Mortal Kombat 4 Review

Mortal Kombat 4

The combo system is intact, the frame rate is intact, but something had to give. (For those who don't know, sorry folks that you are, MK4 was originally an arcade game using truly awesome proprietary 3D hardware.)
In this case, it was the polygon count. Close up, some ofthese characters are just UGLY. The characters' polygons often clip andsometimes just disappear; fortunately, this only affects the look, not thefeel, of the game.
The standard "home version" additions arehere -- endurance mode (harkening back to MK1), practice modes with movelists, and Reiko finally has a "real" ending to his storyline. But most people are simply worried about the game's playability and arcadeaccuracy.
On those fronts, atleast, it wins big.
It may be ugly, butit's a lot of fun.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Review

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First thing I want to touch on is Collectors Edition vs. Regular Edition. Last time I tried to put actual price tag numbers in an Amazon review it was censored, so I'll just say take a look, you know Collectors Edition costs quite a bit more than the regular. Is it worth it?

Only if you're a hard-core collector. You get a very beautiful lithograph. Stunning artwork. I may even have to frame it. The comic is nice. Not great, just, nice. It's not so much of a self contained story as much as it's a kind of mural that serves to get you into the story. It's really short, probably not worth a second read. Same with the DVD. It has some really interesting vids about the making of the game and some interviews. It's surprisingly lengthy, but winds up amounting to extras you get on any DVD that you watch once and never again. So that's a rundown of the Collectors Edition extra's. Decide for yourself if you think that's worth it. I like the litho. Everything else I watched/read once and that's it. And the litho, beautiful as it is, probably wasn't worth the extra $$$. Now for the actual game.

Violence:
This seems to be the big sticking point for most MK fans. Most of the people who have something bad to say about this game, it boils down to "they toned down the blood and gore. It's the end of the world!" Well, there is still blood in here and there are still fatalities. Are they toned down from previous MK games? Most definitely! Probably only the first MK game on the SNES would be less bloody. Midway had to tone it down to a Teen rating in order for DC to get on board with the game. But like I said, there is still blood and Fatalities. They really do push the Teen rating to its limit. So parents may still want to be aware. But gamers, unless you're a total gore-hog who has to have the bloodiest, goriest games, this is still plenty brutal.

Controls:
First let me list my credentials on this. I played Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon on the Nintendo systems, all with the Gamecube controller. This is the first Mortal Kombat I've played on a PS3 system. So when I compare, it may or may not be an apples/oranges type thing. One thing I can definitely say is that the mutiple styles per character that was so prominent in the last three games is gone here. Everyone has the same basic move set (aside from special moves). This really does go back to the days before the 3-d games where, no matter what character you played, down and high punch equaled an uppercut, back and low kick equaled a leg sweep.

The past three games got so far away from that basic set up that you never knew what you'd get when ever you tried a new character. Would you get a high punch? Nope. Some kind of kick? Depends on what direction you're holding. It really was that haphazard.

Here they've stream lined it. MK vs. DC is very much taken back to the days of HP, LP, HK, LK. This should make it much easier for casual gamers who are either just getting into MK, haven't played MK in a long while, or are just here for the DC side of things.

Will I like it?:
I personally loved it. The controls are streamlined and easy. Even toned down for a Teen rating, there's no denying the MK roots. Online is very solid. Having wireless instead of wired connection tended to make me lag with other games. Here it's very smooth. If you like fighting games, get this. If you like Mortal Kombat (and aren't going to bemoan the fact that this is slightly toned down in the violence category), get this. If you like DC, get this. Five stars.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance Review

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Long have I waited for a great Mortal Kombat game to hit once again. And finally the wait paid off.Not since Mortal Kombat 2 has Mortal Kombat been as much fun.But i'm sorry to say that all is not as good as it seems...I give the game 3 1/2 stars really.
First off, the fighting system is completely revamped. Finally stepping into the realm of true 3d (Mortal Kombat 4 was nothing more than a 2d fighting game with 3d models), the game play is as fast and furious as ever. With the ability to switch between 3 different fighting styles, one of which is weapon based, the combo possibilities are increased more than ever.Full 3d movement and detail make this probably the best MK since MK2...
But then there are the problems. The fighting styles, while a great new addition, aren't all they're cracked up to be.The amount of combos you can do are limited, and the stance change button does not always work when you want it to(namely in the middle of a combo when it is most useful). As with most MK games, the AI is extraordinarily cheap at times...it always seems to know exactly what you're going to do, and beats the crud out of you before you can even pull a move off.
The juggling system is awful. The AI abuses it so much that you'll find yourself walking away from the game in frustration. You can easily lose in about 10 seconds if the computer keeps you backed up against the (invisible)walls surrounding the arena, because you'll be juggled so much you'll probably never even hit the ground.
Some characters are just completely worthless, namely the new character Drahmin, who has absolutely no combo moves whatsoever. The only way to defeat an opponent is by furious button mashing and pure luck.He relies far too heavily and special moves. The same goes for returning character Cyrax. While he has a few good combos, his moves are far too limited and he must rely mostly on his special moves. And many weapon styles are far too similar...some of them are totally identical to each other, except that the actual weapons look different.
Fatality fans will be very disappointed...each character has only one fatality. While a few of these fatalities are quite good, the greater majority of them are just awful.Quan Chi's fatality in particular is by far the worst Fatality that the Mortal Kombat series has ever seen. And there are no arena-based fatalities...how the creators can even dare to have an arena called the 'Acid Bath' or the 'Lava Shrine' and not have an arena based fatality is beyond comprehension. It seems that once again, the design team opted for total laziness in the Finishing Moves department, as they have ever since MK3.
Story, which has always been one of the best parts of MK, is no let down in this game. The addition of Konquest mode, which takes you through 10 missions to help explain character story and train you in the use of that particular character is a great addition. It helps you to earn 'Kurrency' which can be used to be secrets in the 'Krypt', a room full of 676 'Koffins' that are bought using your earned 'Kurrency'.The problem there is that out of 676 Koffins, about 620 of them are total 'Krap'.Character endings also leave alot to be desired...some just make no sense whatsoever, or are too short to explain anything.Others, however, are shocking and surprising.
Overall, the game just suffers from two major things: the feeling of being incomplete, and something that all MK fans should be used to by now: Empty Promises. Some characters are just too limited and feel like they were rushed. Some character's Konquest modes also seem to be completely rushed, being devoid of story and lacking rhyme or reason. As far as empty promises, many things that the development team promised when they were creating the game just did NOT make it in:Torn clothing on characters is nowhere to be found, weapon combat is far too basic(it was said to 'Rival Soul Calibur'), and a few other things that just seem annoying when you realize they aren't there.
If it seems that i'm coming down way too hard on this game...I apologize.I have been a fan of MK since it first debuted in Arcades in 1992.I just feel that Deadly Alliance could've been so much more than it actually is.To close this review off, I will list some of the high points of the game:
The story is outstanding.I challenge anyone to find a fighting game with a story as deep as this.Even Soul Calibur's story pales in comparison. The combat is fast paced and action packed...unlike Tekken or Virtua Fighter, which is slow paced and dreadfully boring.Characters look better and more detailed than ever.Arenas, although simplistic and basic in terms of interaction and maneuverability, are highly detailed and gorgeous. The addition of Kurrency, Konquest Mode and The Krypt fuel the replay value and will keep you coming back for weeks.Tons of characters both old and new offer lots of variety.
Overall, a great game that could've been perfect, had it not been for that feeling of being incomplete, or being victim of laziness.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Review

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As most people know Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was the last 2-d Mortal Kombat to come out of the 16bit era (Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo) But it does not disappoint. I have all four Mortal Kombat games available on Sega Genesis. I've had the first three for quite some time before managing to finally find UMK3, and I have been having fun with it since. All it really comes down too is that is MK3 but with extra characters, some new levels, combos, and even the everlasting glitches to appear every now and then. In my opinion UMK3 on the Genesis was my favorite port of the game, but the Sega version will have its downfalls especially being the arcade version is incredible. Some of the downfalls include: Some fatalities changed, animalities are taken out and replaced with brutalities, game will crash but not too often, some combos that can be done in the arcade version (12-20 hits, more then 100% damage) are hard and if not in way impossible to pull off in this port. Mostly from the fact your using a d-pad instead of the famous joystick, system slow done compared to the arcade version, and plain just controller in general. Im not saying they cant be done but i find it very hard to do sometimes. Now on to the computer, it is somewhat harder to beat compared to MK3 but still not all that hard. They added another tower on this with one with a harder difficulty level, but the experienced player can make it through pretty easy. Now about the sound quality of the game, the levels music are somewhat alright but kinda close to being unbearable. The announcer does not say any of the kombatants names which may not seem like a big deal to anyone, but personally i used to love how the pronouncer said some of their names. Scorpion doesnt do this famous get over line when doing his spear move, and you will just notice little sound glitches here or there but nothing to major. Overall i would say if your looking for a game that is tons of fun, and can open a lot of doors in the video game world, then this would be it.

Title: Mortal Kombat: Deception

Description: Another chapter of Mortal Kombat begins. The deadly alliance has won, but an unexpected event complicates their taking of Earthrealm (well the fact they turn on each other after their recent victory doesn't help.) The true leader of Outworld, the Dragon King returns to reclaim his army and dominion. An alliance forms once again between the evil sorcerers Shang Tseung and Quan Chi, but this time even Raiden joins the alliance in desperation to avoid the Dragon King's return. It seems only the help of a mysterious stranger can help them fight this new and powerful enemy.

Platform: PS2, Xbox (reviewed,) and GC (koming soon)

Learning Curve: 9- This game will keep you busy for hours on end. There is so much to explore that if you can do it in a few weeks... you have no life. It's ok though because having no life is fine because who needs healthy relationships when you can kick the virtual crap out of your peers online and further your social handicaps as you talk trash to other players. Yes!!! You can play online now and the performance is actually excellent and with this title white hot right now you got plenty of competition. It's already very competitive ( I mean kompetitive geez where's my head these days.) There are lots of fighters to choose from each with 3 different fighting styles for endless fighting potentials. I've been studying advanced "kombat" on the first 4 fighters already and haven't gotten a chance to go in depth with the others. There are hidden characters to uncover from the krypt. There are different levels to uncover and even the existing ones on initial play have awesome level features that can give you an easy victory. Look out for those ledges. There are also new features. A tetris like puzzle game. An Archon like chess game. An adventure game so that you can play something linear along with your standard classic style Mortal Kombat. You got your hands full for a while with this title. You up for the challenge? If you are come join us in loserville... errr Xbox Live and back up that claim. It'll be more challenging than Halo 2's point and shoot (I'm not dissing FPSes, but we all know it's true.)

Replay Value: 10- Fighting games are like sports games. They exist for high replay value. You can play this game over multiple times challenging friends and honing your skills. Have a Mortal Kombat party with your friends since your girlfriend more than likely left you after acquiring this title. Oh well, good riddance. Mortal Kombat will have you slashing, laughing, and frustrated for months. Until you've moved onto another title which will be a while if you take the time to appreciate this gem.

Difficulty: 8- Because there is so much to consider when rating "difficulty" on this game I'm just bundling it up as a whole. Some aspects of the game will be easier for different players and others will breeze through others. Some gamers will transitition well into this title with Deadly Alliance on your gaming resume. Some characters like Scorpion pretty much function the same. Some will find the puzzles and chess challenging and some will just consider them an annoying mini-game that would best be left out. If you like just straight up "kombat" there is arcade like fighting so you can just avoid that annoying adventure game and puzzle stuff. Open minded gamers will like the new additions I think.

Guide: There is a MK:D guide available from Bradygames for $14.99. It isn't worth your time though. The guide is incomplete and I dunno why publishers even bother to put things out that don't give you an edge. Try IGN or Gamefaqs unless you just want the poster or want to save yourself printer paper. The special edition MKs will set you back about $59.99 so you may want to trim where you can as the holidays are just around the corner. If you ask me pass on the guide and Bradygames shame on you this is unlike you.

Pros: Lots of characters, Fun new mini-games, Entertaining adventure mode, multiple fatalities per character and Hari Karis, ONLINE PLAY (not for Gamecube,) and return of classic favorites like Baraka

Cons: My number one compliant on this title. Choppy controls. Button mashes need to be timed and inputted exact and that is difficult with the joystick. I suggest actually using the D-pad on this game and I hate the thing and I haven't used it since the PS1. The controls are also not responding correctly especially with Mileena in mid-combo. If you try to do her roll towards an opponent mid combo it incorrectly places you D pad input as forward and not back on the D pad. It is irritating me and in close matches that move could cost you the battle. You guys need to send out a fix for that. You listening Midway?

Time Expected to Invest: I think gamers who embrace this game will have months of fun with this title if another title doesn't draw their attentions away. Casual gamers will likely play it long enough to get basic combat down and they will want to see the fatalities and than they will shelf this title afterwards. Shame on you casual gamers that is why you guys get that reputation. I give you guys about 3 weeks with MK.

Retail Value: $49.99 MSRP and $59.99 for the special edition versions (Special includes collectible tin card, special box art, bonus DVD with MK in the making footage and an arcade perfect version of the original MK)

Suggested Purchase Price: I think if you're a big fan go ahead and get the special edition as they are in limited supply. If you just want the game ehhh, just wait till they go down to about 30 or try and grab it used. This season has so many good releases you really want to give MK some time try and pick it up when you the flood gates aren't open, but this is definitely a good title to pick up if your in the market.

Overall: 9- The controls and somewhat redundant effects of this MK make it a 9 instead of a 10, but that is a great score. Online play really makes this title. This title offers a lot and I am more than pleased with my purchase of the special edition. Contrary to other reviews I like my "arcade perfect" version of MK 1 and I haven't experienced the problems of other reviewers. This title will likely make it into my best 10 of 2004 games list, but this season will create it some competition late in the year.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance Review

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I rented this game and a few days later bought it. This is nearly a perfect Mortal Kombat game. I had lost interest in MK after it's many sequels and same ol, same ol. A new fighting system, weaponry and multiple fighting styles make this not only a challenge to master but a lot of fun as well. Plenty of Gore and Blood and plenty of moves where you have no choice but to say "that HAD to hurt". You have to love impaling your opponent.
Graphics and sound are top notch and the added Konquest mode and the Krypt add a new level to this game the previous titles didn't have.Konquest mode to unlock Blaze and Mokap can be cruelly frustrating, just TRY and do Raiden's Chain Lightning Branch Style Combo, i've been at it for two days now. They couldn't have made Konquest mode just a "tad" easier. certain characters in Konquest mode are far easier than others.Sometimes i could swear there's a glitch where you do the combo right but the game insists you didn't, and as other times you do it by mashing buttons as fast as you can and it decides to let you have it. The old favorites are back with some great new characters as well. It's a interesting concept mixing a fighting game with Kurrency to unlock hidden characters, arenas and alternate costumes to name a few. I've been playing it non stop since i got it. The only problems i can find with this game are the "cheese" factor of Moloch and certain moves or combinations of moves that a human player wouldn't be able to pull off, but the AI pulls off flawlessly, like blocking and attacking at the same time as well as perfectly timed reversals into a 15 hit Branch Style Combo that goes through all three fighting styles LOL.The rounded directional pad makes some of the moves harder to pull off than on say a playstation controller and that can get annoying at times, hitting down back to perform a "special move" only to jump in the air unintentionaly. The range of difficulty should have been spread out a little more as well, you go from your first fighting being a flawless victory in every round,to your third and fourth giving you a seriously AI sided fight.Staring at the screen going what the heck happened, i guess i blinked. I would have liked to have seen more than ONE fatality per character and maybe even a few arena fatalities as well. Some of the Branch Style Kombos seem next to impossible to pull off and having to do them to beat Konquest mode to unlock even more characters is frustrating, although die hard MK fans wll surely have no problems LOL. It's a great game and i can't wait to see the sequel. Plenty of morbid entertainment for your dollars. From what i've herd and seen the Xbox version is the BEST version of this game on a console. If you have an Xbox definetly pick this up or rent it. One final thing, Midway would have been smart to make this game Xbox LIVE compatible so you could play with other people online in VS mode, that would have been most excellent.

Mortal Kombat Armageddon Review

Mortal Kombat Armageddon
Average Reviews:

I really wanted to like this game but so far the thrill is dying fast. It's mainly due to what many have stated before and that's the new fatality system. The uniqueness is gone. I personally think this game was built backwards. If space is going to be a problem then give the fans what you know they'll love (fatalities and plenty of 'em) and then if there's space left over add the fillers. I'll keep playing and see if this grows on me more but fact that I haven't shut myself in after playing it once is a sign it may not get any better.

I enjoyed Konquest mode in Deception but after 5 min of Konquest in Armageddon I'm already tired of it. Why oh why did they trade off the fatalities for this stuff. I know 60+ fatalities would have been a lot but I think the loyal MK fans will agree it would just have been another challenge to conquer. I pray on the next gen consoles they get it right.

Mortal Kombat Armageddon Review

Mortal Kombat Armageddon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mortal Kombat has fixed a lot of problems with their latest release, Mortal Kombat Armageddon. There are trillions of characters and some fun mini-games too.

The basic plot - as if this blood-drenched game really needed a plot - is that the Gods are sick of all the fighting going on. They send their two sons down to try to get things under control. In the meantime, there's a gigantic pyramid in which the various Kombatants can duke it out to see who reins supreme.

There are many ways to play in Mortal Kombat Armageddon. There is a story mode where you do have a plot - you walk along paths in jungles, explore spaceships, have random fights as you go, gathering up coins and treasures. In arcade mode, you have instant access to about 60 different characters in a series of fights. If you get stuck with one character, you can try again with a new one.

The characters are drawn from all of the Mortal Kombat games. Some only showed up briefly in previous games. If you've been following up on the Mortal Kombat saga, you'll see all sorts of references to previous situations and feuds.

All the coins you earn in the various stages can be used to unlock items - new skills, new outfits, and more. They actually tell you what you're going to unlock, too! That's a nice change. Also, there's only one type of coin - so everything you earn goes into one bank account for you to spend however you wish.

There is a REALLY cool character creating system where you can set up a character, male or female, with exactly the hair, eyes, body shape and costume you want. The tweaking is pretty impressive with eye color, nose shape and more. You expect this level of detail from a RPG - but from a fighting game it's a great bonus.

Speaking of bonusses, if you like games like Super Bombad Racing, you're in for a treat. They include an entire racing game as a bonus, with little cartooney versions of Mortal Kombat characters zipping around on a track.

Are there downsides to the game? Well, while the arenas you fight in are destructable, have the ability to go from one area to the other and have interactive items, they are not as "lushly gorgeous" as a few other XBox fighting games.

Also, while it's pretty tame now compared to other mature games, it's worth noting that Mortal Kombat is very bloody. When this series first came out, a lot of people were in an uproar over it. Now the blood spurting out seems almost normal. Still, not a game for little kids.

It also seems a bit silly that you have fully detailed cinematics - sometimes VERY long cinematics - setting up situations ... but when you end an important battle you often get a text message saying "And then [insert important boss name here] decided to stop fighting and run away". It's a bit anticlimactic.

Still, these are minor complaints in a game that is really quite stellar. They let you play tons of characters right from the beginning, so you can easily get to your favorites. They have a ton of things to unlock, and the coin system is very easy. You know WHAT you're going to unlock.

And, to be honest, I *love* that they have male and female characters, side by side, kicking butt. I've seen male and female players choosing both male and female characters without any problem, knowing that both can be equally strong and skilled. That really makes me happy, that we've reached this point.

Highly recommend for mature fighting game fans.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks Review

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is hands down the best "Mythologies" title in the MK Universe. After having two rather poor spin offs (Sub-Zero and MK: Special Forces), it seemed as if MK could only do well in it's core series... until now.

MK: Shaolin Monks is a re-telling of Mortal Kombat 2, through the eyes of Kung Lao and Liu Kang. The game starts at the end of MK 1 and runs all the way up to the climatic finish where you battle the great Shao Kahn. Along the way you will utilize the game's somewhat unique combat engine, which is basically a hybrid of a platformer like Devil May Cry and the MK "Kombat" engine. What is so great about it though is that it is not stiff like the "Kombat" engine, and allows pretty much free movement. You still have "kombos" and special moves, but they are all easy to execute and chain together, giving even a novice player an easy chance to get in the game and start kicking butt. You also have the ability to pull off fatalities on just about every enemy (even bosses, when you beat them!)

The game also features an "RPG" like experience point system, which you can manipulate heavily depending on how good you get at killing enemies and keeping your combos going without getting knocked down. As long as you keep hitting enemies and killing them, your combo will increase. With each kill or 10 hits, you receive a multiplier point. After your combo ends, the points you earned depending on a number of factors, including your combo and kills, are multiplied. You then receive experience points based on that multiplication. The experience points then can be used to purchase new moves and combos in the status screen. The only downside to this though is the fact that the game has only so many combos and moves to purchase. You will easily have purchased every move available well before the game is over (for me, it was half way before the game was complete!)

The graphics for MK: Shaolin Monks are kind of bad in places (especially in the cinematic cut scenes - everyone pretty much has the same face!) The in-game graphics are good though for the most part, although they seem gritty and un-finished in places. The dynamic lighting and the blood makes up for it though... if you like your violence red.

Sound-wise, MK: Shaolin Monks is like any other MK game. The soundtrack is not at all that impressive, but it fits the atmosphere of the game, especially in the areas that are straight out of MK 2. The only qualms with the game's sound are probably with it's voice acting... but we'll get into that further in a bit.

The story telling of MK:Shaolin Monks is another hamper on the game. While the game features some great MK action and appearances from just about everyone's favorite characters, the way they appear (or die) is somewhat non-sensual at times. Also, with the way certain things happen in the game, you will be left with your head scratching, wondering if you recall things being that way in MKII's story. To top it off, the game has some really BAD voice acting (best example is Shao Kahn... instead of using the MK announcer voice, they used some other random voice.)

Despite the shoddy voice acting and rather butchered storyline, MK:Shaolin Monks is still the best MK spin-off game to date. It features a combat engine that is arguably better than the regular MK fighting engine, and it gives the gamer more things to do (tons of stage kills and environmental manipulations.) You also have a couple secret characters to unlock, as well as plenty of extra "kontent" to find along the way (including a hidden port of the arcade version of Mortal Kombat II!) MK: Shoalin Monks is highly recommended for any MK fan or just about any action/platformer fan.

I was 22 years old when I noticed a crowd gathered around a new game called Mortal Kombat, and by the time Mortal Kombat 2 was released, I was spending around 20 dollars a week on it. I have played every single MK game since (including Sub Zero Mythologies) and Shaolin Monks is a cool addition to the series overall. The graphics are nice (at times beautiful) and the gameplay is retro fighting (Double Dragon anyone?) brought onto a modern console. You have many classic moves available and some new ones as well. The opening animation is bar none the coolest and most brutal fight scene EVER in a video game! The 2 player co-op is fun as well as the Vs mode which gives you LARGE arenas to fight in. I am not a big fan of Deception or Deadly Alliance as they really are just button mashing games. You can memorize combos, or just hit random buttons and your chances of a victorious outcome are almost the same. MK 2 is by far the best designed Mortal Kombat game, but it's nice to see the franchise try new things. I like Shaolin Monks and hope to see some more MK adventure games soon!

If you're a fan of the Mortal Kombat series, or fighting games in general, get ready. This mature title has got puzzles, RPG, chess, and yes, lots of bloody Kombat!

The traditional aspects of Mortal Kombat are here. You have different characters to choose from. Different styles of fighting. Key combinations create gorgeous attack moves. You earn coins as you go, to spend on unlocking new characters, levels, and other secrets.

The graphics here are simply gorgeous. The floors and walls have textures from shiny and reflective to grainy matte. The glow of fire, misty mountains and glowing lights are quite impressive. Characters have robes that flow with the action and accessories that sway realistically. If you want to be gory, the blood even flows down your body.

On the other hand, in Dead or Alive the environments are amazingly reactive - fighting in a snowy area leaves tracks in the snow, and autumn leaves blow past you in the forest. In comparison, Mortal Kombat has a desert island fight seem like the ground is made of concrete. So there is still room for improvement.

Body movements are equally as well done. Gone are the days of blocky characters with jerky attacks. You can really feel like you're in a martial arts movie here, with the super smooth blocks and combo kicks. This is great for the audience the game is intended for (mature) - but means that youngsters can easily get upset by some of the very realistic back-breaking moves. There's a reason this game earned that mature rating.

Even the sub-games are so good that they could easily qualify as standalone packages. The Puzzle Kombat is in essence tetris with fighting animations for when you do well. Chess Kombat is chess with little mortal kombat pieces. You can play both of these on XBox Live too! There's also a Konquest Adventure where you wander around talking to characters and taking on quests.

Highly recommended for mature fighting game fans, and with all of the things to unlock you have great incentive to play for weeks and weeks to see everything.

and this is coming from someone who plays almost ONLY rpgs.

the first day i played the game, i only played konquest mode and the puzzle game.it's so good, even the part of the game that isn't really THE GAME is great.

konquest mode in this game is WAY different than it was in deadly alliance.it's practically a VERY large game in itself...it even has storyline!i still haven't completed it.. i think i have over 5 hours on it.

the puzzle game is wicked fun.in fact, it may even be more addicting than tetris.

the chess game is a bit difficult to keep up with...it's not like regular chess.you actually have to fight a mortal kombat battle in order to take a piece.kind of confusing, but worth looking at anyway.

as for the actual game, it's great as well.the interactive backgrounds are my favorite thing about it.there's nothing more fun than knocking people into grinding blades, or knocking them off a REALLY high place...so they can fall on a sharp rock.

the kript is as annoying as usual, but it really makes you want to get koins, so you can get all the characters, and all that jazz.

as for everything else, graphics are great, pretty much the same as deadly alliance.gameplay is the same too, except in conquest mode.also, there's no jabbing a weapon into someone...which i think was just fine to take out.sounds and music is improved.

i have a feeling this game will keep me occupied longer than most rpgs i play.that disturbes me and makes me very happy at the same time.i suggest gettin on the ball and pickin this up.

This review will detail the features of the Wii version. If you wish to know more about the game as a whole, there are plenty of other places to look.

Wii Exclusives:

Wiimote Motion Control
Wiimote Training Video
Wiimote Training Mode
Khameleon Character (From N64 MK Trilogy)
Endurance Mode
Fastest Load Times (3 Seconds compared to PS2's 9 Seconds)
Sharpest Graphics

There is a demonstration video showing you how to use the new motion controls...you can also test them out in the practice mode.

I had absolutely no problem adapting to the controls, and I much prefer them to the standard button input and can't imagine going back. It's not always accurate...I'd say it's about as accurate as the button inputs would be. The motion controls are just for special moves and the kreate-a-fatalities in Arcade mode.

Tilt steering is supported in Motor Kombat of course and Menu navigation is a breeze with the Wii remote as a laser pointer style mouse.

IF YOU ARE TURNED OFF BY THE WII CONTROLS, both the GAMECUBE and CLASSIC CONTROLLERS are supported as an alternative! You can even play with a combination of control types.

The only thing missing is the online play, and I'll leave it up to you weather that is a big deal of not...It really depends on if you play games online. I don't, so I don't mind.

Super Street Fighter II Review

Super Street Fighter II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, released for the SNES in 1994, is the sequel to SF II Turbo: Hyper Fighting. After the success of the previous SF2 games, Capcom wasn't about to release Street Fighter III yet. Instead it tweaked the cast of the previous games a bit, gave them a variety of new coloured outfits and introduced four new fighters: Cammy (a British intelligence officer), T. Hawk (a massive red Indian), Fei Long (a Bruce Lee look and act-alike, probably the answer to Mortal Kombat's Liu Kang...) and Dee Jay (a crazy jamaican full-contact fighter). Considering all this, the game has to be even better than SF2 Turbo, right? That's not quite the case though...
I understand that the arcade game changed the way it sounds from its predecessors by using new "Q sound" technology. Probably due to this, the sound effects and music quality in the SNES conversion is quite poor. I never realised that audio actually plays an important part in fighting games till I played this...especially since I played SF2 Turbo before. The energetic, deep voice of the announcer of Turbo is gone. It is replaced by a boring and clumsy-sounding voice. It is great that the characters sound different from each other this time around, but some character voices are pretty lame, especially the K.O. sounds made by M.Bison (Vega in Japan) and Guile. And don't even get me started on the "Sonic Boom" voice of Guile or the "Tiger Uppercut" voice of Sagat or the "Hadoken" voice of Ken. Very lame, indeed. The background music is okay, but lacks the quality of Turbo by a wide margin.
Then to the graphics. Again, must be the fact that the "Ryu Intro" took up too much memory. The visuals are dull and are almost Sega Genesis quality. However the new backgrounds are pretty decent to look at. Moving onto the gameplay. The ability to play in turbo speed is gone. It's back to three-star speed again. Playing it in anything less than that is a horrible experience. The original cast have their moves either improved or weakened or new moves gained. For example, Ken has gained a flaming dragon punch, whereas Ryu's hurricane kick is severely weakened. Guile has lost the ability to connect twice with his flash kick, as has Sagat with his close-up fierce kick. Among the new characters, Fei Long and Cammy are interesting, Dee Jay is awkward but powerful and T. Hawk is a clumsy, Zangief-ish wrestler with some style. To freshen things up there are various modes in the game, including super battle, versus battle, group battle, tournament and time challenge, plus new endings for some of the original cast.
Overall it seems Super SF2 is quite a solid game which will satisfy Street Fighter fans without a doubt, and is more enjoyable than many of the other SNES fighting games, but lacks the long-lasting appeal of its predecessors due to the average visual and audio quality.

Mortal Kombat Unchained Review

Mortal Kombat Unchained

First, Dragonball Z Shin Budokai. Then, Tekken: Dark Resurrection. Now, Mortal Kombat:Unchained. With each new fighter released, I'm more and more convinced that the Playstation Portable can give a deep console presentation but on a portable and mobile device. Take Mortal Kombat: Unchained, for instance, -basically a port of Mortal Kombat Deception for the PSP that includes every last thing in the console game. Two fatalities per character with new death traps, stage fatalities-Completely redesigned single player Konquest mode-Features multi-tiered interactive backgrounds-With a mix of your favorite fighters as well as many new ones. It's the definitive portable Mortal Kombat experience every fan has waited for. I must say, I'm impressed. The loading times for the game are a smidgen long but doesn't mar things overall. Other than that, Mortal Kombat: Unchained is 'off the chain'. Seriously, you'll love it.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Review

It seems the more you read people talking about this game they either love it or hate it.I fall in the middle.I am just a casual gamer I play every now and then at night or on weekends, but I don't spend every waking moment with a controller in my hands. So take that into consideration as I make this review.

Overall I think this a fun game.I have been playing Mortal Kombat games for a long time now and I find this one just as enjoyable.I think the mix of character is nice with some of your most popular MK characters with some of the most recognizable DC comics heroes and villains.

The gameplay has been tweaked a bit since the previous MK game, but it is nothing that you can't adjust to, and overall I think it offers more character control. The special moves or super moves as called in the game are a fun mix too with most of your favorite moves form you MK characters kept in with a mix of a few new ones to keep things interesting.

We do have a return of the preprogrammed fatalities, but they have been toned down.No more dismemberment, decapitation, or removal of vital organs. This may be a big deal for you, but I don't require a high level of gore to enjoy a video game.

As far as I can tell there are no hidden characters in the game, other then the unlockable boss characters. So don't expect to find Reptile or the Martian Manhunter. But like most Xbox 360 games the game will support downloadable content in the future. But when new fighters show up is up to the video game publisher.

If you are trying to chose between the kollectors edition and the basica game save your money. The comic book that comes with the game is a quite small and almost just like a pamphlet and does not really add anything to the story. There is a small poster and a making of dvd.but you will probably be able to see all those videos on youtube before too long.

So a hardcore mortal kombat fan or gamer may not enjoy this game too much as it comes up short on gore and hidden characters. But the game still presents and interesting storyline and a chance to play as some of your favorite DC comics characters.I have it I enjoy playing it and hope to have fun with friends playing as superheros and undead ninjas.

The story of how the heroes and villains of Mortal Kombat and theDC universe could find themselves not only existing on the same plain, butbattling each other revolves around coincidental victories in the respectiverealms by Raiden and Superman. In Raiden's case it was a victory over ShaoKahn, while Superman bested Darkseid. These occurred at the exact same timeand involved inter-dimensional elements, which somehow merged their twoenemies into one being, Dark Kahn, while allowing the characters of thetwo universes to interact. In this merging the powers of the heroes andvillains are scrambled as well, making some stronger than they ever were, and leaving others vulnerable for the first time in their lives, allowingeach to battle on more or less equal footing. And battle they do withoutrealizing that the uncontrollable rage that they feel for each other isactually the work of Dark Khan.

Gameplay
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe being a fighter, gameplay consistsof one-on-one battles, both in local play and online, in which playerscan choose a character from either side who will face off against a counterpartfrom the other. Each character has unique attacks and special finishingmoves, and fighting arenas vary depending on whether your character comesfrom the Mortal Kombat or DC universe. Keeping with the reputationfor brutality in the Mortal Kombat franchise, characters from thisside will have access to fatalities, while the historically less overlyviolent DC Comics characters will execute "heroic brutalities," whichare end moves where the opponent while beaten, is not killed. The gamealso features new gameplay mechanics such as: Freefall Kombat, in whichplayers can engage in extended combat while in midair; Klose Kombat, duringwhich the play angle moves to a close-up view of the action; The "TestYour Might" mini-game where you smash your opponent through walls; andRage Mode, which increases the power of a character's attack by 50% andprovides protection against being stunned by an opponent.

Playable Characters
Playable characters in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe consist of some of the most popular heroes and villains from both universes, with most being available from the beginning of the game and some unlockable throughout. They include the following:
