that these take place in locations from the game (Big Shell or Tanker). Once again, these are challenging, varied, and cool. There are also 5 new Snake Tales. These include Solid Snake, and take place in levels from the game. However, all theese extra modes are difficult. There is no difficulty select for them.
Overall, this is a great game. If you do not own it, buy it. If you own another version of Metal Gear solid 2: Substance (PS2 of Xbox), this is not worth buying again. If you own the original on PS2, you should buy this for the extra content. As for which system? Depends on if you like a controller over a keyboard and mouse.

Metal Gear Solid is probably the best game I've ever played. It's not just another action game, its got some really innovative stuff in it.The biggest thing about this game is the fact that you have to be stealthy. This isn't just another game full of mindless gunfights; if you charge intoevery enemy you see, you won't make it far. Also, MGS has one of the bestvideo game stories ever, and it has great voice talents to back it up.Theboss fights are cool too because a lot of them require someneatstrategies. For those of you who are fans of first person shooters, don'tworry, there's still plenty of weapons and gadgets in MGS.The onlycomplaint I've ever heard about this game is that is's too short. That maybe true, but Resident Evil 2 is even shorter and it didn't get critisismover it.Besides, you'll have to play through multiple times to see bothendings and use the extras you get for beating the game.Basically, MGShas been setting the standard for games like Syphon Filter, and I think italways will.

Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection Review

As far as value goes, this is superb. These games are really worth so much more than other games on the market as far as production value and depth go. They are absolutely timeless. Content-wise, this is certainly five stars.

You may be interested to know about this set however...

The games are not individually shrink wrapped. In fact, the shrink wrap didn't even cover the whole box set and there's an opening on the side which the games "bindings" are. I could almost slip out the games without messing with the shrink wrap at all.

Also, the first game is on a ps1 disc and you need a ps1 memory card or ps3 to save like A. Pintor said. "Metal Gear Solid" is still on 2 discs so the set is 4 discs total.

All the discs are black with white font. So they match as a set but look different than the original released version discs.

Each game has a pretty meaty manual as well that match the front and back of their respective game case.

yup, if you're missing just one game in this series, its worth picking up the set.

Hideo Kojima has done it again. MGS4 is the most detailed, convincing, and well-researched game I have ever played. It offers a compelling and imaginative glimpse into the future of high-tech warfare, a nuanced, intelligent storyline, vastly improved gameplay, and incredible graphics.

The metal gear franchise has always pushed the boundaries of what a game could be, and challenged the preconceptions of the audience. MGS4 starts out with, of all things, a short live action film about marine fauna. The in-game store discounts weapons (in real time) on wednesdays and sundays. These are just a few examples, but there are many more. The story has both the philosophical and political musings as well as the bizarre humor and one of a kind characters that fans expect.

The gameplay is more open and the action is more intense than in prior games. The environments seem much bigger and are bustling with npcs engaged in building to building warfare. Snake can join either side in the conflict or ignore them and sneak by. He has a ton of new weapons and gadgets as well.
The graphics are among the most impressive I have seen in a game. The characters are solid physical presences with subtle, lifelike facial expressions. The mechs move with an animal grace and hunt with a keen intelligence that belies their artificial construction.

Overall, the game is an experience that should not be missed by anyone with a PS3. If you don't already own a PS3, this game alone would justify its purchase. It is by far the most creative, original, and technically polished game to appear on the system to date.

Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings.

Old timer Snake returns for what is slated as the final installment in the Metal Gear series. View larger.

New and old characters abound in MGS4. View larger.

PMCs have run amok and the world is at war. View larger.

Octacamo will help Snake blend into surroundings. View larger. Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone.
MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. The concept behind the latest Metal Gear Solid project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous MGS franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy tidbits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the MSX2 Metal Gear series, and three entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. Add to this Portable Ops, and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in Metal Gear Solid 4."
Kojima was very clear about the finality of MSG4, leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final installment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumored that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance.
In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camoflauge," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that MGS4 will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumor has it that MGS4 is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.
