King of Fighters 2002/2003 Review

King of Fighters 2002/2003
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been playing "The King of Fighters" series pretty regularly since its inception in 1994, and pound for pound, it is the best 2D fighting game series out there. The "Street Fighter" series may have pretty much started it all as far as fighting games go (and was pretty innovative at the time), but when you count depth, strategy, animation, and flat out fun factor, "Street Fighter" doesn't come close to KOF.The evolution of this series from 1994 until now has gained more fans worldwide every year, and innovation reaches its pinnacle with KOF 2002/2003 (mostly with 2003).
KOF was the first fighting game in history to use the 3-person team concept, and no other fighting game (except "Marvel vs. Capcom 2") has duplicated it since. In 1994, all of the fighters were grouped into teams, and they featured several familiar faces from many different SNK games.Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, and even Ikari Warriors was represented, and the fact that whole teams (with fighters having several different styles and moves) smacked down with one another offered unparalleled strategy. It evolved further in '95, with the option to put any 3 fighters in a team (as well as several new and original characters). The fight combinations were almost endless at this point.SNK also started experimenting with melding elements from their other fighting games into KOF, and it met with more success.
Well, 10 years later, here we are.KOF is nowhere near the same game as 1994, and fans of the series couldn't be more thankful. It's hard to improve upon near perfection, but the folks at SNK/Playmore have done it.The evolution is complete, with the most gorgeous, in-depth, and just plain fun version of them all. This is actually a collection of two games (on two different discs), as you may have guessed from the title, and there are lots of things to like about both of them.Once you've played them both for a little while, though, the differences between the two are clear. The 2003 version is clearly superior to 2002, as 2002 is basically a thrown-together remix/slugfest combining elements from past KOF games, while 2003 introduces new characters, new gameplay elements, and an all-new storyline (what's that?A storyline in a FIGHTING GAME?).
Both games have most of the same features: single-player, vs. play, survival mode (single or team); the usual fighting game features. But let's get to the important stuff: what will make you want to buy this collection?

2002:
THE GOOD:
--Lots of characters from which to choose (44 in all). All of the fighters in '02 are from the '96-'01 games, so veterans of the series will likely already be familiar with them.Even the end boss, Omega Rugal, is selectable from the get-go.There are 2 or 3 "secret" characters to unlock as well. This adds a great amount of strategy to an already challenging fighting game and makes for some interesting combinations.
--The graphics. As far as hand-drawn 2D games go, it doesn't get any better. The fighters, backgrounds, and special move effects are all gorgeous and have amazing detail.
THE BAD:
--Control.The control in 2002 is a bit less responsive than 2003, which can lead to a little frustration. In order to execute special moves, you've got to be pretty deliberate with the D-Pad.Super moves can sometimes be torture to pull off, which is very annoying in a heated match.Highly recommend having a controller with an 8-way pad.
--Sound/BGM.Considering every other home version of KOF uses an arranged soundtrack (with real musical instruments as opposed to MIDI files, making even listening to the game a joy), it's areal downer to hear such clunky background music in a PS2 game.I fail to see the reasoning behind that. The music is one of the best parts of the KOF series. Also, even in stereo, the sound effects seem to fade in and out from time to time.
--NO ONLINE PLAY!What the heck is THAT all about?Talk about a game that screams to be online capable, and it's not.Disappointing, really; I was looking forward to having my rear end handed to me by Japanese 10-year-olds.
THE UGLY:
--Difficulty.In single-player mode, you will not find a cheesier end boss than Omega Rugal `02.On any difficulty setting above 4 (normal), forget beating him unless you're a champion-caliber player. The AI in the matches leading up to the end is crazy as well.Unless you just plan on smacking down with your friends, which is where the real fun is, you'd better know what you're doing before you even turn on the game. There are no "endings" to speak of in the game anyway, so there's almost no point in playing it through in single-player.

2003:
THE GOOD:
--Gorgeous graphics. This is the most well-drawn of the series. You almost feel as if you're watching anime when the fighters go at it.The fluidity of the animation is awesome. In normal graphics mode, the special moves' effects are also enhanced, and the backgrounds are even more detailed and unique. It's a true work of art.
--Control.2003 is a sheer joy to play control-wise.Even though the execution of several of a fighter's moves is similar (a KOF curse from '94 on), the controller knows the difference and you rarely miss a move. The most responsive control of any home version of KOF.
--New storyline means multiple endings.2003 marks the dawning of a new era for the tournament, as this year the bad guys (from a place called "His Distant Land", whatever that means) behind the scenes are starting something even more evil than NESTS or the Orochi. Each team has what's called a "good" ending, revealed after beating the "true" end boss, Mukai (have fun figuring out how to get it; it's easier than you think), that reveals just a bit about the developing story, adding replay value. Some of them are pretty hilarious, especially if you're familiar with the series.
--Depth/Strategy.The "tag out" concept is very fresh for this series, and you can also pick a "leader" for your team, which enables that fighter to pull out an extra-devastating Super move. The team combinations alone make for great replay value for a fighting game. There are 35 different characters to master in all.
THE BAD:
--No online play.See 2002.
Forget THE UGLY.There's nothing ugly about it, unless you want to consider the lack of online play ugly.

For fighting game aficionados, there is no greater find than the KOF series. The depth, the longevity, and especially the intriguing characters make this series one of the most well-known and well-loved fighting game series in the world.SNK (now Playmore) saw something great in the Street Fighter series and basically said, "How can we make that better?".They did, and it's made for a great run.Sadly, 2003 marked the last time we'll see a 2D KOF game, probably ever. It's also very doubtful the next wave of 3D KOF games (if any more come down the pipe) will advance the potentially "chilling" storyline started in 2003.There's just not enough of a market for these types of games anymore, but there will always be old-school aficionados like me who've played `em for over 15 years now, and will continue to look out for them.If you share my passion, you'll not regret purchasing this game collection, despite the nuances. If you've never played a KOF game before, this would be the ultimate starting point.

King of Fighters XI Review

King of Fighters XI
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SNK's long running King of Fighters series makes a return to it's 2-D roots with King of Fighters XI, and be glad that it has.3 on 3 tag team fighting is the name of the game here, as KOF XI is nearly arcade perfect in it's conversion to the PS2, so don't let the budget price fool you when questioning the quality of the game. The fighting system is surprisingly deep and varied, and the large roster of fighters from other SNK titles like Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting is nicely selected as well. The graphics are fluidly animated for the most part despite some moments of choppiness, and controls are pretty tight for the most part as well, even though tagging in isn't always as easy as it sounds. There are also a nice selection of bonuses to unlock, including extra characters, character endings, and artwork as well, which up's the overall replayability, and as mentioned before, the budget price doesn't hurt one bit either. If you're not into old school 2-D fighting though, KOF XI won't win you over. All in all, if you're a fan of the King of Fighters series or old school 2-D fighting in general, King of Fighters XI is definitely worth picking up, and the fact that it won't hurt your wallet only makes the deal all the sweeter.

King of Fighters: Maximum Impact (Collector's Edition) Review

King of Fighters: Maximum Impact
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
King of Fighters: Maximum Impact is the first KOF 3-D game. Although this game has a good presentation, good graphics, awesome sound & visual effects, and awesome voiceovers, the controls just make this version of KOF unplayable.

Graphics 7/10 - Yes, I know I said that this game has good graphics, but, seriously, they could be better. However for SNK's 1st attempt in a 3-D KOF game, they did a good job.

Sound Effects/Voiceovers 10/10 - The sound effects and voiceovers in this game blew me away! Probably the best thing in the game!

Visual Effects 10/10 - Awesome visual effects! All the moves are done very well.

Gameplay 3/10 - Unfortunately, the very difficult-to-master controls makes this version of KOF unplayable. There are about 20-30 controls for each character, many of them hard to memorize and hard to perform quickly.

Bonus DVD 2/10 - The collector's edition includes a bonus behind-the-scenes DVD. BORING! All they talked about in this video is how they changed the game into 3-D. There is one chapter in this DVD that gives you a profile of each character. It's like reading the beginning text in a Star Wars movie....only much, much longer (over 20 minutes to be exact). Well...at least this DVD makes a good collector's item.

Overall: I recommend this game only if you are a fan of the King of Fighters series. If you're looking for a good fighting game, get Soul Calibur II for PS2.

3 out of 5 stars

King of Fighters 2006 Review

King of Fighters 2006
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The next addition to the king of fighters series.... is it a hit? Hell yeah it is. The original 3d hit: King of fighters Maximum Impact was a great addition to the King of Fighters series. SNK took one of the best 2d fighting series and puts it in to 3 dimensions with 3d character models and 3d backgrounds. The King of Fighters 2006 takes this engine, and gives it a work out. The fight system is extremely fast pasted, which is a little different from the 2d King of Fighters games, which have always been slow. The game makes a big emphasis on using combos and special moves. This game, unlike many other 3d fighters, is not a button masher. Meaning, I cannot just hit X over and over, and win the round. The AI is not the best I have played with, but playing it on hard was tough as nails. Sometimes I think the game knows what moves I am going to be dishing out. Even while playing on easy, I am not able to win fights using only projectiles. The AI has been upgraded significantly from MI.
A huge addition to this game is a Counter System. Hit L2 while standing to counter high attacks, or while crouched to counter low attacks. These will basically, block and stun the enemy unit for a split second allowing you just enough time to attack him. I did not find myself using it very much, since the game is so fast paced, it is extremely hard to counter and attack. Overall the battle system works great. You can fight using just combination attacks, special moves, or a mixture of both.
A total of 38 characters to choose, from most of which you have to unlock along with over 15 costumes per characters, make each fight different. The addition of Billy Kane and Kula brought back some of the best characters to tournament. Some of the unlockable characters are characters with a very identical move set. You can unlock Wild Wolf, who is Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves. They decided yet again not to add some of the most important characters from the KOF series: Andy Bogard and King.
Gameplay: Very few times I run into frame rate issues, other than that the game runs smooth as silk, and very easy control scheme.
Graphics: The backgrounds are some of the best backgrounds I have seen on ps2 fighting games. It seems the focus for the characters was the clothing and the hair. Their faces and bodies could have been worked on a little more, but the character movements are classic, and realistic.
Online: How much I would have wanted online play, there is no online play, but there are many verses modes.
Overall: This is one of the best additions to the series, and shows that SNK can make a fighting game that critics can compare to bigger titles such as Tekken and Virtua Fighter. King of Fighters Fans will love this game to death.
Rating: 9/10

King of Fighters 98: Ultimate Match Review

King of Fighters 98: Ultimate Match
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
1998: SNK releases King of Fighters 98: The Slugfest for the Neo*Geo. The 5th game in the series & has been a fan favorite since.

2008: SNK Playmore (successor company to SNK) releases King of Fighters 98: The Ultimate Match for the Taito Type X (arcade hardware). A PS2 version was released months later in Japan.

And now it's finally released in North America. So what's the different between this & the original game (which is in here as well)? They are:

9 new fighters that wasn't in the original game (the KoF 96 boss team, Kasumi, Eiji, Goenitz, Orochi, as well as Iori & Leona in their Riot of the Blood form), meaning that every fighter that appeared in 94 & throughout the Orochi Saga (95-97) are here. There are also new extra versions of King, Blue Mary, Geese, and Ryuji Yamazaki. King is based on her Art of Fighting 2 counterpart while the rest are hybrids of their appearances throughout the Real Bout Fatal Fury series. The returning fighters have been tweaked to give the game more balance with some given new moves.

In terms of game play, Extra & Advance Mode have also been mortified. The former's POW meter has been shorten (but it won't get any shorter when you lose a fighter unlike in the original game.) & it fills up quicker. There's also a new mode: Ultimate Mode which allows you to customize features from both Extra & Advance modes. Also unlike in the original game, any owned stock will be transferred to the next fighter. A big plus as you no longer have to worry about losing some & all your stock when you get K.O.ed.

Also, Omega Rugal's not the only final boss you can go up against. Depending on how well you play, you can also go up against Goenitz (& going up against the KoF 96 Boss Team prior) or Orochi (& fighting the Orochi Team prior).

The PS2 version has lots of choices for the solo gamer (it's still best to play with a friend) from Endless Survival, & Challenge Mode (with 30 different challenges). As previouslymentioned, the original King of Fighters 98's in here as well, which I think is based on the AES versionas there`s a vs. mode, survivor mode & you could even play as Omega Rugal too! Also there's no real loading & it lacks the audio miscues that exists in the PS2 Orochi Collection version.

I only have two issues with this game. One is the graphics. While the stages are very nice (& there's more of them here than in the original game & you can set them up in 2D or 3D), the sprites look like they haven't been mortified in years, if not over a decade. Nonetheless, this ain't Capcom Fighting Evolution! The other issue is the fact that there are no real endings. Even the intro to Omega Rugal & his ending scene when you beat him in the original game are omitted here.

Despite this, the Ultimate Match takes the original King of Fighters 98 game & makes it even better. In reality, it also makes the recently released King of Fighters Collection- The Orochi Saga somewhat obsolete as you'll getting the best elements of the first 4 games rolled up into this one. Plus, at $20, this is a steal. Add in unlockablies like hidden fighters, artwork, & game play video & you got a game that's a must for fans of the series, or 2-D fighters in general. With this out, & Samurai Shodown Anthologycoming out soon, how about bringing the recently released-in Japan, King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match to North America?

In addition to the game, you'll be getting a poster & a bonus CD. It's a data disc, so you'll need a PC to access it. It has wallpapers & a couple of trailers for this game & the upcoming King of Fighters XII.
