The Godfather The Don's Edition Review

The Godfather The Don's Edition

Before I start the review, I would like to strongly emphasize that I ONLY gave this game 3 stars because it is an exact replica of the PS2 game, which I enjoyed immensly and finished back when it was first released for the PS2. I would give the original game 4.5 stars easy. But because I enjoyed it so much, left the PS2 game in a different country, and paid half the retail price for this one, I am not furious, but disappointed indeed. And this is why I gave it 3 stars.
The developers, needless to say as prominent as EA games, invested almost no time or effort into upgrading the game. Graphics wise, it is almost identical. I expected some sort of improvement to suit the PS3, both for the cut scenes, which are alot, and for the gaming experience itself. In that respect, I felt I was playing the same exact PS2 game. The storyline is identical, borrowing the plot from the first movie while the protagonist (the main player we customize and play with) is the guy who does the jobs required for the Corleone family, until he reaches Don status and owns NY (then you're on your own, no movie plot anymore). I did not expect a change in plot, but I did expect additives GTA-style extra missions and diversions from the main tale. This, in a way, did not change. The weapons, cars, execution styles, scenery, landscape, were not altered at all (except for rain, which ok, adds some element). And like I said, remain on almost the same graphical level from the PS2 version of the game. Also, the loading time for scenes and such remain unnecessary high. Comes to show you that the game was not entirely modified for the PS3, to at least attempt to harness its powers. I have played other games that are more graphically-intensive that rendered alot faster loading speeds.
There were however, a few twists added. Firstly, the missions are more diverted. Now, besides having the hit missions (where you whack someone for a price), you have favor missions as well, where you go do favors for family members. Not impressed really, because most missions, more or less, follow the same patterns, but ok, a nice addition. There are also playing style changes. This is really the one change in the game I liked. The one I enjoy the most is the crew hiring option, where you can hire members of the family (below or equal you in rank that is) to tag along wherever you go (not in the main plot though of course) to assist you in extorting and fighting other family members and the cops. There is also another option, where you can call onto 4 members at the same time to do the same thing. When fighting warehouses and such (alot of other family members in one place), it gets pretty intense. That is an excellent idea. However, other than that, most other additions, supposedly adding flavor to the game are not THAT great. For instance, instead of just flirting with hookers in brothels, some of them can give you tips (gossips as they call it), that you then act upon and use for your advantage. For example, a police chief could be photographed with hookers, she comes and tells you where you can locate the photographer, you go buy his photos, and blackmail the chief. Nice, but definitely not a reason to play the whole game again (another reviewer focuses on the new additions, so no sense of repeating them again, you get the point).
If you have already played the first version of the Godfather, honestly, you don't need to buy this, unless you think it's one of the best games you have ever played. But if you never have, and love GTA-style games, this should be an instant buy for you. Yes it does get repetitive; you're really doing the same exact thing over and over again, with minor to no difference. But what game isn't, especially in this genre?
Hope this helps.

Overlord: Raising Hell Review

Overlord: Raising Hell
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really enjoyed this game. Overlord is one of the few titles on PS3 that will allow you to play a strategy-type game (but also retains some optional first-person smiting of your own). You're leading a pack of minions of several types, and have to use them strategically to win your battles.

Even though at a first glance the Overlord you're controlling is an evil creature, the gameplay allows you to proceed through the game doing mostly noble and helpful deeds, while listening to lots of humorous feedback. Throughout the game, it retains an enjoyable light-hearted atmosphere, without the usual "save-the-mankind-from-doom-and-gloom" setting.

Animation and graphics look a bit dated, but this doesn't get in the way of fun. Definitely, a recommended purchase if you're looking for a new type of PS3 entertaining. If you want to try it out, just download a free demo from the PSN store, I think it gives an accurate impression of the whole experience.

Product Description:
THINK EVIL, BREED EVIL, and CONTROL ALL - Overlord: Raising Hell, the groundbreaking Action RPG set in a seriously warped fantasy world, has now arrived to PlayStation 3. With plenty of black humour and dark irony, this game immerses the player in twisted parodies of classic fantasy scenarios and characters. Your word is law as you become the all powerful Overlord, a mysterious figure that has inherited the legacy of the evil after being raised from the dead. The game-s key innovation is the introduction of an array of impish creatures - the Minions. Accompanied by a horde of these slavishly loyal rascals, the Overlord plays dirty tricks on anything that moves to become even more powerful. The gremlin-like critters will follow your every instruction no matter how despotic or, for the Minions, life threatening it is. The PlayStation 3 version of this game allows you to explore and conquer 5 extra supernatural realms. Defend the Overlord's tower against waves of enemy attack with seven additional online multiplayer maps, including the competitive 'Capture the Maiden' map and 'Protect Your Power'. The Challenge Pack also introduces a 'Legendary' mode, which challenges you by using your most aggressive minion managing skills to complete the single-player game under exceptional circumstances. The PlayStation 3 edition includes 7.1 Surround Sound, screen hints, tactics and tips and an onscreen mini-map making it easier to navigate around the world of the Overlord.Be evil... or really evil with Overlord - it's time to raise hell.

MLB 08: The Show Review

MLB 08: The Show

I was a huge fan of MLB The Show 07, and didn't think Sony could really improve upon itself.Boy was I wrong! Here are just some of the improvements made.....

1.Improved graphics - not as much of a cartoony look.Amazing looking fields, background animation (people playing with beach balls in the stands, just as examples) And this time people actually go for foul balls hit into the stands.

2.Improved stats - This game track EVERYTHING, including how your player fares at the plate with various pitches, locations, pitchers, etc.It also has a better "training" mode in my opinion.Similiar to last year's, but a little more specific.

3.You can import your own soundtrack to play in the game. And the manual makes it very easy to do so.

The only thing that I found that was a negative so far is when you are fielding. If the batter takes a ball or strike, many times the at-bat starts over, with a 0-0 count.

They did say that you can play an entire game, and even save the game before a full game is completed. However, this DOES NOT APPLY to the "Road to the Show" mode.

If you want a baseball game that is realistic in just about every aspect, you need to buy this game.I played 07 until today, when I bought 08.And I am certain I will be playing this one until 09 comes out.

Virtua Tennis 3 Review

Virtua Tennis 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the most polished Virtua Tennis in the series.

I played the older versions in PS2 and PSP. Game play wise, VT3 actually is the same as those older versions. You get the latest and greatest tennis stars and new mini games to power up your custom player. The interesting thing is in VT3 the computer AI is quite smart. You cant cruise through the game like before. Have to use some brain. Thats the nice part.

Other than part, its pretty much the same game as the previous versions with better graphics (1080p!)

If you never play Virtua Tennis before, then I highly recommend this game to you. Its easy to learn and play. Its fun and addictive.

Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds Review

Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After playing all the Hot Shot Golf games on the Playstation 2 and being very pleased with all of them, I am again impressed with the new Out of Bounds version for the Playstation 3.Beginning with a look at graphics, I don't know if I would label them true 'next generation' in appearance but they are very nice to look at.Whether it is reflections off of water or vegetation or clothes on the players and caddies, it is well done in my opinion. As far as seamless game play, you're going to get that here. There is no lag or stutter in any animations and the load times are virtually non-existent in almost every case.Movement from hole to hole is quick and a round of golf can be too.I can play a round of 9 holes in about 12 to 15 minutes (I'm still on the 9 hole challenges at this point in the game).

When it comes to the controls used in playing the game, they are easy to learn and not hard to master, with one exception. This new version introduces a new type of advanced shot method where you watch the backswing of your player and look for flashing lights at certain points to gauge how hard to swing.Upon making your downswing, a circular meter below the golfer has a ring around it that collapses toward a ball icon and when the circle shrinks to encompass the ball, you hit the X button on the controller at just the right time to get a perfect hit.It sounds complicated but it isn't really. It is all a matter of timing and a little patience required.I personally still use the traditional shot method as seen in previous Hot Shot games which is the power bar at the bottom which gives you more precision in setting power and showing just where to hit a solid impact on the ball.I've found the advanced shot type a bit awkward personally and even though the manual says that the new method offers better range and impact zone, I haven't noticed any significant differences between the two shot methods and this is after playing many rounds with many different types of clubs using both shot types.

So far I've only played on two courses in the challenge mode (you open up new courses after beating a computer opponent in each challenge session) and what I've seen so far is good stuff. There is options to play regular games (stroke, match play, etc.) aside from the challenges and you can do practice rounds also where you can set course conditions to help you make shots in certain types of situations. There are 5 main characters that you can choose to start out with and each one has their own individual strengths, animations, and funny ways of talking. There is also several different caddies that add a good dose of humor now and again during the rounds.

I haven't played online yet and I don't know If I will do that but the instruction manual is very detailed on how to do this and the manual is excellent regarding all other facets of the game also.Something to look forward to, according to the game makers, is the fact that later on you can go online to download new content for the game including new courses, new gear, and other goodies. If you're a past fan of Hot Shots Golf, I would definitely recommend picking up Out of Bounds because it's a greatgame in my opinion and should bring many hours of fun to those that like golf.

MotorStorm Pacific Rift Review

MotorStorm Pacific Rift
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you tend to buy the first MotorStorm to get yourself familiar with the game than drop this idea.As good as the original MotorStorm is, it's no comparison to its sequel.MotorStorm: Pacific Rift is a great racing game, but more than just a racing game. The game was improved with even more alternative routes when racing. The graphic is excellent, and the interactions with objects such as smashing into a branch are more accurate.MotorStorm: Pacific Rift is also more realistic such as water cooling off your boost, and smaller vehicles not able to go to certain routes such as deep water.

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift has about 80 races, or more. All categorized into four distinct parts of the island: Earth Zone (basic land fields), Air Zone (expect lots of jump lifts), Fire Zone (lava lands), and Water Zone (beach etc). You will find about twenty-four races in each of the four zones. Some are basic races, some timed races, and some eliminator races where racers are being eliminated while racing (you don't want to be in the back).

You will also obtain points, and gain PS3 trophies for your performances in the game.Unlike its predecessor you are able to play in split screen with your peers if you have additional controllers. One of the many extras in MotorStorm: Pacific Rift is your ability to take pictures of your race (pause, and snap). The good thing about this feature is that you'll be able to snap a picture on any angle since you'll be able to move, zoom in and out, before snapping your pictures that will all be saved in your gallery.MotorStorm: Pacific Rift also has an improved online gaming where you can text/voice/video chat, and invite your PS3 friends who also own the game.

Cons: unfortunately absent in both the first, and Pacific Rift, there are no replays of your race.Hopefully this will be present if they make a third, but this shouldn't be a reason not to buy this game.
