DSi Screen Protective Filter Review

DSi Screen Protective Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a Hori screen protector, branded under the Nintendo DSi name/packaging.Many consider Hori to be the best, I find it tied with Martin-Fields Overlay in the screen protector department category.

I bought a Nintendo branded third-party screen protector in their "clean and protect" kit, and it was AWFUL--very difficult to apply, and not as effective.Other third-party screen protectors have left a film/residue, that is why I say brand matters. My experience with the Hori/Nintendo co-branded product was smooth and easy and it's been quite effective on my DS Lite and DSi.

A good tip for the application process is to have a credit card or something similar handy, and press gently down and forward simultaneously as you peel it off, because if you don't "smooth it out" you will end up with air bubbles, or particles of dust which create visual imperfections.

The reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is, while this does provide excellent screen protection, the glare reduction advertised seems minimal.I use screen protectors on just about everything electronic and portable that I have (iPod, phone, DS, DSi, GBA, etc.) and I find the glare reduction noticeable, but relatively minor. The real reason, I think, to buy this is to avoid scratches and other blemishes, which this does fantastically.

I'm not sure if the "new" DSi screen is scratch-blemish resistant, but in my experience when it comes to portable electronic devices, just about everything will develop scratches and blemishes, under normal use, if not protected. The iPhone/iPod touch is the one exception I have found to this rule, other than that, I would say, if you want to keep it "like new" it's a relatively inexpensive investment.

Bella Sara Review

Bella Sara
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great horse game for the DS whether you're into the Bella Sara website or not. I grew up during the pokemon card craze so having a game where you collect cards was a nice throw back to my younger days. It took me just under a week to complete all the challenges and find all the cards. The cards represent beautiful artwork. There are three different trails with different challenges for each and then there are three different jump courses that you can ride multiple times to collect all the cards. You get 6 different magical horses to ride, the 6th being a winged horse you get after completing all the challenges. Who wouldn't want to play a horse game where you get to ride a winged horse?
However there are cons. The graphics are sub par. The cards look great, but the actual horses you ride look like they're poorly molded from clay. Not much detail was paid to how the game horses look. Also the horse tires too fast in my opinion. After it gets tired, you have to go through the grooming, feeding, cleaning the stall, and petting routine all over again. This gets tiring and repetitive, especially when you have six horses. A third complaint is that you get the flying horse too late in the game to do much with it. The challenges are all complete. I used the horse to go through the jump courses again and collect cards and I suppose this is what you're supposed to do, but I would like to see some challenges designated just for that horse as some of the other challenges are.
Overall it is a very fun game and worth the purchase if you're into horse games.

KORG DS-10 Plus Review

KORG DS-10 Plus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Almost as soon as I received my KORG DS-10 in the mail, I picked up a second copy and another DS Lite. Then I heard about the KORG DS-10 Plus and realized that I had been played for a chump since the new version would basically let me do the same thing as two copies, minus the awkwardness of holding two DS systems and wearing two sets of headphones when I was using them outside of my home studio.Naturally, I pre-ordered it as soon as I was able to, and I decided to hold out for the DSi XL to be released so that I could experience its full potential (it's still usable on a DS or DS Lite, you just can't use dual mode, which is pretty much the whole point of this updated version). Now that I've had time to compare the DS-10 Plus to two copies of the original DS-10, I feel like I'm ready to share my experience.

First of all, I'm assuming anyone reading this review knows what they're getting into. There aren't a whole lot of changes in this revision of the DS-10, so if you've already used that one you know what to expect. If not, I've read plenty of reviews that don't quite "get" the DS-10, finding it limited as a loop-based synthesizer lacking polyphonic sounds and a full sequencer. If you were hoping to find those kinds of features, you should probably consider just buying an actual factual piece of audio hardware or a soft synth for your computer. If you're anything like me, the so-called "limitations" of the DS-10 are what make it fun to make music on... with enough creativity and practice you can make a single synth or drum sound sound like several disparate sounds, and you can find clever ways to create transitions between the various patterns so it sounds like more than simple looping electronic music.I love the challenge of trying to get more sounds out of fewer options (even on my hardware synths).I also love that I can work on my music on my daily walk to/from my office... you'd be hard-pressed to find ANY other software or hardware synthesizer that allows you that much freedom.

That being said, what's new in the DS-10 Plus to distinguish it from owning two copies of its predecessor? The new dual mode allows you to load up a different song in each "deck", so that you now have 4 synths instead of 2, and 8 drum tracks instead of 4.You still need to remember to save each song separately if you make changes, but it's pretty easy to tell which deck is currently selected, and being able to use the R button to quickly switch between decks is incredibly convenient.Otherwise, not a lot has changed since the first DS-10 (it seems like they could have at least improved the presentation), but it turns out that the greatest strength of this new version, as well as its greatest weakness, lies in the revamped song mode.

In the original DS-10, song mode was basically worthless. You organize your patterns into a single composition and then listen to them play. You can't change things on the fly, and you can't program anything other than the order of patterns in, so you'd might as well just stick to pattern mode and do it yourself. In the DS-10 Plus, not only are you given the option to program in mutes for every sound (which at first felt like cheating to me after spending so many months practicing my songs and muting sounds manually as I switch patterns), but you're free to move around to any of the normal editing screens and change up your sounds, play along on the keyboard, alter the master effect, and mess with the mixer, all while having the song continue playing the patterns in the order you specified. This gives you a ridiculous amount of freedom in your compositions.Previously, switching back and forth between two or more patterns while simultaneously trying to fade out a single instrument was a nightmare that required fast reflexes and coordination. Now you can focus on just the one instrument fading out while song mode does the rest for you in the background.Being able to mute or unmute several tracks simultaneously is also a huge advantage over the DS-10.

So how about that greatest weakness that I mentioned?Well, for one, you can only make a song last at most 200 measures (using dual mode). But more disappointing that than is that you can't have different patterns playing on each deck.I have a song that I started on my dual DS Lite setup where on one system I continuously go back and forth between two patterns, while on the other system, the main melody of the song is carried through a progression of patterns.Think of it like this:

system 1: [A1] > [A2] > [A3] > [A4]
system 2: [B1] > [B2] > [B1] > [B2]

I was so excited to hear about dual mode on the DS-10 Plus, thinking that it would save me a LOT of work of having to carry around two DSes to achieve this.Unfortunately, it's not the case. When you select a pattern on one deck, you're limited to hearing the corresponding pattern on the other deck.So you're stuck with this:

deck 1: [A1] > [A2] > [A3] > [A4]
deck 2: [B1] > [B2] > [B3] > [B4]

Since I own more DSes than any one person really needs, I can work on two songs simultaneously in dual mode on my DS-10 Plus, and then copy one of the songs to a DS-10 so that I can perform the song using two DS systems. It's not much different than the old method I had worked out, but it is definitely nice to hear both songs playing on a single DS so I can really make sure everything sounds good together.

That disappointment is by no means enough to detract from the improvements. If you already own a DS-10 and were thinking of picking up a second copy, then there's no reason not to upgrade.Even if you don't own a DSi, the vastly improved song mode is a huge step above its predecessor (of course, if you do own a DSi, it's even more useful). If you want a KORG DS-10 but haven't tried out the original, then there's also no reason to not get the DS-10 Plus. Finally, if you don't think a loop-based monophonic synthesizer is for you then good luck finding a more powerful yet equally portable synthesizer for such a low price.I'm sure KORG could have taken the time to put some more useful features in this update, but still, for what the KORG DS-10 Plus is, it's an amazing and powerful piece of audio software that is well worth the money.

WarioWare D.I.Y. Review

WarioWare D.I.Y.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WarioWare DIY may come with 90 or so pre-loaded microgames that many of us are familiar with. But the point of these 90 or so games isn't to play with (though, you can do that).

Really, as many Internet review sites have already said, this is a modern day "Mario Paint". You can create mini games, comic books (four panels each) and even full 90 second MIDI-like songs with 4 separate tracks and a percussion track. The amount of detail you get into your creations is all up to you.You decide how much involvement you want to put into it.Create something from the ground up?Go for it!But plan on spending upwards of 3+ hours to create a really good game... all for about 8 seconds of pay off.

Or maybe you just want to steal bits and pieces of other games to make your own?Or just edit some in-game artwork to give things a touch of your own personality? You can do that, too.And it takes much less time.

The problem is, even if you take shortcuts, this game is not a "pick up and play" type experience that Nintendo has recently become so famous for.You can save up to two projects of each type (game, comic, song) so you can be working on simultaneous projects and can always save and quit whenever you want. This is good. But even so, making these little baby steps may become tedious to you, as you may end up feeling like you're not getting anywhere.

Beyond the creation, there's also challenges."Jobs" involve you creating different elements of games "on spec" for Wario. This is silly, because, even though the game presents you with a preferred outcome of your design, you could really just draw anything, like a bunch of scribbles, and the game won't know the difference. But if you look beyond that and really get creative, you end up creating some interesting aspects to already-mostly-completed mini games.

Other "challenges" called "dojos" are more "game code" focused. They encourage you to learn more about how mini game programming works by presenting you with expected outcomes in a game that you have to program yourself.Luckily, in this area, the game knows if you did it right or not, and it *can* help you learn about the game programming very quickly. It also bends your brain a little, which is fun.

Overall, if you've got creativity itching in you to get out, and plan to *fully utilize* the social aspects of this game, like the wi-fi connection, including product swapping amongst "friends" and weekly submissions to contests... or even swapping products to your Wii, if you have one, and send it on to other friends with Wii's that have the showcase software, but not necessarily a DS or WarioWare DIY, which is convenient - then BUY this now.

But if tedious creation, patience and hours of staring at creation screens sounds like it would bore you, then stay away. The 90 games that come pre-installed are NOT worth the almost $35 price tag.If you want MicroGames, just pure MicroGames, buy WarioWare Touched on eBay for about $10.

Using a local wireless connection, friends can swap micro-games, comics and music they have created.
After the game launches, Nintendo will regularly make new micro-games available for download to players who have access to a broadband Internet connection.
From time to time, Nintendo will challenge WarioWare: D.I.Y. players to create games based on a specific theme. Nintendo will make the best submissions available for download to players with a wireless broadband Internet connection.
Players can upload items to their Storage Crate in the Warehouse (wireless broadband Internet access required). These products can then be downloaded by any of the friends with whom they have exchanged friend codes.

If you want to take a break from creating and playing games, why not try your hand at a comic strip? WarioWare: D.I.Y. includes all the tools artists need to compose their own four-panel comic strips.
Integration with the Wii gives players access to additional games, allows for importing of created WarioWare D.I.Y. games into the Wii environment and contains an unlockable multiplayer mode.

Rhythm Heaven Review

Rhythm Heaven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As soon as I got this, I realized the potential of having music students enhance their rhythm skills through this game, even before they formally learn particular counting patterns in their music studies. Only, this is a uniquely FUN way of learning!I am literally demonstrating it to the families I teach to present it as something to purchase as an asset to their lessons.Of course the kids love me for that!Who'd a thought they would get a DS game because of their piano teacher?!

If you are a music student or the parent of one that struggles with keeping time or using a metronome, this game will install a solid, internal beat inside every gamer, whether they realize it is happening or not.I have passed many mini-games with my eyes closed while purely tuning into the music and the sound cues that are provided as you progress. The key to winning is in the beat! You cannot be successful at this game without "hearing" the songs assigned to each mini-game or without engaging with the music's rhythm.

The other thing I find myself doing with the taps and flicks is that I am actually "playing" the game as if it were an instrument. The games themselves become part of the music!Every interaction with the game becomes motion creating sound that completes the songs that the games are set to.It is like being a participant in a band, choir, or orchestra. But, because of the literal game you are playing, it is a unique experience.

It can be hilarious as you interact with the characters through the mistakes you make or the successes that allow you to pass each level.I have found myself full-out laughing at some of the antics or creative surprises that are thrown at you along the way.

I own about 50 DS games and this game is definitely in my top five.I recommend it to anyone that loves a challenge, fun, and music. Here's to Rhythm Heaven 2!

New USB Power Charge Cable Adapter for Nintendo NDSi Review

New USB Power Charge Cable Adapter for Nintendo NDSi
Average Reviews:

I bought this product in anticipation of a three-week stint in Italy during which I would not have access to an American AC plug. I am bringing my MacBook Pro and already have the Apple M8794G/B World Travel Adapter Kit to keep my notebook charged overseas. However, having very recently purchased a DSi (read: this product arrived before the DSi did) I wanted an inexpensive way to charge my DSi while I was away from home. Enter the USB Power Charge Cable Adapter, which seemed like a natural solution, and something that would suffice - but the product is so good that I felt the need to write a review. There are a couple things that make it excellent:
a) The price. It's right. Paying less than $6 shipped (in my case it arrived in 2 days with regular shipping from HDE) is spot on for a useful cable like this.
b) The make. This cable has a finish which feels remarkably similar to that of the DSi, and the coloring is a match for the matte black DSi. I am also happy to say that the product quickly and easily charges the DSi without any hassle.

Pokemon Platinum Review

Pokemon Platinum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I must address the numerous reviewers who are complaining that Platinum is essentially a remake of Diamond and Pearl versions of Pokemon.

Yes, it is. And everybody should have known that before blowing $40 on it, simply by reading the product description. The third installations of all 4 Pokemon series of games have always been remakes of the previous 2. Yellow was an enhanced version of Red and Blue; Crystal was an enhanced version of Gold and Silver; Emerald was an enhanced version of Ruby and Sapphire; and now, Platinum is an enhanced version of Diamond and Pearl.

This is how the Pokemon games have always worked, so it is beyond me why so many people are now complaining about it. Pokemon games typically get 4 1/2 star ratings on Amazon, and Platinum is now poised to have the worst rating out of any Pokemon RPG game, when in reality, it is the best.

Now that that's out of the way...

I partially gave Platinum a 5 star review to counteract some of these 2 and 3-star reviews we're seeing, but I truly think it is a great game. If you have a DS, Platinum will give you as much fun as any other DS game you have. Very casual Pokemon fans who already own Diamond and/or Pearl might not feel the need to buy this game. More serious Pokemon fans, and newcomers to the series, on the other hand, will love this game. I have played through all 13 previous Pokemon RPG games, as well as the Gamecube games, several times each, and Platinum still captivated me enough to get me playing for 5 straight hours without a break! (Not exactly the healthiest thing to do on a regular basis, but parents, think about the possibilities of getting your kids to sit quietly for a few moments...)

As mentioned above, Platinum is essentially a remake of Diamond and Pearl, but with enhancements. The storyline is tweaked a bit to keep things interesting, and there is a new legendary Pokemon for you to capture. Some places have been redesigned, and there are new characters. A very welcome addition is a new Battle Frontier, back from Emerald version. The Battle Frontier will keep you playing hours after you complete the main quest.

Besides all the new changes, the raw appeal of catching Pokemon, training them, and battling with them is ever present in Platinum version, and really, isn't that the reason these games are so loved, anyway? Ultimately I give Platinum version a heartfelt recommendation because it is fun, will provide hours and hours of gameplay, and is accessible, yet challenging. Platinum is the best Pokemon game. Newcomers, start here. Oldtimers...you know what to do.
